It wasn't my fault
2007-12-16 06:16:00
This was -to me- the single best news of the week, so I have to comment on it. I got this from Reuters, through Yahoo! The story goes like this: A Canadian oil-field worker, stunned to get a C$85,000 ($83,700) cell phone bill, has had the charges reduced to C$3,400, but is still fighting them.(His father said that he) thought he could use his new phone as a modem for his computer as part of his C$10 unlimited browser plan from Bell Mobility, a division of Bell Canada. He downloaded movies and other high-resolution files unaware of the charges they would incur. "He's working in the field sometimes, alone, in the shack. What to do? Drink vodka or go on the Internet?" the father told Reuters on Thursday from Calgary, Alberta. Bell reduced the bill to $3,400 "for good will", but still this gentleman refuses to pay.So, we have a guy who bought a cellphone, misunderstood the features of the plan he had subscribed to, and then dedicated his time to do something illegal, like downloading mo...

Facts of life, according to Florencia
2007-12-16 03:38:00
The boys were being grossed by Carolina, because she had dared to imply that they might have drunk milk from their mother's breast. Florencia felt it was time for her to shed some light on this subject:"We all drank milk from Mommy's ...... boobies. That's what babies do!"

Taxi pain
2007-12-15 18:15:00
It happened last night, as I was getting ready to go to my company's Holiday Party. Gaby was busy catering a dinner, so I needed to take a cab to the hotel in which we were having the party. I called Waterloo Taxi , like I normally do. In this case, they even had an agreement with my company, and they would bill them directly instead of making me pay.I called them at 6:01 PM and they asked for directions, as the lady didn't seem to know where my street was. So I give them directions, and they said a car would be here shortly.By 6:15PM, I was wondering if they were coming to the right place, because there are streets with similar names to mine... so I called again. "I read here that the car is two blocks away from your home", the lady said.My cellphone rang at 6:19PM, it was a machine message saying "Your car has just arrived". But I was outside, and no cab was in sight. "That's a message we send where the car is two blocks away", the lady said. "But you told me it was two blocks a...

Have fun with Frank Caliendo
2007-12-14 00:15:00
I found these Frank Caliendo clips not long ago, and I can't stop watching them; he always gets me to laugh.Caliendo is great impressionist; he was part of the cast of MadTV, and now has his own show (called Frank TV) on TBS.Watch his impressions of Al Pacino and George Bush here...A really well done Robin Williams (few would dare to do him!)My favourite impression: Robert De Niro as "Frankenstein"OK, here's a bonus... from his new TV show
Surprise!
2007-12-13 14:49:00
It was my "niece" Tathyana's birthday yesterday, so I called her in the afternoon. As I was on the phone with her, I thought "What if we all go and pay her a surprise visit?". Now let me tell you something, she lives in London (Ontario), which is about an hour and fifteen minutes away from here (on a good day). I had to go back home, get Gaby and the kids ready and leave, and all that on a weeknight. Even worse, me and Gaby had a doctor's appointment at 4:30PM. But we thought nothing of that, so much we love her.I got back home from the doctor's office and found the kids finishing their homework. This meant TV time was getting closer, and you can imagine what the reaction of any kid would be if you told them "Uh, guys... what if instead of watching TV we spend three hours in the car?". Well, the moment I said who we were going to visit, they all jumped in the car in no time. After all, she's not only their "cousin", but also one of her two role models. The trip was long and borin...
"One Thousand Pesos"
2007-12-13 06:25:00
Guillermo found this on a local radio station and alerted me so I would listen to it. It has been running on KOOL FM, especially during the mornings.   They used to have this "Instant teller" contest in which you would play against a machine. If you win and decide to continue, the teller will either offer you more money or 'explode', thus leaving you with nothing.   They have been running this ad, which Guille caught and found hilarious. And truly it is. In it, they say they have tracked the teller and found it in the Argentine Marambio Base in Antarctica... Just click and listen!      Trivia: The base owes its name to Gustavo Argentino Marambio, who flew in Antarctica during the early 50's , taking on some very risky missions. Marambio died tragically in 1953. His cousin, Juan Carlos Marambio Catán, was a singer and composer, author of the lyrics of one of the most well known tangos "El choclo", which you can listen to below. I'm act...

