A Merry Christmas Indeed
2006-12-29 18:46:01
T'was the night before Chris t mas all through the house, not a creature was stirring, except for Amy who was baking up a storm. 50 cupcakes, brownies, cheesecake lemon bars, Christmas cookies... and the next day was spent pawning said baked goods off on friends and family. Christmas Day Stop One: Lindsay and Pat's. I wasn't sure if they were even home, but figured even if they weren't I could leave their box of confections on their doorstep and it would be a happy surprise when they got home. As it turned out they were indeed home, so I went in and said hello. They were on their way to Pat's mom's house, and Andy and I were on our way to his parents' house so we only stayed long enough to give them the cookies, say Merry Christmas and see everything Ethan got from Santa Claus.
A Dark Day

Here in the Northern Hemisphere, today was the Winter Solstice. That means our half of the Earth was tilted it's farthest away from the sun. Today, we experienced the least amount of light, and the greatest amount of darkness. The sun's path took it's lowest arch in the sky. Andy and I opted to put off Christmas shopping as long as humanly possible. We did this for a number of reasons. One, we are both expert procrastinators. Were it up to us, we would put off breathing. And Two, what's more exciting than scavenging sparsely stocked, heavily picked-over store shelves for the prefect Christmas gift?! So anyway, today was our Christmas shopping day. We managed to put off getting out of bed until around eleven, and getting dressed until around one, but by the time two o'clock rolled around, we both knew there was no way around it. We had to go.

Burlesque Dancing In My Living Room

Yesterday was Virginia's birthday. Lucky for us, Andy and I were still close enough to help her celebrate. Virginia said the dinner reservation was for 7:30, so when Andy got home at 4:00 we got ready and left with plenty of time to compensate for traffic/getting lost. It was decided that I would drive in an effort to prevent Andy's Maryland/Virginia into DC Jekyll/Hyde transformation. Especially since from where we live, we enter the city's South East quadrant, and our destination was in the North West quadrant - all the way across the city. Due to a miscalculation, I ended-up getting us into a situation some people might describe as 'Lost in South East at Night.' For those of you who don't know - South East is the scariest part of the city, especially after nightfall. Also - all roads eventually lead into South East, yet none lead out. It's sort of a creepy nexus that way.

Andy had an extra long weekend and the weather was unseasonably gorgeous, so we had planned on doing exciting things like going to the spy museum, going down to Virginia Beach, taking a tour of the winery near our house. Sadly, we didn't do a single one of those things. Instead, we rented a million movies, ordered pizza, and I was allowed to cut Andy's hair. First, the movies. We rented: Nacho Libre, Talladega Nights, Thank You For Smoking, and season one of Big Love. I liked Nacho Libre. Andy - not so much. Really there are two kinds of people in the world. People who like Jack Black and people who don't. I like Jack Black. Andy - not so much. I had high hopes for Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. I think Will Ferrell is hilarious and I really like John C Reilly. So anyway, although there were funny parts, the movie as a whole was kind of a let down (with the exception of the southern accents - Andy and I had fun talking like the characters in the movie.)

I made potato latkes with dinner tonight because it is the first night of Hanukkah. And also because they are delicious. With the latkes, we had pork chops since they were the last meat in the house (tomorrow is grocery day - the Saturday after pay-day - ugh) and because pork is kosher. Just kidding. As far as I know, pork can never be kosher. (Although pigs DO have cloven hooves, they don't chew their own cud and are therefore off limits. Correct me if I'm wrong.) I don't keep kosher, or even attempt to, for the following reasons: 1. I am not Jewish. 2. As I mentioned earlier, I don't think pork can ever be kosher. Bacon is a pork product. I don't see the point in living if you can't eat bacon. 3. I don't know how. It's been said that if you ask 7 different people how to keep kosher - you will get 7 different answers. In my experience, this is true. But enough about what I had for dinner...

I wasn't paying attention this year

Instead of a regular workday, yesterday Andy got to take a field trip to Norfolk to see some ship. So he left super early. And didn't come home for lunch. And also returned later than usual. Highlights of his trip included: *squeezing 12 full size humans into a broom closet *eating a giant hamburger *going to the NEX (exciting, I know) Highlights of my alone-day included: *mopping the kitchen floor *learning the difference between alligators and crocodiles (fascinating) *eating a whole bunch of delicious cookies (ones I made myself)

Amy's Sense of Snow
2006-12-29 18:46:01
You'll be pleased to know that the ailments that have been plaguing me as of late are all but gone. Unfortunately, I woke-up this morning with horrible back pain. Like I pulled a muscle or something. I'm not how I would have pulled a muscle, the heaviest thing I've lifted lately has been the laundry... which isn't very heavy. Having back pain is such an old people ailment. One common to old people and athletes... and I'm certainly not the latter.

Phillips is flying out to his ship today which sounds sucky at first, but once you hear the specifics it actually sounds kind of awesome. I'd tell you what the specifics are, but every time I start to, I get this mental image of a WWII era poster with a picture of a hand reaching out of the water and the words "Loose Lips Sink Ships". And then I picture Phillips attached to that hand and immediately backspace like a crazy woman because loose keyboards sink ships too (they just don't put it on a poster because it doesn't rhyme.) So take it from me, we're happy. Andy's out of school for the next couple weeks so we don't talk about Naval things except how he wouldn't mind being stationed in San Diego because of the nice people and the weather (Andy lived in San Diego many years ago and hasn't stopped raving about it since.) And also because we could stay with the Phillips' until we got housing (so the real reason comes out! Andy just wants to room with Phillips again!) ...

When I Grow Up
2006-12-29 18:46:01
So - your probably wondering why I haven't updated in so long. That would be because I'm horribly sick. Not sick enough for you to be worried or for me to go to my favorite place - the hospital... just sick enough that I don't want to do anything but kvetch, mope and lay on the couch. Don't worry - I'm not going to bore and/or gross you out with the details of my illness... The other day (before I fell ill) I was talking to my friend about what we wanted to be when we grew-up (when we were little.) She had wanted to be a fashion designer. Spent count-less hours designing outfits on construction paper with colored pencils. For a time, my sister did the same thing. To this day, when we're out shopping and Beccah sees something similar to an outfit she'd designed she brings up the fact that she should have been a famous fashion designer. Beccah's pieces were always very fashion forward. I remember her designing several dresses with asymmetrical hem-lines back in the e...

Andy's Crazy Wife

I was listening to the radio (more specifically the local NPR station) and it was mentioned several times that the movie The Nativity Story had the distinction of being the only movie this fall to have been given two thumbs up by the Pope. Quite an honor. Two Papal thumbs up... but I was thinking, that this may have something to do with the fact that this movie also has the distinction of being the only religious movie this fall. I mean, it's not quite the same as saying "The Nativity Story was the only film this fall to have been given two thumbs up by Siskel and Roper." As God's Main Earthly PR guy, I'm sure the Pope has more important ecclesiastical responsibilities than reviewing movies, but I digress.
