Ibanag In the City
I reside in the city but live the suburban life of an Ibanag. Blending the many beautiful ways of my mother and her distinctly Ibanag cultural heritage, I have become my own, noting my strengths, my frailties. This is me and how I see life. The sig

Better page rank long overdue? Just asking?
2008-03-17 15:21:00
I realized how much information I lack about trying to increase my blogs' page ranks. That is not to say I am getting obsessive about it. But the idea that there's practically no one out there that I could get interested to read what I say no matter how mundane :-) is making me depressed. The fact is maybe I don't know how to do it! I have driven my blogs practically by gut feel. Reading others, joining blog communities, engaging others through comments I think that must amount to something.I have been blogging regularly since September 2007, but published my very first blog in January 2006. It was a project I started and wanted to see through no matter what. Sheer determination. That, I can do it despite nearing senior citizenship is really a plus if you ask me. In fact, I was even able to teach someone how to do it. And guess what? His page ranking today is much, much better than mine. I must admit he writes and researches his posts very well. Truly original conten...

Congratulations to Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao
2008-03-16 12:14:00
Although it was a very close fight, both Pacquiao and Barerra gave their best. But only one boxer can win. Some quarters are saying that hadn't Manny floored Barerra a couple of times, he could have lost the fight. Still, others believe that another re-match is in order because Manny was ahead by just 1 point. Looked like the unfinished business remains unfinished? Whatever it is, Manny remains the winner. No one can take that away from him for now.

More sophisticated technology at whose expense?
2008-03-14 16:25:00
Nanotechnology Defined but wait there are Conflicting Definitions: "Unfortunately, conflicting definitions of nanotechnology and blurry distinctions between significantly different fields have complicated the effort to understand the differences and develop sensible, effective policy. The risks of today's nanoscale technologies (nanoparticle toxicity, etc.) cannot be treated the same as the risks of longer-term molecular manufacturing (economic disruption, unstable arms race, etc.). It is a mistake to put them together in one basket for policy consideration—each is important to address, but they offer different problems and will require different solutions. As used today, the term nanotechnology usually refers to a broad collection of mostly disconnected fields. Essentially, anything sufficiently small and interesting can be called nanotechnology. Much of it is harmless. For the rest, much of the harm is of familiar and limited quality. But as we will see, molecular manufact...

Recession and unemployment: Makes no difference to me
2008-03-13 10:08:00
Below you will find an article which gives out tips on surviving a recession. Whether you are in the U.S. or somewhere else, recession or recession like existence is palpable and is almost with us if not already there. I must confess, since three years ago, I have been on my own “personal recession”. Coping with semi-retirement because of an illness was something I had to deal with, mostly on my own. Friends and former co-workers were busy, my family had their own individual concerns. Being alone helped me once again test my mettle against this temporary financial setback.Wherever and whenever applicable, I had the chance to use in more ways than one, the tips similar to those offered by the author. The fact is, my situation is a work in progress :-) Tips for surviving a recessionBy : Kathleen Pender Face it. The odds of a recession have grown. That's why the Fed slashed interest rates this week and why President Bush and Congress are eager to get checks into the ...

Another Financial Survival Strategy
2008-03-12 08:59:00
Back when I was still traversing the corporate jungle, money issues were a daily common occurence. Issues like I need a new this, I’ve got to have a new that. Things I needed like a new formal attire, because of the job; sudden turn of events that required money, like losing my mobile phone, or losing cash to thieves. Or maybe, the children immediately needing things in school that were not part of the monthly budget. All these conditions certainly required funding.I realized at that point, that being employed didn’t mean freedom from debt at all. Being employed served as a financial crutch, more than anything else. In fact, employment sort of emboldened workers like myself to have more conviction about so many things, like acquiring things for the children or for the home, or taking a much needed vacation and how about this -- taking out a payday loan. After all, there’s the salary and the bonus to cover those unexpected purchases or expenses. The fact is, c...

Cease or get destroyed? The politics of a cause
2008-03-11 09:28:00
Politics of Cause versus the need of the majority: which should be prioritized? The Taliban's war on mobile phones Civilians angered at insurgent attacks on the phone networks that provide them with a lifeline, writes IWPR.By Matiullah Minapal and Zainullah Stanekzai in Helmand, and Hafizullah Gardesh in Kabul for IWPR (10/03/08)The Taliban are flexing their muscles again in southern Afghanistan, attacking what is undoubtedly the most dynamic sector of the economy - mobile phone companies. Over the past week, four transmission masts belonging to different phone companies have been destroyed – two from the country's largest service provider, Roshan, one belonging to its close competitor the Afghan Wireless Communications Company (AWCC) and one owned by the relative newcomer Areeba. The attacks have taken place in Kandahar and Helmand provinces, where the Taliban have their stronghold and hold down large swathes of the countryside. But in targeting mobile networks, t...

