Blog Off Week 2: Hope
2007-07-12 18:19:00
Hope is something that everybody carries with them everyday whether they know it or not. Sometimes a person?s hopes can be buried deep in their minds and they don?t think about it all the time. For example, all parents hope for the absolute best for their children, but their thoughts are not always consumed by just this one very important hope. At any given moment they could be thinking about anything other than their child?s future. They could be contemplating what to have for lunch or even another hope that they have. Perhaps they are consumed with the hope that their elevator doesn?t get stuck in the assent to the 23rd floor (or maybe that is just me and others suffering from elevator phobia). It is at these times that hope is right out in front of them and they cannot think of anything else. I would like to share a rather embarrassing story with you about the second type of hope mentioned. Have you ever been consumed, even for a moment, by hope? Is there something that you so ba...

Where in the World is Mommy the Maid?
2007-07-11 04:46:00
Where in the world is Mommy the Maid ? (blogger is not allowing me to post a title...poopy head)I will give you a few hints...*We are on the way home from visiting relatives in Iowa*There is corn everywhere...and then there is some more corn*Our hotel is way over priced and the swimming pool is about 2 below*We have about 500 miles or more to get home*The entire family is a little cranky and we all just want to go homeI have stored a few story ideas away in my head as well as a notebook so I should have some good reading for you later this week. Unpacking is a scary thought right now, so I think I will concentrate on the fact that I won't have to make this bed I am sitting on tomorrow morning. Yay for happy thoughts.I have missed you all and will be trying to catch up on blogs while in between rounds of procrastinating laundry and procrastinating unpacking all our crap.http://www.text-link-ads.com/xml_blo gger.php?inventory_key=7FK6WL5FBEDW4QBQPZ 4C&feed=1

Blog Off Week 1: SURVIVOR
2007-07-06 03:28:00
The 2nd round of the Blog Off hosted by Courtney is off to a great start. This is the first time I have participated and I think I might get spanked. There are some really fantastic bloggers participating and I encourage everyone to check out the other contenders. The winner gets a nice price in the end, but the best part is that there will be a large amount of money donated to the fight against breast cancer. This week our word is "Survivor ". I thought of many things I could post about. I could write about my mom's best friend who has won her battle with breast cancer. She was a very strong lady and I think about her all the time. I could write about my grandmother who had a serious stroke many years ago and wasn't expected to live. I could write about my friend at Columbine, or my little cousins and their journey through child neglect and abuse. All of those things really depressed me. While it is never good to suppress the not so sunny side of things in life, sometimes it is go...

My dirty little secret
2007-07-02 19:49:00
This month I participated in the Blog Exchange. I remembered to sign up and I remembered to e-mail my partner and I remembered to post. This is an accomplishment. This month's theme was "In My Child's Eyes". I thought about going with something semi-obvious and post about how the world is so bright, new, and innocent in a child's eyes. I wanted to my words to be full of flowers and sunshine. I couldn't bring myself to do it. Not this time. My children's eyes have been seeing something that is not a part of the happy side of motherhood. They saw my dirty little secret. In fact, they may have seen it before I did. Depression. Mommy was suffering from depression. The wonderful Kel of Ordinary Miracles hosted my post for the day. Many of her readers commented how brave I was to post what I did. I thank them for all their support. It was a hard post to write, but I wanted to write it for myself and for other mommas out there that might be going through the same thing. It is not shame...

Nebulizers, Steroids, and Rectal Temperatures Oh My!
2007-07-02 06:35:00
Little Bear is sounding like a seal with a terribly croup cough right now. The doctor told us that it was the first case of it that he has seen since April. I spent most of the day at Urgent Care fighting with her to submit to the nebulizer treatment and gooey medication containing steroids being squirted into her mouth which was clenched shut. It is so hard for us parents to watch our children be poked and prodded. We know that these procedures and tests are necessary, yet our heart wrenches at the first cry of frustration. No one really likes to have their temperature taken rectally. It's not comfortable and if they are taking your temperature that way, more than likely you aren't feeling so well to begin with. The nebulizer, however, is rather harmless. It is not scary. It is not invasive. Yet Little Bear had a complete hatred for it. Not even a cup of milk could calm her down when the blue tube of mist and doom came near her. She was so mad. She was a smart little cookie about...

