Andy Abraham finished last in the Eurovision Song Contest this year, the second time in the contest's history that the UK has done so dismally - the last time this occured was when Jemini infamously scored 'nul point' at Eurovision in 2003. The perenial post-contest question is can the UK ever win Eurovision again? The answer is, yes they can.Whinging about block voting, not helped by Terry Wogan fuelling the fire on the subject, is slightly moot now - The contests new semi-final format eliminated a lot of the dubious entries from Eastern European countries that would have normally proceeded through to the final carried by their neighbours.Yes Russia won and the Ukraine came second and Armenia finished in the top 5, but deservedly so. Western countries cannot be bitter about this because, hands down, these countries songs and performances were far superior.Apparently Russia invested $16 million in their entry this year. Dima Bilan is the biggest Russian male singer at the moment ...

After last participating in 2006 Eurovision Song Contest and finishing second behind Finland's Lordi, Dima Bilan returned to the contest in 2008 and has garnered Russia 's first Eurovision win singing 'Believe' (I wonder if the pube-skimming low-cut jeans and trimmed treasure trail helped - Dima you are such a tease). I was priveleged enough to meet Quentin Crisp at a Waterstones book-signing for 'Resident Alien: An Englishman in New York' a few weeks before he died. It was a Sunday afternoon and I made the short bus-ride to Hampstead Heath at the designated time not knowing quite what to expect - Having only ever seen John Hurt 's portrayal of Quentin Crisp in the Naked Civil Servant and knowing that he was a historical figure revered in the gay community.A polite British queue greeted me as I approached Waterstones - queens and queers of various shapes and sizes all preciously clutching a copy of Quentin's Resident Alien. Now here is a welcome blast from the past. Darius Danesh is to star as Rhett Butler in the new stage production of Gone With The Wind . So all 43 of this year's Eurovision Song Contest entrants have been selected and it looks to be a poor year for song quality with the exception of a few outstanding gems.My money is on Iceland winning 2008 .html">Eurovision 2008 with the upbeat club track 'This is my life' performed by Euroband. The song stands head and shoulders above all the other entrants especially as Sweden failed to select Bodies Without Organs (BWO) to represent them, which would have been Iceland's nearest rival. It is by far the strongest song this year and judging by the video, the performance from Friðrik Ómar and Regina Ósk is slick and polished. It would be the first win for Iceland so fingers-crossed.Another song that stands out is the entry from Ukraine, Ani Lorak singing Shady Lady (Ukraine seems to garner the political vote these days).Also, Israel's Boaz Mauda singing 'The Fire In Your Eyes' will do well.A welcome return to the contest for Dima Bilan who represented Russia in 2006 and came 3rd. For once I'm happy with the UK voting publics credibility in choosing a worthy UK representative for the Eurovision Song Contest - Andy Abraham singing 'Even If'. So what can CIMW look forward to in the upcoming year?The third season of Dancing On Ice kicks-off in January and will continue through February and March - interestingly, it's been revealed that the winner of Dancing On Ice 2007, Kyran Bracken, has given up rugby and is concentrating on becoming a professional ice-dancer...well I never! On Saturday 24 May, Serbia will host this year's Eurovision Song Contest - 43 countries are participating this year that include new entrants, Azerbaijan and San Marino (hopefully this will encourage the welcome return of Italy in 2009). Eurovision takes a new format this year with the winning country (Serbia) and the 'big four' (UK; France; Germany and Spain) being the only countries that automatically qualify for the final - all the other participating countries have to compete across two semi-finals. Also in May, season 9 of Big Brother UK commences, which undoubtedly will have its share of CIMW postings - not to mention the other Big Brother...
