Tater's last day of school
2007-06-10 20:00:00 What a great last day! The parents started the morning off with a power point presentation created by Tater's class. Yes, kindergarten students now learn how to make power point presentations. Amazing, isn't it? Each child chose a specific animal to learn about and then created two "slides" to tell about the animal. They each stood at the appropriate time and read what they had learned. After that, his teacher presented another power point show. This one had us all crying. As the background music played "Let them be little" by Billy Dean, she had a baby picture of each child then a current picture. Oh, it was so sweet and sad at the same time. Our babies are growing up. They're going to be first graders next year...unbelievable. As homeroom mom, I also arranged for the kids to have a pizza party to celebrate their last day of kindergarten. Other parents brought sweets, juice boxes, etc. They loved it. His teacher also presented each child with an award that exemplified their pers... More About: School
Bubby's a singer at heart
2007-06-10 19:49:00 Bubby tried out for the 4th & 5th grade chorus at school a few weeks ago. He loves to sing and would be a wonderful addition to the chorus if I do say so myself. He had to wait until he received his last report card in the mail to see if he made it or not. A few days ago, as I was retrieving the mail from our box, I saw an envelope sticking out that had his school's return address on it. Of course Bubby is at his Nana and Papa's in N.C., but I opened it anyway. Sure enough, it was his report card, which he did great on. Most importantly, however, was a letter from the music teacher! She wasted no time in getting right to the point. It read: "Congratulations! "Bubby" has been selected to become a member of the chorus for the years 2007 - 2008 and 2008 - 2009. In addition to successfully completing the elementary school vocal audition, your child was recommended by classroom teachers and related arts teachers. The boys are off on vacation...
2007-06-05 19:43:00 The boys and I will be accompanying hubby to Hickory, N.C. tonight. He has a meeting there tomorrow morning. While he's at the meeting Darrin's parents are going to meet me in Statesville to pick up the boys. So, I guess hubby and I are in for a little vacation ourselves. Gee & Paw will be coming to pick up Tater Tot on Friday at Nana & Papa's house. Bubby will get to stay at Nana & Papa's all by himself until June 15th. Tater Tot will get to do the same at Gee's house. They are both in for a week of spoiling I'm sure. They are catered to and can do no wrong at their grandparent's houses. I have no right to say anything really. I used to spend almost every weekend at my Mamaw & Papaw's house. I was treated like a little princess and loved it. I do have big plans while they are gone....I hope to paint Tater Tot's new bed and rearrange his room. I also hope to paint the laundry room and powder rooms. Now remember, that is my plan. Of course hubby and I will have a few... More About: Vacation , Shane , Boys , The Boys
I Won an Award!
2007-06-01 05:28:00 An award has been given to me. It's not the most coveted of awards, but I have won it nonetheless. "It" is the Worst Mother of the Year award! Bubby 's school held an awards ceremony at 9:00 this morning. For the past three years I have always attended this event. Of course I have always been notified prior to the ceremony that Bubby would be receiving an award of some type. This year I received no such notification. Therefore, I did not go. Well, Bubby sadly informed me when I picked him up from school today that he did indeed receive three awards! WHAT?? I was furious. To make me feel even worse he said, "I looked everywhere but I didn't see you. I smiled just in case you were out there somewhere." Talk about breaking my heart. At that very moment I felt like absolutely strangling the life out of his teacher. What wasn't I told. Why wasn't a little note sent home letting me know he was going to be recognized? I immediately called Hubby and told him what had happened. Needless ... More About: Award , Ward
My New Best Friend -- Update
2007-05-30 00:27:00 I have a new best friend! Granted, I just met her today, but she really is my new best friend. I met her at precisely 2:45 p.m. Not only is she my new best friend, but she's also my chiropractor. Today was my initial visit so she did x-rays, exam and a 15 minute TENS treatment. The TENS treatment felt oh so good and banished the pain for about 45 minutes. I go back tomorrow to get the results of my x-rays and tests. She will then tell me what the course of treatment will be. I don't care what it is, I'll do it if it will get rid of my persistent back pain. She also gave me some killer gel to rub on my back. It's called Cryoderm and is so much more potent and long lasting than Icy Hot. I'll let you now how tomorrow goes. I'm excited to see what she has to say. Cross your fingers and toes for me, please.**Update **Well today, 5/30/07, she showed me my x-rays. My right hip bone is slightly higher then my left. Awake at 4:00 a.m.
