"I spent my Friday night with 6 sailors!"
2007-03-07 13:42:01
On Friday nights Andy's class usually gets out early.  Last Friday was no exception - he arrived home around 9:00 PM and immediately suggested that we go to the store and get some beer, then mentioned that if I went along there would be a 'treat' in it for me.  We picked-up some beer and candy were both carded at the check-out (though I'm not particularly old, I'm still always pleasantly surprised when cashiers think I'm too young to be buying beer or lottery tickets). As we pulled into the driveway at home, another car containing two of Andy's friends pulled in behind us.  Andy went to talk to them while I brought our purchases into the house.  A few moments later, Andy came in and asked if I wanted to go over to McManus's house with them.  I mulled it over.  On the one hand I was bored and going over there would be something to do, but on the other hand I remembered the last time we went over there and the drunken mess it became. I decided we m...

Tuesday came and went with no sign of either the maintenance man or the evil Beila from the housing office.  This seemed to concern Andy, but when we found out that they had not shown-up at the house of our neighbors (who had a walk-through scheduled for the same day) I figured it was nothing to worry about.  Also - the fore mentioned neighbors confirmed that Beila is in fact evil and that I am not being 'irrational', 'overly-sensitive' or 'a baby' for thinking that she is or hoping that she gets head lice.  So if you were thinking I was being one of those things - I'm not.  You can even ask Sue and Matthew.Wednesday was Andy's doctor's appointment.  You'll be pleased to learn that he is seaworthy.  No leaks or damage to his hull.  He also does not have TB, or Typhoid, or Croitsfeld-Yacob's disease or whatever else they tested him for AND he is not pregnant (which is good because as far as I know he does not have a uterus.)Thursday I fin...

At One O'clock today we have an appointment to have a representative from the housing office come over and see that we've not destroyed our house in the past 6-months.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the person they send is the kindly maintenance man who came over to help me change some light bulbs when I couldn't figure out how (true story!) and not that horrible woman Beila.  I wish there was some way for me to know who they are going to send so I could either bake some cookies or set some booby-traps a la Home Alone.  Then again, we'd scheduled a walk-through when we first moved in and no one ever showed -up for that one, so maybe we'll get lucky with this one too.Andy had a doctor's appointment yesterday to see if he is seaworthy.   His visit entailed a barrage of tests including those for HIV, TB, Hepatitis and pregnancy.  We'll get the results on the 28th.  If any of them come back positive, he's going to have some explaining to...

Thursday Thirteen #5: The Last Thirteen Books I Read
2007-03-01 13:38:02
The Last Thirteen Book s I Read 1. This I Believe Collection of essays from the NPR Show 2. The Drawing of The Three Book II in Stephen King's Dark Tower series 3. The Gunslinger Book I in Stephen King's Dark Tower series 4. Life of Pi This one I'd read before, but it's just so good that I decided to read it again 5. Emma The Jane Austen classic 6. Their Eyes Were Watching God  Very good, but at times the dialog must be read aloud to be understood 7. The Sirens of Titan I like Kurt Vonnegut a lot. 8. The Man Who Ate The 747 Complete rubbish.  Romantic, but not particularly well written. 9. Rosemary's Baby A wonderful combination of scary and funny.  The whole while your not really sure if something macabre is going on or if it's all in your head.  10. The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde The Robert Louis Stevenson classic 11. The Devil Wears Prada A fun read, but it kinda goes nowhere and has little closure 12. Treasure Island Another Robert Louis S...
Virginia Beach it is!
2007-02-26 13:36:01
Yey! Not next weekend, but the weekend after we have an appointment to go look at the apartment I really, really want!  It's in Virgin ia Beach , which we decided would be better than Norfolk - and by 'we decided' I mean 'Andy was admit about from the start, and after reading apartment reviews of places in Norfolk, I acquiesced'.  At first I thought Andy was just being stuck-up or a baby for not wanting to live in Norfolk.  When I expressed said opinion, he looked at me like I'd sprouted another head and said something along the lines of  "Right.  Because I'm soooo stuck-up and used to living in the lap of luxury.  Either that or I accurately remember the city of Norfolk (and the shootings and the crack heads,) and perhaps don't want you living there period, let alone by yourself for extended periods of time.  Either one is plausible."When I thought about it, I did in fact remember one encounter I'd had with a crack head in Norfolk.  I...
Amy Vs. The Internet
2007-02-22 19:32:01
Earlier this month I joined a blog meme called Thursday Thirteen.  Maybe you've seen my TTs?   Maybe you've seen someone else's?  Anyway you just post a list of thirteen things on Thursdays.  It's fun.  Last night I posted one about re-runs of TV shows I never get tired of watching... too good for TV if you will.  Anyway, this morning I learned that the creator of TT has decided to retire the meme.  Very sad news considering I only got to do four of them.  Although, to be honest - I was thinking of not doing them anymore because blog memes are silly and this, dear reader, is a very serious blog.  So - goodbye TT (well, goodbye unless someone else buys the rights to you, in which case I will probably continue to post lists).Later, I fell for a MySpace rumor.  Any MySpacer knows that on any given day there are around a million rumors circulating on the site saying that MySpace is going shut down (gasp!) or that if you log on at a c...

