TV-Free Living for Your Kids
2007-11-27 12:19:00
Today's children are faced with a crippling epidemic; quality time and activity has been replaced by hours in front of a video game, evening after evening of prime-time television and a slew of "social networking" websites that do not encourage actual physical social networking. Our technology-driven age has promoted a sedentary lifestyle in which children are becoming increasingly unhealthy as well as losing their social skills to the draw of a glowing screen. As a parent and a role model, it is our responsibility to promote an active and socially diverse lifestyle for today's children. While the process of becoming more involved in your child's activities can be overwhelming at times, the payoff is substantial; spending time with your children will help shape them into healthy, happy, and well-adjusted adults as they grow into our society. The trick to keeping children interested is to choose activities that are interactive, age-appropriate and suited to their interests. Belo...

4 Ways To Increase Workplace Productivity
2007-11-26 12:38:00
Every day we spend in our workplace, we are faced with requests from coworkers, business contacts and employers - all of whom seem to believe that their request is the most important and the most timely. Sometimes it can be downright impossible to complete your daily responsibilities alongside their added requests, and if you do manage to check off your entire to-do list, you can be dragging through a workday that is much longer than you anticipated. We've all been there; work overload can be frustrating, stressful and dangerous to your health and the health of your career. It is reasonable to expect a certain amount of disruption in the average work day, but how do we learn to control our surroundings and focus our attention on the task at hand? Increasing your productivity in the workplace is as simple as using a few organizational tips like the ones below:Stop Multitasking - The first step to increasing your productivity is to ignore everything you've heard about the wonders o...

Recipe: Shepherd's Pie
2007-11-25 16:23:00
This recipe is not for the "traditional" Shepherd's Pie - in fact, it is much closer to a "cottage pie", as it uses minced beef instead of lamb. Shepherd's Pie has been one of my favourite foods for as long as I can remember - as a child and as an adult cooking for my own family. Although it requires a little extra time to make it the very best, this dish is the kind that can be prepared a day or two in advance and heated up when needed. And, as with most of the recipes I will post on LifeEdit.net, it makes for great leftovers!Shepherd's Pie1 1/2 lbs ground beef1 onion, chopped finely1-2 cups canned corn kernels/sweet peassalt and pepper3/4-1 cup beef gravy3 large baking potatoes, cut in large chunks (unpeeled)1/2 cup sharp cheese, gratedsprinkle (1/3 cup) bread crumbsPlace potatoes in a large pot of cold water and cook through while preparing the rest of this recipe.Brown ground beef and onions until cooked through.Drain and pour ground beef and onion mixture into the bottom of...

6 Thoughts on Raising Financially Responsible Children
2007-11-23 12:13:00
A very valuable question has been posed over at the wpersonalfinance network - what are some steps that we (as parents or as a society) should teach our youth in order to help raise financially responsible children? All six of these thoughts can be applied to an adult's spending habits and views on money; however, the earlier we begin to implement these ideas, the better they will stick and the less negative behaviour we will exhibit when spending or saving our money. The best way to ensure that your child abides by these financial rules is to make them standard throughout your nuclear family. Children are very receptive and will pick up on your money habits - positive and negative - whether or not you make an effort to actually teach them to your child. We could all do well by following some financial guidelines. Here are six rules I believe that every child should be taught:Money is Not the Be-All and End-All. Children raised in a world where money can buy them happiness, freedom...

Why We Bought Our Home
2007-11-20 12:21:00
You don't have to turn the television on for very long in order to hear about America's housing market crisis (a topic well-covered by Patrick.net). I was watching Oprah a while ago and heard a slew of financial stories involving foreclosures, bankruptcies and poor markets for selling your home. Granted, we purchased our home prior to this episode of Oprah, but why did we choose to purchase our home right in the middle of what appears to be a junk market for our southern neighbours (who almost always end up affecting our own market)? And why, why, why did we buy a home with a ZERO down payment?!Our Broker Approved Us - We used a really great mortgage broker in order to finance our home; free, friendly, helpful and a great resource for a first time home buyer (gave us connections to both our buyers agent and our lawyer). In order to process our information and "pre-approve" us for an amount, our broker needed our financial information to determine whether or not we could actuall...

