The Next Step
2007-11-21 02:49:00 Hello everyone... I am excited to start my new career and I am antsy to get my first case. I guess this is normal for most new attorneys. I have done alot of soul searching and now have a good idea on where I want to go from here. My current job has opened my eyes to the fact I do not want to practice in a large firm. A large firm does give one a feel of security; however, it also seems to put you on the track of working in a basement. A supervising attorney once told me that by working in a large firm it could be three to five years until you see your first client. I wish I could say more about my current position but I will leave at this.So where now? Well that is a good question. I am attacking the "job search" on a three prong approach:1. I am going to contact the small and medium size firm in the local vicinity. I hope to find an associate position or at least a mentor. 2. Networking: I will continue to netowrk at bar functions.3. Business Approach: I am working o... More About: Step
Official Now
2007-11-16 04:26:00 It is official. I am an Attorney licensed to practice in the State of Texas. My mom came down to Austin to watch the ceremony. My mom, Clay and I drove down to Austin on November 12. At approx. 10:45 I was sworn in with approx. 3,000 other attorneys. I thought the cermony was pretty cool. The Supreme Court of Texas and the Court of Criminal Appeals opened a session. While the introductions took a little time, the rest of the ceremony went pretty smoothly. I will post pictures soon. Stay tuned for updates. :) -- Jay More About: Official
I'm officially an Attorney (sorda)
2007-11-05 03:17:00 Ok... I lost my last post. I PASSED THE TEXAS BAR!!!!!! I am extremely excited. I would have posted sooner; however, I had to take time to relax and celebrate. I would like thank everyone who stood by me over the years. Yes, through the constant talk of the "law" and for those non-lawyer types who attended law school functions where the entire crowd was doing nothing but talking about the law. I would like to especially thank my mom and Clay. I know it was a long haul over the years. A special thanks to some of my close friends and colleagues -- Judge Taylor, Staff Attorney Jim Longino, Scott Hall, and Cameron McCree. Oh year, and Ashley Hudson. The list goes on and on. I hope to highlight more in the coming days.I state "I'm officially an Attorney (sorda)." I received a letter for the Board of Law Examiners and they asked for more $$$$. I expected that but I did not know it would be so soon :) I immediately signed the registration form and sent in my dues. I expect ...
Life Passing By
2007-10-14 17:44:00 Ok, allow to me to begin by apologizing for the delay in this post. It has been almost two weeks since my last post.It is has been pretty crazy here. Last week I lost my cell phone. Now, if you know me, you can only imagine the headache that created. I literally live by my phone. My cell phone is the only contact number for job leads. We do not use our home phone at all. If the house phone rings, it is a telemarketer (which surprisingly -- we do not know the home phone number -- however, the telemarketers have gotten a hold of it). Not to mention, I use my phone to check my email and to assit me navigate here in Dallas.Well, I lost it last week. I am glad we had insurance on it. I remember the sales rep asking if I wanted insurance on the phone and I heard my mother's voice loud and clear "As many times as you loose that thing, I don't know why you don't have insurance on it". Let's look at why such a statement was sparked (rough estimates looking back)--2000 -- 2 New Cell Phone... More About: Life , Passi , Passing
Fort Worth
2007-10-01 16:11:00 We went to Fort Wort h this weekend. It was a lot of fun. It is the first time that I have been in Fort Worth. I traveled through Fort Worth once before. I think it was when I was around 16 when I drove through the city. My mom allowed me to borrow the family car and drive to Dallas and visit a friend of mine in Dallas. When I look back at my mom's decision, I realize how big of a decision that was for my mom. Think about it -- my mother allowed a 16 year to drive the family car 6 hours away. At the time we lived in a city of about 3,000 people. She allowed me to drive to a city with over 5 million people with a traffic like few cities. I remember telling my mom that I would be fine. Now that I am substitute teaching and working with teenagers ranging from 12 to 18 years old (adults), I realize how much trust that took. Well, I will leave it at that. I might expand on that experience in the near future.-- JayPowered by ScribeFire.
