Fuzzapalooza, our annual night out on the town to celebrate the birthday of Tom D. (aka - Fuzz), was held last night and was once again a smashing success.    Fuzz is a special guy and I've been lucky to know him since we were both kids.  His aunt lived two houses down from ours but that's not why I knew Thomas.  It seemed back then that everyone knew Fuzz and it still seems that way today.  Fuzz is what most people would call mentally handicapped but knowing him has made me see the error in any label like that.  Thomas has got more going for him than most people. Like I said, Thomas knows everyone and everyone knows Thomas, so all night long people were stopping and talking to him at every stop that we made on our tour.  Everyone that he talks to is always smiling at the end of the conversation.  It is amazing to watch but he just seems to have the ability to brighten up peoples lives with ...

Now that the holidays are over we can all take a deep breath and relax a little bit.  Still locked in the grip of winter's deep freeze, though, I have to admit that I'm starting to get a little touch of cabin fever.  The football season is close to being over so I'm trying to soak up as much as I can to last me until August, but it's more than just that.  I think what's got me going a little stir crazy is the need for some golf. I cleaned up and organized my garage this last weekend and in doing so I pulled my golf clubs down off the wall.  Just touching the bag made me want to throw them in the back of the car and head out to the links.  Since then I've been going nuts knowing that we are 3 - 4 months away from being able to go out and smack it around.  At least here in Iowa we are anyway.  For those of you in warmer parts of the country I am totally jealous. January 1st.  Forget about your resolutions that you made last night for one more day.  Today is a day for friends, food, drinks & college football.  It doesn't get any better than this.  I guess it could be better if the Hawkeyes were in a bowl game instead of at home watching on TV like me.  Still, this is the day that college football rules!   It's not like it used to be though.  Back before the BCS all of the big bowl games were on today.  You could get carpal tunnel from changing the remote so much because you didn't want to miss anything.  Now you've got some minor bowls that make themselves out to be bigger just because they are on New Year's Day.  Still got the Grand-daddy of them all...The Rose Bowl.  Can't say that I'm a big Illinois fan, or Ron Zook fan, but I have to pull for the Big 10 during bowl season.  Haven't been a fan of the Zooker since Iowa played Florida in the Outback Bowl and Zook didn...

Christmas is over.  New Year's is here.  The holiday season is winding down.  For most adults this is a welcome relief, but for most kids it's sort of depressing.  I have to admit that I fall into the latter category.  Depressed that the holidays are over not the kid part.  OK, maybe I am still just a little bit of a kid yet.  But to me, the holidays being over is on par with football season being over.  They both make you just a little bit sad.  I can remember as a kid after Christmas the questions that we used to get from everyone were always the same.  Did you get everything you wanted from Santa?  Was Santa good to you?  And for the most part the answer was always yes, but every year there was always one gift that wasn't what you had asked for or that maybe even a gift that kind of sucked.  Underwear, socks or pajamas come to mind.   My parents always did everything that they could to get us what we ha...

Ralphie Parker, the main character from the classic A Christmas Story, would have been jealous but I didn't have to beg for my Red Ryder BB Gun when I was a kid. I don't even remember asking for one, or when I even got my BB gun, I just always had one growing up. I never shot my eye out either, which was a good thing. There was one Christmas present that I do remember having to beg for. Actually it was more like beg, whine, cry, plead...you get the idea. That toy? A Star Wars Death Star play set. My little brother and I already had all of the action figures and ships and this was the coolest thing that I had ever seen.
