Inspiration from the past
2008-02-07 18:23:00
Those books are sources of inspiration and great bedtime reads as well! I just can't remember when my father acquired them, I must have been real small or not yet born. (Yeah they are that old!) But then they have been nicely kept and not used really often, except the ones on outdoor structure and landscaping. Before the era of technology and the common use of the internet, I guess that's what craft lovers had to help them; those lovely, well-illustrated books.Anyway, I still use those books as a source of inspiration and to look for solutions to certain problems. Most of the contents are still relevant today though the tools suggested in those books are quite outdated.Ah! So much for one of my sources of inspiration dudettes and dudes and my bookish aliens. I've going to bed early today. I'm having a flu and I don't want that to develop into a fever. (I've been out in the rain today but it was fun... hihi)P.S: I've put this thing into good use, huh Jev? :D

2008-02-06 19:23:00
cakes received from a friend today. Excuse the poor quality of the pic.Tomorrow we would be stepping into the year of the rat. Happy Spring festival everyone! :DAccording to some stuff I just read, the year of the rat is supposed to be the year of renewals, of the start of new projects and that of fresh starts in careers. Well this suits me perfectly and I hope the year of the rat goes perfectly for all of you too. Best wishes for the coming year. It's always a great occasion to say happy new year all over again! :PSo long dudettes and dudes and my new aliens.

Descend the Shades of night - Machine Head
2008-02-04 07:33:00
How could another month go by without me talking about the MH, Machine Head . Machine Head is one of my favourite bands, if not my favourite band and I've secretly got a crush on Robb Flynn. So, the song from Machine Head that makes it to my crush of the month is Descend the Shades of Night . This is another song which will make those journalists who think rock songs do not have lyrics wish they did not voice their dumb opinions out loud in a newspaper. (Browse the archives to know what I'm talking about.)Anyway, when I first heard the song,I instantly loved it. The lyric's awesome, the music's awesome, Robb Flynn's voice is awesome. The song is supposed to be about death, as you'll see by reading the lyricsSitting in the empty blackThe last slivers of dusk have passedAccept the dawn to ease the fearOne day I will not be hereDeath she comes and with her threadUpon me ties a mask for deadIts tears of blood begin to seepAnd bleed the skyDescend the shades of nightDeath shines he...
The seven deadly sins
2008-02-02 09:09:00
The seven deadly sins are vices that people should abstain from indulging in or else they would suffer some serious retributions. Those sins are pride, envy, anger, sloth, greed, gluttony and lust; pride being the most severe one. Are you as shocked as me? I mean if we can no longer be proud, what can we be? Duh!Anyway, the retribution in hell for each sin is:Pride - broken on the wheel Envy - put in freezing water Anger - dismembered alive Sloth - thrown in snake pits Greed - put in cauldrons of boiling oil Gluttony - forced to eat rats, toads, and snakes Lust - smothered in fire and brimstoneYeah I know! Eeewwww...Many great persons have expressed themselves on the seven deadly sins but there is one person I want to quote today:The Bible and several other self help or enlightenment books cite the Seven Deadly Sins . They are: pride, greed, lust, envy, wrath, sloth, and gluttony. That pretty much covers everything that we do, that is sinful... or fun for that matter.  Â...
The abolition of slavery
2008-01-31 18:52:00
Tomorrow, the 1st of February, we celebrate the 173rd anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Mauritius. This day means a lot to me; it is a public holiday. Well, on the other hand it's great that we are commemorating the abolition of slavery, a slavery that existed more than 200 years ago. This day could serve as a reminder of the fact that slavery was a reality somewhere in our country. But what about today? 200 years later... Slavery still exists. It exists in the form of dependencies. Those self-induced slaveries of which we cannot get rid. Some are addicted to nicotine, drugs, sex, the internet, their blogs, cleaning, hurting others... forms of addictions are unlimited yet they have one thing in common, they force us to forego a part of us, sometimes essential parts of us. Then one day you realise you have not fulfilled your dreams, you have not taken care of your kids, you have not learnt how to bake a cake... So on this day, tomorrow, at least on this one day, it would be ...

