Vitamin supplements may increase risk of death
2008-04-22 09:44:00
Vitamin supplements taken by millions of people do not increase life expectancy and may raise the risk of a premature death , according to a review of 67 studies with more than 230,000 subjects. The review, by the Cochrane Collaboration which regularly pools data from trials to evaluate drugs and treatments, found supplements vitamin A, vitamin E and beta-carotene are detrimental to health. In 47 trials with 180,938 people and a low risk of bias, the “antioxidant supplements significantly increased mortality”, the authors wrote. When the antioxidants were assessed separately and low risk of bias trials were included and selenium excluded, vitamin A was linked to a 16% increased risk of dying, beta-carotene to a 7% increased risk and vitamin E to a 4% increased risk. Evidence for vitamin C and selenium was more equivocal, suggesting there was no benefit to taking these pills compared with a placebo. “The bottom line is current evidence does not support the use of an...

Deadly Meal:5 deadly food you eat everyday
2008-04-22 09:31:00
Everyone are taught since young that you can’t just pluck any mushroom you see in the woods as it might be poisonous and deadly. Even though a Blowfish (Fufu) may look really cute and delicious in the sea, you still need a licensed chef to prepare it for you, simple because it’s 1200 times more toxic then cyanide. However, there are some food out there, though commonly eaten by us, contains toxic that may cause harm when it’s not prepared properly. Here’s a list of 5 I’ve found on the net.. Potatoes. Potatoes contain glycoalkaloids (solanine and chaconine). Cooking at high temperatures mostly removes the toxin, although headaches, diarrhea, and cramps—and in severe cases, coma and death—can occur in rare cases. Ever wonder why we’re told to keep potatoes away from light? It’s to prevent higher concentrations of solanine. So don’t eat potatoes after they have turned green. Tomato. Although the fruit itself is safe (more technically a berry), ...

Top 10 Holiday Gift Picks for Tea and Coffee Lovers
2007-12-13 09:49:00
As an avid coffee and tea drinker, I am well acquainted with the joy of small things. Nothing quite satisfies like that first mug of morning joe, or cozying up with a hot cup of tea on a cold night. Given the enormous growth in the beverage industry, I know I am not alone in my fondness for these infusions. So, here are some of my top picks (in no particular order) for this year’s wish list. Perhaps your favorite coffee or tea drinker would enjoy these in their daily imbibing as well. Tea Lover Top Gift Pick # 10: The Sorapot Sorapot First up for the ultra mod kitchen is the Sorapot. Designed by Joey Roth, this modern teapot combines simple and stylish design with function. The glass body is removable for easy cleaning, and all of its components are fully recyclable. This teapot allows the user to sink deeper into the ancient art of tea making - the tea drinker gets to watch the leaves unfurl as they steep, bringing the visual sense to the process, and deepening one’s ap...

Unbelievable?have lots of children could make you live to 100 year old
2007-12-10 16:42:00
Ever wondered how some people touch the 100-year milestone? Well, that’s because they have lots of children, take up farming and stay trim but not thin, according o scientists. Husband and wife team Leonid and Natalia Gavrilov, from the Centre on Ageing at the University of Chicago looked at the health records of dozens of centenarians to determine why they had lived so long. They found that not eating too much, but also not eating too little, was the crucial factor behind longevity, as was having more than four children by the age of 30 and working on the land. “This study provides the first estimates of height, body build and other vital characteristics for the future centenarian,” the Telegraph quoted Leonid and Natalia, as saying. The couple will reveal the details of their findings to a meeting of the Gerontological Society of America in San Francisco next week. The study involved analyzing the records of 171 men born in 1887 who reached the age of 100. “Our...

Stay married:divorce is bad for environment
2007-12-10 16:38:00
Irked spouses looking for a reason to stay married were offered a novel rationale by U.S. researchers on Monday: divorce is bad for the environment. The global trend toward higher divorce rates has created more households with fewer people, scientists at Michigan State University reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. More households means more energy expended to build, fuel, and provide water for them, the researchers wrote. “Globally, the number of households is increasing much faster than the number of people,” said co-author Jianguo “Jack” Liu in a telephone interview. “Even in regions with declining population, we see substantial increase in the number of households. Divorce is the main reason for reducing the number of people in a household,” he said. The average divorced person’s household is about 40 to 50 percent smaller than the average married person’s household, Liu said. But whether there are thre...

