Top 10 Mysterious Diseases
2007-11-15 04:02:00
No.10       Morgellons Disease This mysterious illness, which has cropped up again recently, displays almost sci-fi symptoms. Sufferers complain of intensely creepy-crawly skin and odd fibrous strands which protrude from open wounds. Some in the medical community blame the “disease” on psychotic delusion, but others say the symptoms are very real. No.9    Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Chronic fatigue is a classic MUPS (medically unexplained physical symptoms) disease, with a diagnosis based only on the ruling out of other possibilities. More than just feeling a little tired, CFS patients are often bed-ridden for days at a time. No.8 Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease One version of this rare brain disorder is better known “Mad Cow” and can be contracted by eating contaminated beef. “Regular” CJD is also always fatal, quick-acting and is the most common form, but develops in most patients for reasons doctors have yet to figure out and can not prevent. strange thing happen on me today
2007-11-15 03:46:00
This has to be the one of the strangest things that happen to me: Standing on the subway platform waiting for my train and I see a small mouse mossying below me. To pass the time I am watching him and found it amusing that whenever I jingled the change in my pocket he would stop and look around but paid no mind to the trains rumbling throughout the station. What are the chances I could hit that mouse with a quarter? Yeah. I took out a quarter and lobed it at him hitting it square in the head. Knocked him out cold. I mean like a stone. Guy standing next to me saw it and was impressed with my aim. If that wasn’t strange enough as if on a que a monster (kitten killer) rat came out from under the platform, grabbed the mouse and dragged it back under the platform. The rat had to be stalking the mouse. Me and the other guy looked at each other in complete shock! Had to share that with you all.

Sunshine ‘helps to keep you young’
2007-11-14 16:02:00
A healthy dose of sunshine may be the secret to staying young, British scientists have revealed. Vitamin D is produced naturally by the skin in response to sunlight and may help to slow the ageing process and protect against heart disease, according to the study. Researchers from King’s College London studied 2,160 women aged between 18 and 79, looking at their telomeres - a biological marker of ageing found in DNA. As people get older their telomeres get shorter and they become more susceptible to certain illnesses. But the study found women with high levels of vitamin D had comparatively longer telomeres - a sign of being biologically younger and healthier. The study suggests vitamin D may help to slow down the ageing process of DNA, and therefore the ageing process as a whole. Lead researcher Dr Brent Richards said: “These results are exciting because they demonstrate for the first time that people who have higher levels of vitamin D may age more slowly than people wi...

Why Are We Fooled by Ventriloquists?
2007-11-09 14:33:00
Why Are We Fooled by Ventriloquists? - Because everybody has a degree of synesthesiaIn many cases what you see is not what you hear and what you hear is not what you see. This is how many tricks work, like ventriloquists making people believe the dummy is speaking. Now, a monkey brain has revealed us how this can happen: due to a brain nucleus involved in sight and sound simultaneously.”The prevailing wisdom among brain scientists has been that each of the five senses—sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste—is governed by its own corresponding region of the brain. Now we are beginning to appreciate that it’s not that simple,” said Jennifer Groh, a neurobiologist at Duke University in Durham, N.C. and co-author of the research published in the journal for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The new research could explain synesthesia, a rare neurological disease combining two or more senses. In synesthesia, some people, for example, perceive colo...
Bibles Banned at 2008 Beijing Olympics
2007-11-08 16:17:00
Organizers for the 2008 Olympics in China have released their list of items banned from the Olympic village where the athletes will stay.Among the “prohibited objects” — Bibles . The Catholic News Agency reports that the committee behind the Beijing games cited “security reasons” for the ban. Athletes are also prohibited from bearing any kind of religious symbol at Olympic facilities. The ban seems to undermine comments released by the country’s top religious affairs official. Last month, Ye Xiaowen acknowledged that he expected large numbers of religious faithful among the athletes, coaches and tourists to be swarming into the officially atheist nation during the Olympics. Xiaowen, director-general of the State Administration for Religious Affairs, said on Oct. 17 that China plans to offer religious services for foreigners. He recognized that religion will play a positive role “in promoting economic and social development” in the futur...

