The main takeaway is that when you enable encryption on your wireless router, use WPA encryption instead of WEP, because it's better and stronger. Unlike WEP, WPA uses a 48-bit initialization vector and a 128-bit encryption key. More importantly, however, WPA uses what's called the Temporary Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP). Whereas WEP recycles the same key for encrypting all the packets flowing across the network, WPA's TKIP changes the encryption key every single time a packet is transmitted. This, combined with the use of longer keys, prevents a hacker from compromising a router simply by passively observing a large enough set of packet transmissions. Tibet Talks Get Underway: Negotiations with Chinese CharacteristicsSo, as predicted in my previous post, the talks between the Dalai Lama's representatives and Beijing are happening today in Shenzhen. Expectations on both sides seem low, to put it mildly. President Hu Jintao, who is in Tokyo, did express some hopes that the talks might produce some results. On the other hand an editorial in the Tibet Daily-echoing similar articles in state media--repeated all the allegations against the "Dalai clique" being behind a conspiracy to foment the unrest. Microsoft Walks Away From Yahoo Deal Michael Arrington submits: Microsoft (MSFT) will announce shortly that they have withdrawn their offer to acquire Yahoo (YHOO). Talks between the two companies and their advisors broke down earlier today, according to a source close to Microsoft, after a failure to come to agreement on price and other terms. A final meeting occurred today at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, between Jerry Yang and David Filo from Yahoo, and Kevin Johnson and Steve Ballmer from Microsoft. At that meeting, Yahoo said the lowest price they could accept was $37/share. Microsoft reportedly went as high as $33/share. Yang and Filo returned to California shortly after the meeting, and Yang then had a subsequent phone conversation with Ballmer.
