Stress and bother!
2008-05-01 12:39:00
We had a great time last weekend. We went to a nice, very casual wedding reception/party. The food was good and everyone was nice (I didn't know most of them). We also went to a karaoke party, so of course I had a lot of fun at that. I sang a lot...it was very fun.I tried going to bed a little earlier tonight, but instead I just had a three hour nap and woke up around 4:30! Blah. So I am going to try to stay up and go to bed early tonight.I haven't been feeling that well this week...just my usual intestinal problems, but some weeks are worse than others. I am going to go back to taking Imodium on a regular basis to see if that helps any.I am not losing weight so far. Too many cookies and too much ice cream etc. I am exercising but I need to cut those things out of my diet. It's so hard! When I couldn't go back to sleep, I kept thinking of all these things I want done, but they are not getting done due to lack of time, effort, money, etc. I'm hoping we can move into a new ho...

Busy weeks! And more to come!
2008-04-21 03:56:00
This has been an exciting week! We went to a great wine-tasting dinner on Wednesday at Epiphany. It was almost all red wine, and I'm not a great fan of red wine, but it wasn't bad and I actually liked some of them. The food is always good there, too! They have these about once a month now.Friday night it rained hard. We went to our usual hang-outs. They had a big triathalon on Saturday here, but we didn't go to it. Saturday we went to the graduate student picnic at this park we hadn't been to before. It's a beautiful park called Sokol park. I was really shocked that more people weren't in this park on a Saturday afternoon! The weather was nice, too. It was windy, but not cold. There was lots of great food. Normally I love to cook for stuff like this, but I didn't know until the day before (ahem!) that we were supposed to bring something, so we just got cole slaw from the store. It was a very fun picnic, and I enjoyed meeting the students and talking to everyone. There ...

I'm typing this at the University of Alabama. Waiting for my husband to come out of class so he can take me over to get my allergy shots. Allergies have been bad this week...all day yesterday I wasn't sure if I was sick or not. I don't think I am, just was tired and had really bad allergies. I slept a lot.We had a cold front come through yesterday. It was so cold, I actually had the heat on again almost all day. Brrr. It's April dammit!!My m-i-l went to visit one of her daughters until Saturday. I hope she doesn't have a bad time, even though it's not really a regular vacation or visit. Her son-in-law is having a heart operation that we hope will help him. Good luck, Joe!We will go pick her up from the airport on Saturday. That means another trip to Birmingham, so I can go to Whole Foods and P.F. Chang's again! Yay! Hopefully traffic won't be too bad because I think they are having a big race at Talladega that day.The poor dog, he always mopes around when my m-i-l le...

It's April already!
2008-04-05 21:23:00
Wow, I can't believe how long it's been since I wrote in here. I have just been SO busy! I have been trying to do a lot of stuff on my TV site, more than usual, to make up for all the time I took off after the holidays. We had a nice Easter. I hope you did, too! There is this little restaurant near us called Kozy's, and they had a nice Easter brunch that we went to.It is so pretty here now, everything is blooming. April is the best month here. There are so many pretty flowers, and the weather is really nice. Too bad it sets my allergies off, too!Speaking of which, I have finally started my allergy shots. I have not been really good about getting them done in time, but I am leaving myself big notes as reminders. I'm supposed to do them twice a week, with two days in between. Looks like we are going to go Mondays and Fridays.Yesterday there was a big storm with a tornado watch. We were at the allergy doctor when it got so dark and rainy. It was no big deal, though. Par for the co...

I'm sitting in the airport at Houston (George Bush Intercontinental Airport) as I type this, waiting for my plane to arrive so we can fly back to Alabama. The wireless apparently does not work here, which is no surprise as that seems to happen often when I try to connect!I forget where I left off on my blog, but Thursday night we went to the Korean restaurant called Gin Seng with our friend and had a great meal. The whole town was really crazy all week, and it was hard to get a cab. We went out to karaoke at The Greek Isles. My friend Joe the Hat and his wife Jean were not there. They host it Sundays through Tuesdays, so we just missed them. Their friend Jack hosts on the other days. He is not as good as Joe, and he does not draw as good of a crowd. I sang two songs, and it was fun, but the crowd was not very responsive. They were pretty dead, in fact, and barely clapped for anyone. I did "Valentine" by Martina McBride as my warmup song. I hadn't done that one before. The...