Making an Impact
2007-07-01 05:47:00
One of the most amazing parts of being a parent has been rediscovering the world through my son's perspective. I love to watch the awe on his face as he discovers something new, even if it's for the fourth or fifth time. He looks at the world and sees everything as a wonder. More than that, though, he sees everything from a perspective of "what can I do with this?" There is absolutely nothing hands off about my son. Everything he encounters he wants to feel, to grab, to move, to taste. Grass first is patted, then is grabbed and tugged on - can I move this? - and, once it has been successfully pried from the earth, it is rubbed between his hands - can I feel this? - and finally put into his mouth - can I eat this? It's an incredible way to look at the world. We take for granted so many of the things around us, ignore them and walk on past, doing what we feel is most important at that moment. Not my son. When going from point A to point B, he has to stop every step along the way. Fl...

AppetizerHow many pieces of jewelry do you wear most days?Usually just my ring. Once upon a time I had a ton of piercings and if I counted each piece, My number would be over 20 pieces. These days it is just the ring and occasionally a pair of earrings, a bracelet, and maybe a necklace.SoupWhat is your favorite instrumental song?Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies. It brings back a lot of great memories.SaladWho has a last name that you like?I've never really thought about it, but I have seen a lot of last names I would hate to have. Thursday Thirteen Mad Cleaning List
2007-06-28 17:03:00
I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow. I will be poked and prodded everywhere. I will have my regular physical and then my well woman exam. The girly part may seem easy and harmless, but I have issues that keep it from being those things. I am not excited about it, although I should be since they might be able to help get pregnant.Anyway, Hubby's Step mom is going come over and watch Little Bear for me while I submit to the poking and prodding and excruciating paper work. (It's a new Doc) With her impending visit, I need to get my house clean. Not that she really cares about the house, but I do. So here is a list of things I need to do.Thirteen Things I need to do before MIL visit1. Clean the guest bathroom. I got the main one yesterday but a mop handle to the eye stopped me from moving on.2. Sweep and Mop the floors, this is an almost everyday thing anyway3. Laundry. My laundry is about to explode out of the hamper like a cartoon.4. Clean up the office. It looks like a bomb ins...

A Short Story from Mommy the Maid and Gap
2007-06-28 16:40:00
Most women who have insecurities about their body are self conscious about their butt, thighs, and tummy. Sometimes these insecurities will keep them from wearing certain types of garments. Short s and short skirts are usually the first items to be taken of the "wearable" list.I do not wear shorts. I know I have said it before, but I just don't do shorts. I am insecure about my thighs which seem to have expanded through the years and nylons now scare me as a fire hazard. But my thighs isn't really the reason that I have abandoned shorts all together. It is my knee.Yes, you read that right. My knee.About 5 years ago I was the pedestrian in a vehicle versus pedestrian hit and run. Long story short, the drunken idiot in a stolen Chevy Avalanche with temp tags got away. My knee and foot took a lot of the multiple injuries that I suffered and I had a small surgery on my knee. My knee looks normal to most people unless they really look close, but to me it is totally deformed. Let's call...

I am so cool, and now I have proof
2007-06-27 17:01:00
As I sat at my computer this morning trying to rub the sleep out of my eyes, I decided to surf around the net and try to come up with something to post about so that I could give my Bingo Players something to read today. I checked my comments and Leslie from My Mommy's Place said that she had something for me on her blog. I love presents. I read her blog everyday so I just went right over there to check it out. I was expecting to find a fun picture, more information on the summer "crackstash" fashion, or maybe even a video of a cool song that the kids think makes me old. I am one of those people that try to guess every single present under the tree at Christmas. Can you tell? Instead I found one of the coolest gifts that can be given to a blogger. I was awarded with this beauty right here:That's right! One of the coolest bloggers I know has chosen me for her Rockin' Girl Blogger Air Band. I get to play the bass :D It is such an honor to have it proudly displayed in my side bar. I...

