2008-04-09 09:25:00
Face - bovvered? The majority of people who use sunbeds have an increased risk of developing lung cancer, TheSpoof.com can exclusively reveal.A straw poll, taken outside Tanyaz Tanz in Wigan, Lancashire, showed a whopping 100% of all people who visited the salon put out a cigarette before stepping inside. This news comes quick on the heels of a recent report showing exposure to UV rays from sunbeds can lead to the development of skin cancer. Something which everybody was already pretty much well aware of."Well, I can't afford to go on 'oliday too often," explained Sharon Rycroft, a salon regular, whilst smoking a cigarette. "I like to buy myself a magazine every day, head off to the salon for an hour, have a few fags and a chat, then head down the DSS for my money and go home to watch my Sky HD. Cancer danger among young using sunbeds
2008-04-09 09:25:00
By Rebecca Smith Sunbed users are increasing their risk of developing a life-threatening form of skin cancer by three-quarters, experts have warned. A report has established that using sunbeds from an early age increases the risk of malignant melanoma by 75 per cent. It was released by Cancer Research UK as part of the SunSmart campaign, which will focus this year on the dangers of sunbeds. It comes after the British Association of Dermatologists called for under-18s to be banned from using tanning beds and for tighter controls on unmanned and coin operated booths. Skin cancer is the fastest rising cancer in Britain, with cases increasing by almost half in the last decade. Almost 9,000 cases of malignant melanoma are diagnosed in the UK annually and more than 1,800 die from the disease each year. The SunSmart campaigners warn that over-exposure to UV rays in the tanning salon can prove as dangerous as getting burnt on the beach. It is a common misconception that sunbeds have had ...

Green tea inhibits breast cancer in mice
2008-04-09 09:25:00
SAN DIEGO, April 8 (UPI) -- A green tea anti-oxidant that helps stop cell damage and aging may inhibit breast cancer, U.S. researchers suggest. University of Mississippi Medical Center researchers find the green tea anti-oxidant epigallocatechin-3- gallate, known as EGCG, significantly inhibits breast tumor growth in female mice. Senior researcher, Dr. Jian-Wei Gu suggests EGCG reduces breast cancer by targeting both tumor blood vessel formation through the lowering of vascular endothelial growth factor and tumor cell nutrients that promote growth and proliferation, or angiogenesis. "In this study we have demonstrated that the frequent ingestion of EGCG significantly inhibits breast tumor growth, vascular endothelial growth factor expression and tumor angiogenesis in mice," Gu says in a statement. Seven-week old female mice injected with breast cancer cells and given EGCG in their drinking water showed significant decreases in tumor cross section area, tumor weight and va...

CHILDHOOD OBESITY STUDY HELPS YOUNGSTERS
2008-04-06 15:02:00
Children at an Exeter school are feeling happier and healthier after researchers working on a project to tackle childhood obesity helped them change the way they live.Instead of watching TV or playing video games and snacking on fizzy drinks or sweets, pupils at Whipton Barton now join in sports and eat fruit. The success of the project, by a team from the Peninsula Medical School, means it might be copied in hundreds of other schools across the UK.Researchers have spent two years working in schools in the city to develop resources for teachers to help convince children to be healthier. Children at Whipton Barton took part in rugby sessions with the Exeter Chiefs and drama and dancing sessions to help them understand the benefits of eating properly. Jenny Lloyd, in charge of the project, ran events for mums and dads to explain what the children were being taught. "We hope to get funding from the Government and the British Heart Foundation to go into more Exeter and Plymouth sc...

Nepalese angry with Tibetans' actions in Nepal
2008-04-05 14:26:00
Nepalese organizations working to strengthen the Nepal-China relationship expressed dissatisfaction about some Tibetan separatists using Nepali soil to carry out anti-China demonstrations. Chairman of the China Study Center Madan Regmi expressed objection over some Tibetan refugees using Nepali soil to carry out anti-China protests in recent days. "Most of those involved in demonstrations outside Chinese Embassy are violating refugee convention," Regmi said to Xinhua Friday, adding that they have to abide by the law and policy of the country in which they are residing. The activities of the Dalai Lama clique in Nepal undoubtedly disrespect the foreign policy of Nepal, Regmi said. He also criticized a section of the Western media working in Nepal for spreading misleading information regarding the separatist movement in the international arena just before the Beijing Olympics. "It's ridiculous that some of the Western media used the photographs of Nepali police t...

Dads' Early-Onset Obesity Linked to Liver Disease in Kids
2008-04-04 17:49:00
THURSDAY, April 3 (HealthDay News ) -- People whose fathers had early-onset obesity are at increased risk for elevated liver enzyme levels and liver disease, says a U.S. study.Researchers evaluated 1,732 children, average age 42, of participants in the Framingham Heart Study, a long-term study of families in Framingham, Mass. The researchers found that people whose fathers were clinically obese at an early age were more likely to have increased liver enzyme (serum alanine aminotransferase -- ALT) levels, an indicator of liver disease. When the researchers conducted a secondary analysis that didn't include obese offspring, they still found a strong link between elevated serum ALT levels and paternal early-onset obesity. This demonstrates that the link between obesity in the father and elevated serum ALT levels in children is independent of the offspring's body-mass index (BMI) and persists among non-obese children, the researchers said. No relationship was found between earl...

Pregnant mums' fatty diet linked to baby's obesity
2008-04-04 17:49:00
WASHINGTON: Mothers who eat foods rich in trans fats while pregnant or breastfeeding are more likely to give birth to fatter babies, according to a new study. The study on mice, led by Brazilian nutritionist Luciana Pisani, found that pregnant and lactating rats when given a diet of hydrogenated fat during pregnancy and lactation delivered babies who were fatter in comparison to rats fed a normal diet. It was found that an unhealthy diet led to damaging consequences even after the fats were removed from the diet and had links to insulin production. "We know that foetal growth is influenced by the mother's nutritional status. The nutritional conditions during pregnancy has a major role in the metabolic and hormonal interactions between the mother's body, placenta and foetus," said Pisani. "To date only a few studies have looked at the effects on trans fatty acids during pregnancy and lactation on the metabolism of offspring in adulthood. We found that the fat...

Kids? stuff: Sleeping and caring help prevent obesity
2008-04-04 17:49:00
To parents who have been seeking some slam dunk response to two questions that their offspring aged 5 to 8 seem particularly fond of whining incessantly ? "Why do I have to go to bed so early?" and "Why can't I have a TV in my room?" ? science can now offer a reply that might just stop the little treasures in their tracks: "Because if I let you have your way, you will be a big fat obese tub by the time you hit the sixth grade." More sleep leads to less weightAccording to a study by the University of Michigan published in Pediatrics, every extra hour of sleep per night that a third-grader gets lowers his or her chances of being obese by grade six by 40 percent. The crucial amount of slumber time seems to be nine hours and 45 minutes; anything more than that cuts the obesity risk significantly, whereas anything less increases the likelihood of obesity regardless of the child's third-grade weight. The exact reason is still unclear ? some observers note that sleep shortage is know...