Some words about global warming and climate change
2008-03-15 11:20:00
Let me just take a minute to bitch-slap some sense into some very ignorant people out in the world.Global warming and climate change are real. They are facts. There have been countless studies, all coming up with the same findings. Forget about Al Gore's movie because, you know, they can put whatever they want into a movie, and he's a politician that you may not agree with. Go read the studies. Go talk to real scientists. Get the facts. It's out there and it's not going away!I'm not saying this to scare people. I'm just so tired of people wondering if it's really true (even educated people, which boggles my mind). Every reputable scientist in the world agrees that it is real and caused by mankind. They may differ on some smaller issues, but they agree on the main points.Even Pat Robertson and George Bush believe in it now! Wow!!Here are some great websites for you to get good information.Article about how people are not believing it, and why, and how scientists did not even ...

Trip to Vegas today
2008-03-13 23:55:00
We're here in Vegas ....we got in last night around 5:30, but it was a long day. We left our house around 8 am. The flight was after 11. Takes an hour to get to the airport. My m-i-l flew to San Diego at the same time. We were very tired when we got here, too. I tried to take a nap but it didn't happen. David is at a poli sci conference here (that's why we came) at the Riviera, but there were no rooms there for Wed. so we stayed downtown at the El Cortez the first night. I expected it to be a dump because the area around it is pretty seedy, and the casino is not much, but the room was huge and not bad at all. It was a non-smoking room and not entirely free of smoke but not bad. We had a little couch, coffee table, chair, nice desk and two big beds. The bathroom was a bit small and the tub way too small to take a bath in (I tried - it was not very deep nor long). We try to stay in every casino/hotel in Vegas at least once, that is our tradition. We had not stayed in that one be...

2008-03-11 01:58:00
I was very sick all last week...my nose was so stuffed up and runny, and I had a fever, just slept a lot. I am finally okay, for the most part. Man, that was a terrible head cold.I am very tired...been up since 2:30 am so I will be going to bed soon even though it's only 8 pm. I was still sick over the weekend so I slept a lot.I have been trying to catch up on a lot of stuff once I was well enough to sit at the computer. I finally caught up on most of my emails!I even organized my DVD's more and updated my list this week. And I backed up my hard drive and deleted a bunch of stuff. I have been downloading a lot of videos, so I was running out of space.I have really been taking it easy because we are going to Vegas on Wednesday, so I didn't want to relapse. So now exercise, which kind of sucks. My DVD player/recorder definitely needs to be repaired...I had hoped they could just reset it, but that didn't work. SIGH. It's ok, I have another vcr and tv that also need to be fixed, ...

When will February be over?
2008-02-25 19:54:00
I am so tired of winter and ready for the warmer weather to arrive! I guess that's the punishment we get for having such a mild November and December...it's been so cold since then. BRRRRR.I can tell Spring is near, though, because my allergies are already acting up. I still haven't gotten my allergy shots - I hope to start those this week. It's just tough getting over there twice a week.Every year about this time I get a sort of post-holiday blues, or blahs, and this year has been no exception. I guess I sort of hibernate for the winter, sleeping a lot and losing interest in most things. That's the way I've been lately, but just like Spring I am coming out of it. Sometimes my "job" gets very stressful or busy, so I just don't want to work on it, so I put things off even more. I would probably just chuck it at some point, but I do make some money off it, and so many people depend on it...but sometimes I just get very tired of it or overwhelmed by everything that has to be ...

Happy Valentine's Day!
2008-02-15 03:28:00
Well, what's left of it, anyway...I spend way too much time on these silly holidays greetings. I love this site, Sparkle Tags, where they make cool greetings you can post around that sparkle and move, they're just so fun. So I have to post them on my forums, and send them in email, etc. It takes so much time, though! I spent the last hour or so just updating my Gmail address book ....just adding some I was missing but I have a lot to delete as well. And I haven't been to MySpace yet, that takes a long time, too. Ugh! But I love to do it, I just don't like how long it takes.Well, we had a nice Valentine's Day or week. We went out last night to dinner at our favorite restaurant, Epiphany. Funny thing is, the food was not as good as usual. That hasn't happened ever before, so hopefully it was just a fluke! We had a great time, though, anyway. The appetizers and wine were fabulous like usual, the entrees were just a bit dry.Today I went in to the university, did some shopping ...

