A Kaamatan / Harvest Festival message from a totally unexpected person
2007-09-05 15:38:00
Note: The usual disclaimers apply. From far away in the mountains, he took time off from the longest hide and seek game ever played to wish us Happy Kaamatan. In the National Language with authentic regional lilt, no less. With a unique Sabahan twist, and perfectly appropriate body language at the end. Better late than never.

Pictures of piling work for a self-made private house
2007-08-16 02:00:00
We are currently taking on one of the biggest projects an average individual could take in their lifetime: building one’s own house from scratch, as opposed to the more common path of purchasing a readymade house. The project started almost 10 years ago with soil top-up due to the area being flood-prone. This alone has cost ...

Pictures of Mimpian Jadi Golf and Beach Resort, Tuaran, Sabah
2007-08-08 18:14:00
I was at Mimpian Jadi Golf and Beach Resort for work on 6-7th August. Probably it’s the only resort in Sabah with Moai-like statues. Three of them, no less. I think they’re at least 6′ tall. But what really struck me was the presence of curious wooden structures inside the resort building, including some which looked like ...

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows sold 231 copies every second in first
2007-07-24 11:17:00
Released a minute past midnight 21st July 2007, probably it will become the greatest selling fiction (non-political/non-religious) book of all time. In contrast “Da Vinci Code” *only* sold 65 million copies. Also, according to Daily Express on Sunday, about 300 copies of Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat’s book “My Rewards” had been sold in a few hours. I mentioned this because Tan Sri Chong reportedly said: “On 21st July two very special books are launched: The seventh book in the Harry Potter series… and my book.” Will it outsell the top-selling book of all time: The Holy Bible itself (so far sold about 6 billion copies)? Well, only time will tell… And probably it will be the most pirated book of all time, the full version of which is available freely on the web (i.e. all 36 chapters excluding epilogue) at least 24 hours before the book launch. More trivia: The Independent (UK newspaper) said the book sold 20 million worldwide in 24 ho...

2007-07-19 00:00:00
Apparently (I have no absolute confirmation on this though) it will tell his side of the story of the reasons for his abrupt resignation as Deputy Chief Minister and State Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment which he announced on 13th April 2007, which took effect on 16th April 2007. Then, he stated “matters of ...

Exclusive expose: illegal construction on Tanjung Aru beach
2007-07-18 00:00:00
I discovered, and had photographic evidence of unlicensed sandmoving right on Tanjung Aru Beach in broad daylight last month which happened in full view of the general public, right under the noses of the authorities. A huge mound of sand ready to be illegally transferred on lorries. Note the proximity to the sea: Witness the sheer destruction ...

Engrish at Cempaka Square signage
2007-07-17 00:00:00
Cempaka Square is a well-known nightspot at Towering, Penampang. Unfortunately the recent renovation did not include verifying the message conveyed by this sign prominently displayed at the back. Spotted the afternoon of 23rd June 2007: I believe it should simply read as follows: “To prevent accidents, please follow traffic instructions from our security personnel.”

Malaysia?s AFC Asian Cup 2007: the worst ever debacle?
2007-07-16 00:00:00
Update 16th July: The FAM president refused to resign, and instead said: I will do a “general overhaul” of the FAM. I will personally conduct an inquiry into the team’s inept performances. Who does not want the national team to do well at international matches? This is my responsibility … we will not run away … we ...

Tintin in the Congo: controversy sells
2007-07-15 00:00:00
Tintin in the Congo , originally published in French in 1930-31 gained extensive media coverage in mid-July 2007 as the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE), an equal rights organisation in the UK called on bookshops to stop selling them. Tintin in the Congo is a comic book which depicts a young, white journalist’s adventures in Congo, Africa ...

For Malaysians: must-see soccer / football matches of the year
2007-07-10 00:00:00
Asian Cup Finals: we only made it because we’re the hosts. The only time we ever made it because we could play football at the level it demands was closer to 30 years ago. We are in the same group as China and Iran, 2 teams which we were more than capable of matching then. ...

Gathering of bloggers in Kota Kinabalu, 6th July 2007
2007-07-08 00:00:00
A big thanks to Jacq and Daniel for taking the trouble to organise what could very well be the biggest ever gathering of (mostly) Sabahan bloggers in Kota Kinabalu. I think it would never be easy to get people who’ve never met IRL to shake off the “social stiffness” in a few hours. Add to that ...

Dead professional wrestlers gallery
2007-06-30 00:10:00
tmz.com published a gallery of dead professional wrestlers. It almost looks like a who’s who of wrestling. All dead before they turned 50. The least that this tells me is that: do not let your kids get into pro wrestling! Some of those in the list, excluding Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit. Andre the Giant, 46, WWF ...

Pictures of Lok Kawi Wildlife Park / Zoo, Sabah
2007-06-26 00:16:00
I visited the Lok Kawi Zoo on Saturday 16th June. Actually the signboard says “Lok Kawi Wildlife Park ”, so this could be a source of confusion, as people might be looking high and low for the word “zoo”. The entrance is nicely designed and looks very inviting: Entry charge is quite steep. The rate shown below is ...

?Tiwas Kotoh? lyrics too cryptic for children (apa itu burung?)
2007-06-24 00:00:00
“Tiwas Kotoh” [Kadazandusun words, which is a derogatory interjection, roughly means: you deserved it], that hip-hop/rap song by Lydia Kalidin and Asmin Mudin has become something of a cult favourite, thanks to its rather explicit lyrics (by Malaysian standards of course). I can’t ever imagine it being played on radio but it should be a hit ...