Finality and the Judicial System
2007-09-05 19:09:00 I must say that I am awed by the finality in the judicial systems. For better or worse, it is a cornerstone in our legal system. I do not know how it compares to other legal systems; however, when a court reaches a decision in this country it is almost rock solid. I was reminded of the finality when I heard Senator Craig is going to try to have his guilty plea overturned. It is not my intention, nor will I, provide a legal analysis of his chances. I will that to the pundits and -- oh yeah -- the parties involved. I will say that overturning a guilty plea is a high standard. The high standard serves a strong public interest. By ensuring a court's decision is "final", the public can rely on the direction of the law and how it will be applied. I would say almost every facet of our general life benefits. From families knowing that their children will not be pulled from their home to business knowing that their conduct is inline with the law ensuring the markets can rely on bu... McKinney Officer Accused of Sexual Harassment
2007-09-02 17:34:00 Dallas Morning News reported an issue with a McKinney (a local city near Dallas) Police Officer Accuse of sexual harassment. It is alleged the officer offered a fellow female officer $20 dollars to do a "pole dance." I do not want to speak to the sexual harassment issue reported in the paper. However, I do wish to comment on the Capt. Roland's position. Capt. Roland is a police spokesman. When Dallas Morning News requested documents relating to the incident, the police department fought the release of the documents. The Police did not feel they should be required to release disciplinary records. In fact, Capt. Roland claims these types of disclosures are absurd. Specifically, he asks whether he should be required to release documents to disciplinary actions taken against officers who are late to work. Capt. Roland believes he should not be required to release those documents.I respectfully dissent. Capt. Roland and the police department work for the general population. I ... Expo and the Computer in a Box
2007-09-01 18:32:00 This may look like an ordinary table but it is far from it. Last Tuesday, I worked at a T-Mobile Expo . I was responsible to demo-ing products and explaining the technology behind the product. It was a lot of fun and I was getting paid to do it. What more can you ask for?Microsoft had representatives at the expo as well. In fact, the above picture is a picture of a computer built into a table. Sounds exciting right? Well, it was extremely cool. Especially, if you are tech savvy. I can honestly say that I have never seen anything like it. The computer responds to touch commands. The gentleman had a phone with him. When he placed the cell phone on the table a circle surrounded the phone and knew exactly what type of phone it was. They were able to put songs into the phone by click and dragging the phone and many other cool things. It was truly amazing. There is not price tag on it as of yet. From the looks of it, it won't be a product that will be ready for your dinner table anytime s... More About: Computer
Arkansas Bar Results
2007-08-31 22:54:00 For those who do not know, I attended law school at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. It is a great school and a great area of the country. I assure you it challenges all your preconceived notions of Arkansas. It is a mini-metropolitan area. Substitute Teaching
2007-08-31 18:12:00 Well, I have some good news. I will substitute teaching for Dallas Independent School District and for Plano Independent School District. I am excited about the position(s). I enjoy kids and I enjoy teaching. There was a point in my education where I considered teaching as full time proposition. I ultimately decided that I wanted to do more and if I did not go after my law degree I would regret it in the long run.I decided to look into the Dallas ISD with greater detail. I wanted to know more about the school system. Here are quick facts:Years: 2006-2007Dallas ISD Total Budget: 1.85 Billion DollarsTotal Number of Students: 160,902Student Ethnic Composition: Hispanic -- 64.1%African American -- 29.7%White -- 5.1%Asian -- 0.9%American Indian -- 0.2%Total Staff: 20,077 (Teac her 10,712)Source: 001_0607factsheet.pdf -- http://www.dallasisd.org/about/geninfo.ht mI let you chew on those statistics for awhile. AT&T Cancellation Notice and Corporations -- The Good and Evil
