I finally finished preparing what it is my first podcast episode. It is about the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 events. I think I took a somewhat different approach. Even when it is made in Spanish, you guys might be interested in taking a look at some resources here.

GUESS WHO´S BACK?
2007-08-03 07:34:00
Hey my friends! Thought I had kicked the bucket?? Hehehehe? Truth be told, my under-maintenance post was a way of softening the fact that my lap top had broken down; a way of keeping my faith in the possibility of posting again at some time in the near future. However, it did not take too much time to realize I was in the face of a slightly more complex situation: it turned out to be that my computer didn´t serve me just as a type writer machine (word processor, in the most broadly sense) but also as an alarm clock, phone device, T. V. set, movie theater, newspaper, stereo, library, friend´s club? you name it. ?What a great invention!? I thought to myself ?not too much of a great life though. Basically because without my computer I started feeling a little bit awkward, and I became aware of how dependant I had become not just on it but basically, on technology, and that did not really seem to be ?natural? to me. So I decided to start living a techno-free life, whenever th...

IMMIGRATION: THE OTHER DEBATE
2007-06-23 22:42:00
During the last weeks I have closely followed the immigration debate that has taken place in the U. S., prompted by the discussion in the Senate on the so called immigration bill. It has been interesting to observe the significant amount of attention and time that has been devoted to this issue by the media, making it one of the top news stories at large. It is a fact that such attention corresponds with the American public real interest who consider this topic a priority. What I deplore is the conservative discourse dominance of the debate which not only has boosted the creepy nationalism of some but it has also served as a veil for Washington´s pragmatic reasons: the capitalization of 42 (plus 12-20) million Hispanics economic weight ($900 billion in annual spending), of their labor capacity (cheap labor force) and political weight (the increase of the republican electoral base). Any serious debate on immigration would consider its root source: the economical situation o...

SiCKO!!
2007-06-16 12:16:00
One day before its announced ?U.S. special premiere? in Bellaire, Michigan and two weeks prior to its nationwide debut, Micheal Moore´s latest film on the American health care system ?SiCKO? found its way to the Internet and now it is available for everyone to watch it HERE (Roll down to find it) I am not good at movie commenting and all. What I can say is that this is definitely the best Micheal Moore´s documentary. Especially moving turns out to be the Cuban chapter where some 9/11 aid workers move on to the island to receive medical treatment they have been denied in their homeland.

THE RETURN OF HABEAS CORPUS?
2007-06-07 23:58:00
The U. S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary has just passed a bill today in an attempt to restore habeas corpus, one of the basic constitutional civil rights taken away by the Military Commissions Act approved by the U. S. Congress last September and signed into law by President Bush 19 days later. My first post to this blog was devoted to this issue here. Later on I compiled some pieces of information on the same topic here, here, here and here. I specially recall Keith Olbermann´s editorial comment on what he sarcastically defined back then as what it used to be ?the right of anyone who is tossed in prison, to appear in court and say, Hey, why am I in prison??, definitely worth watching again HERE. While some have seen today´s Senate Committee action as the first step towards restoring the so called Great Writ, considered to be the foundation of all other rights in the U. S., others have remained doubtful thinking that once passed by the Senate (if so) this law will li...

JOBS: STAY HUNGRY, STAY FOOLISH!
2007-06-03 22:31:00
Thanks Duilio Believe it or not, I did not know who Steve Jobs was before watching the video below. Now I know that this character turns out to be somewhat controversial, personal trait intelligent men have always shared. But it was precisely that, not knowing who this man was, which allowed me not just to stick to the substance of his great 2005 Stanford Commencement Speech but also to enjoy it big time. The best part is at the end.

RETHINKING THE BASICS
2007-05-30 23:01:00
An unusual high traffic flow to one of my blog´s entries (Miss Universe 2007) in the last days made me think once again about the imperative necessity of rethinking some of our basic concepts. I see no problem with people´s big interest in women´s beauty: I find it rather natural! The point is that the concept of beauty usually vindicated turns out to be at least, let´s say, deceptive. That is pretty much the case of many other common concepts such as happiness, love or sex, etc which normally tend to have both trivial and misleading acceptions. The problem is not so much that by passively adopting those mainstream acceptions we literally miss the opportunity to experience these concepts real possibilities. The main issue is that these concepts as vindicated generally make us live a miserable life chock-full of doubts and problems easily avoidable otherwise. The system does what it is expected to do according to its own inner logic. What it is not reasonable is to ...

THE STATE OF MEXICO´S DEMOCRACY
2007-05-12 05:38:00
Some days ago, a one-day Symposium on current Mexico ´s political situation was held at Yale University. This event gathered some distinguished Mexican academics, intellectuals and political actors who reflected from different political and ideological views on the state of the nation after the so conceived traumatizing 2006 Mexican presidential election and its aftermath. The conference turned out to be very interesting not just because of the topic itself but basically because, for the first time, there was a consensus on one thing, namely: that "something" was seriously wrong. During the day, all panelists (even the most furious election result´s advocates contributed a great deal to it) listed up the series of well known ?anomalies? that lead to have, said some, a reasonable doubt about the electoral results: from the President´s intervention in the electoral process (AMLO´s impeachment, public statements of discredit, tv spots), the electoral councilors fiddled selection ...