2007-05-27 11:08:00 Yes, unfortunately it's 4:00 a.m. and I'm wide awake. Believe you me it is not by choice. Why then are my baby blues open at this hour? Well, let's just say that the noises coming from the opposite side of my bed aren't really the kind that would lull anyone to sleep. They are quite the opposite really. They are loud, rhythmic, annoying snores. I know he can't help it, but that doesn't make it any more enjoyable. He's actually quite funny about it when I gently kick, poke or punch him. He'll softly say "sorry" or "yes dear?" And, it doesn't matter which position he sleeps in. He snores while laying on either side, back or even his stomach. That man is talented I tell you.Luckily this isn't an every night occurrence. It does happen 3 or 4 nights a week though. Enough to make me weary eyed in the morning. That's what makes the hours of 8:00 a.m. - noon so grand for me. I get the boys off to school and then hubby leaves for work. Those four hours are then my prime time for u... More About: Awake
Putting the "Memorial" back in Memorial Day
2007-05-26 21:47:00 The following is taken from The Memorial Day Foundation website. The "Memorial" in Memorial Day has been ignored by too many of us who are beneficiaries of those who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom and liberty. Often we do not observe the day as it should be, a day where we actively remember those Americans including our ancestors, family members, loved ones neighbors and friends who have paid the price for the blessings of liberty. You can change this by doing the following:- By wearing your Memorial Day Button from the first of May until Memorial Day.- By visiting cemeteries and placing flags or flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes.- By flying the U.S. Flag at half-staff until noon. Memorial Day is a day of "National Mourning."- By attending religious services of your choice. - By visiting memorials.- By participating in a "National Moment of Remembrance" at 3:00 PM local time, to pause and think upon the meaning of the day and for taps to be played where possible... Remembering my Grandfather
2007-05-23 19:50:00 James Otis CookOctober 10, 1920 - May 23, 2005Two years. How can that seem like an eternity? It feels like ages ago that I received my last hug from Papaw. It was Mother's Day weekend of 2005 when I would last feel his soft, gentle embrace. The last time I would hear him tell Darrin "you take care of my girl." The last time he would occupy "his" chair of honor at the dining room table. The last time we would all be together with him at the same time. I knew, deep down, when we left that Sunday that it would be the last time I saw Papaw alive. He had found out about his cancer only one year before. He had retired only six months before. His health declined rapidly. We all knew, but didn't talk about, the inevitable that was sure to come. But, there was no preparing myself. The call came at noon that day in May two years ago. I answered as always with a cheerful "hello." As soon as my cousin, Toni, uttered my name.....I knew why she had called. I could hear the despair in her voice.... 2007-05-22 21:24:00 The last two days have been quite productive actually! Between hubby and I we've:scrubbed and cleaned the screened in porchpurchased new furniture for said porchput up our above ground poolcleaned out all kitchen cabinetswashed said cabinetsorganized said cabinetscleaned the dishwasher inside and outcleaned out and washed the refrigeratortaken a heap of stuff to Goodwillcleaned the living room carpetpurchased Tater Tot a new bed (pics to come soon)The feeling of accomplishment is so very nice. For instance: cleaning, washing and organizing both pantries, cleaning the upstairs carpet, organizing the boys closets, giving both dogs a bath, and the list goes on. I do not see rest in my near future, but that's the way I like it really! More About: Life , Misc , Shane