Some Amazing Facts About Ladybirds - Beautiful and useful
2007-12-06 14:58:00
We usually detest insects, but this one is amongst our favorites. Ladybirds are beautiful, but for reputed gardeners they are also very useful. Why? Because their food is made almost entirely of plant lice, small soft bodied insects that invade garden plants and crops. Ladybirds eat plant lice both as adult and larva. A sole ladybird eats thousands of plant lice during its lifetime, but also other damaging insects. Some ladybirds also eat fungi attacking the plants. At the end of the 19th century, Iceria puchasi, a species of Australian plant lice, ruined the citrus fruits in California. The pest bred so quickly that it threatened to destroy all the citrus plantations in the area. An entomologist traveled to Australia to look for its enemy. This was a ladybird: Rodolia cardinalis. 500 individuals were brought to California and in about one year the lice were almost gone. Most ladybirds do not bypass 12 mm in length, no matter if round or oval-shaped. The delicate rear flight wings ...

10 Funny Product About Boobs
2007-11-26 10:14:00
Boob products?! Yes, this is an article about fun boob gadgets and products. If you are too young or too prudish to handle this, go and read something else. Love boobs? I certainly do. Love them. Love them. Love them. If I could, I would spend all of my days lounging around under a palm tree, eating fried chicken breasts and playing with boobs. Sadly, life is not like that. It’s hard for a man to spend his whole day surrounded by boobs… since by boobs, I don’t mean the idiots I work and live with. So, to make life more enjoyable for my fellow men, I came up with the brilliant idea of finding the way that a man could play with breasts all day long and still get stuff done. So here are my picks for the 10 Fun Ways to Play with Boobs: 10. Speeders Beware of the charger
2007-11-26 10:02:00
For quite a while, the Ford Crown Victoria has had a firm grip on the Law Enforcement car of choice. Chevrolet has also gotten a handful of bids with the Impala. Now, they have some competition from the Chrysler corp, and the challenger is a Charger , no pun intended. Michigan State Police Test Vehicle Several Police Agencies are currently testing the Charger, along with the Crown Victoria and Impala. Although the Charger isn’t an immediate threat, it has been steadily gaining popularity, mostly from national testing which praises it’s handling and speed. “We’ve been steadily gaining market share and acceptance for the police vehicle since its inception,” said Chrysler LLC spokeswoman Shawn Morgan. “We see that trend continuing.” When designing a car for Police action, automakers have to engineer the vehicle to withstand more than your typical daily driver. It will be acting as the officers transportation obviously, but it will also be their ...

Tree man ‘who grew roots’ may be cured
2007-11-20 16:45:00
home village south of the capital Jakarta claims to have identified his condition, and proposed a treatment that could transform his life. After testing samples of the lesions and Dede’s blood, Dr Anthony Gaspari of the University of Maryland concluded that his affliction is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), a fairly common infection that usually causes small warts to develop on sufferers. Dede’s problem is that he has a rare genetic fault that impedes his immune system, meaning his body is unable to contain the warts. The virus was therefore able to “hijack the cellular machinery of his skin cells”, ordering them to produce massive amounts of the substance that caused the tree-like growths known as “cutaneous horns” on his hands and feet. Dede’s counts of a key type of white blood cell are so low that Dr Gaspari initially suspected he may have the Aids virus. But tests showed he did not, and it became clear that Dede’s immune condition was something far ra...