Softball Moms and Dads. Is it encouragment or pushing?
2007-06-25 17:10:00
This is a subject that I have gone back and forth with myslef about for a while. I wasn't sure if I really wanted to post about it seeing as it is a controversial subject (at least in my world it is) and with all the trolls coming over to play lately, I wasn't quite sure I wanted to deal with it. After the softball tournament this weekend, I have decided that it is something I want to discuss. People may agree and others with disagree, but I feel so strongly about this, that I want to get it out there."Softball Dads" really piss me off. There, I have said it. They piss me off and make me wonder why they had children in the first place. Did they really want to have children or did they just want to raise an athlete to follow in their first steps? Or did they want to use their children to finish off uncompleted dreams of their own?I want to say right now that not all parents of children involved in sports are like this. But the few who are really ruin it for the rest of us.E...

Softball: Where the Cheer is just as important as the win
2007-06-23 22:51:00
Miss Turtle played in her first tournament today. It was day 2 of long games in the hot sun. She was assigned the place of catcher and took it very seriously. Even in the 98 degree weather, she wore all that gear and busted her buns to get those home runners out. She played amazing both today and yesterday and had a really great time doing it.I fully agree with cheering on your team. I think it is great for a team to work together and support each other in all their efforts. However, the cheers have changed from when I was 8 years old. While I was in the muggy dugout helping Miss Turtle to change in and out of all that gear while spraying her with a squirt bottle and shoving a bottle of water down her throat, I heard the chants. It's almost like a military cadence with a leader saying the words and the other girls follow.Down by the river!Took a little walk!Meet up with you team!Had a little talk!Pushed you in the River!Hung you out to dry!We can beat your team!Any old time!Such ha...

The heat makes everyone quote Austin Powers movies right?
2007-06-21 21:43:00
Why is it that I always seem to pick the row of carts at the store that everyone wants to get a cart from?At Walmart today there were 5 rows of carts in the entrance. There was a woman standing in front of the first row, so I moved to the second row to grab a cart from there. You have to remember that when you have children, grabbing a cart is a bit more complicated than most people think. I check to see if the safety strap works, set Athena in the cart, buckle her in, put down my purse, and then go about my shopping needs. During this time, the woman in front of the first row of carts had left leaving 4 open rows of carts. Each row containing a very large number of carts. The carts are not in short supply, and there is plenty of room for at least four other customers to get a cart.In walks another woman who needs a cart."Excuse Me"I turn and look at her."I need to get a cart.""There are four other rows of carts, but we are almost done here""Well, you are really in everyone's way"(...

There must be a "Trolls Welcome" sign on my blog
2007-06-18 20:03:00
I got a wonderful comment yesterday. Can you sense the sarcasm there? Some idiot came in through the Blog Explosion Battle of the Blogs and told me that if I changed my profile picture they would vote for me. WTH?They must think very highly of themselves to think that I would take down my profile picture just for their sorry ass vote in a game. And of course, no name or site was left. I am guessing this might be for the better seeing as how their grasp on English was a little loose and I can't read or speak anything but English anyway.I got to figure out how to make it where people can't leave anonymous comments. I think it's a giant flashing neon sign saying "Please come into my comments and say something really stupid!"http://www.text-link-ads.com/xml_ blogger.php?inventory_key=7FK6WL5FBEDW4QB QPZ4C&feed=1

I am the nosey neighbor
2007-06-16 21:12:00
Yesterday I was in my kitchen cooking dinner and heard the neighborhood kids playing around outside. There is one little boy in particular that has quite the potty mouth on him for only being about 9 years old. When I heard him yell "Dammit you stupid pansy ass, just go get the f***ing ball a**hole" I turned to look and opened my mouth to yell out the window at him. All that came out of my mouth was laughter. This kid was wearing the waist band of his pants below his butt cheeks. On purpose. His gray underwear was in full view as his white shirt hung only down to his waist. The front of his baggy pants was thankfully pulled up a little bit higher. I watched for a while in curiosity. Maybe his pants had just fell down while they were playing 500 (a football game). I watched a little while longer and noticed that his pants were repeatedly being tugged back to the below the buttocks position. We was purposely wearing his pants like this.So what did I do?I tried to get a picture of it. ...