I Voted!
2008-02-06 01:20:00
I voted today for Obama...he's okay, I guess. I just hope he can win it. I didn't realize that he's my age! That's just plain weird. I'm too young to be president ;) I also voted for a couple of delegates for Obama, students here at the university.I saw an "incident" at the polling place. Some jerkwad (middle aged white guy wearing polyster) was arguing politics with one of the poll workers (one of the old guys that stands by the ballot machine to help you if you need it, or the one that hands out the "I Voted" stickers). I could hear him while I was voting, that's how loud he was. I think he was arguing about the war because I heard the phrases "Geneva convention" and "bombing women and children". So the women in charge came over and told him VERY politely that he couldn't do that (because it's against the law to advocate for particular candidates or issues within a certain distance from the polls). He asked her rudely, "What party are you with?" and she told him that s...
This week's stuff
2008-01-31 08:56:00
I guess I'm voting for Obama in the primary next week. He'll win here anyway, and I like voting for the winner! As I said before, I am not enthusiastic about any of them, but any are better than the Republicans. Looks like it will be McCain. He's too old, for one thing. For another, he doesn't really care about anything except wars and foreign stuff...he is a pro-war, plus he really doesn't care about things like the economy. So why would ANYONE vote for him? I just don't get it. Anyway, I hope it all turns out ok at the end of the year.I finally went to the doctor today. Turns out, when I took the fall about a month and a half ago, I actually did break my finger! Or as the doctor said, "cracked" it. Who knew that you would break a finger and still bend it, and it wouldn't hurt that much? Not me! So even though it's started to heal, it still has some swelling, and it's very stiff, so she told me to soak it in ice water three times a day, and flex it. Hopefully that w...

I just wanted to make a correction on a statement I made back in December..I had talked about having problems with a company where I got calendars made...I had said it was dcp-print.com, but actually, it was pens.com!! I want to make sure everyone knows that because dcp-print.com is a GREAT company where you can get tons of business cards for very little money and with great quality! They will not rip you off or send you endless spam like the horrible Vista Print does. Now, I will probably not order again from pens.com because I was really not happy with them. They sent me the order, even though they had led me to believe they were canceling it (this was after already misleading me about what they would look like and not answering my emails), which caused me great problems because I then sent my Xmas cards with no calendars and had to re-send them again later, which cost me extra postage. When I argued on the telephone, they refused to give me a refund but did finally give me half of...

It's SNOWING!! In ALABAMA!!!It doesn't do that very often here. This is the view from our front door. That's the house across the street. Our car is the dark blue one up close. The one across the street is the neighbors' but it used to belong to us (they bought it from us). Some of you may recognize our little Teal Mobile :)Anyway, the last time it snowed at all here was 13 years ago, so it's not a usual occurence. It's always fun when it snows the first time, especially if you are in your house and don't have to go anywhere! We might get up to 3 inches, they say. But what do they know...they said it would snow last night and it didn't until 8:30 this morning!I hope there aren't many accidents...Southerners don't know how to drive in this stuff. At least not the ones here. It does snow quite often in northern parts of Alabama. Anyway, it's fun. I took more pics with my regular camera of the snow and the dog out in it, and I'll take more if it accumulates any more. ...

I think I am almost over my cold now. I felt a lot better the past few days, and I haven't sneezed since Thursday!Wednesday I woke up with a very stiff and sore neck. It's really that whole area where the back, shoulder, and neck meet. This has happened before. It may be from something I was doing with the trackball on the computer. It still hurts, so it's taking a long time to get better. Not that I stay off the computer! But it's a lot better than it was. It was very painful Wednesday and Friday. I guess a part of getting old is talking about all your aches and pains! :) Honestly, I'm not a hypochondriac.Anyway, feeling better, so that's good. Friday I went in to the University to check my mailbox and mail a TON Of stuff. Like over $80 worth!! Wow! I had a bunch of packages to mail, including one big one to Australia. And I bought stamps (wow are those things expensive nowadays!). I also mailed out tons of business cards for the club I'm in. Glad to be caught up on all t...
New in 2008!
2008-01-09 07:09:00
Ok, I've had my cold for 8 days now...this is getting very tedious. I thought I was almost better, but last night started feeling crummy again and sneezing a lot again. Feeling a little better today, but we'll see. I've just been sleeping as much as I can to try to get rid of it.I am mostly healed from my fall, but there's a little bump or lump under my cheek where I fell on it (no more bruise), and my pinky is still a bit stiff and I can't flex it as far as the other one, so I might get to the doctor tomorrow.Over Christmas I got myself a present. I went to the hair cutting place in the mall (not Supercuts) and asked them to recommend a good shampoo. My hair is very oily, and lately it's looked worse than usual. So they got me some clarifying shampoo and it has helped a lot. Sure, it's more expensive than what you get at the grocery store...but it lasts a long time, so it's not that bad. I usually buy something like Pert or Garnier Fructis, whatever is cheapest and has cond...

