I recently heard of a certain ACM Inter Collegiate Programming Contest being held in Tokyo, Japan from my C++ tutor. The thought of hundreds of hardcore programmers descending to fight code it out to decide who is yer daddy! was increnerdily cool.Every team was given 8 problems and they were required to solve them within a certain time period. The winning team from Warsaw University managed to solve all 8!Going through the list of rankings, I saw that IIT Madras was the only Indian university which made it to the final standings. They solved 3 problems. For a non-programmer like me, that is still an amazing score.Looking at the bottom of the page, I saw that NIT Trichi and IIT Bombay were among those which received 'Honorable Mention'.And I thought India was an IT superpower. A man in his 30's physically assaults and robs a 101 year old woman for money? And how much of it: US $33. Plus her house keys. The woman suffered a fractured cheekbone. She uses a walker to walk.So just how pathetic is that man? To have lived an entire century is by itself worthy of respect. If you really have to mug, at least do it with some integrity. I watch American Idol results everyweek. For one damn reason: Sanjaya Mala kar. Why? Because he is of Indian origin. And its just so fun to watch him and his hair on American Idol!And of course he can sing. Or can he?After steppin' out with the baby, his path to American Idol-dom had already taken a hit. But nevermind. People still adored him enough to vote for him to stay.This week, his rendition of 'Ain't no mountain high enough' really didn't cut it. I cringe whenever I hear the adjective God gifted.Firstly, it is because of my personal beliefs regarding the notion of God. I know it's pretty odd to review a film when it has been released 2 months ago. But hell, people review Citizen Kane even up to this day so what's wrong with me writing my views (on my blog, mind you) about a movie I only watched a week ago. So here we go:I had been following all the news regarding Guru even before it was released. It didn't interest me much. Struck me as a period film set in the then newly independent India. I also heard Mallika Sherawat was in the film. A Mani Ratnam film with her! I thought that is he that desperate for a hit Hindi film that he can incorporate the curvaceously wooden "actress" in the script? Also, when I heard the movie resembles the story of Dhirubhai Ambani, I was really put off. I mean, since when did Indian business tycoons became a subject to make a movie on? The 2007 Cricket World Cup begins tomorrow, bringing with it nearly 6 weeks of cricketing joy. A considerable number of people will be comletely immersed in the eclectic frenzy that cricket is, especially in the Indian Subcontinent. Where cricket is one of the supposedly great British colonial inheritances, along with English and the Railways, of course. A thousand apologies if I have left anything out:)While I do not know how to play cricket, and never really have (OMG! An Indian who can't play cricket! That's sacrilege, na?), I do love to watch good cricket because there is no sport as exciting, yet amazingly technical, as Cricket when a great match is being played. Especially when it is India vs. Pakistan, my PCness be damned for a moment, where the sheer tension alone makes it one of the top sporting spectacles. No other sport, not even Soccer, can match the excitement of a 1 ball, 1 run situation. Not even Zidane's headbutt! Or Ronaldinho's goal from the half way line. Nope...

I have been a vegetarian all my life. Not because I fancy animal rights or support PETA. Or for health reasons. But because I was born a Brahmin (there come the brickbats!). While some Brahmins would gobble down a cow alive, there are others like me who would abstain from all forms of flesh. I even appreciate the charms of leather, though I mostly wear a pair of non-leather converse sneakers for footwear and use cloth belts. Also, my wallet is synthetic leather. Eggs are given the benefit of doubt by me, but I have a strong dislike, you can even say abhorrance, for the yolk. Hope I have made my personal choices clear.Moving on, my point is that I was raised a vegetarian. I didn't choose to become one after gaining certain enlightenment. And whenever in life I have had the chance to convert to a full fledged omnivore, and perhaps finally get to use my sharp canines, I have always made the decision to maintain my dietary status quo.