Icycle?
2007-12-12 14:00:00
It happened on Sunday; we were coming back home from church and noticed an icycle that looked like it was growing off the pavement. The only possible explanation for this is that water was dripping from the car and it froze overnight... Other than that, I can't explain this.Santi went belly on the floor and took this cool picture.
Four eyes
2007-12-12 12:27:00
We went to the optometrist yesterday. Yes, the six of us. To make things even worse for the poor doctor, his secretary hadn't been able to make it due to the poor weather, so he was alone...I went in first, followed by Florencia. She behaved like a princess, as usual, and did a great job with the eye examination. Instead of letters, the doctor would show her pictures (a hand, a plane, a car). I was so hoping he would show her a dog, because then she would have had to say the word, which for me means 'permission to tickle her', as I wrote before.Once Flor was done, it was Juan's turn, then Caro and then Santi. Carolina might need glasses in the future, but the doctor wants to rule out growing adjustments as the reason why her left eye didn't seem to be as good as her right one. Other than that, all kids were perfect, and no major changes were done to my prescription either.Gaby was last, and to everybody's surprise (and amusement), she will need reading glasses now! Of course, ...

Watching Florencia
2007-12-12 07:52:00
Me and Gaby went to the kids' school days ago, as we had been invited to spend 45 minutes watching Florencia . The idea seemed odd at first, but I succumbed to temptation. How would Flor behave when we're not (supposed to be) around? We arrived as they were coming back from playing outside. It was cold, and they had been playing in the snow, so they were all wearing snow pants. Florencia was one of the last to come back inside, and we were wondering what her face would be when she saw us. She did see us and... nothing. Just a 'oh, you guys are here' look and away she went to continue with her routine. She must've seen our sad faces, because she came back and gave us a hug and a kiss. They sat around the teacher, and she started taking attendance. She would name the kids and they would reply "Good afternoon". We waited for our baby's turn, and somehow I thought she wouldn't be able to say it. Of course I was wrong, and her pronunciation was 1o times better than my best English da...

Christmas pageant in Kitchener
2007-12-11 06:30:00
We attended the Annual Outdoor Christmas Pageant on Sunday night, organized by Bethany Evangelical Missionary Church in Kitchener. It wasn't our first time, but we were still surprised to see the place so packed. They had to add several rows of seats at floor level, so many people came. According to their website, a total of 12,500 people went there throughout the weekend for a fantastic presentation that was followed by a 'chocolate and cookies' time inside. We went -along with the Zieglers- to the Sunday at 8PM presentation, which was supposed to be the last. But there was so many people in attendance, that they were kind enough to add a last presentation at 9PM, for which we also stayed. Here are some pictures, most of them taken by our son Santi, who seems to have found a new passion in photography...Estuvimos en el Desfile anual de Navidad el domingo a la noche, organizado por la Bethany Evangelical Missionary Church en Kitchener. Bringing my hometown closer
2007-12-10 21:07:00
I'm very happy. A few days ago, I found out that my hometown's radio station (Radio Necochea) was -finally- broadcasting over the internet. Through the years, I had been going to their website, hoping that the hyperlink would actually take me somewhere, so imagine my joy when it actually worked. Now I'm listening to LU13, and even though I will try not to spend too much time in there (I had promised I would listen to local radios more, remember?), Sundays will find me there, listening to the games of my beloved Estación Quequén...

I don't know for sure, but I'd bet this is the first time in history that a president is being succeeded by his own wife. This is happening in Argentina today.Néstor Kirchner is ending his mandate as of today, December 10th 2007. His wife, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner will take over, and will serve as the new (and 70th, according to my calculations) President of Argentina.Former President Néstor Kirchner and President Cristina KirchnerPicture from Infobae.comI might not be 100% in agreement with their line of thought and their actions while in office, but I have to concede that Cristina Kirchner is a very apt, hard working politician. I actually have faith she's going to be a good president.Néstor Kirchner passing the presidential band to his wife, Cristina KirchnerPhoto from Infobae.comFor the good of my beloved Argentina, I hope I'm right this time. For more info, please read this excellent post from the also excellent blog "D for Disorientation", "Cristinian era". Santi had a game with his team in Brampton on Saturday, so there we went. The game was at the recently inaugurated Brampton Soccer Centre, and boy were we impressed...This facility has four outdoor soccer fields and four indoor soccer fields. These ones are just amazing. Great turf, excellent view from the stands, ample and clean dressing rooms, even the prices from the concession stand were great. One of the fields had a glass wall, so people can sit on the other site (they had a few couches there) and watch the game while having a coffee. Really cool. This one was during the warm-upThe game? Oh, Santi's team gave one of their best performances I've seen in a while, and beat Brampton 6-1. Santi played in net, and even though he allowed a silly goal, he did a good job. But we were all talking about the facilities. Brampton is one of the top teams in Ontario, and you can see why.I couldn't take pictures from outside, so check these ones I found in Flickr.Santi in action El equipo d...

