P Ramlee?s Seniman Bujang Lapok (offensive version)
2008-03-27 01:51:00
Warning: Proceed at your own risk. Some words / phrases used are not suitable in polite company. If you find toilet humour funny, then this is for you. I have no idea who dubbed this, but obviously (a) Sabahan(s). Originally received via bluetooth forwards. P Ramlee would’ve been aghast!

What is your favourite song by the King of Pop?
2008-03-23 02:00:00
My favourite Michael Jackson song is Dirty Diana (off his 1987 album Bad). Being a live music enthusiast, I like it more when it’s performed live, with Steve Stevens and Jennifer Batten onstage! What is your favourite MJ song?

Excellent music discovered accidentally (part 2)
2008-03-21 02:00:00
I wrote about the above topic back in June last year, and I would like to make an addition. I should blame the Edison Chen-Gillian Chung-Cecilia Cheung-Bobo Chan scandal for this. On youtube, one thing led to another and came across S.H.E, a Taiwanese 3-girl group’s music video “Wo Ai Ni” (I Love You). It was ...

What to do if you?ve forgotten the lyrics while singing live
2008-03-19 01:55:00
Answer: make up the lyrics, on the spot. In the following video taken more than 20 years ago, this guy showed how it’s done. At that time, a popular Kadazandusun song was Billy Gatong’s “Rozelin pili’on ku.” This guy apparently is very familar with the melody, yet apparently have forgotten the lyrics, so he did the next ...

Probably one of Sabah?s best ever unknown songs
2008-03-17 02:00:00
I think I’m a rock star in a previous life, or rather, if I could live my life again, I’d be one. One of my circle of friends are made up of music enthusiasts - not merely listening to music, but making it. I used to teach them some tricks, but now they astound me ...

The battle of the credit cards
2008-03-15 17:44:00
Up to at least 10 years ago it was very difficult to get approved to get credit cards. You practically had to beg the banks to let you have even their lowest-level cards. Nowadays it’s the total opposite - banks would send their marketing people to invade offices - at my department they’ve done so ...

Of bloggers turned politicians (and vice versa) [Part 2]
2008-03-12 02:00:00
2 days before the elections I blogged about them. Little did I expect that most of them would win their seats, and even those who lost did very well. DAP’s Jeff Ooi, 52 became the Jelutong MP after defeating BN’s Thor Teong Gee by more than 16,000 votes. PKR’s Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, 26 became the youngest Yang ...

Reminiscing 8th March: voting at GE2008
2008-03-11 02:00:00
I have never missed voting for either the state or paliamentary elections ever since my first time in 1994. [update: actually I missed the 1995 parliamentary because I was working outside the state at that time] On the afternoon of 8th March , it was raining heavily as I made my way to Tamparuli. At the Luyang-Bukit ...

General Elections 2008: pictures of a polling centre the day before voting:
2008-03-08 02:00:00
A polling centre is located near my place of work, and when I came in the morning the place was abuzz with activities. But by lunchtime, there’s an eerie silence: all 5 streams ready, with nobody in sight. Since elections usually come up only once every few years, and the following set-up would only last 2 ...

The two immortal theme songs for Malaysian elections
2008-03-07 02:00:00
The late Dato’ Zainal Alam composed two immortal theme songs for Jabatan Penerangan for the elections: “Mari Mengundi” and “Undilah Kita Semua” back in the 1950s (some say 1959, some say 1955). Up until now, 50 years later, they are still popular, especially on RTM radio stations. Some changes have been made to the lyrics, but ...

Of bloggers turned politicians (and vice versa)
2008-03-06 15:35:00
By politician I mean at least standing as a candidate in national or state level elections. The most famous blogger-turned-politician in Malaysia is undoubtedly Jeff Ooi, the DAP candidate for Jelutong parliamentary seat. Impressively, he proved that it’s possible to raise funds online, surpassing his RM100K target. I thought that he is the only one, then I ...

Election joke: know your DUNs (State Legislative Assemblies)

Received via email forwards. I am not sure who is the author, but this has been around since at least April 2005. Note: - DUN = Dewan Undangan Negeri = state legislative assembly - it’s in Malay, so you’d need to understand the language to get the joke DUN yg paling sejuk, DUN Batu Berendam DUN yg paling tak de ...

Flashback: 1985 Sabah State Elections
2008-03-01 02:00:00
The 1985 Sabah State Elections shall forever be remembered as the year mighty Berjaya fell from power. Amazing, because 4 years earlier they won with a huge majority: more than 40 seats, out of the 48 available. It was also the elections when probably the greatest upset in the history of Malaysian politics happened. The president ...

Flashback: 1999 Sabah State Elections in pictures
2008-02-26 01:41:00
One of the most interesting Sabah State Elections happened in 1999. PBS was still in the opposition then: they left the BN in 1990 and rejoined on 23rd January 2002. The State Assembly was dissolved on 22nd February 1999 after much speculation. Nomination day: 2nd March. Election days: 11th - 12th March. Here are some pictures that ...

Exclusive photos of the Kota Belud anti-tank mortar bomb explosion, 1st Feb
2008-02-20 01:38:00
The Army has a camp, called Camp Paradise in Kota Belud. With the latest incident on 1st February, there have been 4 people killed by mortar bomb blasts in the area. In March 2006, Saingkin Baril found a foot-long, oval-shaped metal object while looking for scrap metal there. Not realising that it’s a still-active anti-tank mortar, ...

Video: street fighting at Kiulu Town

This is affray in the truest sense of the word - this was not staged. According to a little bird: One suffered a torn lip, the other a broken nose. View of Kota Kinabalu city from possibly the tallest building downtown
2008-02-16 01:47:00
On 15th February, I attended a function on the top (13th) floor of Wisma Bandaraya, which is located in downtown Kota Kinabalu . The building previously housed the Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri which has since moved to its own building in Karamunsing. It is probably the tallest building at the city centre, and I was pleasantly surprised to ...

Got transferred, moving office, heavier responsibility

After having been at my existing office for slightly less than 2 years, the boss decided that it’s time for staff reshuffle again. My transfer was effective 1st February, so I have been in the new office for about 2 weeks. Not that I’m not used to it: it must be my 5th transfer since I started, ...

Why Estranged?s ?Itu Kamu? winning Anugerah Juara Lagu is a momentous event
2008-02-12 01:19:00
I drafted this on 28th January, but somehow it escaped being published. Still, it’s better late than never… Anugerah Juara Lagu is probably the most prestigious and most watched event in Malaysia’s entertainment scene - highest number of eyeballs. Winners are surely superstars, at least in the country. It’s probably a surer ticket to superstardom than winning ...

Going on holiday to Canada?
2008-02-10 16:23:00
Canada has always been a bit of a mystery nation, at least to me, not least because of its close proximity of its more illustrious neighbour, the United States of America. Most, if not all of us have learnt at least a little bit about it during our Geography lessons at secondary school. Perhaps I speak don’t speak for all of us, but I think we “forced” ourselves to learn about Canada then just to get that A grade. Yes, I got an A in Geography, and promptly forgot everything about Canada after taking the paper. I read a little bit about Canadian history just now, and still I can’t get the big picture. About tourism in Canada, I can’t remember seeing any marketing moves on it in this country. Most of its visitors come from its neighbour, the USA, so probably that explains it - it makes better sense to concentrate their efforts on the world’s biggest economy. Digging a little bit, apparently tourism’s importance to Canadian economy is increasin...
