Love at first sight, or in half a second
2007-10-04 17:36:00
Disbelievers in love at first sight may have to think again because new research shows it only takes half a second to decide if someone is attractive and a potential mate. “The study gets at the basic perceptual aspects in mating,” said psychologist Jon Maner, of Florida State University, who headed the team. “It shows how quickly, strongly and automatically people are attuned to physical attractiveness whether looking for mates or guarding their mates from potential rivals,” he added in an interview. Maner and his team, who published their findings in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, discovered that people tend to fixate on attractive faces within the first half-second of seeing them before sizing them up as a possible mate or rival. In the study university students were shown pictures of very attractive or average-looking people for one second before being asked to look at something else. By measuring people’s reaction time, Maner an...

Keep healthy when traveling
2007-10-03 20:03:00
The National Day holiday is a time for trips. Many people go to travel agencies and ask them arrange itineraries, so that people don’t have to spend much time and energy working out travel details. Yet despite how meticulous travel agents may be, there are always some things people need to look after themselves to ensure a pleasant and safe journey. For your reference, here are some things you should consider before traveling: *What diseases to look out for While China covers a vast geographic area, with various mountains and rivers, these grand landscapes are not suitable for all people. High altitudes, cold sea water and pollen can prevent certain groups of people to visiting these areas. People with acute otitis media (inflammation of the middle ear), coronary heart disease, angina and seriously high or low blood pressure as well as pregnant women are advised to stay away from high mountains, because high altitude sickness could pose a serious physical challenge to these pe...

How do women choose Mr Right: It’s in his kiss
2007-10-03 13:07:00
Winning a first kiss is enough of a challenge for most male suitors. But getting the act itself right may be even more important - because apparently it can determine whether a relationship blooms. According to scientists, women often judge men exclusively on the quality of the first kiss. According to scientists, women often judge men exclusively on the quality of the first kiss. Above: Andie MacDowell and Hugh Grant in Four Weddings and a FuneralThe pressure to perform, they say, rests mainly with men, because women have developed kissing as an evolutionary tool to find the right father for their children. The research into the psychology of kissing uncovered a “complicated exchange of information” during a kiss. Tongue contact and the exchange of saliva were found to help both sexes make subconscious assessments about each other. Women ’s breath can indicate hormone levels and fertility, while male saliva will have traces of the sex hormone testosterone. Bad bre...

Can’t quit chocolate? Don’t worry about it
2007-10-03 13:04:00
Resistance is futile. The more we try to fight off a craving for chocolate, the more our desire for it grows, a British researcher has said. But chocoholics can take heart that such sweets are not addictive despite the fact many people consider themselves as having no control over their urges to eat the sweets, said Peter Rogers, a psychologist at the University of Bristol. “Food behaviour can look like addictive behaviour in extreme situations but chocolate does not fit these criteria,” Rogers told a meeting sponsored by the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Many people point to certain compounds found in chocolate – such as phenylethylamine – that produce a buzz when they reach the brain as evidence chocolate is addictive, Rogers said. But many of these compounds also exist in higher concentrations in other foods with less appeal, such as avocados or cheese, and do not cause addiction despite what many chocoholics believe, he said. Instead, a soci...

Men are smarter than women ,but…
2007-09-28 16:36:00
Men have always believed that they are smarter than women. Now, a study has found that while this is certainly true, men also have to deal with the fact that they are also more stupid than the fairer sex. In the study, scientists measured the IQ of 2500 brothers and sisters and they found an uneven number of men not only in the top two pct, but also in the bottom two pct. The study’s participants were tested on science, maths, English and mechanical abilities. Though there were twice as many men as women in the smartest group, there were also twice as many men among the dolts. The aggregate scores of men and women were similar. One of the study’s authors, psychology professor Timothy Bates, said that the phenomenon may be because men have always been expected to be high achievers and women have been restricted to spend time taking care of their home. “The female developmental program may be tilted more towards ensuring survival and the safety of the middle ground.,...

Bee-man-show stuns onlookers
2007-09-26 09:17:00
A professional beekeeper stunned onlookers by performing an unusual “bee-man show”, letting thousands upon thousands of bees creep all over his body, on Monday in a village near Siping, Jilin Province in Northeast China. Once considered as a consummate skill among beekeepers, the “bee-man show”, which demonstrates the beekeeper’s control over his pets, has become a lost tradition in many parts of China. The performer, Hou Dongming, 33, is a local beekeeper in Siping’s Pingxi County. Hou said that he learned the skill from his father, Hou Wanfu, 60, who can also perform the stunning show, New Culture View reports. Hou sat still among dozens of beehives, wearing a hat, a pair of black swimming goggles and tightly-sealed trousers. In addition, his upper body was naked, and his nostrils and ear holes stuffed with soft paper. Besides this attire, a necklace with a small cage, in which a queen bee was kept, was tied around his neck. The queen bee e...

2525 BC - Battle between Lagash and Umma By 3000 BC, the Sumerians had developed into the earliest civilization of Mesopotamia.
