Oh Baby!
2007-06-16 18:51:00
I went to the doctor yesterday so they could tell me I'm pregnant.   I already knew that, in fact, I'd already seen it's little heart beat on an ultrasound (it was like a bean with a flashing part), but if my Primary Doctor didn't recognize the pregnancy my insurance would not cover OB visits.  So.  That's why I went.  I know I haven't mentioned anything about it on here and that was because... well because I didn't feel like it.  And now I do.  So I'll start from the beginning.Aprilweek one.  I inadvertently get pregnant.week two. Andy leaves.week three.  I feel weird and very tired.  Sleep for 12-hours a night and still tired.  Think I have mono.week four.  I expect my period.  It never comes.Mayweek one. I purchase HPTs and try to wait to end of the week to take one.  Watched premier of  Notes From The Under Belly (which is about pregnancy).  Can't sit still to save my life.  Decide to t...

Everybody's Workin' For The Weekend
2007-06-11 21:06:00
Sorry for the recent lack of new posts...  I've had another attack of the "OMG-WHO'S-READING-THIS?!?!" disease  (I know, I know - find a new hobby).  So, for whoever IS reading this... here's a recap of what I've been up to.As it turned out, the day after the last time I posted WAS a better day.  My car was fixed, the sun was shining blah, blah, blah - and then came the weekend... Last Friday Andy was supposed to come home early - like 8:00 AM.  So I got dressed and waited.  By 3:00, I figured he probably wasn't coming home early after all.  As it happened he did get off work early, but then had to go do line-handling (where they tie fancy knots in the ropes that secure ships) at some ship-festival.  So anyway to do any cool knot-work line-handlers had to be in their dress-whites... as I'm told Andy and his shipmates were.  While they waited for their ships to come in (literally) they boys decided they would get some food.  At ...

Tomorrow Will Be A Better Day

Oh man. I had such a horrible day. Andy did too.  Too bad I already named April 11 'Crap Day' because that would also be a fitting name for June 5.  Crap. Crap. Crap.My horrible day involved being knocked out of first place on the arcade scoreboard on one of my message boards (after much toiling I am, again, tied for first - but still) and vomiting for 3 hours straight.  I seriously thought I was going to die.  The non-stop puking was accompanied by shaking and hot/cold flashes.  There is an upside to being violently ill.  It feels GREAT when it stops.Andy's involved being forced to stay late at work and then the car not starting.  What's wrong with it you ask?  The exact same thing that was wrong with it before I got it 'fixed' while Andy was underway.  Anyway, he looked under the hood where he discovered not only no new parts... but that the mechanic had left a screw-driver behind.  There's really no upside to either of th...

It's the cheesiest!
2007-06-05 00:28:00
Last night I couldn't sleep.  I wanted macaroni-and-cheese - lots of it.  Not just any macaroni/cheese combo would do (I've been known to make my own cheese sauces every now and again and put them over pasta) I wanted the Kraft kind from the blue box with the salty powdered cheese-like stuff.    Anyway I wanted it so much that I got out of bed in the middle of the night (around 11:00 - since we get-up at 3:30, 11:00 really IS the middle of the night for us), went out to the living room and thought about going out to get some.As you may remember, I do not know where people in my neighborhood shop for groceries.  There's the Food Lion, but it's far away - and I don't know how late they stay open, so I thought my best bet would have been the 24-hour Wal*Mart (where you can get anything at any time.  Tires?  Been dip?  Socks?   No matter the hour,  it's no problem at Wal*Mart!  Because Wal*Mart is owned and operated ...

Andy got in trouble for having missed Liberty Call yesterday.  He and one other sailor (who also missed it) were sentenced to polishing the ship's Christening Bell.  Although, since there were two of them, each really only had to polish half the bell...  and Andy did say it actually looked a lot better when they were done.  I still feel bad.Last night we'd planned on going to the Ocean Front to see a certain washed-up 80's band perform (not that either of us were particularly interested in seeing said band, we just thought it might be fun and that there would probably be other awesome things there too - like funnel cake and glow-sticks) but by the time Andy got home we were both too tired to do much of anything.  So we resigned ourselves to playing the Legend of Zelda and reading a scary book (I'll let you figure out who did what).  Yep.  That's how we spent our Friday night.  Like old people. For some reason, I kept thinking I had lots t...