Easy Savoury Party Food Ideas
2007-11-19 12:27:00
Whether you're planning a party for ten or one hundred, a casual affair or a formal soiree, food is a very important element of your event. The right food can set the tone, keep your guests happy and ensure that your party is a memorable one. Small touches and homemade treats can turn a boring party into something right out of a glossy magazine.Unfortunately, it can be difficult to find party food that are easy to prepare, appropriately priced and still look scrumptious. The key to being a sane host is to mix some pre-made elements into easy and delicious recipes, filling out the rest of your buffet or trays with some cheese and crackers or veggies and dip. Choose your food choices that are appropriate to the theme and size of your party; here are a few ideas to help get you started:Cranberry and Goat Cheese Pinwheels - spread a mixture of 1/2 goat cheese and 1/2 cream cheese over a plain or whole wheat flour tortilla. Add a handful of dried cranberries and roll the tortilla i...

Carnival of Life Editing - Submission Guidelines
2007-11-18 16:42:00
November has been an exciting time for Life Edit.net, and I will have a lot to say on the subject when the end of the month arrives. In addition to the new recipe category that will be updated every Sunday, I have decided to host a carnival in hopes of pointing LifeEdit.net readers to other helpful articles related to this blog's content. I have seen some great success from carnivals I have entered and have also found some fantastic sites through these links, and I wanted to see if LifeEdit.net could be a part of the same experience for other bloggers.LifeEdit.net's carnival will be posted every Saturday, and its purpose is to showcase a variety of posts related to the content of this site. I will make every effort to include all posts that follow the guidelines of the carnival, though from time to time I may be unable to accommodate all of the posts.I will be setting up the carnival through Blog Carnival and the carnival will be called "The Carnival of Life Editing ". Recipe: Chicken Pot Pie
2007-11-18 16:00:00
I have decided to start a new category in LifeEdit.net; every Sunday, in lieu of a regular article, I will be posting a favourite recipe of mine. It is my goal to provide you with quick, convenient but ultimately healthy dishes that you can incorporate into your regular meal schedule.Preplanning your dinners is a great way to keep your food budget in control, as well as your waistline. Our goal in the LifeEdit household is to plan out our weekly meals every weekend and do as much shopping or prep work as possible in those two days. Luckily for us, we are a small family for two - larger families might have more difficulty in planning and executing 7 delicious and nutritious dinners! That's where these recipes come in to help.Chicken Pot Pie1 chicken, cooked (either at home or a fryer chicken from the store), meat cubed or shredded2 cups chicken broth (homemade or canned/tetra-ed)6 tbsp butter1/2 cup flour1 1/2 cup milk1/2 tsp nutmeg, lemon juice and pepper1 med. onion, chopped f...

Looking at Your Spending Map
2007-11-17 15:57:00
My shopping tendencies are a little bit...sporadic, to say the least. Although my purchases have essentially flatlined in the past year (no more random clothing purchases for this girl), I still have my favourite stores that I gravitate to when necessary. The process of looking at your "spending map" (as I like to call it) is interesting - you can stop and review the value of your purchases and consumer loyalties; essentially, what are you getting out of shopping at a specific store?Like many things in life, there is value in stopping to think about why you do the things you do - the more questions you ask, the more valuable information you will receive about your patterns of behaviour and the reasoning behind your actions. Looking at your spending map can force you to ask "why do I shop here? What value do I get from this location? Why do I choose to spend my money at this store?"; if you can't find a good reason for yourself, you might find yourself with new criteria for your sh...

6 Multi-Purpose Household Items
2007-11-16 12:25:00
I am always a fan of products that multitask, even if the idea of multitasking myself sends shivers down my spine. I especially love cheap, easy to locate products that already exist in my home, thus eliminating the need for last-minute rushes to the store because I spilled wine on my skirt or I accidentally started a grease fire (hey, it happens). It's amazing what some simple products can do, as is the idea of not needing a unique cleaning product for each use (like disposable presoaked chemical toilet brushes) for a functioning home. Save a few pennies by using a little extra elbow grease and the following products:Distilled White VinegarNeutralize Pet OdourClean Glass SurfacesSoften LaundryKill Fruit FliesPrevent Cracked Hard-Boiled EggsBaking SodaEliminate Grease/Electrical FiresDeodorize Your FridgeRemove Odour from your DishwasherPolish SilverwareTake a Soda Bath to relieve IrritationLemon JuiceClean Lime Scale off a Sink or FaucetEliminate Browning of Apples, Pears and Avoca...