2007-08-23 17:49:00 I have said that I do not plan to "rant" on this blog. I am going to break that rule for this post.I must say that I have nothing against corporations. In fact, it is likely that I will be working for one in the near future. And in America, customers interact with corporations on a daily basis. As a consumer, however, there is one rule that everyone must understand -- "The corporation is not looking out for your best interest, they are looking out for their own best interest."Before I get on the subject of AT&T, I would like to describe a recent event. We have lived in Texas for three months. For the past three months, I had a gym who was of the mind set that they could continue charging me for a service I was not using. I signed a contract for two years; however, in that contract it was clear that I could cancel the contract if I moved more than 50 miles from the gym. I contacted the gym, in writing, and notified them of my move. Being the pack rat (I get that from my m... More About: Evil , Corporations , Notice , Good , Good and Evil
The Freshman.. Uhhh.. College 15
2007-08-22 03:02:00 I read an article yesterday which claimed to provide advice in avoiding the "Freshman 15." The "Freshman 15" refers to the 15 pounds a freshman in college will gain when he/she goes to college. This got me to thinking about my situation and several conversation with friends around me -- I have been in school for 7 years. Based on the Freshman 15 theory, I should have gained 105 lbs. Fortunately, I did not gain 105 lbs over the 7 years. I have gained weight though. When I left the Marine Corps in 2000, I weighed in at 175. I weigh in at 210 lbs today. YIKES. A good friend of mine had a Marine Corps wedding just last year. A year ago January, I spoke with the groom and he encouraged me to get in shape so that I could wear my Blues to the wedding. On the wedding day, I tried on my Blues and decided it would be best I wear a suit. That was the first warning shot. I lost about weight prior to graduation (I was at 198); however, Bar Study took its toll. I can prove I sat in ... More About: College , Coll , Reshma
The Process
2007-08-15 17:51:00 I was getting a little frustrated with the job search process. My frustration may have been a displaced. I know I am marketable and I have a strong unique background. I went to an interview on Monday. It was great. While I wish to remain discreet, I hope it works out. The company is a strong company. The office was great and the interviewer was direct and to the point. I enjoyed walking through the office space."Discreet"... Hmmmm... I think this is often overlooked by individuals who blog on the internet. People should know and expect others to be looking on the internet to gain additional information about people. About a year ago, I was informed that an employer was checking all applicant's information on the web. The employer was going to applicant's myspace pages and facebook pages. Seriously. I can't be sure what the purpose was exactly; however, I am confident the employer was checking whether the person would "fit". What does it exactly mean to "fit"? The ... More About: Process
West Park Mall
2007-08-08 16:37:00 This is a scene from the West Park mall. It was abnormally quite for a mall. As I have indicated in other posts, I am not a fan of malls. I really do not know why. I guess it is the fact that I do not typically have a lot of money to blow at a mall. Perhaps, it is my pragmatic approach to money. Oh, they may call that being frugal.I had an amazing experience today. While it can be a little frustrating going through this job search process, I am keeping my hopes high. You might be asking what was the amazing experience? I have decided to go back into the IT field. I have some career path options to decide on. I may have finally made that decision. In any event, I needed references relating to the IT field. While I have done some extensive IT work while in Law School, my primary focus was finishing my degree. I contacted some old friends and colleagues requesting for references. I sincerely try to stay in touch with everyone. However, I had not talked to these colleagu... More About: Mall
Wine Fish Bowl and the Search
2007-08-04 20:59:00 Hello everyone. I wish I had a better picture of this wine room; however, I think you can get the idea. This is inside a sushi restaurant we ate at this past week. To give you a better idea, allow me to describe the place. The restaurant is located in the West Village area. When you walk in, to the right/center of the room is a "caged" area. More accurately, the "center" room is like a glass aquarium. There are wine racks in between the two glass walls. Wine is stacked up to the ceiling. Inside the center of the fish bowl is a table that seats about 15 people. Career Talk -- As many of you know, I am in the search of a good job. I can honestly say this process is not the easiest. I spoke with a great individual yesterday. Several years back he made the move from out of state to Texas. He graduated from law school and decided to live in Texas. Based on what we discussed yesterday, he had similar struggles and ultimately opened his own practice. He also gave me career ... More About: Fish , Search , Bowl
The Hunt is On
