Switching hosts & reorganizing
2007-08-26 20:53:00
This site has been loading too slowly, especially the administrative end. I'm going to try out a new host this week and if the performance improves, I'll stick with it. I'll also be reorganizing my interests into separate blogs (more on that once the server move and some other stuff is completed).

Hair loss - coming to terms (or ... I'm going bald, dammit!)
2007-08-20 05:50:00
This was not supposed to happen. At least not according to the wisdom of the hair gene, that they're passed on from opposite-sex parents: boys get hair genes from mom, who got her hair genes from dad. I definitely wanted to believe that, since Mom has a head of thick hair and Gramps died with a head full of thick, silver hair. Grey hair is definitely a better option than no hair. read more

Linkworth strikes again!
2007-08-09 18:04:00
I had my 3rd Linkworth advertiser sign up, which is pretty impressive for a new blog. Linkworth just seems to sell itself :-) I'll report back on how the recurring income turns out from these first few sign-ups.

Why I decided to homeschool
2007-08-07 02:27:00
1. We're attachment parents, and are very invested in developing the bond with our children. By no means do I think that the process is complete when the child is of schooling age. Sending our children to school would defeat the purpose of attachment parenting. We might as well throw the past 5 years away. read more

How does one blog without time or energy?
2007-08-06 08:06:00
I've heard of some blogging ethic where you have to write x times a week or in more extreme cases x times a day. If I can get 2 entries published a week I'm doing well. Blog s should have an ebb and flow though, more like life. I've been so busy the past two weeks with web design & development that blogging, affiliate marketing and other stuff's gone right out the window. I suppose I have to get better at writing in advance and scheduling, but so far saving ideas for writing later hasn't worked out for me - the spark that starts an idea is mighty elusive within days, and sometimes hours.

I made a Facebook account
2007-07-31 18:47:00
I actually don't 'get' the whole Facebook phenomenon, but that's probably because I've been out of college for years. It may be a useful networking tool, so let's see what happens. I promise no incriminating pictures of me will ever show up there ;-)

Linkworth - benefits for advertisers
2007-07-30 05:33:00
I can see why LinkWorth would be attractive to advertisers. Partners (ie people like myself) and advertisers have access to the same dashboard. Advertise rs can find out quite a bit about a partner before decided to promote on the partner site. While Google AdWords is the industry leader, an advertiser who'd like greater control over where they promote should seriously consider LinkWorth. read more

What students did before Facebook...
2007-07-30 01:37:00
Yesterday a New York Times article caught my eye, an article on letters Hillary Clinton wrote in college. It was a mildly interesting read, as she evolved from Republican to activist democrat, but a comment from her partner in correspondence caught my attention: “They are windows into a time and a place and a journey of self-discovery,” he said in an interview. “This was what college students did before Facebook .” read more

take it easy - downtempo mix by arphaus
2007-07-29 21:10:00
This is my one and only dj mix, made in April 2002 with Ableton Live. It's on the studio of side of mixes as I had a pretty good idea beforehand what the sequence of tracks was going to be. I did throw in a live track of my own (ie firing off loops and such). The first track has some very obvious audio artifacts because I pitched it up from something like 75bpm to 90-ishbpm. read more

Good people are out there
2007-07-28 04:02:00
Yesterday, our car broke down. Kinda - it stopped running, and it turned out that it was out of oil. (Seemingly the 'low oil' sensor is busted, so we had no idea how low.) We were on the way to visit my parents and thankfully were only about 5 miles from their house. I'd called my dad and asked him if he had some oil and a container for gas. While we were waiting, a guy in a nice Jeep pulled up and offered a ride to the next service station. It was less than a mile, and I was considering walking, but the distance isn't relevant. It was just receiving a helping hand from a stranger. read more

What wisdom did I seek when I was 10?
2007-07-24 00:39:00
I busted out some old Indian comic books last week and out of one of them fell a little piece of paper. I had been writing down some pithy quotes to guide my young self - here they are: Fear of the unknown brings no gain: not bad, definitely something I believe in Mighty brawn is no match for nimble brain: perfect for a future geek who's had trouble benching 100 lbs Silence is golden: not surprising - I was a pretty quiet kid read more

Farewell, Harry Potter
2007-07-22 20:27:00
Saturdays are usually a big blogging day for me, but I spent most of yesterday reading the last Harry Potter book instead. When I read the first book years ago, I was non-plussed and viewed it as little more than a good book for young readers. I was influenced by having read The Lord of the Rings a few months earlier, and the first book paled in comparison to Tolkien's epic. read more