The Truth About the Breast-Enhancing Gum
2007-11-08 04:43:00
This time, the Japanese did not come out on the market with talking robots or some weird ‘tech-wonder’; this is perhaps one of the most unusual inventions. Those Japanese girls chewing gum are in fact saving thousands of dollars meant for breast augmentation surgeries. The Bust-Up gum is a miracle, since you only have to chew that particular kind of gum at least three times a day. The manufacturers ensure us that a trial made on 10 women who tested the gum induced miraculous changes: in just the first month of chewing, the woman had to buy bras 2 sizes larger, not to mention they got slimmer and looked younger. In studies made by Thai and British researchers 70% of the subjects noticed visible differences… Other supposedly beneficial effects would be: improved blood circulation, lowered stress, blood pressure and cholesterol, attenuated wrinkles, healthier skin and hair. The gum would also directly improve sexual life by ameliorating menstruation pains, and increasing the...

80 Percent of Mobile TV Viewers from Japan and South-Korea
2007-11-08 04:32:00
A new report from the analyst firm Berg Insight found that almost 40 million people in Japan and South Korea watch mobile TV. This means 78 percent of the total mobile TV broadcasting, which makes a huge chunk of this market. The result is little surprising. It is common knowledge that mobile TV has reached a much higher evolution rate in these countries, although the exact proportion of this tendency was only estimated. The Asia-Pacific markets are several years ahead of Europe and North America when it comes to this type of technology. In these other continents the development, in most cases, has been very slow and received little interest from mobile phone users. When it comes to the regular providers for this type of content, “We believe that regular mobile networks will remain the dominant carrier for mobile video, at least for the next couple of years”, considers Sabine Ehlers, associate analyst, Berg Insight. Ericsson sees this solution as best in the case of this...

How To Say No to People Making Demands on Your Time
2007-11-06 03:51:00
Are you overscheduled and overstressed? With today’s busy schedules, you’re not alone. One way to pare down your schedule is to get good at saying no to new commitments. Whether you say “yes” instead of no out of guilt, inner conflict, or a misguided notion that you can “do it all,” learning to say no to more requests can be one of the biggest favors you can do yourself and those you love. It helps reduce stress levels and gives you time for what’s really important. Difficulty: Easy Time Required: Very little. And it will free up time for what’s important! Here’s How: Just say, “I’m sorry. I can’t do this right now.” Use a sympathetic, but firm tone. If pressured as to why, reply that it doesn’t fit with your schedule, and change the subject. Most reasonable people will accept this as an answer, so if someone keeps pressuring you, they’re being rude, and it’s OK to just repeat, “I’m sorry, but this just doesn’t fit ...

Top 10 songs about food
2007-11-06 03:27:00
‘Woke up this morning, got kippers on my mind…’ If music be the love of food, Campbell Stevenson knows a song about it There may be any number of pop songs that mention food, but far fewer are the tracks that are actually about it. ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ does not concern itself with fruits, ‘Life on Mars’ is not about confectionery or Glasgow chip shops, you wouldn’t want to taste Frank Zappa’s ‘Burnt Weeny Sandwich’, and when Robert Plant asks you to ’squeeze my lemon’, he’s not in need of help preparing a dressing for his cous-cous. My contention, or sweeping generalisation, is that great food songs are made by people who know a bit about hunger or, in the case of New Orleans, people who come from a background where food and music have equal cultural importance. So this selection has a heavy bias towards the US South - to soul food, funk and gumbo from the mid-Sixties to mid-Seventies. With a...

Smoking doesn’t keep fat off
2007-11-05 09:53:00
A new Australian study debunking the myth that cigarettes keep weight down is a further warning about the dangers of smoking, an anti-smoking body says. The study, conducted by a research team from the University of New South Wales and the University of Melbourne, found people do not shed fat simply because they smoke. The research found smokers lost muscle mass, which gave them the appearance of being thinner, but the fat instead was stored around their vital organs. Mice were studied over seven weeks, with half exposed to smoke from four cigarettes a day for six days a week while the other half smoke free. Mice on the smoke diet ate about 23 per cent less but their fat mass kept to similar levels. Quit executive director Fiona Sharkie said today the study was a further warning to smokers they were endangering their health. It also blew their perception they were burning fat and staying thinner or losing weight, she said. “If you lose muscle it looks like you are losing more ...

