2008-02-10 01:56:00
Here are some pictures I took of the first day of CNY: We traditionally spend the first day of CNY at my mother-in-law’s sister’s house. This year they had 10 lions: As usual the lions’ biggest fans are the kids: On the way to the house, one of the lion’s steps got caught in a tree branch, hence ...

The first woman to scale Mount Kinabalu
2008-02-08 01:22:00
Lilian Suzette Gibbs (10th September 1870 - 30th January 1925), an English botanist was the one. She’s definitely one of the most adventurous women of her time. She organised botanical expeditions to far-flung places. These days it might be easy, but during the early days of the 20th century, they are no mean feats. Graduating from the ...

How many Ferraris with Sabahan plate numbers are there? (Part 2)
2008-02-06 01:26:00
Update on my sighting of a Ferrari F430 with Sabahan number plate (S81) on 25th January. I saw it again in Lido on the morning of 2nd February. Driver looks to be thirtysomething, average-looking Chinese male with glasses. A little bird informed that: The Ferrari above belongs to the son of one Datuk Pang of Sandakan. Datuk Pang ...

The funniest Sabahan-style broken-hearted song ever
2008-02-04 01:40:00
The following has been making the rounds via email forwards. There are several levels of funniness - this one is at the highest level - I was laughing until I cried. However, you’d need to be very familiar with how Sabahans in general speak Bahasa Malaysia. This might never win Anugerah Juara Lagu, let alone a Grammy ...

How many Ferraris with Sabahan plate numbers are there?
2008-01-30 01:45:00
When it comes to motor vehicles, this is a sure head turner. The ultimate status symbol. Especially so in this part of the world. For other luxury vehicles I’ve seen around KK, a Mercedes S-class cost about RM700K. A Range Rover about RM800K. A BMW 7-series about RM700K. A Porsche about RM900K. I have also seen ...

How great you are is measured by how you handle defeats and failures
2008-01-28 01:30:00
True character building happens when one goes through the low points in life. As Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir is fond of saying: leaders need to be tested by their ability to pick themselves up, dust off defeat and keep moving forward. Check out what Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, the world’s number 1 and ...

Whatever your personal opinions are about Valentin e ’s Day, it’s around the corner again, and like it or not, some of us have no option but to cough out the dough to get at least something for loved ones. So we, those expected to give out something, have to be smart. In this case, Cupid or his ...

Or another scenario is: you’re speaking onstage in front of many VVIPs, then suddenly someone very close to you snatches your mike and… It happened to one Zhang Bin on ...

Please help me identify this song
2008-01-18 11:14:00
This one no search engine can help me. I’ve asked a few people, none could give a definite answer. So, I’ve recorded the general melody of the song. Basically it’s an Indian (most probably Hindi) song which has been around for ages. If anybody could help identify the title and original singer of the song, it would be ...

2008-01-16 17:06:00
The dyson vacuum has become a catchphrase for state-of-the-art vacuum cleaning. What sets it apart from other vacuum cleaners is that it uses something called cyclonic separation or centrifugal particle separation, which is an invention of James Dyson, a British inventor and entrepreneur. Basically, it spins air at high velocities, causing dirt and dust to be ...

The perfect pop song
2008-01-14 17:25:00
It must possess mega hooks, i.e. melodies so sugary you’d instantly remember the melody the first time you hear it. And it sticks. A side effect is: after too many listenings you could start to get sick of it. A perfect example is the Indonesian group Letto’s “Ruang Rindu.” This song has all the qualities for ...

It must possess mega hooks, i.e. melodies so sugary you’d instantly remember the melody the first time you hear it. And it sticks. A side effect is: after too many listenings you could start to get sick of it. A perfect example is the Indonesian group Letto’s “Ruang Rindu.” This song has all the qualities for a worldwide smash. Taken off their first album which has already sold 300,000 (that’s double platinum in Indonesia), the song was written by the vocalist and keyboardist, Noe, real name Sabrang Mowo Damar Panuluh, 28. Interestingly, he listed Queen as the first in his list of favourite bands. Queen is also the favourite band of Ahmad Dhani, the leader/songwriter of Indonesia’s top group Dewa 19. The album was released in Indonesia in 2005, and in Malaysia in July 2007. Click here to listen to the song

Felix?s funniest moments during AF3
2008-01-04 01:05:00
I wrote before that I think the 3rd season of Akademi Fantasia was the time the show’s popularity peaked among Sabahans. In AF1, there were no Sabahans in the fray. In AF2, Sabahans’ interest were piqued due to the presence of Linda and Adam. In AF3, the quality was arguably even higher - Felix and ...