Cyclones do come...
2008-01-29 20:48:00
My life has turned upside down ever since the day blogger started hating me. And now I'm totally pissed and in the fuck you mood and I don't want anyone to ever ask me what happened. I'm thinking of temporarily moving to another host so that I could have an interesting life all over again but I've got a feeling that would not help solve the situation.Ahh, but only time will tell dudettes and dudes and my confused aliens.Anyway, a cyclone is brewing overhead and its name is Gula. I don't know why they named it Gula. It might be some sort of gluttonous (I don't even know if the word exists) cyclone and it's taking its sweet time to manifest itself like any other summer cyclone with some self-esteem. Yeah I know nothing I'm saying is making sense.Anyway I'm not against the prospect of a cyclone. In fact, I'm all for it. For once I'm prepared. You wanna know why?Yeah, that used to be a large burgundy rubber plant (ficus elastica decora 'Burgundy'). It now means V for victor...
Wild Flowers
2008-01-27 21:31:00
While summer rains are the delight of any gardener (I'm not agardener, it just sounds cool to say it that way). So, where was I?Yup, while summer rains are the delight of any gardener, some wildplants benefit from it too. Today I went for a small walk and saw somereally common wild plants in the area. The Argemone mexicana (mexican poppy) is a very attractive wild flowerwhich can be lethal at the same time. Its seeds contain toxicsubstances called alkaloids sanguinarine and dihydrosanguinarine. I'vehad a painful experience with a mexican poppy some years ago. One ofits thorns remained in my finger for 1 whole year!Next comes the lantana, often referred to as theshrub verbena. The lantana comes in different colors from orange, red, pink, yellow to white. This plant is invasive and can easily cover alarge space, especially after heavy rains. Its leaves can beirritating to some people's and children's skins, so some cautionshave to be taken. The lantana is a very popular plant in Mau...

Those things I'd never say
2008-01-26 07:03:00
I've been tagged by Kathleen from Diary of a Heretic and I'm supposed to write seven weird things about me. Coincidence you'd say? This week's theme of the week at MBB is Seven! So let's get going shall we?1. Coffee makes me sleep. It is the best soporific substance I've ever laid my hands on.2. I've got a terrible phobia regarding shirt buttons, I cannot bear people who wear shirts with buttons. I just cannot see that! This becomes worst in rainy days. Imagine shirt buttons wet in the rain. I shudder at the thought.3. I believe I have premonitions. They are not the Phoebe Halliwell or Jess Mastriani kind of premonitions. I dream of stuff which later happen for real. Yeah, you'd say it happens to everybody else. But that's where you'd be wrong! Mine are special. Like I dreamt of a girl being abducted and killed. Her body was found some days later not far from our Goodlands house.4. And I'm already running out of weird things. Though I can't draw, I'm good at painting, e...

Alien flowers
2008-01-24 15:27:00
It's an alien plant for now and it's going to be an alien flower tomorrow. It's more freaky in real than what it looks on the picture. The plant has got a reptile-like appearance and the flower buds look like they could be stars of a sci-fi movie. Sorry I've got no latin name for this plant, actually I've got no name at all for this plant. But I'm searching people! :DThe plant takes about four to six months to reach maturity and then it starts blossoming. Its flower is white and the latter lasts for a day only. It is extremely fragile, as opposed to the plant itself which has tough leaves.I believe this plant is related to the cactus family because of its resistance and preference to the sun and dry land and because of its way of flowering (the flower stems out directly from the leaves.).Anyway, enjoy the crappy pictures dudettes and dudes and my gardening aliens.Update: Some minutes after I wrote this post I realised that I was stupid. So here go, some further information. T...

Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll
2008-01-20 19:08:00
I had a well-documented post planned but then I decided that it does not suit me. Since this blog is about me, I gotta give my opinion on sex, drugs and rock n roll. So here goes...But before I proceed, note to MBB members: it is not because I'm the last one to post that the post is a masterpiece . That said, I can now proceed without fearing the deception that I might cause with this post.So what's sex, drugs and rock n roll for me? For me, it's a cliche, the kind of stuff that some people think is cool but which is not, it's the kind of stuff which has given rock a bad name. I'm referring mostly to the Mauritian context. The first metal concert I've been to was a fiasco, I'm not talking about the musical part. People were drunk, an adolescent was drugged and raped and I fled home with Keli, wondering what the hell happened and most importantly, why? I had been there in the first place because I wanted to see and most importantly hear what those Mauritian metal bands could d...