Tired of this darn cold!
2008-01-06 05:02:00
Tomorrow it will be a week since I got sick. I'm pretty tired of it! The first two days I mostly slept...felt terrible and had a little sore throat, but in some ways it was ok because I was mostly just asleep. Then Tues. and Wed. I felt much better. But since Wednesday night I have done nothing but sneeze...it's awful. I hope it's over soon! I slept 14 hours last night, hoping it would help...we'll see how it goes. Usually with colds it is ok, I can still work etc. but this one has been really awful. I'll probably go to the doctor on Monday if I'm not a lot better.I have done a lot of work with my site for a change...feeling too poorly to do much else but just sit at the computer or in front of the TV.Good thing I did a bunch of recording before I got sick...although, honestly, I haven't felt like listening to music because it's tough when your ears are plugged up.I've been getting tons of business cards lately...two guys are sending me all their "extras", so that's good....

Happy New Year!
2008-01-01 00:10:00
I hope you all have a great new year's eve, new year's day and the rest of 2008!I wish I could say I was having an exciting new year's, but yesterday I woke up with a nasty cold. I have been mostly sleeping the past few days. I don't know if I will make it up to midnight!Earlier today we saw two beautiful cardinals in our yard. They looked just like the kind you see in winter decorations.I updated my TV Blog! What are your resolutions for new year's? I'm sure mine are the same as last year...the most important being to lose weight. I am too worried to even weight myself, honestly.....I told you all about Twitter before. It's another social networking thing where you can IM your friends online...but the difference is that you can do it with either your cell phone, or you web browser, or your IM client, and you can send messages to multiple friends at once. I find it really fun, but so far I haven't been able to convince many people to use it. I guess it's my age...young peopl...

Merry Christmas to all!
2007-12-26 23:36:00
We are having a great holiday season, so I hope you all are, too? What presents did you get? Let me know!Sunday was fairly relaxing. We drove around after dark to look at various Xmas lights. There is this one trailer park in Holt (a small town near here) where they all decorate and put up like a Christmas village for kids. We had fun looking at all the lights and decorations!Monday we did a lot of errands and buying last-minute gifts and some groceries.Christmas Eve was very nice, but I should have started earlier and done more stuff ahead of time. I was running around crazy at the last minute and did not finish all I wanted to do. I still have some hors d'eouvres in the freezer that are not cooked, and I only made about half of the cookies I wanted to make. It's ok, though, as I will continue to bake etc. for a week or so. I just wish I had been more on the ball this year with the cooking and prep. It went very well, anyway, and was good. I always make way too much, and we eat...

It's almost Christmas!
2007-12-21 09:29:00
Wow, I can't believe it's already been 11 days since I posted! I've just been so busy getting ready for the holidays. I got everything done except for baking and cooking. I'm starting that today. We went someplace Tuesday night, and we had a lot of fun. However, we were walking back, and it had rained a little, so the sidewalk was wet. But we came upon this particularly slippery piece of sidewalk, and even though I was wearing tennis shoes, my feet just slipped out from under me as I was about to step onto the street. I fell to my right, where I was stepping, and I tried to break my fall with my hand. Both my knees and my right-hand hit the pavement, but I fell on my pinky, and that was not strong enough to break the fall, so I then fell on my right cheek. It was very painful and upsetting, to say the least. I'm fine now, just some scrapes and bruises, and I slightly strained my pinky. I have a big purple or blue mark on my face. My knees are all banged up. It sure could have...

I went back to the allergy doctor's office on Thursday for testing....They pricked my arms with allergens (not food but everything else). You should have seen them swell up! LOL! I am allergic to all grasses and many trees (which I knew already from previous testing), and also dust now...that is a new one. So after Christmas I will start getting shots. I sure hope it helps! I won't really know until Spring -- that is the best test because mine are worse in Spring and Fall.I was very glad to take some Clarinex after the test, that's for sure!! The itching, watering, sinus headaches, and sneezing the past few days have been awful. I even stayed away from all things gluten so I wouldn't feel any worse. And, geez, that was bad enough but I also had cramps....Oh, the nurse said they are going to call into my pharmacy an epi-pen just in case I react badly to any of the shots. She says it's very unlikely, but they do it just in case. Yikes.I am going to have to redo my whole bedroom...