Would you rather be alive or monogamous?
2008-03-11 08:35:00
“Monogamy is the custom or condition of having only one mate in a relationship, thus forming a couple. The word monogamy comes from the Greek word monos, which means one or alone, and the Greek word gamos, which means marriage or union. Serial monogamy is having no more than one sexual partner at a time but allows for multiple partners in a lifetime. In western culture serial monogamy is common with individuals before they start a family, due to divorce rates”. A few insects, a few fish, a lot of birds, and a few mammals are socially monogamous. These species did not inherit social monogamy from a common ancestor. Instead, social monogamy has evolved independently in different species. On the Other Hand, in Ghana, research reveals a surprising risk factor for extinction: monogamy. Large mammals that live in pairs or have small harems are far more likely to die out than those with big harems. "In avoiding extinction, it pays to be promiscuous," says Justin Brashares...

Online Citizens Beware
2008-03-11 05:55:00
Relationships are a crucial part of a fulfilling life. Personal relations in the real world are often complicated and being in an on and off toxic relationship for a time, have driven a sizeable number of people -- men and women to give up on developing real world romance. It is in the real world where pain caused by separation and abuse from users, takers, liars, or just plain manipulators can be doubly hurtful and damaging. Is this why people look to the internet as a place to find romantic fulfillment, for a change? However, is it safe to assume that the virtual world is free from the same kind of integrity-challenged individuals? Aren’t there web scoundrels also out there, perverted and easy to escape real world responsibilities in exchange for momentary occasions of online flirtation and excitement? Online citizens beware. If you are in the market for an online relationship it pays to be wary and careful of people you meet on many social networking or c...

Google’s Android Phone

Are we supposed to be happy about this? Finally it is out. iPhone 's competition is here. Read on. BARCELONA (Reuters) - Texas Instruments Inc said on Monday it would demonstrate a prototype cell phone based on Android , the highly anticipated mobile phone operating system being built by Web search leader Google Inc. The U.S. chip maker said the phone it will demonstrate at the Mobile World Congress trade show has "one button access" to key applications such as Web browsing, e-mail, messaging and video, making it easier for consumers to use such features. The device will also allow for the integration of different applications, a capability mostly limited to desktop computers. For example, a real estate agent could combine information from its database with mapping software to let customers easily locate properties on the go, TI said. The prototype handset will run on TI's OMAP850 phone processor, which includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth short-range wireless connectivity. Google ...
Intelligent car, anyone?
2008-02-05 12:05:00
I love intelligent or smart cars . I am sure you would too.'The original idea behind the very short "smart car" was that the vehicle would be easy to park. It is short enough to allow it to be parked "nose-in" where a conventionally sized car would have to parallel park. Its length of 250 centimetres (98.4 in) equals the width of a regular parking slot, allowing two or three smarts to park in the same space as one normal car if parked side-on to the usual parking direction'. Smart Car custom LCB (Lindt chocolate Bunny edition.) 'The project idea was originally started by Swiss watch manufacturer Swatch and was nicknamed the "Swatchmobile". The name SMART is an acronym for Swatch Mercedes ART.[1][2] The car was supposed to use innovative features (such as a hybrid engine) and to be an affordable car for young people. Similar to the objective for the Citroën 2CV in the 1940s, its purpose was to "transport two people and a case of beer". 'Being inexperienced in automobiles, ...

What now Yahoo?
2008-02-04 12:15:00
From this site is the following news release:When Yahoo Inc.’s price tag is $44.6-billion (U.S.) – and that’s the starting bid – it is no wonder that few firms have been touted as potential white knights, able to rescue Yahoo from the clutches of cash-rich Microsoft. But what about News Corp.? Douglas A. McIntyre makes a nice pitch for the idea in his blog for 24/7 Wall St. Oh sure, even after sifting through the lint in its pockets, News Corp. would not be able to come up with a bigger, better bid for Yahoo, and selling off some of Yahoo’s overseas divisions would not ease the financial pain. But with Google Inc.’s help, maybe something could happen. Mr. McIntyre writes: “Google Inc. (GOOG) would almost certainly advance News Corp. a few years of money against having the exclusive search franchise for Yahoo. Google has already given News Corp. guarantees from search results sold on MySpace. What could News Corp. get for the rights? Probably $4-billion a year. A five...

