2008-03-23 07:30:00 Breast cancer risk for binge drinkers By OUR LONDON CORRESPONDENT London: Middle-aged women who regularly drink large glasses of wine are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer, according to a warning by the Labour government. The health ministry has issued a warning to women in middle age who drink more than government guideline levels that they are 50 per cent more likely to develop breast cancer. The £10-million advertising campaign will feature stark warnings to women, who drink alcohol to excess, about the damage they are doing to their health. The department of health has warned that women use large glasses to drink wine or alcohol and thus underestimate how much alcohol they have actually consumed. Stronger wine, varying from 9 per cent to 13 per cent, and larger glasses, varying from 125 ml to 250 ml, have led to confusion over how many units drinkers consume. 2008-03-20 13:11:00 Giving all local children access to independent schools' sports facilities could target the UK's obesity crisis, a thinktank claims today.The New Local Government Network (NLGN), says the government should force independent schools who receive charity status to share their gyms, sports pitches and swimming pools with local sports clubs for at least ten hours per week. Last year the Foresight report warned that if current levels continue then a quarter of children will be obese by 2050.The report recommended society-wide solutions to reduce the nation's waistlines. Today's study from the NLGN says one of these solutions lies within the private schools sector.It claims research shows access to sports facilities increases fitness activity by 50 per cent.Other proposals to target obesity include extending the ban on selling vending machine junk food in schools to include all public buildings. Pet obesity is Europe's biggest animal health issue
2008-03-14 12:14:00 Two-thirds of veterinary professionals believe that pet obesity is the single biggest health issue facing domestic animals throughout Europe, with 96 per cent of those questioned identifying early death as the most serious consequence of the condition. These are just some of the shocking results from research carried out by pet food manufacturer, Hill's Pet Nutrition, which also revealed that the problem mirrored the spiralling human obesity epidemic. Indeed, 78 per cent of those questioned thought that obese pets tended to have obese owners with 80 per cent of vets reluctant to mention the condition to overweight owners for fear of offending them. Nearly 50 per cent of pets are obese or overweight and central to solving the problem of pet obesity is encouraging owners to accept that a pet has an ideal weight and to commit to a weight reduction programme. Some feel that if a mother is overweight during pregnancy, the high sugar and fat levels in her body might permanently affect her baby's appetite control and metabolism. But a new study finds there is no strong connection to prove this theory. First, researchers from University of Britol in the United Kingdom looked at whether offspring fat mass is more strongly related to maternal BMI or paternal BMI. They looked at the parents' BMI of about 4,000 children and the children's fat mass at ages nine to 11 years old. They found both the mother's and father's BMI were associated with the child's weight. While the mother's BMI was a stronger predictor than the father's, it was not strong enough to explain the obesity epidemic.