Clarifying the LinkWorth affiliate program
2007-07-18 16:56:00
The affiliate sign-ups I've had so far are for advertisers rather than partners like myself. An 'advertiser' would be the company paying LinkWort h to promote its products or services, while a 'partner' would be someone like me. The upshot is that I would receive 5% of the advertiser's payment transactions as long as their account is active. The potential is mindboggling. read more

LinkWorth - perfect for brand new bloggers
2007-07-16 23:28:00
I got an email today from LinkWorth that I'd been approved for another product of theirs. Lo and behold, there was more money waiting for me when I logged into my dashboard. Cool! I think I'm earning money from referrals so far, but I can't figure out from the stats where the money is actually coming from. I've contacted them to figure it out. I'm surprised though - I'm close to my first payout! Not bad for a week's worth. read more

Unschooling at work? My son wants to learn to read
2007-07-15 21:39:00
Last week I was out in the yard with my son. We'd been hanging out together, keeping an eye on our duckies while we played and chatted. He's been surprising us lately with his creativity (making up songs about almost anything, dictating a full story) and thoughtfulness (ok - we think it's thoughtfulness when we ask 'what's up' and he goes 'nothing, i'm just thinking'). read more

Monetizing brand new blogs
2007-07-14 22:41:00

Making money blogging - who and why, with a list of resources
2007-07-13 23:39:00
I'm new to the world of 'professional blogging.' I'm not convinced that professional bloggers are even real, but that seems to be the case. At least more so than dragons, crocodiles in sewer systems and giant rats. I would never have considered it if I didn't have to think outside the box to realize a dream that's outside the box. I want to move to Costa Rica, become a stay-at-home dad and spend as much time with my family as possible. I'm not looking to make more money than I do now - I'm actually looking to make less and live more simply. read more

Any LinkWords yet?
2007-07-13 22:37:00
I think I saw one LinkWord link so far, and upon refresh it disappeared. The jury's out on LinkWords as an alternative to Google Adsense, but let's get some more content going and see what happens. On the plus side, I made my first money from blogging thanks to someone else signing up for LinkWorth! (Not counting the $4 Google is holding ransom until I send more clicks their way via Adsense...)
Potty training joy: picking up steaming hot poop
2007-07-11 17:56:00
One thing I never really considered prior to parenting is the prospect of potty training. There's a lot we don't really think about before having kids and that may be at the top of the list. I definitely didn't think I'd be picking up steaming hot poop from the floor. My little girl (2) is potty training. She doesn't like diapers anymore and in the last week has been really good about peeing in either a potty seat or on the throne with one of those insert dillies. This was after 1-2 weeks of a lot of peeing on the floor. read more

The 4-Hour Workweek: a review for non-believers
2007-07-10 05:25:00
I was prepared to hate this book. I really was. If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. And I was totally turned off by the phrase the New Rich. The acquisition of wealth for the sake of just being wealthy is not a pursuit of mine. But ... what if there was some good in the book? There could be a useful tidbit of information here or there - liking one aspect of a book doesn't require liking everything in it. I figured I'd give it a go, and downloaded a copy of the audio book. If it was as horrible as it sounded, it would be no loss. read more

Testing LinkWords instead of Adsense
2007-07-09 20:57:00
This blog is brand-new and I'm focussed on building it the right way. My other blog, Tiny Grass is older and has had Adsense for awhile. The ads never seemed to really fit the site and Adsense revenue there has been miniscule. I'm going to give LinkWords (as well a other products by LinkWorth) a go and see what happens.

Green living: personal evolution step three
2007-07-09 05:32:00
In spring 2006, things had settled down. Our son had a 1 year old sister and my web design work was steady. I worked a solid 15-20 hours per week on that and started developing My Own Company with a partner. In the span of about a month, I read and saw 3 things that completely changed my outlook on the world. 1: The Omnivore's Dilemma read more

Green living: personal evolution step two
2007-07-08 02:47:00
In 2004, we bought our house. Our first and so far only house. Within two months, the joy of We're not wasting money on rent! gave way to Um - maybe a condo with a fixed maintenance payment wouldn't have been so bad. I jest - we had NO interest in a condo as we wanted our own yard for our little boy to run around in. We tried our best to stick to a budget when househunting and we stayed within it, but it was still a stretch. read more