Things you should not bring on board
2007-12-07 23:41:00
I just saw this as I was going through the security check here at Hartsfied-Jackson Airport in Atlanta. We were moving so fast that I didn't have time to take a good picture, so I'm borrowing one from this site. There was a display case showing examples of what not to bring onto the plain with your carry-on luggage. This plastic case includes items like a can of gas, a propane blow torch (...), and a chainsaw.Seriously. A chainsaw. As I said, I was so sorry that I couldn't have time to take a better picture. Isn't that awesome? People must have been caught smuggling a chainsaw in for them to put it there!!!So now I have to look for another Christmas gift for the boys. Sheesh.Sorry, the picture is still bad, but it's way better than the one I took... A wild display of Christmas lights in Columbus, GA
2007-12-07 23:27:00
This video is from last year, but I went looking for it because I'd swear I drove by this place last night...The music is "Christmas Eve / Sarajevo" by the Trans Siberian Orchestra. This has been done before, and I think it was even more spectacular than this one. The most famous case -if not the first- happened in Mason, Ohio, where the owner ended having to shutdown the display because of the complications that caused to the local traffic. Here is link to that video).

Two pictures...

...and three extra comments.Sorry, I know the picture is bad, but it will illustrate my point nevertheless. I took this one from the hospital at Fort Benning. You won't see any snow, of course, but you won't see any fall colours either (or maybe just a few). It looks like we're two or three months behind Waterloo here in Georgia...- - - - - -I don't have to go to the hospital tomorrow, so I will work from the hotel in the morning and then leave to Atlanta at around noon. My flight is at 8:00 PM or so, but I still rather go early and spend 5 hours waiting there, than to leave at 3 and then be caught in rush hour and suffer thinking I won't make it. Let's not forget that I will be going to the busiest airport in all the Americas on a Friday, two weeks before Christmas weekend... Oh, by the way, I had a good day today.- - - - - -I found the biggest shopping centre I have ever seen today. There were more stores that I could even see, including WalMart, Sears, Circuit City, Barnes ...

I had a good day today. Those in which you: a) accomplish little things but that teach you a lot and b) accomplish other things that seem little at first but then you get lots of recognition for. So I'm really happy tonight! Here are a few notes I took today:I told my co-workers about my 'parking luck'. Every time I go to a crowded place with Gaby (mall, supermarket) I find a parking spot right in front of the door, which she hates me for. Of course, I needed to prove my colleagues that I wasn't bluffing, and boy did I! I found a spot that was the closest possible to the hospital, in a huge parking that was virtually full.We went to a mall inside of the fort for lunch. The place was new, so it looked impeccable. I was distracted by the prices at some video games store. They had refurbished X-Box systems for $39.99 and GameCube systems for $79.99.I'm still thinking about the first bullet. I love it when research pays off!I went out for a ride with my car, and ended crossing the b...

The longest trip (Part 12)
2007-12-06 04:27:00
(Continues from here)It was pretty obvious after my conversation with my manager that I didn't have a job anymore. While I was getting closer to the date in which I would be able to get up for the first time in months, I called Rolando again and broke the news to him. His answer was typical: "Gabriel, I will still pay you until you're released and discharged, and the hospital tells me you're able to work again. Then I will find you another job, probably in IBM". Once again, what a guy.One of the first things I did when I was finally able to get out of the bed was to go to Gaby's store. There, she and her brothers placed me on a big scale they had, which revealed that I had lost 18 kg (40 lb) in a little over two months. My right leg was still as thin as my arm, and I was not touching the floor with it (I was on crutches). I started physiotherapy and it was painful and hard. Many times I thought of giving up, and then I saw something that amazed me:A neighbour had suffered a st...

Ana, Nata, Ale Marge and others were asking me about my singing, and poor them, they wanted to listen to me! I looked at the CDs and DVDs I have here, and could not find any of my recordings as a soloists. So, for now, here you have three Christmas Carols by a great choir I'm proud to still call myself a member of, even though I haven't sung with them for a year and a half now, The Renaissance Singers. Between us, I'm planning to return for the May 2008 concerts.Of course, I sang on all three. And my voice can be clearly heard in "En los brazos...", as I'm the only one who actually speaks Spanish... Here's a quick list of things I observed or happened to me during my first couple of days in here: People in here are very friendly. I spent more time saying 'hello' to everybody than when I'm back home. Something funny happened to me when I went to the mall by the hotel. People were looking at me smiling, as if I were somebody famous. I wondered if I looked like somebody from the local TV or something (or if my fly was open). It took me just one day to get used to the Southern accent. It's very nice to hear. The hospital is in a military base, so I have to show my ID every morning in order to get my daily pass. Once I am in, however, I can go wherever I go and nobody will ask me any questions. I'm here with two colleagues from USA, one from Nashville, Tennessee and the other one from Jackson, Mississippi. We went out for lunch together (in my car); there's a bowling alley and a shopping mall nearby (both inside of the base). They're pretty knowledgeable and have been to ...