A good birthday week
2007-12-05 10:39:00
I had a pretty good birthday weekend. We went out Saturday night to our favorite restaurant in town, Epiphany, and it was fabulous. I had steak and it was one of the best I've ever had. They use Kobe beef. And I had their wonderful creme brulee for dessert. We all enjoyed our meal. We always get great service there; the staff is so nice and knows us well from our frequent visits. We didn't do all our usual errands this week...well, I have been on a late schedule, which means I have been getting up late. They went to the mall Saturday without me so they could get my presents. We went to Publix on Sunday (that is the best grocery store here but not that close by, and not that cheap, either). So I didn't get to go to Manna, the health food store, this week. No biggie.I may have mentioned that I am off the antihistamines this week because I have to take the allergy tests on Thursday, and the doctor wanted me to be off the antihistamines so he could get an accurate test. I got my first Christmas cards today! Yay! And a birthday card!Monday is my birthday so we are celebrating this weekend. Saturday night we're going out to Epiphany, which is one of our favorite restaurants here. We go there every Friday night for drinks and snacks, so they know us well. We're going to the mall tomorrow as well...then next Friday will be karaoke. Woo hoo!!I'll probably drag out the Christmas decorations this weekend and get started. It usually takes me 3-4 days to get it all done. Just taking everything out of the closet is tiring enough. Then putting up the tree takes a while, then decorating it, then putting up all the other stuff. We kinda overdo it :) I'm thinking of getting a second tree because there are too many ornaments. I'm going to definitely get a scat mat for the main one. This is a mat you buy and if your pet steps on it, they get a small (but harmless) shock. Otherwise our dog will pee on it. Last year I put up a little fence, but frankly ...

2007-11-27 04:52:00
I got really ambitious this year with the turkey from Thanksgiving. I saved a lot of the bones (not the entire carcass), and the giblets etc. and tonight I made soup stock with them. It really smells good in the kitchen. I just threw some carrots and a bunch of spices in there with the leftover organic chicken stock and some water. Then I brought it to a boil, simmered it for two hours, then strained it to take out the bones etc. Then I put it in the fridge, and tomorrow I will take off the fat that has hardened. I am thinking of making soup with it.I did something even more creative than that. I picked off a lot of turkey meat from the leftover bones, and I took out the carrots. And also I took out the giblets. I put them all in a food processor along with some of the stock, a stick of butter, and some bacon and dijon mustard. Turkey pate! It's very yummy. And pretty healthy since it's mostly turkey and carrots. That's called recycling! :)We are still finishing up the leftov...

Happy Black Friday!
2007-11-23 13:54:00
I did not even know that today is called Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving when shoppers descend onto the mall en masse). Apparently it's also a big day online. Also, there is something called Cyber Monday, which is the following Monday. This started years ago when most people still were on dialup, so they waited to shop online the following Monday when they got to work and had a faster connection. All news to me! So there are sales all over the net, as well as in stores, this weekend.I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. (And no, I don't really care if you're Canadian or someone else outside of the U.S. - surely you've heard that we in the U.S. have Thanksgiving near the end of November?) And while we're at it, why do Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving in October? That is just weird. Just kidding, I'm not really Anti-Canadian or anything!Anyhow....we had a very nice one. Please vote for my blog to be a top site! Click on the link at right or click here on this URL: http://www.blogtoplist.com/vote.php?u=246 13I sure was stressed last week when I typed up my blog. Well, I'm trying to get more organized, so that helped the stress. I actually installed Outlook, but just the calendar part because I hate the Outlook mail program. Anyway, even though it did take up a chunk of time to set it up, it has some neat features that help remind me what things I want to get done that day by popping up and reminding me with a little box. I'm ok as long as I don't put more than one or two things per day!I did finally start my Christmas cards..hopefully I can get them all done by next weekend! I have been so stressed lately...overcommitted, too many hobbies, too much to do. SIGH.The approaching holidays don't help! I told myself I would at least START on my Christmas cards on the 15th...ha!I got a cookbook all about vegetables, and I made a couple of the salads - they are great and delicious! One was so good that I ate two bowls and had to make myself not finish it (can you be a pig if you are eating vegetables??). I put the recipes up on my recipe page.I also promised myself I'd try to keep my TV blog updated every day but HA HA!! Of course not.
