Tattoo Education: Nautical Tattoos
2008-05-12 17:52:00 In the next few editions of Tattoo Education , we will look at some of the most common tattoo designs around. Though common, these designs are highly symbolic. Let's look at some of these designs...The Anchor Tattoo - The anchor has long been a favoured among sailors from all over the world, US Marines and naval aviators. Some designs that are commonly tattooed along with the anchor are sailing ships, mermaids, the nautical star, etc...In ancient times, the anchor was a symbol with ties to the Christian church. An anchor tattoo can be thought of as holding one steadfast, like an anchor holding a great sailing ship safe in harbour, against winds and currents that might carry it astray. The Bluebird Tattoo ? The bluebird is another nautical tattoo with a long maritime history that dates back to more than a century. The sighting of a bluebird (swallow) after a long journey at sea, was seen as a sign of good luck. A sailor would get a tattoo of the bluebird on one side of his chest after... More About: Nautical

2008-05-08 05:26:00 The magnitude of the cyclone that hit Myanmar is beyond imagination. Latest reports from Myanmar states that an estimated 80,000 are dead from a single district (Labutta). That's just one district from a country that is 40th largest in the world. To give you a rough idea, Myanmar is bigger than France, Thailand, Japan, Malaysia and the United Kingdom. We have at the very least, a million people that have been left homeless. Thousands are missing and accounted for. In the midst of the uncertainty, aid agencies and organizations have come forward to make a difference. You too can make a difference by making a donation to these organizations.Red Cross Red Crescent - Make a donation by credit card of cheque. 22,000 Dead
2008-05-07 04:50:00 Reading about the situation in Myanmar yesterday on Yahoo.com broke my heart. What's going on there is seriously messed up. Nah, it's fucked up! That's the only way to describe the government/junta. A bunch of fucked up bastards! 22,000 dead because of a cyclone?! Naturally, you'll ask yourself. What are they doing for their people?Latest news reports say that an estimated 41,000 people are missing. Instead of readily accepting all the help they can get, the military regime is "negotiating" with aid workers. George W. Bush among many other leaders want to help them. I'll rephrase this. They need to help Myanmar because the world knows that the junta isn't gonna do anything for their people. Remember what they did to the monks the last time around?Cnn.com reported that the dead are being thrown into rivers. Homes have been destroyed and they are running out of food. Without medical supplies, the sick and injured can't get the help they need. The people of Myanmar are fighting ... More About: Dead

Here in Singapore, I have seen a heavy influence of Japanese styled tattoos. Just one look and you'll know it's a Japanese themed tattoo. Their tattoos are bold, colorful and eye catching.Tattoos have played a huge role in the Japanese culture. History books show that Japanese men had their ranks tattooed on them in the Yayou Period (300 B.C. - 300). And in the Edo Period (1603 - 1868), criminals where marked by the Shoguns. These tattoo markings consisted of stripes on their arms or faces. The number, formation and placement of the tattooed stripes differed from each city they were in. These tattoos ensured that the criminals would have no place in soci...
Should maids get a day off?
2008-05-02 18:29:00 Seriously, is there even a reason to ask this question? Apparently, it's a question that needs to be asked in Singapore. Here is a snippet from straitstimes.com. THREE civil society groups have joined hands to campaign for foreign domestic workers here to be given a regular day off. The National Committee for the United Nations Development Fund for Women (Unifem) Singapore, Transient Workers Count Too (TWC2) and the Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics (Home) on Tuesday launched a year-long publicity campaign, calling on employers to give their maids at least one day off a month. Their efforts centre around a campaign website which, when launched on May Day, will give advice on how employers can give their maids time off and a list of social activities that such workers can take up on their rest day. I seriously feel for the maids. They work their asses off everyday day just to feed their families back home. I don't know if I should say this bu...