Parents turn off TV as kids get active
2007-11-01 07:15:00
Parents are turning off the television and playing a more active role in raising their children than 10 years ago, according to new data released on Wednesday. The data from the U.S. Census Bureau also showed that parents are taking a more active role in the lives of their children. For example in 2004, 47 percent of teenagers were restricted in what they watched on television, when and for long, which was up from 40 percent in 1994. Among the 3- to 5-year-old set about 68 percent were limited in their television viewing, up from 54 percent, and 71 percent of children aged 6 to 11 faced restrictions, compared with 60 percent 10 years earlier. The findings was among 30 tables published Wednesday that addressed children’s living arrangements, family characteristics, academic experience, and so on. “Parents are more involved in general than they were 10 years ago,” bureau researcher Jane Dye told reporters. “They are more likely to be reading to their children, ...

Ancient Origins About Halloween
2007-10-31 09:08:00
Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the lon...

Top 10 things that tick American people off
2007-10-30 06:21:00
Americans get really annoyed when people drive badly, smoke in no-smoking zones, or don’t pick up after their dogs, but the rude behavior that bugs them most is workplace discrimination, according to a survey. A poll released Friday by the Civility Initiative at The Johns Hopkins University and the Jacob France Institute of the University of Baltimore found workplace offenses featured highly on the “Terrible Ten” list of rude behaviors. In the survey, 615 people from two companies in Baltimore and the University of Baltimore were asked to rank 30 examples of rude behavior ranging from text messaging when talking to someone, taking other people’s food from the office fridge, to snubbing people. Dr P M Forni, director of the initiative which promotes civility in the workplace and conducted the survey, said he was surprised discrimination topped the list above other more usual peeves in the workplace such as colleagues brushing their teeth in the water fountain,...

Elephants Tell You How To Discriminate Good People from Bad
2007-10-29 09:14:00
Elephants can apparently smell and see which humans might be out to get them, research now suggests. As elephants roam Amboseli National Park in Kenya within sight of famed Mt. Kilimanjaro, they may run afoul of members of the Maasai or Kamba tribes. While the Kamba nowadays threaten only elephants that invade their farmland, Maasai warriors occasionally show off their virility by spearing elephants. Since elephants face different levels of peril from people depending on their tribe, scientists reasoned elephants might use their senses to distinguish who might be dangerous. For instance, the pachyderms might rely on their eyesight—Maasai traditionally wear red shawls. The scientists also deduced that elephants might employ their keen sense of smell to distinguish Maasai from Kamba. Their body odors likely differ because Maasai eat substantial amounts of milk and occasionally cattle blood and beef while the Kamba diet consists of vegetables and maize, along with some meat. Also, u...

Monkeys will disappear In The Future? Primates in Danger of Extinction
2007-10-29 08:54:00
Almost a third of all apes, monkeys and other primates are in danger of extinction because of rampant habitat destruction, the commercial sale of their meat and the trade in illegal wildlife, a report released Friday said.   Of the world’s 394 primate species, 114 are classified as threatened with extinction by the World Conservation Union. The report by Conservation International and the International Primatological Society in Hainan, China, focuses on the plight of the 25 most endangered primates, including China’s Hainan gibbon, of which only 17 remain. “You could fit all the surviving members of the 25 species in a single football stadium; that’s how few of them remain on Earth today,” said Russell A. Mittermeier, president of Conservation International. “The situation is worst in Asia, where tropical forest destruction and the hunting and trading of monkeys puts many species at terrible risk,” said Mittermeier, who is also chairman of ...