Why I Don't Carry a Wallet
2007-11-15 13:14:00
This post would more correctly be titled "Why I don't carry a wallet, purse, clutch, bag or anything other than my keys and my bus tickets on a regular basis", but unfortunately that title is a bit too long.Gone are the days of pretty statement bags and funky ringtones in my life; they have been replaced by a minimalist, no-nonsense approach to my travel between home and work. I no longer carry anything with me, aside from my keys and occasionally one card (my driver's license and cell phone stay in the car if I am not taking the bus that week).Up until recently, I used to carry a big, honkin' bag with me everywhere - and in that bag, at least one day's worth of contents. Aside from weekend trips (which happened usually every other weekend) and any day-specific items (shopping sprees, gifts, etc), my bag usually contained the following:Store Manager: I carried bank statements, piles of debit receipts, rolls of coin, payroll documents, employee files, a work uniform, a lunch, my...

Public Declaration - Bringing Down Our Debt
2007-11-14 13:47:00
I'm taking a lead from Brip Blap and making a public declaration to eliminate my debt in one year's time. As I've mentioned in my financial goals post, our number-one priority for the next while is paying down our debts, either real or imaginary (as is the case with my possible debt repayment with a collection agency).Paying down debts can be a complicated and almost overpowering process, especially when dealing with different interest rates and minimum payments. People tend to overthink the process and become so involved that it seems impossible to dig your way out of debt. The term "snowballing your debt" has become very popular in the personal-finance realm, and rightly so; by focusing on your highest-interest debts and paying them off first, you are able to minimize unnecessary payments and manage your finances in a really efficient way. What's The Cost has a really fantastic Snowball Debt Calculator on their site, which is the source of the above image that maps our approxim...

10 Really Fantastic Foods
2007-11-13 13:52:00
The concept of "superfoods" is becoming increasingly popular as our society turns to our diet as a means of living longer and living better. Products like pomegranate, goji, acai and the like are now buzz-words in the grocery store, which allows marketers to jack up the price because they know people will pay for the benefits of these foods. You don't need to go to the "health" section of your grocery store or stock up on bottles of vitamins in order to get the full benefit of your foods; many regular pantry and fridge staples are a great source of vitamins and nutrients that promote a healthy, happy body and mind. By simply making the effort to add more of them to your diet, you will be able to reap the benefits of these "superfoods" and others like them.Berries - raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, blackberries and blueberries are common berry choices in the average household. Why are they so good for you? Berries are chock-full of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals that he...

Learning to Let Go
2007-11-12 12:07:00
It's amazing how giving something away can actually give you so much in return; the act of giving can boost your spirits and allow you to spend more time and energy on important things in your life. Learning to let go of our worldly restrictions is a practice best associated with Buddhist non-attachment, the idea of a life without suffering in adapting to and embracing our ever-changing world.Learning to let go is an easy concept, but a very difficult practice. To truly let go of something, we must no longer attach ourselves to its continued existence, merely accepting that we do not need it in order to survive. Unfortunately, our society breeds a life of hoarding and saving, something that is useful for daily activities but can be detrimental if used to acquire unnecessary attachments, feelings or belongings. The act of "letting go" can be lightening and uplifting, and it may or may not involve physical belongings. Here are some things you can let go of in your everyday life:Let Go ...

9 Classic Clothing Pieces for Women
2007-11-11 16:27:00
Jackie Kennedy. Marilyn Monroe. Marlene Dietrich. Audrey Hepburn. These are all women who, for better or for worse, became style icons and helped to create the trend of stylish, tailored and ultimately classic pieces of clothing for the timeless woman. Whether you follow the style trends laid out by these ladies or if you prefer to follow the likes of Madonna or (gulp) Britney Spears, having a few classic pieces in your wardrobe will not only last you a long time (saving money on clothes shopping) but they will also help make your day a little easier.Having classic items in basic colours is one way to ensure that your wardrobe lasts as long as you need it. Ensuring that your clothes are made of high-quality materials is also important - linen, wool, cotton and silk are often a better choice than polyester, lycra or satin (though not always the case). Spend some time finding clothes that are well-made and that fit you perfectly - these will be items you can keep with you for almost a...

50 Easy Family Bonding Activities
2007-11-10 14:35:00
Families today are prone to overscheduling and spending less and less time with each other, which is truly a shame. A well-bonded and happy nuclear family unit is beneficial to both adults and children; it promotes positive relationships, good communication skills and a level of activity that goes beyond sitting in front of a computer or television for hours.Scheduling time to just be a family might be difficult at first, but you will quickly see the value in spending time together and the process of planning your activities will become second nature. Involve each member of your family in the process, allowing everyone to take a leadership role in your interaction. Here is a short list of fun, often free activities that you can do together:Go campingHave a "make your own pizza" family cooking nightVolunteer as a groupHave a living-room slumber party with board games and moviesRead a story to each otherGo star-gazingPlay CharadesGo for a hikeVisit a local retirement residenceAttend a...