Whew! It's been a while since I've been by... I'd tell you why, but then I'd have to kill you.  And we don't want that!  Then who would I talk to (at)?   Let's see - since the last time I was here...*Andy came home (yey!), left again (boo!) and came home again (yey!).  *I got searched by the fuzz...  No really!  Andy and I were going to the Exchange and we were pulled over by 3 policemen and one MA.  They told us they were doing random searches (searching every so many cars - although we didn't see them pull anyone over before us, and they left after us... what can I say?  We look dangerous!) and asked our permission to search the car.  Hesitantly I agreed.  The hesitation was only because I was slightly embarrassed by the pages of a two-day old Washington Post, complete with incorrect crossword answers, strewn about the car, the empty soda cup in the cup-holder, the bag of fries which I'd ordered from Burger King, then...

SPAM!
2007-05-24 22:21:00
And I'm not talking about the potted meat!  In fact, I've never had spam (the potted meat)  some people say it's gross, but as with most things, I won't take anyone's word for it and I must try it for myself.  Anyway...The spam in my inbox is crazy.  My favorites are always the ones that include my name in the subject line.  Makes me feel like the spam was hand picked especially for me (For Once, Love Comes To Amy!; Amy - Naturally Increase The Size of Your Penis!).  Today I got some spam that asked a very good question:  Ever Wonder Why You Never Win The Lottery?  For that very good question, I have a very good answer: No.  I do not ever wonder why I never win the lottery.  I do not win the lottery, because I do not play the lottery.  Because I understand statistics.  And I know that I have a better chance every year of dying from drinking tap water than striking it rich by playing the lottery. But on to more important...

MySpace and Breastfeeding
2007-05-20 23:41:00
Okay. I know I spend WAY too much time on MySpace.  Altering my profile to not look like a MySpace profile (oooh - check out my mad HTML skills!) or reposting those silly surveys (oooh - check out the clever, smart mouth answer I have for every question you ask!) but social networking sites are a good way to keep in touch with your friends who live far away - which most of mine do - and at least I deleted my lizard's MySpace profile...Anyway.  Thing number 637 that drives me nuts about MySpace (well, not so much the site as the users) is the fuss mother MySpacers make about the site disallowing breastfeeding pictures.  Don't get me wrong.  I'm sure breastfeeding is very nice; I hear it's good for the baby being fed and burns extra calories for the mother doing the feeding, but seriously ladies.  Get. A. Grip.  First of all - since MySpace is privately owned and free - and it is CLEARLY stated in the user contract that boobie pictures are not allowe...

Before I get on with the main subject of this post, I have a little bit of kvetching to do. I hope you don't mind... which I'm sure you won't. If you didn't like kvetching, you would not read my blog.  [kvetching]Andy was scheduled to come home... sometime soon... and as you may have guessed, I am very excited about his return.  I even downloaded a program that makes a little countdown clock on my desktop.  I like to check it every few minutes so that I know exactly how many seconds are left until I see him again.  Anyway.  This morning I received a rather disturbing e-mail from the boy, saying that they may not return on the date we'd previously discussed.  They won't be out very much longer (less than a week) and I know he hasn't been gone very long - and compared to 6-month cruises that are often extended to 9-month cruises - this short extension on a short cruise is very minimal, but I'm still rather up-set.[/kvetching]Okay.  Several ...

