HAPPY NEW YEAR!
2007-12-31 10:57:00
It’s New Year ’s Eve and yet, I’m still 1600 miles away from home. If my math isn’t that bad, I’ll reach home at about 7pm, which works out to be 12 hours before I’ll be walking around in the school ground again. And then there’s unpacking, dinner, unpacking, bath, unpacking, packing for school before sleep ...

Don?t Stop Reading, Please
2007-12-30 11:07:00
This is really old but I finally remembered to write an entry about this, and for once, actually do it. My blog’s quality is going doooooown. Most people now probably visit it to play with the banner. Because unfortunate changes are taking place. First, [possibly] private information is given out, somehow. So… um, Nicholas? Still Alive
2007-12-25 12:51:00
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!! (Sorry! No Christmas-themed blog layout along with Chipmunks’ Christmas songs this year because I’ve got no time overseas and I don’t have the layout source files anyway!) This is a sign for all those wonderful people who are still regularly checking here for activity that I’m still alive! So thank you, wonderful person. This does not apply if you’re a smartass geek who uses RSS feeds. This entry is brought to you and made possible by unsecured WiFi networks. Making the world a better place since non-geeks started buying routers. I realise that having a computer without an internet connection is utterly pointless, something I’d rather die if I had to live my entire life like this. It’s like buying a car, only to push it around instead of driving it. Utterly pointless. Unfortunately enough, that has been my life since 12th of December and isn’t ending until 1st of January 2008 (yes! freakin’ ...

Just almost immediately after I’m back from Chiang Mai, spending all my time uploading photos and blogging, I’m being sent off again like a parcel. In continuation from last year, it isn’t so hard to guess where I’m headed. Link here. From 12th December to 1st January, see ya guys! Enjoy Geminids and what little we have ...
All About IOAA
2007-12-09 14:59:00
Blogging about 10 days would be an impossibly boring feat. But blogging about 10 incredible days would be more difficult than chewing my fingers off. IOAA 2007 was just fantastic. Because it’s more than just a competition. Alternative names for it can be anything from “The Great Polluting Journey of Kia Boon’s Squeaky Clean Mind”, or ...

It’s 1.10am, my flight’s at 5.30am, and I gotta leave my house at 4.15am. Which means I have to wake up at 3.30am, and if I rush, I’ll get to sleep at 1.30am, giving me 2 hours of sleep… GRAH. Or I could think… An astronomer doesn’t need sleep.  Or much sleep, at least. I’m flying off ...

You?ve got to be so kidding me
2007-11-20 20:15:00
I didn’t capture this, but I came across this online (as always). I’m the verge of believing that pigs can fly and hell has frozen over when I saw this. “Spotted a couple of weeks back at the underground carpark of a local hotel near the Balestier area, the interior is decked to the brim with anything ...

Internet Explorer crashes. Oh yes, and stop using IE!
2007-11-19 12:35:00
Yesterday, for once, I decided to open my website in Internet Explorer . Being a Firefox user, and since Firefox and Internet Explorer don’t render pages the same way, occasionally I added a code in my site’s HTML that appears to work in Firefox, but completely messes up in IE. Ah, this error appeared. And, of course, this ...

Science Team Camp 2007
2007-11-18 19:34:00
This came late, but oh well. 14th to 16th November was BP Science Team Camp . I won’t blog much about it, though. I don’t feel like giving another long entry. But basically, ST camp was pretty much heading for disaster after the teachers decided, against the sec 3 organisers’ will, to have it as a rather lame ...

Portal’s Still Alive
2007-11-12 18:37:00
Wei Rong posted this ages ago but finally I can host the illegal song here. Really, it’s really legal. I don’t think they copyrighted that song for the game. … … … Hah! You will have to Login or Register to read the hidden content that is behind this! Ellen McLain (GLaDOS) - Still Alive This was a triumph. I’m making a note here: huge success. It’s hard to overstate my satisfaction. Aperture science. We do what we must because we can. For the good of all of us Except the ones who are dead. (Chorus 1) But there’s no use crying over every mistake You just keep on trying till you run out of cake And the science gets done and you make a neat gun For the people who are still alive. I’m not even angry. I’m being so sincere right now. Even though you broke my heart and killed me. And tore me to pieces. And threw every piece into a fire. And as they burned it hurt because I was so happy for you. (Chorus 2) Now these points of da...

New Web Host
2007-11-12 18:12:00
After nearly a year with my old Singapore web host, I have decided to move on with a Malaysian one. The propagation from my old host to the new host took place today, was rather smooth actually. And it was really easy and automatic, I should add. Apparently, my new host offers 4 months of FREE hosting if I were to transfer my website to them while it is still under contract. My contract is left with less than 2 weeks, what better time is it to move now and gain the 4 months bonus :D Now, I have 10GB of storage, but I won’t say how much bandwidth in case you people have the smart idea of attempting to crash my server (yes, I’m looking at you, Shaun Ng). I don’t think I blogged about this before but there was this IP address, a Singapore one, which kept crawling my server. Not sure if it’s a bot or what, but it took down a massive 20GB+ of bandwidth after a week or two. Inhuman, you might call it. That’s 4 times my allocated bandwidth of my previous host...

