Halloween’s Top 10 Scary Creatures
2007-10-17 08:41:00
No.10 Goblins Made famous in fairy tales, the small and furry goblin is more mischievous than menacing. Legend tells of goblins hiding out in forests, pulling pranks and sometimes switching human babies for their own changeling spawn. Unlike some of the other creatures mentioned here and probably because of their disconnect from religion, goblins never quite crossed the threshold from the imaginary to cause real panic in medieval towns. No.9 Demons One of those all-encompassing terms for an “evil spirit,” a demon can represent anything from a malevolent ghost or fallen angel to a puppet of Satan. Like the notion of evil itself, they have ancient origins and appear in folklore and literature across the world. The demon that possessed Linda Blair in “The Exorcist” is probably pop culture’s most famous and most talented, with levitation capability, rotating head and amazing, life-like spewing action! N0.8 Gargoyles They’re one way to add a little fre...

Romania plan to sell Dracula’s Castle
2007-10-17 03:39:00
Lawmakers began debating whether the Transylvanian fortress commonly known as Dracula ’s Castle was legally returned to a North Salem architect and heir of Romania ’s royal family and whether he is allowed to sell it.     Bran Castle, which has been featured in many movies, was returned to Archduke Dominic Habsburg, the son of Princess Ileana, last year. The princess had been given the castle in exchange for good deeds done by the royal family, which ruled Romania since 1866.    The 14th-century castle was confiscated in 1948. Habsburg, 69, pledged to keep it open as a museum until 2009. He offered to sell it last year to local authorities for $80 million, but the offer was rejected because of the high price.    Opposition lawmaker Dumitru Ioan Puchianu said during a parliamentary debate that the return of the castle to Habsburg was illegal due to procedural errors. He said Habsburg is legally not allowed to sell it. Lawmakers ended the debate without vo...

Antioxidants and other vitamins can really counteract cancer?
2007-10-16 16:17:00
In an analysis of eight previous studies, researchers found no evidence that vitamins A, C, E or folate lower a person’s risk of lung cancer. Across the studies, which followed thousands of adults for up to16 years, people with the highest intakes of the vitamins were no less likely to develop lung cancer than those with the lowest intakes. There has been a popular notion that even smokers can ward off lung cancer by taking vitamin supplements, Dr. Eunyoung Cho, the lead author of the new report, told Reuters Health. This is not true, and our study confirmed that, said Cho, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical Schooland Brigham and Women Hospital in Boston. She and her colleagues report the findings in the International Journal of Cancer . Vitamins C and E are antioxidants, which means they help neutralize cell-damaging substances in the body called free radicals. Vitamin A and folate, a B vitamin, also help maintain normal, healthy cells. All of these vitamins hav...

Drinking wine every day is safe for pregnant women
2007-10-16 11:25:00
Drinking a small glass of wine every day is safe for pregnant women, a British health watchdog has suggested. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence’s (NICE) controversial new draft guidance contradicts the British government’s official advice which is for pregnant women and those trying to conceive to avoid alcohol altogether. The institute says pregnant women can safely consume up to 1.5 units of alcohol - the equivalent of a 125ml glass of wine or a 25ml measure of spirits - a day after the first three months of pregnancy. Its recommendation says there was “no consistent evidence” suggesting that small amount of alcohol damages unborn children. A NICE spokesman said the guidance was developed by experts who carried out a review of all available evidence on the risks facing pregnant women who drink alcohol. “The experts have concluded that there is no consistent evidence of adverse effects from low to moderate alcohol during pregnancy (less tha...

Putin arrives in Iran despite warning
2007-10-16 11:04:00
Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Tehran on Tuesday for a historic visit to hold talks on Iran ’s nuclear program and attend a Caspian sea summit. Russian President Vladimir Putin addresses the media during the Petersburg Dialogue, a regular Russian-German conference, in Wiesbaden, Germany, on Monday, Oct. 15, 2007. Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel met for a two-day bilateral summit. [Agencies] The visit, the first by a Kremlin leader since World War II, is taking place despite warnings of a possible assassination plot and amid hopes that a round of personal diplomacy could help offer a solution to an international standoff on Iran’s nuclear program. Putin’s trip was thrown into doubt when the Kremlin said Sunday that he had been informed by Russian special services that suicide attackers might try to kill him in Tehran, but he shrugged off the warning Monday during a visit to Germany. “Of course I am going to Iran,” he said aft...