A Mayberry Mother's Day
2007-05-15 13:27:00 As we did last year, we spent this Mother's Day in Pilot Mountain, N.C. with hubby's parents and brother. It's always fun to go this time of year so we can attend the Pilot Mountain Mayfest. There's always something for everyone...a car show, tons of vendors selling their wares, carnival rides and delicious food. And, can you believe we didn't take one picture? Well, we did last year so those will have to do. The boys also got me the cutest card. It said "Happy Mother's Day from the "not me's" and "I Didn't-do-it's" ......also known as your kids. Boys is that ever the truth! Our two doggies even got me a card. I'm not exactly sure how they pulled that one off but they did. More About: Holidays , Shane , S Day
Healed back.....Broken bone
2007-05-11 03:55:00 I am glad to report that 1 1/2 days in bed has helped my back tremendously. Hubby has been so good in taking care of the boys. The boys have really doated on me too, which I loved! They made me "get well" cards, brought me anything I needed and even layed with me in bed. What's the first thing I did today since I'm feeling better? Clean house. Yep, hubby can't be responsible for the boys and the house at the same time. But, that's okay with me. I'm just thankful I was able to clean today. Thanks to all of you who sent me well wishes...they worked! In other news, Tater Tot has broken his pinky finger. He, Bubby and Daddy were jumping on the trampoline and Tater just landed on it the wrong way. So, he's wearing a splint for four weeks. He's doing really good at keeping it on. Unfortunetly it's on his right hand and he's right handed. That makes for sloppy writing, but his teacher is fine with it of course. He is six years old and this is his second broken bone. Blogging from Bed
2007-05-09 02:51:00 I come to you today from the comfort of my bed. As seems to happen all to often these days, I am down in my back again. No doctor necessary. Been there done that. Prescription anti-inflammatory and pain meds along with my trusty heating pad will do the trick. I really do not know what I did to hurt it this time. Past culprits have been: bending over to pick up a pen, coughing and walking. It really doesn't take much. The good news is as long as I don't move it doesn't hurt! So my bed is the best place for me right now. A day or two of taking it easy should be enough to let it heal (I hope). Of course before I go to sleep for the night, hubby will rub some "Icy Hot" on it. Boy, I love that stuff. An added bonus.....my being immobile gave hubby and the boys the opportunity to spend the evening together. I hear they ate at their favorite restaurant, Joe's Crab Shack, and may have done a little Mother's Day shopping. Speaking of Mom's day...we're heading out of town this weekend ... Chris Sligh stopped by for lunch
2007-05-03 07:13:00 Chris & his beautiful wifeLast Friday I was at the boy's school for a few hours. First I read to Bubby 's class and then ate lunch with him. After finishing off a rather tasty slice of school pizza, I read to Tater Tot's class. That's the routine every other Friday and I really look forward to it. It usually goes off without a hitch. However, that was not the case this time. Our normally quiet lunch was interrupted when the cafeteria full of children all started clap non-stop. Garrett and I just looked at each other. We were clueless. Then....then it all made sense. Chris Sligh of Americ*n Id*l fame had stopped by. (yeah, he lives in our town!) It wasn't long until he was surrounded by children. He signed a few autographs, posed for a few pictures, and then chatted with the principal. One of Bubby's classmates proudly announced as we were leaving..."I touched him, I touched him!" Bubby couldn't believe that "a real live famous person" was at his school. P.S. - Here's an a... More About: Lunch , Misc , Chris

Dad's a Coconut Head!