Tattoo Education: Tatau Samoa
2008-04-28 20:38:00 Tatau: Samoa n for tattoo In the past, tatau was a spiritual process and a cultural requirement for those wishing to hold various positions within society. These traditional tattoos continue to be worn, often with changed, but still potent, meaning.Legend has it that tattooing was introduced to the Samoans by the Fijians in 1828/30. It was the women that brought the art of tattooing across the ocean to Samoa. As recorded by researchers, both the Samoans and Fijians used identical tattooing instruments. However, the Fijians preferred to use human bones in replacement of today's tattoo needles and the Samoans used boar tusks (the boar tusks acted as teeth to the tattoo instrument). Well, the Fijians were cannibals once upon a time. This explains why they used human bones instead of shells and animal bones. The teeth of the tattoo instrument had to be sharpened with a piece of coral regularly. If the teeth wasn't sharp enough, the tattooed would suffer severe tissue damage. There were ... More About: Education , Tattoo
Ghostly Encounters
2008-04-28 18:21:00 If you're a sucker for ghost stories, I've got just the thing for you! I came across this awesome blog last night. Yup, it's a local Singaporean blog that's dedicated to ghost stories. All of the stories have been contributed by fellow Singaporeans.I intend on contributing my encounters when I do have the time. I've had my fair share of ghostly encounters through the years. All of the encounters freaked the shit outta me. Yes, I am afraid of them bloody ghosts! Don't let the tattoos fool ya! I'm afraid of way too many things. Ghosts, cockroaches, balloons, bees, spiders, etc...My biggest fear is that centipedes will one day develop wings! If that day ever comes, I don't know what I'll do. You're probably thinking, "damn! this guy with so many tattoos is a wimp!!". Yep, you're right! Ok, I'm done shaming myself...Hmm...let's talk a little more about this Ghost Story Blog. That's what this post was to be about anyway. The blog is called Hung Zai. If you know what Hung Za... Fri Da-di-da-di Day!
2008-04-25 17:05:00 As Rod and The Married Men would say, it's a Fri Da-di-da-di Day! There was a time when I hated Fridays. And some Saturdays too. My short stint in the nightlife industry totally changed my perception of weekends! When you work in the nightlife industry, you'll dread Fridays and Saturdays. At least for me that is. I completely hated weekends. I had to deal with idiots most of the time. The excuse "oh I'm drunk" is seriously over used! I had to drink with customers I didn't even like. Imagine that! I hear one of them fools is now a PR Manager. That's homicide in my books...Well, there are some who love the nightlife industry. Take Sanjay from Ministry of Sound Singapore and Marco de Miranda from Bar None (now known as b:one and will soon be known as Bar None once again. How confusing!!!). Both these guys work incredibly hard to ensure that their clubs are functioning at it's best. That's not an easy feat mind you. Trust me, I tried and it was a pain in the bloody ass!!!So the ne...

2008-04-21 13:25:00 It's Earth Day tomorrow folks!! Let's all do something small for a start. There are lots you and I can do to make this world a better place. Not just for us, but for our children. For my child! Yup, Papa Boyd wants you to do something for his little prince. I want Drayden to grow up and admire Orang Utans in the wild. Not in a freaking zoo because their natural habitat was destroyed by a bunch of ignorant idiotic farmers! And I don't want my son to read how we idiots drove the Polar Bear to extinction. Sadly, all this and more will happen if we HUMANS don't do something soon. Here are some Earth friendly suggestions and ideas you can implement tomorrow, the day after and the next...1. Recycle recycle recycle!!! - It's the easiest thing to do! Once you get the hang of recycling, you can move on to buying recycled products! Fun huh?2. Tattoo Education: Ink
2008-04-21 11:14:00 Unlike today's tattoo ink that contain FDA approved ingredients, tattoo ink in the past were made by the tattoo artist. Take the South Seas style of tattooing for example. Samoans used Candle Nut as the basis for their pigment. The Candle Nut would be burnt under a halve coconut shell. Once that is done, the soot would be collected and mixed with sugar water. It has been said that this mixture contains healing properties. There you have it. A real simple way of making tattoo ink that would last a lifetime!(If you would like to contribute to this weekly column, do email Noel at ink@noelboyd.com.) More About: Education , Tattoo

It's the Weekend!
2008-04-18 18:15:00 Hey all...I hope you're going well and you're looking forward to the weekend. It's been a pretty long week for me. With the birth of Drayden on Sunday, it's been busy busy busy! Before Baby D was born, I told myself that certain things have to change. My lifestyle, my attitude towards certain stuff, etc...But man, the moment he popped out of mommy, it changed my perspective of life. Besides all the blood and slime covering the little one, seeing Drayden for the first time was absolutely beautiful!I've been thinking...Life isn't all about money right? Hmm...it is but let's pretend that it isn't. I wanna do something that helps the community. With this blog, I can help anyone that's looking to promote a product or business. While I can't and won't add banners without some form of monetary exchange, I'll use posts to help anyone out. These posts can either happen once or twice a week. I need to give this more thought. Nonetheless, it'll be awesome if this does materialize.A... More About: Weekend