Zoo Visitors Go Ape Over Gorillas
2007-10-15 15:01:00
A new gorilla compound has led to record visitor numbers at one of the UK’s top zoos. Big names among the visitors Thanks to the gorillas and their new rainforest exhibit, London Zoo is preparing to welcome its one millionth visitor of the year. This is the first time the zoo - which was founded in 1826 - has reached the one million mark in eight years. Now the management is hoping to attract more visitors than in any year since 1991, when 1.1 million came through the turnstiles. Last year, the attendance figure was 883,000. The lucky one millionth visitor - who is expected in a few days’ time - will be given a special tour behind the scenes and a free lunch. Zoo marketing manager James Bailey said: “Our rising visitor numbers are proof that we are doing things right. “We are very excited about welcoming the millionth visitor this year. “It’s a real milestone for us and someone is certainly going to have an extra special day out.” source...

Just 10 minutes of cellphone chat may trigger cancer
2007-10-15 09:52:00
Just 10 minutes of chatting on cellular phones is enough to trigger such chemical changes in the brain that can increase the risk of cancer, warn scientists. A study by the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel has shown that even low levels of radiation from handsets interfere with the process of cell division, which encourages the growth of tumors. Although the researchers have yet not found any evidence that signals from cell phones are harmful, their findings suggest they may be. Several studies have been conducted to find an association between mobile use and brain tumours, but they neither found any such link nor any dramatic rise in cancer rates. Ever since the inception of mobile phones, the official advice has been that the device are safe. The guidance is based on the assumption that the phones emit too little radiation to heat the brain dangerously. The new study, however, suggests that “nonthermal” radiation can pose a risk. In lab tests, the researchers ex...

Twenty-Five Years After Her Debut, Madonna Still Leads The Way
2007-10-15 09:46:00
The past couple of weeks have been really difficult for Madonna bashers. First, she garnered a nomination into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which earned an angry condemnation from some. Now, Madonna’s near signing of a $120 million dollardeal from Live Nation has rocked the industry. Some, like myself, believe this can end up to be the most significant music industry related event of the past twenty years. Yet, her critics are still trying to tell us how “irrelevant” she is, not realizing an artist 25 years into her career has never been given this type of deal before. While there certainly is a lot to criticize about Madonna’s likely deal, many bloggers have decided to criticize her hands, her age (something that is rarely seen among her male counterparts), her “baby buying,” her British accent, etc. It reminds me of when I was in Junior High school and everybody hated the smartest kid in the class because in reality, they were jealous of his success. Perhaps a legit...

Vote:Chinese women want to look more Caucasian
2007-10-14 14:36:00
Chinese women want to change the shape of their faces, while men want straighter noses, a recent survey by the Beijing-based Horizon Research Consultancy Group has found. The survey polled nearly 1,600 people aged 18 and 55 from Shanghai, Tianjin and Shenzhen. The results were given on the independent polling company’s website. Almost 33 percent of women wanted to improve the contours of their faces, the survey found. Eyelid surgery was second most popular at 29 percent. A face shaped like a goose egg and double eyelids were favorite, it showed. Fat removal from the stomach and waist ranked third, followed by liposuction of the legs. Nose sculpting came last among the top five most sought-after procedures for women. A Beijing-based cosmetic surgeon surnamed Huang said women wanted to look more Caucasian. They particularly wanted to look leggy, busty and skinny, he said. In comparison, men were less concerned about fat and only 7.5 percent would consider liposuction, the survey...

Life can be sweeter without sugar
2007-10-14 14:30:00
Giving up sweets and avoiding vitamins could help you live longer, according to German researchers. They found that restricting glucose – a simple sugar found in foods such as sweets that is a primary source of energy for the body – set off a process that extended the life span of some worms by up to 25 per cent. The key was boosting the level of “free radicals” – unstable molecules that can damage the body and which people often try to get rid of by consuming food or drinks rich in anti-oxidants such as vitamin E, they said in a study published in the journal Cell Metabolism. Restricting glucose first spurred the worms to generate more free radicals, but then they quickly built up long-lasting defences against them, said Michael Ristow, an endocrinologist at the University of Jena and the German Institute of Human Nutrition, who led the study. “During the process, the worm generates more free radicals, which activates defences against free radicals within t...