[rant]Oh. My. Gosh.  Andy and I just dealt with the meanest person in a service job I think I've ever encountered.  She works at the housing office on our base.  We had to go there to give them 30-days notice of our intent to vacate.  There's some paperwork involved - some incredibly poorly worded paperwork if you ask me, and we just had to go take care of that.  So, we started filling it out and while we were working on it the mean lady (we'll call her Beila) was off in a corner ranting about how stupid everyone is, and how the licensing office at the main gate keep "changing the rules" on her and wouldn't let the repairman she'd hired onto the base.  Of course, later we learned that said repairman was not a US citizen and did not have a green-card.  So.  Maybe that had something to do with why they wouldn't let him on.  We ignored her rant and continued to fill-out the paperwork which we eventually had some questions about.  ...

Thursday Thirteen #4: TV Show Re-Runs I Never Get Tired of Watching
2007-02-22 07:31:01
Thirteen TV Show Re-Runs I Never Get Tired of Watch ing 1. Gilmore Girls Ever yone on this show is so clever, but you almost miss a lot of their cleverness because they talk so darn fast! 2. Star Trek TNG I don't care if Andy thinks it's 'dorky'. I don't care if YOU think it's 'dorky'. I love TNG. 3. Designing Women I love all four of these women... five if you count Anthony... six if you count Bernise... but Suzanne is the best! 4. The Highlander Eventhough the movies are better (and by 'movies' I mean the first movie) I still like the series. 5. Sex and The City This show is great because it shows you how women really talk... like gay men. 6. Full House Stop laughing. I like Full House. Especially Uncle Jesse. In fact, I've loved Unlce Jesse since he was Blackie Parish on General Hospital. 7. Golden Girls I hope when I'm an old lady I'm 1/4 as awesome as Sophia. She's so tiny and evil! 8. Six Feet Under Sure it's pretentious, but it's still a good sho...

Greetings! You may have noticed some changes... yep, I gave HighlandAmy.com a complete make-over! The home page is way prettier, the blog has less bells and whistles, but I think that may be for the best since at least now you won't have to wait 1,000 years for the page to load. I got rid of some pages, and added a forum. I don't know what we're going to discuss yet (awesome stuff I would assume) but during the make-over I noticed that a fun and fabulous forum came free with my hosting package, so I thought 'What the heck?! I'll use it!' And now I can tell all my friends that in addition to being a lizard mother, webmistress, and ordained minister, I am now also a forum host! And they will all turn green with envy. I'm sure. I'll bet your wondering what sparked the redesign. Well, it all started with MySpace (as most things do). I was giving my page a make-over because I got this weird feeling that there was too much personal information easily accesible to anyone who m...
Silly Navy
2007-02-17 19:27:03
The Navy is so funny sometimes! We got a bunch of paperwork today having to do with our impending PCS move. We have to specify whether we will be driving or flying - which I can understand, I mean not all PCS moves are less than 500 miles, but I just thought it was funny because to be perfectly honest - there have been occasions where getting from the surrounding suburbs to a DC airport has taken longer than it takes to drive from here to Norfolk. If we did fly, I'm sure we'd be stuck on one of those scary little puddle-jumper commuter plains for the duration of the 15-minute flight. So, since we will be driving, the Navy wants to see a copy of the registration of the vehicle we will be taking... because we might be lying. We might say we're going to drive, but then ride our skateboards the 400+ miles. They have to cover all their bases. Oh - that - and before Andy gets to his new duty station he has to take a pregnancy test. Just in case. I told him to tell them he's o...