Junk Food Boosts Boob Size in Younger Generations
2007-11-18 14:51:00
This is scientifically proven: women, at least in the western world, are getting bigger breasts with each generation. A new report made by Daily Mail states that on average, British women have passed in just 10 years from bra size 34B to 36C. This has forced lingerie companies to come with stocks of GG, H, HH and J-cup bras for the first time, and even 3 different K-cup bras. It appears that the next generations will see a lot of ‘Pamela Andersons’ on the streets, only that the boobs will be natural. It’s easy to think that it’s all due to silicone implants: indeed, women aged 21-30 age appeal to breast augmentation in 60 % of the cases, compared to just 7 % undergoing breast reduction. But these women form a small percentage of the overall. Of course, women experience natural fluctuations of breast size: boobs grow in the week before the period, due to hormonal changes. Contraceptive pills too boost breast size. In the end, they are just mixes of hormones. “There ...

Homosexuality - a Basic Behavior of the Humans’ Ancestors
2007-11-18 14:39:00
Homosexuality is regarded as being unnatural, but that’s a paradox: nature abounds in examples of homosexual behavior in animals. Various explanations have attempted to explain homosexuality in both humans and animals. Some researches point that genes conferring homosexuality in men could deliver more fertile female offspring and the genes that confer high masculinity can produce lesbian female offspring. Vice versa, genes of high femininity can render homosexual male offspring. One hypothesis suggests that males can sometimes gain support in a pack by having homosexual contact, increasing their chances of copulating females. When a species is mostly bisexual, homosexual relationships allow an easier way to join a pack. Homosexual sex can sometimes train infants for adult sexual roles. It appears clearly now that for many species, like in humans, mating may not have a necessarily reproductive role. And observations made on our closest relatives, monkeys and apes, could explai...

4 Right Ways For Shaving
2007-11-17 15:44:00
The hair fiber has in its composition keratin and some derived proteins. The protein has a fibrous structure, which also enters in the composition of feathers, nails, hoofs, and horns. Of all the hair growing on the human body, the beard has the toughest and most resistant fibers, being as hard to cut off like copper fiber of similar thickness. There are no less than 25,000 fibers, on average, in the human beard, which grow about 0.5 millimeters in 24 hours. This is how you should use a shaving blade: 1. Soaking the beard. The only way to soak well all the facial hair consists in rinsing the face with a lot of warm water. If it’s possible, shave after taking a shower, as during the shower, the hot water softens the beard. 2. Products’ application before shaving. All the shaving soaps, foams, creams and gels realize in fact three things: retain water in the hair fiber, maintain the hair fibers straight and oint the skin so that the blade slides easier. Choose the product that c...

15 Things You Didn’t Know About Women
2007-11-16 11:02:00
15. Women have inverted nipples. Yep, just as belly-buttons come in “innie” and “outie” variations, so do nipples. According to Breast Health Online, roughly 2% of women have at least one inverted nipple that points inward. This condition makes breast feeding difficult or impossible, and many women get nipple repair surgery to remedy the problem for aesthetic reasons. 14. Women don’t have to feel quite so guilty about ordering that second margarita. Call it liquor luck, but a study in the Journal of Labor Research found that women who drink alcohol earn 14% more than their teetotaler counterparts. That may be attributed to happy hour networking and corporate schmoozing, so don’t use it as an excuse to get sloshed before your 10am meeting. 13. Childbirth freaks them out. If gory slasher flicks don’t faze you but the hospital scenes in TLC’s “A Baby Story” do, you might be tokophobic. This condition refers to women who ar...

Inflammation Can’t Explain Depression’s Link to Heart Disease
2007-11-16 09:49:00
Depression is known to hike the risk of cardiovascular disease, but don’t put all the blame on any concurrent rise in inflammation. So concludes a study led by Dr. Viola Vaccarino, a professor of medicine at Emory University, in Atlanta. That means that it’s back to the drawing board in terms of unraveling the depression-heart disease link, according to Vaccarino. “That depression is a factor in cardiovascular disease is clear. What is not clear is what kind of mechanism is involved,” she said. The Emory group, as well as researchers from five other medical institutions, studied the possible role of inflammation in a group of 559 women who were referred for heart tests because of blockage in a coronary artery. All the women had a standard test for depression at the start of the study and were followed for an average of about six years. They were divided into three groups on the basis of those tests: those who clearly were depressed by diagnosis and previous tr...