Jump in bed: Sex can help you stay healthy
2007-10-13 13:18:00
Sex is healthy for a relationship. Married couples who are satisfied with their sexual lives report better overall marital satisfaction. But can sex be healthy for you as an individual? Yes! Here’s how sex can keep you in better shape and put you in a better mood. Workout partner: Active sex is a good aerobic exercise, which is good for your heart. Sex also works out your stomach, back and buttock muscles, leading to greater pleasure with body esteem. Exercise on its own is also good for your mind. It relieves stress and elevates your mood, due to the release of endorphins. It is especially a workout for specific muscles, and for women, that means the vagina. Like other muscles, the vagina is a “use it or lose it” organ. The more you use your pelvic muscles, the more they stay in shape. And if you don’t use them, they will atrophy and sex can become painful. Pelvic muscles also affect bladder control. If your pelvic muscles are in shape, you will have better bladder control...

take care! sun exposure may be cause deadly cancer to kids
2007-10-13 13:06:00
Shade your kids. Strong new evidence suggests overall sun exposure in childhood, not just burns, is a big key to who later develops deadly skin cancer. The news comes as the government is finishing long-awaited rules to improve sunscreens. Until then, dermatologist Rigel has some advice: Use enough sunscreen. An adult needs the equivalent of a full shot glass, and a young child a good tablespoon-full. Most people put on too thin a coat to get good UVB coverage, much less whatever UVA protection a brand might offer. While official recommendations say wear at least an SPF-15 sunscreen daily, a super-high SPF will counter some of the thin-coat problem. Products with the ingredient Helioplex — a more sun-stable mix of the sunscreen ingredients avobenzone and oxybenzone — seem to provide longer-lasting UVA protection, although they can be more expensive. Another certified anti-UVA ingredient, Mexoryl, currently is sold only as a moisturizer. Apply sunscreen a half-hour before going ...

sushi and pizza, which one is more healthier?
2007-10-12 18:15:00
Think you’re taking the healthy option when you choose sushi for your lunch? Think again, according to food writer Trevor Corson.Researching the history of sushi and its rising popularity in the United States, Corson found the popular belief that sushi is better for you than pizza is not always true. In fact a sushi takeout box at an American supermarket could easily contain as many calories as two slices of pizza, and the sushi rolls served in restaurants are often worse. “What we think of as sushi in the United States has become Americanised and that involves more fatty ingredients while the rice tends to be sweet,” Corson told Reuters in an interview. “There is a lot of sugar, carbohydrates and sodium in the rice and then there is the issue with fish - as when you eat fish anywhere - you have to be concerned about mercury.” Exposing the myth about sushi always being healthy was just one of the surprises that Corson came across as he researched his b...

In the last 10 years,British women’s waistlines have grown by 2 inche
2007-10-12 18:10:00
The average woman’s waistline has grown by 2 inches in 10 years, all thanks to the sedentary lifestyle. A study conducted by Cancer Research UK scientists found that the average waistline has increased from 31.8 inches to 33.5 inches. Men are also nowhere behind the fairer sex, for the research found that the average man’s waistline has grown by 1.4 inches to 38 inches. “We know high body weight increases the risk of a number of cancers and it is important we get this message out to as many people as possible,” the Daily Mail quoted Dr Lesley Walker, of Cancer Research UK, as saying. “A healthy diet with plenty of fiber, fruit and vegetables, as well as regular exercise can help people lose weight and reduce their risk of cancer,” he added. The trend was found to be dominant in the under 45s, where the proportion of men with a body mass index over 35, and of women with a BMI of over 40, has grown two-fold during the decade. Lead researcher Professor Jane Wardle s...

‘Smart bra’ to help detect breast cancer
2007-10-12 13:15:00
Soon, a bra, universally used to provide support and comfort to the breasts, might offer health benefits, for scientists at the University of Bolton are developing a bra that can detect if the person wearing it is suffering from early-stage breast cancer. Experts working on the “smart” bra say that it will be able to spot cancer before a tumor can develop and spread. Professor Elias Siores, inventor of the bra, who works in the Centre for Research and Innovation at the University of Bolton, also claims that the undergarment will be able to assess the effectiveness of any breast cancer treatment its wearer is undergoing. “It could emit two warnings, audible or visual or both. If the warning persists, you would see a specialist,” Discovery News quoted Siores, as saying. The smart bra works by using a microwave antennae system, which can easily be woven into fabric. The antennae pick up any abnormal temperature changes in the breast tissue, which are linked to brea...