"Time is going really, really, really slow!"
2007-05-19 03:24:00
I used to hate the news.  Thought it was the worst show ever.  For the most part I still think it's the worst show ever.  I mean, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are excellent programs, but when I see news serious news shows trying to 'spice things up'... you know trying to be more like the fore mentioned Comedy Central news shows... it just makes me hate the news even more.  However, every now and again, even the serious news shows are blessed with gems like this one - that need no extra spice.Apparently, a police officer in Deerborn Michigan was forced to resign after confiscating some marijuana... bringing it home... and baking it into brownies (which he and his wife then consumed).  How was the officer caught you ask?  Why he freaked out and called 911 of course!  They played the recording of the 911 call on the tube, which I will now transcribe for your reading pleasure: COP: I think I'm having an overdose and so is my wife. 911 OPER...

Woe Is Me
2007-05-17 18:26:00
Hello internet. Long time no post.  Sorry about that.  I haven't been feeling so well.  Went to the hospital Monday - don't worry, I'm fine (although I'm supposed to be on some sort of modified bed-rest which seems more like a punishment than a cure).  Alan was able to take me.  He's a very good ER buddy.  Stayed the whole day and even bought me a magazine and a soda.  What more could you ask for?  Andy's still gone - which only adds to the overwhelmingly gloomy atmosphere around here.  The lizard has, again, stopped eating.  Not that I can say I blame her.  Life at the HighlandAmy ranch is not currently conducive to things like merriment and eating.  Also, I 've been spending a lot of time trying to fix my lap top, which for some reason refuses to upload photo files to ANYWHERE.  It's driving me crazy.  Absolutely crazy. But enough with the feeling sorry for myself - let's make a list of people who curre...
Anniversaries and Hatchdays
2007-05-12 16:33:00
Today is the 7th anniversary of my first date with Andy. Well, maybe it is.  About 8 months into our relationship we realized that neither of us knew the exact date of our first date.  We ended-up settling on May the 12th because we knew it was sometime in mid-May and we figured the 12th was close enough for government work. This was the same day that we chose 'our' song.  After much deliberation on the matter we finally decided to put the 6-CD changer (this was back before the invention of the iPod) on 'random' and the first song it played would be our song.  As it happened the CD player chose "Electric Head Part II" by White Zombie.  Not very romantic, but it has become something of an inside joke between the two of us.After we got married Andy informed me that we were no longer going to celebrate the anniversary of our first date, because we now had a wedding anniversary to celebrate (and apparently wedding anniversaries take precedence over anniversa...

Phone Calls From The Future
2007-05-11 20:16:00
This morning I awoke at around 2:00 AM feeling a bit like I was going to vomit my insides all over the bed.  This may, or may not have had to with the swiss cheese and tuna sandwich I'd eaten for dinner.  Note: I did not say tuna SALAD - which would have included things like mayonnaise, celery, boiled eggs, onion, salt and pepper.  It was just tuna.  Straight out of the can and onto the cheese covered bread.  What?  It sounded like a good idea at the time.  So anyway, it was 2:00 AM and I was laying in bed trying not to puke when the phone rang (which was odd because usually I don't receive phone calls during hours when the sun is not up.)  As it happened it was Andy who called and immediately asked me what time it was here.  I told him and he, in turn told me what time it was where he is.  Which he has done every time I've talked to him even though the time difference is always the same.  I guess he called because he'd just...

A Blog About Blogging
2007-05-10 16:39:00
Sometimes I wonder what's okay to post on here and what's not.   On the one hand, it's just a little personal blog that not very many people read -- and most of those who do know me, if not in the real world from various message boards and such -- but on the other hand, anything I post on here is available to anyone with an active internet connection.  I know I've posted on this very subject before, but like I mentioned earlier, this is a personal blog and what's safe to post is what's on my mind today. As far as general information goes there are three levels of bloggers: tier 1 bloggers, who feel perfectly comfortable posting their full names and the names of the cities they live in; tier 2 bloggers, who use first names only and the general regions they live in and tier 3 bloggers who use nicknames and rarely post anything about where they live. While there are plenty of tier 1 bloggers who's sites have been up for years without incident stemming from their hav...