Dealing with Difficult People
2007-11-09 16:47:00
In our day-to-day activities we often have to deal with people who are rude, mean or downright impossible. Unfortunately, many of these difficult people are our friends, family, coworkers or employers; although life would be a lot easier if we could ignore or avoid difficult situations, sometimes that is just not an option.Dealing with difficult people can make you angry, frustrated, upset or difficult yourself. The trick to managing your interaction with these people is to be aware of the type of person you are dealing with and the most effective way to get what you want from them - whether it's an answer to a question, some help with a problem, or simply to be left alone.Diff icult Person Number One - Defensive Diane. Diane is the person in your office who gets her back up, even when you are giving her a compliment. "Diane, you look fantastic in those jeans" is met with "so what, I look like crap every other day?". Dealing with defensive people like Diane is nearly impossible beca...

15 Minute Meals: Fast, Frugal and Filling Food Ideas
2007-11-08 13:57:00
Sometimes you just want to go home and not worry about making dinner; advertisers prey upon this feeling by offering you simple pre-cooked dinners or take-out options, which are fine every once in a while, but will ultimately lead to an unhealthy family and an empty bank account if you take advantage of it on a daily basis.Making simple, fast and healthy family meals is not a thing of the past; in fact, it can be done by busy people today with a few moments of preparation and a little help from family members. Although my boyfriend is a professional cook, his choice of meal ideas do not lend themselves to 'quick and dirty cooking' and it is often the more simple meals that make it on to our table. My criteria for a simple 15 minute meal is a fairly basic formula:The meal must take approximately 15 minutes to make (on the best of days). The portions must be easy to increase or decrease depending on the number of people in your family (from one to one hundred). The ingredients are sim...

How To Write a Great Resume
2007-11-07 16:13:00
I have been in the business of reviewing and analyzing the resumes of prospective employees for almost 5 years; in this time, I have seen some fantastic documentation and I have seen some sad excuses for an application. I have hired for large and small businesses and I have hired both minimum wage employees and high-ranking financial officers; for all positions, I have the same criteria for the "yes" pile and the "no" pile. Many people do not utilize their resume appropriately and most do not recognize the impact that some small changes would have on their chances of moving to the next level in a job competition. Your resume represents you; take the opportunity to let it speak on your behalf and highlight your skills. Submitting a sub-par, copy and pasted resume is detrimental to your career and potentially to future business contacts as well. A well-presented resume will speak on your behalf and help you appear professional, eager and competent; all skills sought by every employe...

How to Have a Productive Holiday Season
2007-11-06 16:30:00
Whether you celebrate in any "holiday" festivities or not, there is a certain hustle-and-bustle that occurs around this time of year that can be both exhilarating and incredibly stressful at the same time. Between social obligations, family responsibilities, financial strain and a little added stress on your tummy and waistline, the month of December often runs the gamut of human emotion; happiness, sadness, laughter, tears, and whole bunch of anxiety. What can you do to make this December a little easier? First of all, start planning immediately (right now would be perfect). The earlier you begin to organize your thoughts and actions, the sooner things will fall into place and you will feel less unnecessary strain.Surviving Holiday ShoppingAaaah, shopping for Christmas. As a retail veteran, I can tell you that Christmas is by far the most hectic, stressful and overall busy season to be in a mall, galleria, store or outlet. Why Should You Support LifeEdit.net?
2007-11-06 14:44:00
This is the first and only time I will make a post regarding any advertising or donations requests as displayed by LifeEdit.net. Many "Get Paid to Blog" information sites strongly recommend against advertising from the very beginning; their logic suggests waiting for your reader base to increase and then adding the hopefully money-making elements at that point. Some information sites are in favour of placing advertisements on from the beginning, and some sit in the middle of the issue. The reason I have chosen to have advertisements on my site from the very conception of LifeEdit.net is because I have no intention of misleading people or losing readership if and when I were to add sponsors at a later time. The current layout of this blog is essentially how this blog will remain until such a time as it absolutely needs to change; if people are OK with the sponsorship (which, in my opinion, is pretty subtle and well-integrated) then they will continue to read for the value of my con...