Valentine's Day
2007-02-16 01:25:02
Open Scene: 12:01, February 14 2005: St. Vale nti ne 's Day It was technically Valentine's Day, so I let Andy open the Valentine I spent 30 min making him (and by 'let' I mean 'encouraged', 'proded', and finally 'insisted'). He seemed to enjoy it, which pleased me. It was late and I am old - so I went to bed and fell immediately into a death-like coma. Two hours passed before Andy came to bed and woke me to tell me that the ice storm raging outside had knocked the power out. I hissed at him, and went back to sleep. Another two hours passed before I was jerked to wakefulness by the sounds of the whipping wind and crashing ice which I managed to convince myself were not actually ice and wind, but zombies and/or axe murderers trying to break into the house to eat our brains and/or chop us up. Of course, the power was still out (zombies and killers often utilize power outages and cover of night to conceal their brain eating and/or chopping activities) so I stumbled into th...

2007-02-14 19:23:02
Hello again blog! Long time no write! Once again, my absence was not due to my having been busy, it was just that nothing really interesting has been going on. I promise. I've just been sitting around thinking about moving back to Norfolk... and how we should have just left our stuff there two years ago instead of lugging it across the country with us... and how two of the four people in Andy's class who got Hawaii wanted Norfolk, but sadly no one is allowed to trade. ::shakes fist angrily at USN:: I guess those two people must be insane or something. I mean, Norfolk is nice and all, but by no measure is it more awesome than Hawaii.

Curses!
2007-02-09 19:18:02
It was a dark day in Amyville. It all started last night. I had trouble sleeping because I felt too yucky and because Andy was on watch all night, so I was alone and thusly terrified of being murdered in my bed. Around 3:00 AM I finally sucked down the last of the nighttime cough medicine (which worked well - it took me from zero to comatose in under 5 min. I barely had time to make it into bed). So anyway, when day broke I was still feeling the groggy effects of the meds, but no longer feeling the cold-curing effects and there I was fore grumpy and grouchy. The only cold medicine I had left was sealed in an Amy-proof package so I spent the early part of the day skulking around my house and waiting for Andy to come home and open it for me.

So the Bears (the team I'd opted to root for) lost the Super Bowl. They started out strong - then I fell asleep for a bit - woke-up and they were WAY behind, and I guess they never caught-up. Which is sad but one of the perks of not having too much vested in any certain team is that when 'your' team loses, it's not that big a deal.

Andy's Dad has had meetings down here all week, and last night he suggested that we all go out to dinner. Of course, I was (and still am) in the throws of my death plague (which I hear is supposed to last 8 days. I've survived 5 days of it so far, though I'm not sure I can make it 3 more days) so we opted to stay in. I made spaghetti and meatballs - since it required minimal effort on the part of the sick lady. He's down here again today, so perhaps we'll go out tonight. That is if I can convince myself to bathe and get dressed.

2007-02-05 19:15:02
So - it's Super Bowl Sunday once again! I'm not really a football fan (to be honest, I don't really watch sports at all) so the fact that this year the Colts will be playing the Bear s means little to me. Of course, I've chosen a team to route for like I always do. My method of choosing sports teams to root for has little to do with routing for the opponent of the teams who've beaten my favorite teams or the coaches or players or even who has the cutest uniform. I always route for Boston teams first. If we're talking about basketball I root for the Celtics because as a person of Scottish decent I like their name and also because I was born in Boston. If we're talking about hockey I root for the Bruins - again because of the Boston thing (but really I'm just happy to be watching guys in skates bludgeoning each other on the ice.) If we're talking about baseball I route for the Red Sox because that's who my mother taught me to root for (even when they break your heart.)...

Mooninite Invasion
2007-02-02 19:13:01
And so a new month begins. The last full month we'll live here. Well, the last full month Andy will be in school here. It's entirely possible that we'll end-up stuck here for weeks after he's done depending on where his orders are to. Yes, that's right, we still don't have them. It wouldn't drive me up the wall so much, but the class who graduates this month got their orders in October. Four MONTHS before graduation. Andy's class graduates in March, and still no word. Anyway, we're leaving soon, and we still have stuff in boxes. Which shouldn't surprise me as much as it does because some of those boxes have been sealed for 2 - 3 years now. 2 - 3 years through and 6 moves. We've moved 6 times in 3 years. It seems like more when I type it out and actually look at the sentence than it seemed like actually doing it. Just kidding - moving stinks - which is part of the reason why I'm so anxious for new orders. We should be where ever we're going for 3 whole year...

Not much new here. It's chilly. I'm sick. Andy's sick. We both hate the cold. Rented some movies, made some s'mores, drank some hot chocolate and ate some chicken soup. Finished my lovely new blog design (which will premiere tomorrow - so stay tuned!) Started a new book. Resumed reading an old one. Borrowed book 4 of the Dark Tower series from Keith. No word on where we're moving yet. Here's a wonderful video clip from the Ellen Show for you to enjoy. (I've been on both ends of the Drunk Dial, but I think Gladys has mastered the art. After all, she has had 88 years of practice...)