Vox QoTd:  When was the last time you interacted with any sort of wildlife? Why it was just yesterday! First of all -- you should know that I have no idea where people who live in my neighborhood shop for groceries. I suppose I could ask one of my neighbors -- I'm sure they'd be happy to tell me since they are all SUPER nice, but to be honest their niceness freaks me out a little. Too many years of living in DC I guess. Anyway -- usually I just drive over to the Naval Air Station and shop at the Commissary. It's not too long of a dive (10 min give or take) and food is cheaper there. Plus I get carded at the door, so that makes me feel less like I'm out buying eggs and breakfast cereal and more like I'm out at some posh night-club. Yesterday I decided I would NOT go to the commissary and I would just find a grocery store. It would be an adventure and besides -- there had to be one somewhere. People in my neighborhood have to eat -- right? After driving around fo...

Last week I changed my phone number, but forgot to give the new number to a lot of folks.  If you're one of them -- please send me an e-mail and I'll send you the number.  But anyway...Sunday morning I took a trip to the beach with a blanket and my cheesy Nicholas Sparks book.  For whatever reason I thought it might be chilly at the ocean front so I wore long pants, flippies and a sweatshirt.  When I arrived, much to my chagrin, the weather was gorgeous and there were even folks in the water!  I removed my flippies, rolled-up my pant legs and took off my sweatshirt which I used as a pillow while I read and let my legs get some sun.  (I thought it would do them some good since they were their natural shade of bluish day-glow white.)   Several hours later, when I'd finished my book, I packed-up to leave.  Got to the car and realized my glasses were no where to be found.  This had me sort of worried because they were the back-up pair...

2007-04-28 02:00:00
I got my library card today.  And also a Nicholas Sparks books -- I know!  I know!  It's trash and while I hate Nicholas Sparks as a person (he was once overheard by Virginia in a DC bookstore saying that the only people who read his books are "illiterate housewives".  While that may very well be true -- his books all pretty much the same sticky sweet, easy read love story over and over -- I don't think it's cool to insult your readers, especially since they are the ones putting your books on Bestseller lists,) which is why I refuse to buy his books -- but sometimes I just want to read something light and fluffy so I see nothing wrong with renting them from the library. Last night Jean and Jen picked me up to go look at a house Jen is selling.  The house was nice -- although I'm not sure I'd pay half a million dollars for it.   Partly because I don't have half a million dollars... but also because it was on a corner lot.  I like to be hi...

Clerical Errors Were On My Side
2007-04-26 15:45:00
Yesterday it seemed as though clerical errors were on my side!My first trip was the DMV.  Strangely I was able, in under 2 hours, to get everything I needed to do done there - AND the personal property tax I thought I may have forgotten to pay (from the last time I lived in Virginia)?  There was no mention of it.  Which means either I paid it and forgot (or my Mom and Jack paid it and forgot to tell me) or the state just forgot about it - though I doubt that's the case.  They never forget when it's you that owes them money*.  Next stop school.  When we first got back here, I called my old school and they said my student status was 'inactive'.  I was not surprised by this.  The last time I had taken a class there was in the summer of '04.  Anyway, I was going to have to re-apply and do all the extra junk that comes along with that.  More over, to apply for in-state tuition I would have to gather lots of Andy's Naval paperwork an...

The other day I was chatting with my mom while she was at the grocery store. I guess being around all the food sparked her interest in my eating habits since Andy's been gone (or it could have been because it's been an awfully long time since she's lived alone,) and she asked me if it's hard to cook for just one person. My answer? Nope.

Friday my mom picked Cowboy up, but decided she was not fond of his name.  I suggested Elliot Kravitz as a new name (after the the protagonist from the book 'Hug Me' who just wanted someone to hug him back).  She liked it and Cowb0y's name is now Elliot Kravitz.Later that night Jean and I decided to go see Disturbia, which would have been your average teen-thriller were it not for the two full rows of 12/13-year-old girls behind us.  Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure she and I were the only people in the theater who were older than 15... but that's not the point.  I don't want to spoil the highly developed plot for any would-be movie-goers, so I won't go into detail, but every time the supposed killer came on screen the two rows of girls would let out a chorus of screams.  Bloodcurdling screams.  That continued until the supposed killer was, once again, out of view.  Even when the character was just... say... mowing the lawn, they would S...