Wanted: Flowers.
2008-01-16 13:44:00
As the saying goes, " All that I wanted were things I had before", OK, it's not a saying, I'm just quoting Slipknot. But this sentence has some relevance here. All the flowers that I want to have are the ones I had before. The first one on my list is definitely the Alpinia purpurataAn alpinia purpurata bush, taken from here. The alpinia purpurata is a tropical plant and very commonly available in Mauritius. I used to have it for several years until, I don't remember quite well what killed it. It must be noted that this plant takes 3 years to come in bloom for the first time, so I gotta be really patient this time. Then comes the famous roses.photos taken from here.We used to have perfect pink and dark red roses until my mom decided that she did not like them. And when my mum does not like something, she considers it a general consensus without even asking the permission of others. So, we no longer have roses at home. Yeah, you can laugh now.Next on the list comes the Strelitzia Regi...

Weird Google search terms
2008-01-13 14:22:00
I was having a look at my sitemeter counter and checking out from where you guys come from and what search terms you type on Google and other search engines to get here when I thought why not actually answer to you guys' search terms, even the weirdest of them. Let's begin.(This is based on today's search terms. I've picked only the weird ones and not the relevant ones :D )rainy day always remind me of - Now now, I cannot possibly know what a rainy day reminds you of. You will have to dig into your own mind to find out what rainy days remind you of. Or are you an android trying to artificially fill you "mind" with memories and thoughts?! Oh my! This is soo freaky! How did Slipknot make the video Vermillion? - I'm not omniscient but I've got a feeling they hired a video clip making company and an actress/model for the clip. There were some special effects too. But I guess that was kinda easy to figure out. something to talk to a girl about - and the worse part is that it was a M...

The crosswords galore
2008-01-12 09:41:00
Are you a fan of crosswords? No? I am! Crosswords are fascinating and one can get easily engrossed in that. Approximately 99% of newspapers in the world publish crossword grids for their readers to solve. Now now, I have compiled a list of crossword facts which might be interesting to know. The first crossword puzzle ever, appeared in the December 21st 1913 edition of the New York World. It was created by Arthur Wynne whose first attempt, using a diamond shaped grid, was an instant success, and a crossword became soon a regular feature of the New York World and other papers. The first crossword to be published in Britain was also an Arthur Wynne puzzle and it appeared in the Sunday Express in 1924 and was by then in the more common square format.Prize puzzles-also known as pruzzles- became popular in the 1920s. This was a huge source of revenue for newspapers. Profits often lined the pockets of racketeers, but in some cases they went to charity funds, like aiding the blind.George McEl...

Rainy day and Jack the ripper
2008-01-09 18:15:00
Yesterday was a long rainy day and I've started reading the book, Portrait of a killer by Patricia Cornwell. The book is mainly about unraveling the mystery of Jack the ripper and the author believes that Walter Sickert, the English painter, might have been the ripper. In the 19th century, in the year 1888, from August to November, 5 women (also known as the canonical five) were brutally murdered in the White Chapel area in London. The killer was never found by the police and the killer came to be known as Jack the Ripper from the signature on the letters that the alleged murderer used to send to the police, basically to mock their failure at finding out who he is.Anyway, here are pictures of the ripper's victims, as you can see they died in atrocious conditions, most of them having their organs and genitals ripped out and disfigured by their killer.Jack the Ripper gave me horrible nightmares those past nights. I'm never afraid of him or of murder or of horrible corpses when I'm ...
The most promising event in 2008
2008-01-07 20:41:00
Undeniably, it would be my birthday, on the 23rd of February. As usual, I expect it to be an unusual day. Perhaps there would be a cyclone like last year or perhaps I would be fasting for Mahashivaratree or perhaps the weather would be so bad that the day would be declared a public holiday. Yup my birthday has often been like this.I remember in 1999, riots broke because of singer Kaya's death in prison and as from the 22nd children were not allowed to go to school for security reasons. Then, in 2000, the prime minister declared it a public holiday due to heavy rains by making a special announcement on TV on the 22nd, at about 10 pm live from Grand Bassin. He was almost soaked and holding an umbrella. Then, for the later years, I took my own personal leave from school to celebrate the matter at home. And then came last year, 2007. Things went quite well, until the 22nd, the feared date. A cyclone named Gamede started pointing its terrible nose round our tiny island and then on the 23...