TUNICK IN MEXICO
2007-05-07 03:30:00
One of the most beautiful photographs of all times was taken today when American photographer Spencer Tunic k pressed the shutter button of his camera for the first of various photo shoots before a multitude of 20,000 naked human bodies flocked to Mexico City´s Zocalo square, in the early hours of this morning. According to one of the participant´s testimony, a very lively one read here, this event literally constituted a joyful liberation exercise which made them all experience a precious but not very frequent sensation nowadays, a very fundamental one: the sensation of simply being? human. As far as the city is concerned, this event represents another step forward towards its own liberation: after the same-sex marriage and abortion legislations recently passed, this episode has given Mexico City´s inhabitants not just a great moment of creative and artistic expression but mainly another civic liberty momentum.

THE RIGHT TO DECIDE
2007-04-26 03:34:00
Yesterday, after some difficulties, Mexico City lawmakers finally voted to legalize abortion. Before this, abortion was permitted only in special cases, including after rape, if the fetus had defects or if the mother´s life was at risk. Now, this law will allow women to have an abortion up to 12 weeks into their pregnancy if having the child ?would negatively affect their life project?. This is not just another positive step forward for health issues handling (in a country where it is said that up to a million illegal abortions take the lives of thousands of poor women every year), it is basically another victory for one of the basic and fundamental women´s rights, namely: their right to decide. In moral terms, I have always respected everybody´s opinions, including those who oppose abortion. Though I have to say that, in the concrete fight for life (and the vindication of its main principals: Justice, Truth, Knowledge, etc) I have never seen them in the front line?

MISS UNIVERSE 2007
2007-04-17 18:48:00
I have just learned that the latest edition of the Miss Universe pageant will be held in Mexico City next month. This piece of news would not be significant if we did not consider one thing: that this kind of events greatly contributes to expand a really unfortunate concept of beauty in general and especially of women´s beauty, that where image prevails over real substance, so to speak. We all know that those who buy that concept strive to fulfill it and normally tend to lead a very doubtful mind. I am not one of those who think that beauty is just inner beauty. I think outer beauty does exist but it begins with an inner connection. I know not everybody believes that. I recently conducted an experiment (Hehehehe!) while being on vacation where I posted photos of two of my best friends on one of those friend´s connection internet sites. One of them is a very good looking guy, according to the media common stereotype; the other one is quite the opposite. The first one received 93 in...

THE QUALITY OF COHERING
2007-03-31 07:15:00
Some days ago, my good friend Darko made a reference to my post on Gabo suggesting that it would be good to see the great Colombian writer having a more active role in politics, especially in his country where the difficult political situation is a cause of great concern for everybody in the region. In general I agree, but I still think, at the same time, that Gabo is one of those that have contributed to save one of the most important parts of our being, namely: our imagination, giving us all moments of delightful peace in the middle of this chaotic and not a small number of times unbearable world and, I think that that is not a little thing. Though I have to say that my brother´s comment really made me think? Everybody knows that Socrates, founder of Western Philosophy, is a paradigmatic example of coherence: life and work were always a single expression of his intentions; even in the face of his own death he was exceptional like anyone. During history of times we have had di...

GABO, THE BEST
2007-03-27 22:23:00
Yesterday, during his speech, in the 4th Congress of the Spanish language opening session, Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez gave an interesting account of the great vicissitudes he faced while he was in the process of writing his master piece ?One Hundred Years of Solitude?. I say ?interesting? basically because it does reveal, beyond his eminent mastery of language, an extraordinary example of keeping persistency while pursuing his beliefs. Something that I would call, rephrasing a famous quote: the audacity of belief. Everybody knows that after being awarded the Nobel Prize in 1982, Gabo has kept writing more than ever. I have got the opportunity to meet him personally many times over the years. I have to say that they have always been difficult ?encounters? where it seems to be that I have always ended up saying something awkward. I wonder why? (Hehehehe!). The First time that I met him, I was working as a bookseller at a renowned bookshop at the age of 17. That w...

SLEEPING PRECIOUS
2007-03-23 07:15:00
Yesterday night, after work, I felt a great necessity to be alone with myself. So I decided to go to a bar or something. It is curios to think that I have always felt especially lonely when I am surrounded by strangers. It is just as if they made me corroborate beyond any doubt the fact that, in the end, we all are by ourselves. I drove downtown where it is known most of the clubs are located in the city. I stopped at a place whose entrance was full of people standing in line. There was no marquee sign outside the place but a fluorescent lamp. As I got off my car and started getting closer I could observe that the crowd was mainly composed by men. For no particular reason, when the door man saw me, greeted me courteously and had me in without queuing. As I got into the place the lights went off and a familiar rhythm started to sound: Paul Oakenfold, souther sun (I-still-feel-you-beneath-my-skin-I-am-te mpted-to-throw-my-senses-in?) then a reflex was directed towards the middle ...