Random stuffs as follows. Apparently, being the first to blog about class chalet gives people ideas and a role model to follow. My genius classmates have decided to follow my lead and decided to give vague lame entries about the class chalet because ‘more info can be found on other classmates’ blogs’. In other news, I’m trying to do as little as possible to save BPST camp. I mean, really… oh nevermind. Let’s just hope it turns out great as always. My eyes have seen the glory of the burning of the sc- I spent the entire of today, nearly 12 hours, doing research on web hosts. I registered this domain with my current one about a year ago, a day before my birthday I believe, and they’ve been bugging me to pay up to extend my contract with them. But $60/year… 200MB?! That’s pretty reasonable for a Singapore local server, so I went ahead with them last year. After an entire day of researching, too. This year, the slightly smarter me ...
Portal
2007-11-11 14:11:00
Now I know I may get flamed for being WOLS or something, but I finally started on Portal yesterday night. And completed, of course. Because Portal’s gameplay is a miserable 3 hours or so. Probably less if you don’t try stupid stunts like me. I don’t really know what to say. It’s a pretty awesome game. Very, very, very good, innovative, and… what I like most about it? GLaDOS is funny :D James showed me this cheap trick to defeat GLaDOS and I’m extremely impressed with this guy’s skillz.   The cake is a lie. The cake is a lie. The cake is a lie. The cake is a lie. The cake is a lie. The cake is a lie. And I miss my Weighted Companion Cube :( Incinerating it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Class Chalet
2007-11-09 10:14:00
My online absence has always been known to be impossible without any valid reason; And hell, it is. So for those of you who found it amazingly weird how Derek disappeared from the surface of the Earth over the past 2/3 days, this phenomena shall be explained. CLASS CHALET. But don’t worry. I won’t blog about it… that much. Because, 1) You can read all about it, in an uninteresting, informal and typical Singaporean blogger tone on my, uhm, otherclassmates’blogs. Oops. 2) Every chalet is probably the about same. It’s… well, fun, tiring, fun… er- tiring. Fun. Tiring. Fun. You get the idea. My class chalet was typically, like this: Check into bungalow, beach, throw people into water, volleyball, throw water into people (???), eat, Risk (board game), mahjong, movies, PS2, Time Crisis, Pro Evolution Soccer, Fatal Frame (in place of horror movies cos we didn’t bring any), ‘Tai Ti’, sleep, order McDonald’s and Pizza Hut de...

Bioshock & Recurrences
2007-11-06 13:52:00
…what can I say? More Iron than Iron Man. BIOSHOCK IS AWESOME. Kinda. Okay so when my brother was away at NUS yesterday, I gamed the entire day and night away. Started on Bioshock at 2pm, and completed at 2am. 12 hours gameplay! Quite fortunate I didn’t visit my blog to have Wei Rong spoil it all for me. It’s a pretty innovative, weird game. A good balance of gore, scares, fun, and story. No surprises it’s speculated to win Game of the Year. I won’t disagree with Wei Rong that it got boring sometime into the game, and all you desire is to complete the damn game to uncover the story. BUT SERIOUSLY, doesn’t that apply to every single player game with more than 10 hours of gameplay? There’s a certain time, the sweet spot, around 6-8 hours into the game, when you’re so used to it that the novelty wears off. You don’t enjoy it as much, and you’re simply doing the same stuffs (shooting and killing over and over again). All tha...

BIODUMBSHITSHOCK
2007-11-04 13:56:00
I’m here to rant. If you’re uninterested… good for you. It’s about Bioshock. Yes, that Game of the Year for 2007. Rated 95+++/100 by just about every single gaming critic. Easily beats blockbuster Halo 3, swallows World in Conflict and makes Portal a lie. And it’s one helluva screwed up game. … Look, it all started about 24 hours ago. I completed Halo 2, was like WEEE~HA! and went on to open Bioshock. Problem #1: The process bioshock.exe launches. Visible in Task Manager. But there’s nothing at all! As in, it launches, you can see it chewing away your resources in Task Manager, but nothing appears. The system doesn’t even appear to be loading anything. So I went to google. After a while, someone somewhere said it had to do with Bioshock’s copyright protection, Securom, which everyone should know, isn’t really doing it’s job because I’m playing, eh, unoriginal Bioshock. And what’s better, there’s no...

Halo & Video Games
2007-11-02 18:28:00
Seems like I finally managed to play Halo 2 Vista after all.   Master Chief. He’s hard. Interpret this however you want. This probably won’t help any of you but guess what? ATI Tray Tools was causing the crashing problems, and I simply got another overclocking software and I was good to go. Now I’m 4/5 way through; I’ll finish it up tomorrow. This game is so old, if I continue to talk about it, I won’t be surprised if my next game is O2 Jam. Oops. This mundane rubbish uninteresting content I’ve mentioned above, fortunately, isn’t what this blog entry will be about. … So, like, as you read, I AM playing Halo 2 Vista. Like whoa. And I realised something. Yes it’s freaking HALO, played but millions of gamers across the planet, but I’ll risk being called a wuss and admit that the freaking aliens scare me. A little. Somewhat. No Sex, Please, We’re Singaporean
2007-10-30 13:57:00
This apparently is one of the more popular news internationally, so why not share it here? … Sex Not Allowed in Airbus A380 Double Bed SuitesĀ  Even though Singapore Airlines has equipped its new A380 jets with private double bed suites, company officials are saying you’d better not do the bouncy bouncy in there or you’ll meet with their stern disapproval. What are they going to do? Throw you off the plane? The first couple to book one of the double suites wasn’t too impressed with the airline’s prudish demeanor. “So they’ll sell you a double bed, and give you privacy and endless champagne — and then say you can’t do what comes naturally?” asked Tony Elwood, a 76-year-old passenger who booked the suite with his wife, Julie. “Seems a bit strange.” Let’s not forget that Singapore Airlines is based in a country which still deems it okay to smack people with a rattan cane for even the slightest transgression,...