News to warm my heart
2007-12-05 03:33:00
(From Ecos Diarios, Necochea, ARG and NecocheaNet)The "Alfredo Marcenac" Civil Association has started a plan called "Say yes to peace" in which kids between grade 4 and 6 participated of games and a giant paint-a-thon. But the most important thing is that they encouraged the kids to turn their toy guns in, receiving real toys in return.Nothing better than that. God knows I have never bought a gun or any other violent toy to any of my kids, and I normally turn down any gifts that are like that. To find out that something like this is going on in my hometown makes me really proud, even though I know that -as it usually happens down there- it's a reaction instead of a precaution.Oh, and by the way, have you checked my home country's brand new portal, Argentina.ar?(Del Ecos Diarios, Necochea, ARG y NecocheaNet)La Asociación Civil "Alfredo Marcenac" lanzó un plan llamado "Decile sí a la paz" en el que chicos de cuarto a sexto grado participaron de juegos y una gran pintada. My blog buddy Biddie gave me an award yesterday, and it's my first! I am not sure I deserve this, but her words for me were very kind, and I'm as happy being her blog buddy as I hope she is. If your English is good, I strongly recommend you take a look at her blog and read her stories. And don't forget to take a look at the pictures of her beautiful girls! Now onto the difficult task of picking 7 recipients of this award. I will surely leave people out, and for that I apologize in advance. I'm assuming I can't pick Biddie, because she would definitively be one of my recipients. Here's my list (in no particular order, except the first one):Guillermo: He's a good friend, and dedicates a good part of his time to help prospective immigrants and newcomers to Canada with his fantastic -and very popular- blog. He has helped me as well, giving me tips and tricks to make my blog at least a little interesting.Arturo: His blog, "¿Cómo es Canadá?" is always interesting, I love reading i...

If you read it you will know why.Oh, by the way, I slept well last night. The mask is just slightly broken, so it still does the job. It's 1:00 AM. I'm very tired (I've been up since 3:30 AM yesterday) and I'm about to go to bed. That's when I find out that the mask of my CPAP device (which I need because of my sleep apnea) got broken during the trip here (it was inside of my luggage, so I guess they just threw it around just too hard).I fixed it how I could, but it looks it's going to be a long night. Crap. I'm in Columbus, Georgia , and I will be here for the whole week.On Friday afternoon, I was asked if I could come over to assist the people at a military site, so I got up at 3:00 AM today and flew off Toronto at 7:00; the flight was uneventful, though the plane was just too small for a person my size.I arrived in Hartsfield-Jackson Airport at around 10:30 AM. This is probably the busiest airport I have ever been to. I had to take a train from where I got off the plane to where I picked up my luggage, and then a bus to the place where I picked up the rental car. To give you an idea of how big these rental car places are, I went in, picked my car from a lot and then proceeded to check out. There were eight cabins at the exit, which means eight lines. Each line had at least six cars...I got a nice Saturn Aura...I drove for a little over two hours, and finally got to the hotel at 1:30 PM; then I called the hospital. Since the person I was going to see was leaving in just one hour, I w...

I was sitting on the sofa, just watching TV. Juan was right next to me, and so was Florencia. Flor started to walk backwards, unaware that the stairs were right behind her."NO!" I yelled. But it was too late, I saw Flor disappear from my sight, bouncing down the stairs. We both run to her, and Gaby got there as she was getting up. Miracolously, she seemed unhurt, except for a bump on her forehead and a bleeding nose. After having checked her, we turn our attention to Juan. He was pale as a sheet of paper, so impressed he was (he watched Flor's entire fall). Once we made sure he wouldn't faint, they all turn their attention to me... but in the end, we were all fine.Half an hour later, we were at church, and Florencia was ready to dazzle everybody.Show must go on... His first goal
2007-12-02 04:05:00
Well, technically, I should say it was Santi's first goal as a member of the Waterloo Warriors, because he did score for them last summer, but he was playing as a guest (remember my post titled 'never give up', back in July).Santi's team played in Vaughan, ON again today and tied 3-3 against Brampton East "A". A pity, because even though they played really bad, they were leading 3-1 with 12 minutes to go. Santi played badly during the first half, but had a great pep talk from his coach and went in to have a fantastic second period. He scored quite a nice goal coming from the right side. I took a picture of the second before he hit the ball...With only 10 seconds to go, an unfortunate play by the goalkeeper allowed Brampton to tie, and our guys left the field very disappointed. But hey, they're still undefeated.Santi has a great post about the game in his weblog, here's the link.Técnicamente, debería decir que fue su primer goal formando parte de los Waterloo Warriors, ya que...