Time to start thinking nothing but Bologna..whopee
2008-01-18 13:53:00
Since I am really determined to go to Bologna , Italy this year, I have to learn as much as I can about the place, primarily its language -- the language of The Godfather :-) No kidding. But first where is Bologna, Italy? I saw several sites and these were what I gathered."Bologna is the largest city in the Emilia-Romagna region, situated between Tuscany and Veneto. Bologna is a jewel of northern Italy, an elegant and sophisticated university town considered by many to be the gastronomic capital of the country. Bologna is a well-preserved medieval city rich with beautiful cathedrals, towers, piazzas and charming narrow streets, painted in dark red and orange colors typical of Northern Italy.Bologna is home to Europe's oldest university, the alma mater of such classical authors as Dante and Petrarch. It is also a contemporary center of student life, popular with young Italians. With relatively fewer foreign tourists, Bologna is an authentic Italian city. For those who maybe truly p...

"During his Macworld Expo keynote address on Tuesday morning, Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the MacBook Air, a computer that the company billed as the world's thinnest notebook -- small enough to fit inside an interoffice mailing envelope. It's priced starting at $1,799 and will be available within two weeks.Sporting a silvery finish, the MacBook Air features a 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display that has a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution. The backlighting saves power and provides "instant on" response from the moment you turn it on, according to Jobs. The device has a slightly wedge-shaped profile. It weighs about 3 pounds, and sports a thickness of 0.16-0.76 inches. It's 12.8 inches wide and 8.95 inches deep. The MacBook Air also features a built-in iSight webcam and a full sized MacBook-style black keyboard. The keyboard is backlit, similar to MacBook Pros, and has an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts brightness. The trackpad is also capable of recognizing mult...

Ushering the New Year with Firecrackers
2007-12-28 15:52:00
Filipino New Year 's eve shall always be celebrated with firecrackers. Adapted from the Chinese, Pinoys believe that the previous year's bad luck should be driven out of one's house and out of one's life with firecrackers and pyrotechnics.I was always aware that firecrackers originally came from China. I didn't know that:"Fireworks originated in China some 2,000 years ago. The most prevalent legend has it that fireworks were discovered or invented by accident by a Chinese cook working in a field kitchen who happened to mix charcoal, sulphur and saltpeter (all commonly found in the kitchen in those days). The mixture burned and when compressed in an enclosure (a bamboo tube), the mixture exploded. Some sources say that the discovery of fireworks occurred about 2,000 years ago, and other sources place the discovery sometime during the 9th century during the Song dynasty (960-1279), although this could be confusion between the discovery of gunpowder by the cook and the invention of...
All I want for the holiday season is a turntable
2007-12-27 15:23:00
Yes, we have been salivating for a turntable for almost three years now. Old technology? Yes, it is. Aside from wanting an iPod, I also want to own again one honest to goodness record player. Back when I was a teen-ager, (and that's a long, long, long, long time ago) my father used to assemble turntables. That is right. He is asseeembling them turntables. He has no electronics degree but he sure can whip up a radio tuner complete with speakers and phonograph players in 3 months. Galing no? (Great huh?)Turntable Basics"Turntables are, in fact, record-playing systems made up of three parts: the main housing, the tone arm, and a phono cartridge. The main body includes the base, the motor, the drive system, and the platter. It supports the tone arm, which in turn holds the phono cartridge. Phono cartridges have a stylus (a.k.a. a needle) that traces the LP's grooves and converts them into an analogous electrical output signal. Each subsystem plays a part in the quality of sound you he...

I know the mood should be 'holidayie'. But not to dampen the merriment, I'd still want to share with you a glimpse of one of my favorite authors, Gabriel Garcia Marquez . He symbolizes HOPE. Which, to me, is what Christmas is all about. You believe so?"Gabriel Garcia Marquez has retired from public life due to health reasons: cancer of the lymph nodes. It seems that it is getting worse. He has sent this farewell letter to his friends, which has been translated and posted on the Internet. Please read and forward to anyone who might enjoy it. This is possibly, sadly, one of the last gifts to humanity from a true master:.If for an instant God were to forget that I am a rag doll and gifted me with a piece of life, possibly I wouldn’t say all that I think, but rather I would think of all that I say. I would value things, not for their worth but for what they mean. I would sleep little, dream more, understanding that for each minute we close our eyes we lose sixty seconds of light. I ...