Yesterday on my daily trip outside, I went to the beach.  It was sort of chilly and cloudy, but I couldn't think of anywhere else to go... so.  I took some pictures too...Here is a fence and some plants and the ocean...Like I said, it was a little foggy... also the sea was rather foamy...Here is a fence covered with sand...That's me looking at the ocean.I wrote Andy a brief, yet poignant note in the sand.  I assume when the tide came in, the ocean washed the note away... and at some point it will get to Andy.  In the event that the note does not reach him - I took this picture as back-up.This guy was not at the beach.  He is my mom's new friend Cowboy.  Isn't he cute?  I'm very excited because she said I can pet him.

As you may have noticed, this week I'm participating in my usual memes (Wordless Wednesday and Thursday Thirteen.)  There's no reason for this aside from the fact that I just don't feel like it.  I'll probably bring them back in the future, but for now they are on hiatus.Interest ing things:Yesterday I was on my daily trip outside (I've decided to force myself to go outside at least once a day so the at I do not become an actual hermit), and I saw the VB bomb squad!  They were inside of an oddly shaped bomb squad vehicle sirens blaring and rushing toward the ocean front.  Perhaps to save people from mooninites?I miss my old house.  It was quiet.  And a lot bigger.  It's been a long time since I've lived in an apartment, maybe I just have to get used to it again.  Also?  At the old house none of the neighbors talked to me.  Which I imagine was because we lived on the base so everyone was aware that they or their neighbors were p...

Okay. I can't keep quiet any longer. I'm going to post about Virginia Tech . Because it's my blog and I paid for this corner of the internet so I can post about whatever I want.First order of business: Myspace .Every time I look at my bulletins there are more and more posts reminding readers of what happened and how horrible it was.  Yes.  We know.  But praying and posting does not change what happened or bring back the dead.  Neither does talking about it until you are blue in the face.  Do I have an opinion about it and a unique perspective because I am from Virginia and lived in the same town the shooter grew-up in?  No.  Is that insensitive?  Maybe... or maybe it's insensitive to twist a tragedy into something that will make you the center of attention (if only for a moment to the readers of your silly MySpace bulletin.)Second: Immigration.Every time I turn on the TV there is more talk about the shooter being a South Korean national.&...

Andy's New Navy Slogan
2007-04-17 23:10:00
I just deleted a big long post about the shootings at Virginia Tech because it turned into an anti-gun-control rant.  I hate how the media tries to take a tragedy and twist it into something to push their political agenda.  Disgusting.  All I'm going to post about Tech is that my heart goes out to the families of the victims and to the family of the shooter. And also that guns don't kill people, crazy folks do!!  But I digress...Today I designed a new logo for the US Navy featuring the new slogan Andy came-up with.  They change it all the time.  Remember, it used to be: Navy.  It's Not A Job, It's An Adventure!  and now it's:  Navy.  Accelerate Your Life.  So we're hoping that the Navy will take this new slogan and design into consideration.NAVYGRAB A SWAB!I haven't uploaded any new photos to flickr in weeks.  I haven't really taken any photos in weeks.  Which could be because I haven't left my house much or co...

It's raining out.  But I don't mind because it's warm and the rain seems to have turned everything green breathing fresh life into the grass and the trees (not to mention it washed away a good deal of the pollen).  It must be either the rain or the fact that I got an e-mail from Andy that has turned my crestfallen mood upside down.Andy's alive and well.  Says he likes his new ship.  He also warned me that the e-mail system is monitored, so I guess I should shy away from sending him any information about the illegal gambling ring I'm now running as a hobby.  Oopse.  I probably shouldn't post that here either.  Anyway, I wrote him back asking all the important questions: Has he seen any mermaids?; Keelhauled anyone?; Made anyone walk the plank?  I'm excited to hear back with answers to these burning questions, but he's busy and probably won't get back to me for another couple of days.In film news:  I finally saw Transamerica last n...