2007-08-01 01:01:00 As many of you know, I am looking for gainful employment. I am trying to stay in the legal field. I feel that is the best way to excel in the community. I am fearful that if I leave the legal field, I will lose the awesome potential of meeting other legal colleagues. I had an interview today. The firm I met with was extremely nice and very honest. There is something to be said about being honest and direct. I appreciate candid questions. I hope they felt my responses were direct as well. I might have misunderstood one of their questions; however, I must stand or fall on the sword. There is no real way to "revise" a response. Well, that is all I will say for now. I hope the firm gives me the opportunity. However, if they do not, it was a good experience. Sincerely,JayTechnorati Tags: interview, law firm, candid response, candorPowered by ScribeFire. The Campus Building
2007-07-29 02:15:00 Being done with the exam has opened up my weekends. I was thinking back the other day. I have not had a summer off since high school. I did have a brief few weeks between undergrad and law school; however, it was very brief. Prior to that, my last "open" time off was the summer between my Junior and Senior year in high school. While I don't want to give my age away, that was over 11 years ago. After graduating high school, I went immediately into Marine Corps boot camp. In fact, I shipped out to San Diego three days after walking across the stage. This time right now is so great. The last two days has felt great. The picture above is a picture of building that we passed today. After driving through the downtown area, we headed back up to Plano. While in Plano, I noticed this odd looking building in the distance. A picture of the "odd" building is above. The picture does not do the building justice. It is extremely large. We took the picture from a circle drive. The... More About: Building , Campus
Finished
2007-07-27 23:36:00 Welcome to the new formatted site. By the way, be looking for some exciting news soon. I hope to launch a new site in the coming month. The site's content will be more factual and for all you news junkies (I include myself in that description). I will keep you all posted. This site is doing great. We have more and more viewers each day. I will soon open the site up for comments. Please leave a few words and thoughts. The Texas Bar Exam is finally over. I finished the exam at 3:53 yesterday afternoon. I was held "captive" until about 4:10. The examiners would not allow people to leave if you finished in the last 15 minutes. They claim some type of security issue. I haven't quite figured out what security issue that is and this point it does not matter. The Exam -- well, I have no clue on how I did. I the hardest part was on Wednesday. The national test -- the Multistate Bar Exam -- was on Wednesday. I don't know quite what it tests. I studied hard for the exam to include the multista... MBE
2007-07-26 02:41:00 Ok... The MBE was a whole different experience. I followed the advice of those who went before me -- work on the problems, look at examples, and work under timed conditions. I want to think that will make the difference in the end. I guess I will find out in about 3 to 4 months (November). I felt the answers to the questions were convoluted. In the end it was difficult to determine exactly which answer they were wanting you to choose from. I am not alone in that assessment. I spoke with numerous people around me and it seems they felt the same. (Or at least that was their lip service -- it is difficult to judge what other people think regarding exams). I will talk about the exam more in future post. Right now -- I am going to review some outlines for tomorrow's big day. Twelve essays covering -- bankruptcy, business associations, consumer law, family law, community property, federal taxation, real property, oil and gas, trusts, guardianships, uniform commercial code, wi...
The Bar and You Tube
2007-07-24 04:04:00 Well... The Bar is tomorrow. I am so happy to have the Bar begin and for it soon to be over. I am sitting in my "swanky" hotel.. By the way, what is that color... I can't tell. Well, it is an economy hotel. I don't mind staying in an economy hotel. I was not born with a golden, or a silver spoon for that matter, in my mouth. My mom did everything she could to raise my brother and I. I must say she did a great job. She has a son who has completed law school and another son who has three wonderful children. Well, I was channel surfing this evening. During my channel surfing, I caught part of the CNN you tube debates. I did not get to watch the debate itself; however, I am impressed with the format. While I am not naive enough to believe the format changed the overall answers of the candidates, I am fairly certain that the addition of the user submitted questions has added a dimension to presidential debates. Anderson Cooper stated on CNN tonight that he suspects futur... More About: You Tube , Hotel , Tube