Groundhog Day!
2007-02-02 19:13:01
Good news! Punxsutawney Phil (you know, the groundhog) did not see his shadow this morning! Which, of course, according to German folklore means we can expect an early spring instead of six more weeks of winter! Huzzah! Three cheers for Phil! It's about time we had an early spring! Since 1886, Phil has seen his shadow a total of 96 times, not seen his shadow 15 times, and 9 times the records of whether or not he saw his shadow have been lost or misplaced. Probably part of some Punxsutawney Ground hog Club cover-up or conspiracy, but I digress. Far more often than not, the little critter predicts more bad weather. In fact, the last time he didn't see his shadow was back in 1999. So I guess we were due for a positive prediction.

Recently, it's come to my attention that I am not the only person who cannot tear themselves away from VH1's celebreality series Flavor of Love. A little background: Flavor Flav made a name for himself with the politically conscious hip-hop group Public Enemy. More recently he's re-entered the public eye by appearing on several VH1 series. First, there was The Surreal Life in 2004. Originally this show was based on MTV's The Real World (only VH1 used B/C-List celebrities) - in later seasons it's become a more of game show splitting players-up and having them compete, but more on that later. Anyway, in 2004 Flavor Flav was on The Surreal Life where he met and developed a romantic relationship with co-star Brigitte Nielsen. Who is 6'1" - exactly two times as tall as Flavor Flav! VH1 knows a hit show when they see it and subsequently created Strange Love which basically chronicled Flav and Brigitte's life together. In March of 2005, Brigitte ended their relationship and...

S'Mores!
2007-01-26 01:06:01
Last summer I bought a Hershey's S'more making kit because I love s'mores and roasting marshmallows. In fact, when we had more of a choice in where we lived I always insisted on having a wood burning fireplace so that I could roast marshmallows indoors - which BTW Andy never let me do because it is "dangerous" and "weird". So anyway, I bought the cute little contraption and graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows and brought it over to my sister's house one day when she was feeling down, after all what kind of person could be unhappy while roasting a marshmallow, or while eating a s'more?! We set-up the marshmallow roaster and prepared to roast when we realized the kit came sans heating element! A quick look at the directions let us know that we need to provide our own. A sterno. Of course, neither of us knew what that was or where to get one so we attempted to roast the marshmallows over the stove which ended badly.

Logan!
2007-01-24 13:04:01
At 4:00 AM on Sunday January 21 2007, Logan Westley (Lindsay and Pat's New Baby) made his debut. I got to meet him yesterday and can attest to the fact that he is ten lbs, eleven oz and twenty-two inches of pure cuteness. Every time I meet a new baby, I think to myself: this baby is the cutest baby I've ever seen... probably that ever was. And what's funny about babies is that although it seems impossible, that statement always true. Every baby I meet really IS the cutest baby I've every seen.
Several Days of Goings-On
2007-01-23 13:03:03
I try to update my blog everyday, as you can see I'm only successful every two - three days which is because I'm a very busy girl. I have to use precious time that should be spent doing important Amy things to sit and document my life. So posts like this one have to cover several days of goings-on. Friday night Andy and I went bowling with the people he goes to school with. We arrived at the alley around eight and were informed that no lanes would be available for about an hour. That was fine because there was a bar upstairs which made passing the time fairly painless. After everyone (myself excluded) had had several drinks, we were informed that our lanes were ready. I abstained from bowling because I was waiting for some important phone calls, because I'm a terrible bowler and lastly because my idea of hell certainly involves rented two-tone shoes. After the second game pretty much everyone had completely lost interest in bowling.

For the past few months my car has been doing this thing where it sometimes squeals. I didn't mind the squealing. I thought it added character. Andy, on the other hand, was not so fond of the noise and said I needed to have a belt replaced. Being my usual procrastinaty self, I decided to wait as long as possible to have it looked at. And by 'as long as possible' I mean until Andy put me in the car and drove it to the repair shop himself. Or at least, attempted to drive it there.

All week I look forward to seeing new episodes of The Office and Scrubs on NBC. Today, I made sure everything was done and that Andy and I were comfortably seated on the couch about an hour before the shows were scheduled to air. I with my diet coke, Andy with his beer and the Simpsons on TV. I glanced at the clock and announced: "Only one hour till The Office!" And then: Blackness. As if it was God saying "Yes, but not for you."