Getting the Most out of Financial Success
2007-11-05 21:00:00
Wise Bread's Will Chen asked this question - what would you do with a million dollars (tax free)? Although a million dollars does not account for much these days, especially if it is in American funds, a financial windfall of this size would still present plenty of opportunity for a more stable, secure lifestyle.Financial planning often revolves around frugality and trying to stretch every dollar to its fullest. Because there is such a significant focus on saving our money and getting the best deal, the concept of a cash windfall or too much money is rarely addressed. Because no one really plans for having more money than they need, there are often situations where a person will make frivolous purchases because he or she has no idea what to do otherwise. Imagine if you won the lottery tomorrow? Would you blow your newfound wealth on a new home and a tonne of toys or would you feel guilty and keep all of the money with no intention of spending it? The key to managing financial...

Help Your Children Follow the Right Crowd
2007-11-05 19:19:00
Children today are faced with many choices - whether they are choosing their friends, their food or their hobbies, a parent's role in their child's decision can be as involved as the parent would like. Many parents step back from their children's lives in order to let them develop their own tastes and learn their own lessons. Unfortunately, there are many situations when a parent's input can help save the child from situations like bullying, peer pressure, lying and going against the child's best interests. In balancing a child's independence with a parent's knowledge, you will help to evolve communication and foster positive dynamics between yourself and your son or daughter. How do you help your child make the right choices and follow the right crowd?Instill Personal Interests. The popular saying "if you stand for nothing you'll fall for anything" rings especially true in the case of peer-pressure and bullying. By allowing your child to develop their own interests and o...

Saving for Retirement When You're Short on Cash
2007-11-04 22:45:00
In an ideal world, saving for retirement would be a quick and simple process that would ensure your security and livelihood well into old age. Unfortunately, our rising cost of living and decreased job securities has left many people in the dark about their retirement and in a position that makes saving downright difficult. In a situation where you may not have a lot of money to spend on your future, how can you afford to think about retiring?Whether you intend to retire early (35, 34, 55, etc) or later in life, the entire premise of retirement is to quit working. While you will be requiring daily living expenses, you will be generating little to no income. Some people choose to retire quietly and some use this opportunity to live their wildest dreams; whether you're selling your home and living in an apartment or choosing to travel the world, you can do a world of good for your future self by planning for retirement as early as possible.See The Bigger Picture. Managing Finances in Your Twenties
2007-11-03 13:07:00
Many young people begin their adult lives with goals and dreams for their future, often failing to realize that simple steps taken in their twenties can allow them to achieve their goals quickly and as painlessly as possible. Just as good money management should begin as early in a person's life as possible, young adults should begin planning for their future as soon as they can. Proper money management and financial skills developed in a person's twenties can directly impact their quality of life throughout adulthood and into retirement.Unfortunately, many people in their twenties are presented with larger amounts of money and increasing debts and responsibilities, often without being given the appropriate tools to manage their financial situation. Simple processes like debt management and retirement savings are often overlooked because the concept is difficult to grasp and the consequences are not immediate. Nonetheless, you should begin to plan for these common issues as soo...

Help Control Your Child's Temper
2007-11-02 21:34:00
A particularly endearing but equally frustrating part of childhood is the lack of emotional filters a child has in place for situations when he or she feels strongly about something. It is not often a difficult task to determine how your child feels about things like the mall, his or her favourite toys, or his or her least favourite food. Developing this ability to control one's emotions comes later in life, through modeling from parents and other adults as well as hard lessons learned about the appropriate time to say things.Children are highly impressionable, which can work to your advantage (teaching them good habits) or to your disadvantage (watching a 4-year old mimic a swear word he heard mommy say). This ability to learn and develop at a fast rate provides an ideal teaching environment for parents to encourage their child to control his or her anger using simple tricks that encourage positive behaviour.Model Your Child After Your Own Behaviour. Your child will follow your...

My Personal Life Goals
2007-11-01 23:07:00
Why do I write Life Edit.net?I write LifeEdit.net for my own benefit and hopefully for the benefit of others. For others' benefit, I write to pass along words that have been passed to me; I write to try and make life a little more productive for everyday, normal people. For my own benefit, I write to make my life goals clearer and I write to remind myself of the standards I hold for my actions and beliefs. I write to help achieve my goals. This post goes hand-in-hand with the previous, outlining my Personal Financial Goals . The reason I have decided to post this information is because I firmly believe that we attract things we ask for in life (very "The Secret" of me); what better way to attract my goals then to make a public announcement of my life's wish list?My financial goals will certainly affect my actions as I move forward in life, but what exact actions do I hope to take and what to what means will my financial goals serve? What ultimate impact do I hope to have on this ...