When you wish upon a chicken bone
2007-06-14 20:44:00
I have few fond memories of my family life as a child. One of those memories is the wish bone from the chicken or turkey. Whenever my mom would cook a whole chicken or a turkey she would always save the wish bone for her and I to pull apart. When the bone was dry, I would grasp one side of the bone and my mom would grab the other. We would both make a wish and then tug the bone in half. The person standing with the top of the wishbone on their side after the break was to be granted their wish.Yes, I know it is silly. But no more silly than wishing on stars or birthday candles. This wish catalyst just happens to have come out of a chicken rather than the sky or a party. No matter how silly it is, to this day I still make a wish on the chicken bone.About a year and half ago or so, Hubby and I were at my mom's for dinner and she had already had the two wishbones dry and ready for wishing by the time we were ready to leave. My mom and Miss Turtle shared the first one and Miss Turtle wa...

CarnivalsI have been getting back into the blog carnival spirit and have joined up with a few this week. The Carnival of Family Life has always been near and dear to me and this week I submitted those great kid recipes that I found earlier this week. I also submitted my recipe for Southwest Pork Kebabs for the Carnival of the Recipes. This week is a grilling edition and everything sounds really yummy. Contes ts The Wooden Porch is giving away a prize that I am drooling over. A $25 gift card to Joanns. It can be used in store or online. All you have to do is take a visit over there and leave a comment to get one entry into the contest. Or, if you are hard core and really want this prize, you can post about it in your blog and get 5 entries. I have my fingers so tightly crossed, I might not be able to sew or bead until the contests ends on June 18th.Bingo !I had a crazy thought the other day. In a blatant attempt to attract more readers to my blog, I thought maybe a game of Bingo would g...

More Dancing from Little Bear

This time she is dancing to one of Hubby's favorite songs. That's right, White and Nerdy by Weird Al Yankovich is one of Hubby's favorite songs. We both know all the words, and yes...we are dorks. :DLitt le Bear came into the office after her nap and asked me for music. I turned it on for her because she gets so excited over this song. Really cool Toy!
2007-06-08 23:08:00
I am going to blog about a really cool toy, and it's not made by Melissa and Doug or Fisher Price. It's a toy for adults and I really want one.The meade my sky is a hand held Star Trek looking device that you point at stars, planets and other celestial objects in the night sky and it will identify it for you. It can identify over 30,000 objects. How cool is that? I can't explain it very well as my limited vocabulary includes the technical terms "thingie" and "doo dad", so here is a quick excerpt from their website:Meade mySKY is a fun, interactive, multi-media, hand-held guide to the universe that locates and identifies celestial objects in the night sky. Meade my Sky Featuring a full-color LCD screen and the added ability to control a Meade telescope, Meade mySky Personal Sky Navigator 04540 is clearly unlike anything else on the market. No More Board Games
2007-06-08 22:59:00
Little Bear has discovered the joy of board games. I love to watch her and Miss Turtle play their own versions of Ant Farm, Cootie Bug, and Don't Break the Ice. I love to let Little Bear sit on my lap while the family plays Monopoly Jr or Shrek Operation. For the most part, board games are loved in this family. We just don't love where we store them. I like to keep them so that Miss Turtle is able to get them when she wants to play. Unfortunately, that is no longer out of reach for the red headed and curious. That mess took a mere 30 seconds to make, but an entire 30 minutes to clean up. We need to figure out a way to put a lock on the closet so that Little Bear can't do that anymore.http://www.text-link-ads.com/xml_ blogger.php?inventory_key=7FK6WL5FBEDW4QB QPZ4C&feed=1
