2008-01-03 15:07:00
It took only a few minutes to deduce that this could very well be *the hotel*. It’s located on Jalan Zabedah, smack in the middle of Batu Pahat town. On 3rd January 2007 The Star ran a report on the hotel, did not name it, but revealed the following clues: The plush hotel, which is popular among ...

Marsha AF3?s ?Pokok Kelapak? : the best ever version
2008-01-02 01:14:00
This is so good it’s worth plugging for all it’s worth. Added to youtube at the beginning of the year by “bluemenx” (that’s his one and only video), I only knew about it a few days ago. I think the popularity of Akademi Fantasia among Sabahans peaked in 2005 (AF3) when the funny-in-his-own-eccentric-way Felix and photogenic ...

2008-01-01 15:53:00
Happy New Year everybody. The long holidays has ended, now it’s time to shift into work mode again. We’ve done it so many times before - I am sure things will soon go back to normal. Now the first headline of the year. By now this is all over the news already. Some timeline: Sometime 2005: the recording was ...

2 days after Christmas
2007-12-31 01:12:00
Boxing Day, 26th was a “rest day.” On the 27th, activities picked up again. First there was Christmas presents opening at the house. The tradition of opening presents on New Year’s eve was broken. Still, there will be gift-exchanging on New Year’s Eve (read: the cheaper presents :-)). Opening presents NOT on New Year’s Eve where ...

2007-12-29 01:24:00
Today we will have a music lesson. For that, we will choose a frequently requested song, which can be found in any karaoke bar in Malaysia. That song is “Biarku Menjadi Lilin” by the group Pelangi. A little background about the song: it was released in 1986, composed by A. Ali with lyrics by Habsah Hassan, ...

There’s no time to compose, no time to change lens, no time to do manual setting. Everything happened in a flash, then total chaos. 20 yards in front of the car, still stunned by the 3 shots being fired at Ms Bhutto and witnessing her slumping back into the vehicle she was in, John Moore, Getty Images ...

2007-12-27 01:15:00
On Christmas Day there will be so many invitations and open houses that by the end of the day, you’ll be so full you could hardly think straight. In the afternoon, I went to 3 open houses, including the Ongkili open house, hosted by Dr Jimmy Ongkili. Patricia Raymond, the 2002 Unduk Ngadau was there too: A ...

Nourishing the skin from inside out
2007-12-26 17:42:00
Logic dictates that it would be better if you could take care of your skin from inside out and not merely from the outside. Apparently that’s the hot thing now. If the idea of basking in the sun makes you immediately think of sunscreen, that’s what people usually do, right? Well, the new thing is a ...

At the end of Dewa 19’s press conference on the 14th of December (the day before their concert at Stadium Likas, Kota Kinabalu) those present were given an opportunity to take photos with them. First was the staff of Celcom, the main sponsor of their tour. Then it was the staff of Magellan Sutera, where ...

The Babagon Dam ?collapsing? scare of 6th December 2007
2007-12-17 01:30:00
On 6th December around 3.30pm while at the office in Kota Kinabalu I received a call from a colleague telling me to hurry home to Penampang because “the Babagon dam is cracked and leaking - there’s going to be a big flood.” Babagon dam, constructed in 1997, is the biggest dam in Sabah, and 70 metres ...

2007-12-16 15:53:00
When a concert advertisement says that it will start at a certain time, always add at least an hour to it. In the case of Dewa 19’s Kota Kinabalu stop, the poster said 7pm, but support act Jinbara made their appearance at 8.37pm. That’s a full 90 minutes overdue! I heard some fans had been ...

Thank you little bird. So you know what to do. Perhaps it’s the only chance to get close to Ahmad Dhani, Once and the gang. For their first Malaysian tour, top Indonesian (Surabaya) rock band Dewa 19 (was known as simply “Dewa” between 2000 and 2004) chose of all places, Stadium Likas, Kota Kinabalu . Then it’s 3 different cities every day, then a 4-day break before the final concert at Stadium Negara. Supporting acts: Dewi Dewi (Indon all-girl group), Jinbara, Ella: perhaps in that order of appearance. That would mean Dewa 19 will only take to the stage after 9pm?! Leader, keyboardist and songwriter of the band: Ahmad Dhani Prasetyo, 35. Apparently a huge Queen fan:

Justin Lusah’s Volume 2: the album that contains “Jambatan Tamparuli”
2007-12-12 01:30:00
Justin Lusah’s second album, produced in the mid 1970s, entitled “Jamba tan Tamparuli” or “Volume 2″ contained the most famous Kadazandusun song ever - the title track. Jambatan Tamparuli has been covered so many times that the younger generation might have never heard the original version. To me, the original sounds raw (in a nice way), has a beautiful melody but the beat is too quick for sumazau dancing. But what about the other 11 songs in the album? Are they any good? Short answer: This being Justin’s heyday, ALL the songs and beautiful and memorable, with at least one truly legendary track, and that is not the title track. Long answer: 3 of the best songs from Volume 1 reappeared here, in slightly different versions: Oi Darling, Kada Arau Monduli and Sumandak Mantad Sunsuron. However, I still prefer the versions in Volume 1. Then, the songs seemed more laidback, less studio-like, more like they were being played in a kampung house surrounded b...

Jo-Anna Sue Henley Rampas at ICT Gala Night, Magellan Sutera, 29th November
2007-12-10 01:39:00
After several missed opportunities, finally I saw the 2007 Unduk Ngadau / The Harvest Queen sing live. Well, what can I say, she’s an absolutely fantastic vocalist. And an Unduk Ngadau to boot. Now that’s a total package! She sang quite a few songs, all live, ably backed by the State Cultural Board, including “Adaa” (IMHO the 2004 Kadazandusun song of the year) and “Endless Love”. But the most impressive were “Tiada Lagi” where IMHO she bettered both the original by Mayang Sari and Amy Search’s version. Then she took on Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”, which to me, nearly equalled Ms Houston’s studio version! Incidentally, Whitney was in KL around the same time for the Live N Loud event. Someone blogged that Whitney made her entry at 1.40am and sang about 4 songs, and that she also sang “I will Always Love You” and from what I read, she could hardly reach the highest notes. So o...

2007-12-09 05:57:00
Yes, that means Kadazan, Dusun, Bajau and Murut language radio broadcast on Sabah VFM (the local RTM radio channel, possibly the only six-language radio channel in the world) can now be heard anywhere in the world, as long as you have internet connection. In November 2007, audio streaming via the Internet was activated for Sabah VFM. Timetable (daily, all local time of course): * Kadazan (Tangara dialect): 5:00am - 7:00am & 2:00 pm - 4:30pm. Detailed timetable. * Dusun (Bundu-Liwan dialect): 7:00am - 8:30am & 9:00 pm -11:00pm. Detailed timetable. * Bajau: 2:00am - 4:00am & 4:30pm - 7:00pm. Detailed timetable. * Murut: 4:00am - 5:00am & 7:00pm - 9:00pm. Detailed timetable. The other 2 languages are English and Chinese. Malay has its own dedicated channel. First impressions: very smooth, no stuttering, even from within the very slow SabahNet. But we’ll have to see how it goes as more people use this service. Source Kadus Entertainment

…what else but the Singaporean album “Why You So Like Dat?” by Siva Choy and the Kopi Kat Klan. At that time, I was heavily into hard rock music and would never normally entertain anything without screeching guitars. The title track of the album didn’t have anything but drum machines and Singlish rapping, but something about it sticks, and a few days ago I heard it again for the first time in more than 10 years.