Would you marry robots?human being or robots which one is your choice
2007-10-12 10:39:00
A British scientist has been awarded a doctorate for a paper predicting that humans will one day marry robots. Maastricht University awarded David Levy a PhD for a thesis entitled Intimate Relationships with Artificial Partners. Mr Levy wrote: “Trends in robotics and shifting attitudes on marriage are likely to result in sophisticated robots that will eventually be seen as suitable marriage partners. The thesis examines human attitudes toward affection, love and sexuality and concluded that the findings are just as applicable to human interaction with robots of the future as they are to relationships between humans of today. It was based on about 450 publications in the fields of psychology, sexology, sociology, robotics, materials science, artificial intelligence, gender studies and computer-human interaction. source:Ananova

9 children killed in US raid in Iraq
2007-10-12 04:46:00
BAGHDAD - A US attack killed 19 insurgents and 15 civilians, including nine children, northwest of the capital Thursday - one of the heaviest civilian death tolls in an American operation in recent months. The military said it was targeting senior leaders of al-Qaida in Iraq . American forces have applied fierce and determined pressure on militants, especially al-Qaida in Iraq, since the full contingent of additional US troops arrived June 15. But Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has recently confronted top American commander Gen. David Petraeus about what he sees as overly aggressive US tactics that harm innocent civilians, according to Iraqi officials. The military statement detailing Thursday’s air and ground assault said soldiers were acting on intelligence reports about an al-Qaida meeting in the Lake Tharthar region. The southern reaches of the big, man-made lake are about 50 miles northwest of the capital. The American account said US surveillance confirmed “activit...

Pay Attention For Your Breakfast,Is Important For Your Health
2007-10-11 11:12:00
Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. As the saying goes, Have a king’s breakfast, have a common people’s lunch, and a beggar’s dinner. But according to a survey done by Life Style, a Beijing newspaper, most office workers don’t follow this advice and instead avoid breakfast and have big dinner. What do they have for breakfast? Example 1: Sandwich made with an egg, a slice of ham, a tomato slice and some cheese. Example 2: A Chinese traditional stuffed bun with a bowl of porridge Example 3: Chinese pancake from peddler Example 4: KFC breakfast Example 5: Soybean milk and deep-fried fluffy dough sticks from Yonghe King Restaurant Those are the breakfast descriptions of some office workers who participated in the survey. But breakfast cannot be a last minute decision. You don’t have to spend too much on it, but have as much nutritious food as you can. Some people prefer a western breakfast over a traditional Chinese one. What’s the diffe...

Chinese girl teach you the Tips before wearing a bikini
2007-10-11 11:03:00
With the opening of China’s economy, women are also becoming more open about showing their bodies, and they can do it with bikinis in the summer.   This swimwear is becoming popular among Chinese girls. But before wearing a bikini, there are a few things women need to know before donning a bikini.   Many women will try to lose weight before wearing a bikini. Yet fashion experts say that in order to look attractive in a bikini, the following eight things are more important than weight.   Tip 1: The color of your skin means much more than the color of the bikini you wear.   According to a survey conducted by an international fashion magazine, tanned looking skin is more attractive to men than perfect body curves on beaches. So when going to the beach, apply foundation darker than the one you use in office.   Or you can apply self-tanning products which are water-proof and can give the appearance of darker the skin. The “tan” will fade in three to sev...

Why people always go to Mexico for travelling?what it’s allure you
2007-10-11 08:51:00
Mexico was named on Thursday as the best place in the world to retire by an annual retirement index, replacing last year’s winner Panama where real estate prices have soared.Releasing its 15th annual global retirement index, International Living magazine said Mexico had jumped four places to top the list due to “an affordable combination of modern features and old-world charm.” The report analyzes 29 countries, and gives them scores in categories including real estate, entertainment, special benefits offered to retirees, culture, safety and stability, healthcare, climate, infrastructure and cost of living. “Moving to Mexico means you can still have all of the amenities you grew accustomed to north of the border: cable TV, high-speed Internet, and modern home appliances,” said the magazine’s managing editor Laura Sheridan in a statement. Mexico also won praise for its health care, diverse climate and affordable real estate. The magazine, which cate...

What Is The Gold-diggers wanted
2007-10-11 08:46:00
When the water from melting mountain snow slows to a shallow trickle in autumn, villagers in the Svaneti region of northwest Georgia lock up their cows and hike up to the river to prospect for gold.Village teacher Roland Khvibliani draws a cloth across his small wooden trough and lays it on the bed of the Engury river to catch what he can of the tiny gold flakes floating downstream. Gold prices have almost tripled since 2001, but that is of little concern to him: he is performing a ritual that his ancestors carried out for centuries before him. Georgian historians believe it also inspired the Greek myth of the Golden Fleece. In that myth, Jason and the Argonauts sailed across the Black Sea to the Kingdom of Kolchis — what is today the coast of western Georgia. The golden fleece bestowed with regal powers was the equivalent of Khvibliani’s cloth: centuries ago local people would dip sheep fleeces into the river to catch floating particles of gold, then hang them glistenin...