Blame it on the PMS
2008-01-06 06:27:00
PMS really exists. I'm saying it to all those skeptics who think it's just an excuse for us women to behave madly. Hell! No it's not an excuse. The proof of this is my previous post. Today when I woke up with all the pain and all and I looked at my blog, I was like "OMG why did I write this?!" And guess the answer is, I was PMSing yesterday. Yeah I really was. I had all the symptoms. So what does PMS stand for to some? Deanne the Arsonist - Atreyu
2008-01-05 17:07:00
Dudettes and dudes, it's time to talk about my crush of the month and it's Deanne the Arsonist by Atreyu . I've fallen in love with this song the first time that I've listened to it. I don't even know how it has landed on my media player but I get a feeling that once again it's got something to do with Jev.So, I was listening to the song, without understanding a damn thing about it, until... I read the lyrics! Yeah I know! Bless those lyrics! So, here they are: GO!!!Coward, the next time you want to fuck me over stab me in the throat(Can I still see my future in your eyes)Or can I picture myself stone dead in your embraceAnd your cruel crimson smile kills me quietlyNo one could have their moments free from your withering touch...Fuck off like you're the only one (who has ever cried or been broken by love)Spare me your pity party drunk off your own misfortunesWallowing in your blissful melancholyCan you taste my blood? You knew that this would kill me but you carried on and on wi...
Birthdays coming up
2008-01-02 14:11:00
Today is my dad's birthday and on the 6th, it's my mum's. Yeah they are both of the same astrological sign and I guess that's what makes them the way they are.Anyway, we went to my grandma's place at Mahebourg and then back home in the afternoon to celebrate my dad's birthday. It was just the four of us, celebrating. There was cake, tea and sodas. A simple little party! It was fun. We reminisced the moment spent at Mahebourg earlier in the day and promised that next time we'll spend more time there! Hehe!Next I wish to share something with you: this year our flamboyant tree has at last been in bloom! Yup those lovely red flowers! We get the pleasure of seeing them only during this period of time in Mauritius. The flowers from my tree is four to eight times the size of a regular flamboyant flower since it's a "modified" tree. :D The flowers look more like orchids and they're ideal for flower arrangements. So I made a quick bouquet for my dad. With only eight flowers I got q...

How I got sick
2007-12-30 22:34:00
It's 1.37 AM and I'm still awake. This is really weird. I mean really really weird cause I'm supposed to have nothing to do and still I can't find sleep. OK, the real thing is, yesterday I slept for 22 hours! Yes it was 22 hours out of 24! It was so damn good. Now I know why some people are addicted to drugs(medicine, legal). LOL! (That was just in case my mum is reading my blog. Oh! and hello family!). I forgot to add, I was sick, yup once again! It all started with a very sore throat, I blame the peanut ice-cream for that. Then my nose went out of control and then the fever came. The most unwelcomed fever in summer you might think?! But no! It made me feel damn cold!So after sleeping for 22 hours at a go, here I am, at 1.46 AM still unable to find some sleep, hearing voices of some unknown children calling me "mom!" from the forest. Yeah I know they do not exist! But really, it's freaky! So long dudettes and dudes and my spooky aliens!P.S: I chose the title after writing this ...