2007-04-26 04:55:00 This evening daddy and Tater were at the kitchen table working on Tater's homework. This is always my job, but tonight I just wanted a break. So, I'm in the office typing away on the keyboard when I hear this conversation.....Tater: "Dad, that's not how I'm supposed to do it!"Dad: "Sure it is."Tater: "Dad, that's just not right."Dad: (re-reading the directions)Tater: "Come on Dad, this is kindergarten work!"I figured I'd better chime in at this point.....Mom: "Tater, do you want me to help?"Tater: "Whew, finally.....mom."He gathered his paper, clipboard and pencils and came into the office. Mad Scientists at Work
2007-04-20 04:54:00 Today Bubby and his friend transformed our screened in porch into their very own laboratory. They would frequently come in and raid the kitchen for supplies....vinegar, baking soda, salt, pans, water, etc. We got Bubby a science experiment kit for his birthday a few weeks ago (maybe not the smartest purchase I've ever made) and they were making good use of it. Can't beat that, right? Having fun and learning at the same time! If only they knew. More About: Work , Scientists

Virginia Tech Tragedy - part 2

Virginia Tech Tragedy
2007-04-17 04:53:00 Today's tragedy at Virginia Tech hit close to home. The campus is close to mine and hubby's home place, southern West Virginia. Even closer, my brother-in-law visits the campus up to three times weekly for work and.......he was there at 7:45 this morning. He saw the police, the SWAT teams, the scared and confused students. He left shortly there after (thank goodness). However, he is more often than not in the engineering building. The very building where so many innocent students perished. He is having a hard time dealing with just how close he was to it all. He said the experience has been extremely sobering. I can only imagine. I told him that we're all extremely thankful that the good Lord was watching over him. After all, we are in no way ready to let him go. My heartfelt sympathy and prayers go out to each family member and friend who have touched by this tragedy. My heartfelt thanks also goes to Lord for not letting more perish. While reading my favorite blogs today, I came ... More About: Tragedy , Prayer

Easter Sunday
2007-04-13 04:26:00 2001Here's a picture of the boys on Easter Sunday . The picture above was taken when Tater Tot was 1 1/2 and Bubby was 4. Darrin told me not to dress Tater in that suit because he'd never forgive me. But, I think he looks adorable. This year, they picked out their suits, shirts and ties. They wanted to match. They even got new Easter shoes. Since we were in NC at the in-law's, I left the Easter bunny a note at our house. Spring Break 2007
2007-04-12 23:59:00 Last week was spring break for our boys. Tater Tot headed to WV for a week of spoiling at Gee and Paw's. Bubby , on the other hand, went to NC to spend some quality time with Nana and Papa. That left hubby and I here all alone. All alone for six days. Yeah!! Oh, umm, I mean boo hoo. Hubby and I had a wonderful time I must say. We had a date night every single night. We ate at Chili's, Miyabi, Brixx, Steak and Ale, and a few other places. I even got to go to Charlotte, NC with him for a meeting and to spend the night. But, that's a whole other post in itself. Although we had some much needed alone time, that lifestyle really would get so boring after a while. We met back up with the boys Saturday evening at Nana and Papa's. We spent the weekend with them. Boy, that NC weather is something. It was in the 30's all weekend. Burr! And, it was even worse in WV. They had snow! Snow for spring break. Tater Tot loved it though. We left for home Monday afternoon. The boys had a hard time ... More About: Holidays , Break , Spring , Shane
Kingdom Heirs Concert
2007-04-12 02:29:00 We recently attended a southern gospel concert by The King dom Heirs. We've seen them numerous times over the past 8+ years. They are at Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge, TN seven months out of the year and tour the rest. We just love them to pieces. They're singing is unparalled in southern gospel music. They bass singer is the lowest we've ever heard. They even add a little humor into each show. And.....I just happened to grow up with their drummer, Dennis Murphy. Of course back then he was known as "Denny." He lived right across the alley from me. We couled hear him practicing on his drums in the metal building behind his house. By the way....he's gotten much better! As always, we purchased several CD's. Give Me The Mountain is our favorite. Especially track number five, The Day Before He Saved Me. The boys are even singing that one. So, if you're going to be in eastern TN in the near future I highly recommend you stop by Dollywood and give then a listen. You will not be... And, spring break is now in full swing and finds hubby and I alone for the week. Tater is in WV with Gee and Paw. Bubby is in NC with Nana and Papa. They're having a ball and actually, so are we. We're all going to meet back up tomorrow though. I've missed those little scutters! I'm working on a few posts to update you further on the goings on of my life during the "break."