Salt is a good medicine for healing
2007-10-10 05:04:00
Salt is essential not only to life, but to good health. It is much more useful than just an added flavor to your food. It is cheap and extremely accessible as compared to massage oils used at high-class beauty salons, it is probably the reason why salt has become so popular for women obsessed with trying anything to improve their looks, especially since it costs next to nothing. The World Heal th Organization’s independent research report on diet and chronic disease has suggested a daily intake of salt for adults should be reduced from six grams to five. Less salt is suggested as one of the measure to counter cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and obesity, according to the report. It appears that more salt could be used for physical treatments like salt massages ?it’s definitely not just for flavor anymore. Good news for salt massage lovers. Here are some things you may want to try. Salt massage for physical disorders Salt massages work for both skin disorders and ot...

Do you know:Women don’t talk more than guys
2007-10-10 04:51:00
Another stereotype - chatty gals and taciturn guys - bites the dust. Turns out, when you actually count the words, there isn’t much difference between the sexes when it comes to talking. A team led by Matthias R. Mehl, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Arizona, came up with the finding, which is published in Friday’s issue of the journal Science. The researchers placed microphones on 396 college students for periods ranging from two to 10 days, sampled their conversations and calculated how many words they used in the course of a day. The score: Women , 16,215. Men, 15,669. The difference: 546 words: “Not statistically significant,” say the researchers. “What’s a 500-word difference, compared with the 45,000-word difference between the most and the least talkative persons” in the study, said Mehl. Co-author James W. Pennebaker, chairman of the psychology department at the University of Texas, said the researchers coll...

Cold virus may be used in fight against cancer
2007-10-07 17:01:00
British scientists who have genetically engineered a virus which normally causes heavy colds so that it attacks cancer believe it could yield a new way to fight the disease. Cancer researchers think engineered viruses will have advantages over many existing types of chemotherapy because they will be more targeted to attacking tumours and so cause fewer side effects. At the moment, most chemotherapies harm both cancerous and non-cancerous cells, leading to hair loss and nausea. The modified adenovirus exploits what Lawrence Young, who is leading the research project at the University of Birmingham, calls the cancer cell’s “achilles heel”. “It’s a little molecular switch [on the cell’s surface],” he said. “If you switch it on it does two things - it induces the cells to die, but it also provokes the body’s immune response to destroy the cancer. So it is a double whammy.” The team are not sure why the switch is there or why it...

Don’t hate us because we’re beautiful
2007-10-07 16:56:00
Beauty is one of society’s most highly prized assets: good looks mean more money, popularity and success. It’s also big business: the UK health and beauty market is worth a staggering £7.4 billion. But, as the bevy of gorgeous ones testify here, beauty can also be a curse. Is it the last taboo? Do I think I’m beautiful? Emphatically not. I scrub up all right, possess a certain sleight of hand, can ‘pass’ as they say in transvestite circles. However, even this mere passing embroils me in situations that it is impossible to talk about without sounding like an arse - and, believe me, I am clenching said feature as I type. Friends routinely remark upon the attention that I draw in public. Heinously unphotogenic as I am, in the flesh the way I look elicits extreme responses: transfixed pleasure from babies; adulation from the camper gay man; instant, hackles-raised hostility from certain women. One apologised for her tirade on meeting me - ‘It was you...

Astronomers see ’second Earth’ in the making
2007-10-05 16:30:00
Astronomers have spotted evidence of a second Earth being built around a distant star 424 light-years away. Using NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, astronomers have spotted a huge belt of warm dust swirling around a young star called HD 113766 that is just slightly larger than our sun. The dust belt, which scientists suspect is clumping together to form planets, is located in the middle of the star system’s terrestrial habitable zone where temperatures are moderate enough to sustain liquid water. Scientists estimate there is enough material in the belt to form a Mars-sized world or larger. At approximately 10 million years old, the star is just the right age for forming rocky planets, the researchers say. Their finding will be detailed in an upcoming issue of Astrophysical Journal. “The timing for this system to be building an Earth is very good,” said study team member Carey Lisse, of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Baltimore, Md. ...

preventing early childhood obesity.”Mothers are often blamed for their children’s obesity, but this study suggests that for more effective prevention perhaps we should focus on the whole family,” Prof Wake said. The results also showed that 40 percent of these young mothers and more than 60 percent of the young fathers were themselves overweight or obese. The research, to be presented at a paediatrics conference in Toronto this week, compared the BMIs of four- and five-year-olds with their parents’ parenting styles. The specialists said it was vital to study early parenting because home life often established patterns for life-long obesity. Earlier research had shown that childhood obesity was highly stable during the primary school years, right from school entry, Prof Wake said. “For instance, the BMI of a prepgrade child has an 85 percent correlation with their BMI three years later,” she said. “Obese school children are very likely to bec...