Blogging Resolutions
2007-12-30 09:06:00
On MBB's forum, some days ago, Miranda started a thread on our blogging resolution. Now now! That was an interesting topic. I mean for most of us who take our blogs seriously and who constantly think about what to blog about, it is important to think about the positive changes we wish to bring to our blog for the coming year.So what are my blogging resolutions?- Remain unpretentious. Really, I know I am not pretentious. Though some feel otherwise! - Post everyday! woooh! that's a challenge but I'll try to abide by that! hehe- change the title of my blog (suggestions welcomed)- talk more about movies. Really, what don't I ever talk about movies? huh...- be more honest in my posts! Hihi, in other words, say more what's on my heart! That's gonna be fun

My interpretation of the perfect end of year
2007-12-27 07:22:00
I'm supposed to write my interpretation of the perfect end of year as MBB's end of year theme. At first I thought I'd write about something surreal like complete peace on earth or the total elimination of poverty on our planet. But then these situations would be too perfect nearing impossibility. My perfect end of year would imply everything going on smoothly at home for the end of year festivities. What I mean by that is that I expect the food to be good, the decoration lovely and the people, that is, my family, happy and jovial. Hehe! Yeah I know, that's already asking too much. I know that one thing or the other is bound not to turn out right. But I hope everything works just fine! That's it, this is my interpretation of the perfect end of year. I know it's a short post but I'm actually very busy cleaning up and coming up with a nice menu for the 31st.So I wish you all a very happy new year 2008! God bless! :D

All the same - Sick Puppies
2007-12-21 05:09:00
This month's crush of the month is something sweet, it's the song All the Same by Sick Puppies . This band comes from Australia and has a line-up of 3 namely,Shimon Moore, doing lead vocals and guitarEmma Anzai on bass and doing backing vocalsand Mark Goodwin on drums. Here's the lyrics: I dont mind where you come from As long as you come to me But I dont like illusions I cant see Them clearly I dont care, no I wouldn't dare To fix the twist in you You've shown me eventually what you'll do I dont mind I dont care As long as you're here [Chorus] Go ahead and tell me you'll leave again You'll just come back running Holding your scarred heart in hand It's all the same And I'll take you for who you are If you take me for everything And do it all over again It's all the same Hours slide and days go by Till you decide to come But in-between it always seems too long Suddenly But I have the skill, yeah I have the will, to breath you in while I can However long you stay is ...

A review of my choice.
2007-12-17 18:09:00
This week's theme at MBB is a Review of Your Choice . I hate to say it, cause I've said it so often, but I'm really out of inspiration. At first, I thought I'd review a blog and then I'm afraid that the blog author would not like my review and it would look ridiculous! Finally I'm reviewing a blog and it is a blog I know very well and for once I know the author would not get mad on reading my review just because the author is me!So, the blog is called Godspeed. I don't know why I gave it this title. Probably because of Anberlin's album or the clothing brand. Anyway, I started it somewhere in the beginning of this year. It was meant to be a serious blog. No "hihis" and "dudettes and dudes" but I can't help it, can I? So I've finally gave up on this blog while keeping it on life-support just in case I might want to write serious stuff. The thing is, I don't see my content as being really convincing. My serious opinions are meant to be voiced out loud and not written; that's ...

He has not started posting yet. I'm kinda really proud. I feel like the godmother of his blog. This has made me think that kids grow! Yeah they actually do. I remember when he was born. He was so cute. Haha and I remember when he was a kid! Oh God he was weird! I remember all the moments we spent as kids at our granny's place. You know these moments never come back. wreath-making is breath-taking.
2007-12-08 15:52:00
Yep! I came up with the silly title myself. Something has been going on. Today's my parents wedding anniversary and I went to buy some stuff at Goodlands cause I'm planning a meal and a nice dessert tonight. But before that, during the week-end, I've been making some wreaths to be used as table centerpieces. They're very easy to make, all you need are some dried weeds, tapes, scissors and the leaves of your choice. I've made one with light-colored leaves and my favourite is the Christmas wreath which requires dark-colored leaves and red flowers and ribbons. I've used leaves from our local "christmas tree" to make the christmas wreath. It's important to secure the dried weeds together by using the large tape, so that they do not mess your whole working place. Then give the "weed tube" a round shape. This will be the base of your wreath. Then stick the leaves to the wreath by respecting a pattern and make sure that your glue or tape is not visible on the wreath. Then, when the wre...