11 Best Foods Men Should Eat Every Day
2007-10-24 18:56:00
Are you struggling to stay in shape? If you are struggling to get your body in top condition,Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen say there are 11 foods a man should eat every day—or nearly every day—to keep things running smoothly. Fruits and Vegetables Fruits and vegetables provide essential vitamins and minerals that will keep your body healthy. Foods rich in magnesium like beets, raisins, dates and soybeans are especially important because they’ll keep your bowels moving regularly. Dr. Roizen says a man should eat about five handfuls of fruits and vegetables a day. Fiber A man should shoot to get about 25 grams of fiber in his diet every day. You can reach this goal through foods like artichokes, lima beans, soybeans, grapefruit, certain berries and whole grains. Dr. Oz says that eating whole grains isn’t just the latest craze — they offer multiple benefits to health, including achieving proper poop. But first you need to read the label. When you’r...
Lack of sleep may raise women’s blood pressure
2007-10-23 11:01:00
Women who regularly get fewer than seven hours of sleep each night may have a higher risk of developing high blood pressure, a new study suggests. British researchers found that among more than 10,000 adults who were followed for five years, women who routinely slept for six hours or less were more likely than their well-rested counterparts to develop high blood pressure. Compared with women who said they typically got seven hours of sleep a night, those who logged in six hours were 42 percent more likely to develop high blood pressure, while those who routinely slept no more than five hours had a 31 percent higher risk. There was, however, no clear relationship between amount of sleep and blood pressure among men, the study authors report in the journal Hypertension. The findings suggest there may be a “gender-specific” relationship between sleep deprivation and high blood pressure, according to the researchers, led by Dr Francesco P Cappuccio of Warwick Medical School ...

Try It:Soya milk could keep a pot belly at bay
2007-10-23 10:59:00
soya shake a day could keep a pot belly at bay.Research shows that one soya-based drink a day can slash the amount of fat that accumulates across the stomach. Abdominal fat is particularly bad for health, raising the risk of heart attacks and diabetes more than fat found on other parts of the body. It is thought that soya, a vegetable protein, somehow interferes with the processing of excess sugar into fat. It is believed that soya, a vegetable protein, interferes with the processing of excess sugar into fat - helping to flatten out a pot belly. Previous studies have shown that soya and tofu, a meat substitute made from soya bean curd, cut the risk of ovarian cancer and heart disease. In the latest study, the researchers looked at the effect of soya supplements on the health of 15 women who had gone through the menopause. Nine were asked to drink a 120-calorie soya shake a day, while six were given a dummy shake to drink. After three months of daily shakes, there was little diffe...

online dating:find the romantic feeling
2007-10-17 17:27:00
The growing popularity of online dating services has brought with it a resurgence in old-fashioned courtship, the head of Australia’s most popular online dating service says. Male users on the online dating service RSVP tend to be the ones making the first move on prospective partners, the website’s general manager Hannah Schwartz said today. The Fairfax Media-owned dating service has over one million Australians on its database, with users ranging in age from 18 to over 80. RSVP users pay a fee to send a message to someone they are interested in, and Ms Schwartz believes men are generally the first to initiate an online conversation. “This is a very interesting observation,” Ms Schwartz said. “We do see a pattern where men are more likely to make the first move in the online environment. “I find this curious as you go now out to a pub or to a party and women are just as open about showing an interest in a man as a man is to a woman. “We are...

Beautiful But Deadly–The Top 10 Poisonous Plants
2007-10-17 08:56:00
No.10 Narcissus These cheerful yellow and white harbingers of spring, aka daffodils and jonquils, are actually mildly toxic if the bulbs are eaten in large quantities (Narcissus pseudonarcissus is shown). Some people confuse them for onions. Daffodil bulb diners tend to experience nausea, vomiting, cramps and diarrhea. A doctor might recommend intravenous hydration and/or drugs to stave off nausea and vomiting if symptoms are severe or the patient is a child. No.9 Rhododendron Rhododendrons and azalea bushes (a variety of rhododendron), with their bell-shaped flowers, look great in the yard come springtime, but the leaves are toxic and so is honey made from the flower nectar. Eating either from these evergreen shrubs makes your mouth burn, and then you’ll probably experienced increased salivation, vomiting, diarrhea and a tingling sensation in the skin.
