Even Dogs In The Wild...
2008-01-07 22:30:00
Yesterday afternoon we whiled away a few hours on the Isle of Dogs , heading along the river from Mudchute to West India Quay. Along the way we encountered many of the interesting sculptures and installations that seem to appear about every 100 yards on the island, and which have been springing up for about the last 20 years. Check out the sculpture of the looped bends in the river which was

Riverside Repast
2008-01-04 21:36:00
Well, yesterday evening I finally had a meal at my friend Rob's restaurant on Mortlake High St, near Barnes Bridge, The Depot Waterfront Brasserie. It's a fantastic venue, really chic inside, very imposing outside and it has tables at one side of the restaurant that almost sit "over" the Thames. You can even see the finishing post for the Oxford-Cambridge boat race from your seat... not sure

Gerry Anderson Special on BBC4
2008-01-03 01:19:00
There was a special on BBC4 tonight celebrating the work of Gerry Anderson , starting off with SuperCar and ending with Space 1999. Many moons ago I was fortunate enough to be a friend of one of his nephews, whose flat in Birmingham was strewn with actual puppets from the various shows... not something you forget easily! Strangely, there was no mention of the Thunderbirds movie or my favourite,

Bridge To Nowhere
2007-12-31 12:55:00
If you get off the DLR at Gallion's Reach there's a strange sight looking from the end of the westbound platform. It's a substantial roadbridge which just ends in thin air. This was to be (and may still turn out to be) a slip-road for the much needed East London River Crossing, which came out of an earlier project called 'Ringway 2' which, back in the 80s, was intended to supplement the

Podcast Update 2
2007-12-29 00:31:00
This week has seen two releases from the BBC Friday Night Comedy podcast people - there's an edition of the "News Quiz" from Sandi Toksvig and team, and a special awards ceremony edition of Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis's "Now Show". I love BBC comedy material, it's always of the best quality, and both of these are "laugh out loud on the tube" funny - cue

The "Eyes" Have It
2007-12-27 09:22:00
Here are some photos taken on Boxing Day of Julie Mathias and Wolfgang Kaeppner's art installation in Jubilee Park, Canary Wharf. It consists of 100 sets of animal eyes set around and about the park. At night, they're illuminated by lighting designed by Admir Jukanovic, so that they look like animals caught in headlights... From Canary Wharf ...Oh, and there's a gratuitous shot of two reindeers

Happy Christmas, Doctor
2007-12-25 21:08:00
But I'm not terribly optimistic for the New Year. The Doctor Who Christmas Special today was a *titanic* disaster - really poor writing and lots of hammy overacting and hackneyed one-liners - even Queenie got a very corny look-in, and there were a few bars from "My Heart Will Go On"...! Ah well, at least today marks the day when the Queen finally entered the 21st Century, with a YouTube Channel

The Inland Sea
2007-12-24 22:17:00
Here's a photograph that I took yesterday as thick fog blanketed the valley that sits below Dudley to the west. The large "islands" you see emerging from the fog in the far distance are the Malverns, which are 1395 feet at their highest point. It's an interesting sight, as it might have looked like this during the Silurian period, when Wren's Nest, the wooded hill in the left middle distance
Angel St
2007-12-21 00:43:00
I was down in South Molton Street this evening, exchanging gifts with a friend and having a chat over a coffee. I can't afford to shop in the little boutiques down there, but they obviously clear enough profit to put on an amazing christmas light show. These angelic beings were lined up all the way down the street. Check them out if you're heading down Oxford St for some last minute Christmas

Secret Santa & The Evil Elves
2007-12-21 00:17:00
Photographic evidence was produced in court today proving that Santa carries a lethal weapon without a licence. Juggling elves interrogated this afternoon at Caramel in Wilton Road, Victoria, admitted that Santa openly carries his weapon when delivering presents. Without prompting, they also said that the food was rather good, with the dessert course being a real winner. The vacumming duck

Turkish Delight
2007-12-18 22:36:00
Today I went to a wonderful Turk ish Restaurant in Victoria, Kazan, with colleagues from my old team at work. I was here for a Christmas do this time last year, and once again the food was absolutely excellent - a great plate of mezes to start including my favourite, houmous with little cubes of fried lamb and pine nut kernels. The main course was a mixed kebab with rice and salad, polished off

Podcast Update
2007-12-18 00:48:00
I've listened to a few of my favourite podcasts today. On this week's TWiT, John C Dvorak almost expires eating macadamias and cashews, it's the 60th anniversary of the invention of the transistor, and there's news that Wiis and the Amazon Kindle e-book reader are selling for heaps of cash on Ebay Cammy and Leo Laporte discuss the merits of fruitcake on the Munchcast. Talking of fruitcake, this

Smoke - A London Peculiar
2007-12-17 11:57:00
Fantastic - I've just subscribed to Smoke magazine and the first issue just turned up - it's number 11. A nice pocket-sized A5, it's a glossy little number and has a lovely series of articles and essays accompanied by some great photography. There's even a full page "advert" for free London newspapers - I think the editor has a similar view on those rags to mine... Why not check out their site -
St Pancras International
2007-12-17 01:43:00
From St Pancras De...Hmm, I was at the new station this week. After all the hype I expected rather a lot more - most of the shops in the 'Undercroft' are still just hoardings, and the front of the station is still an utter mess of skips and portacabins as they work feverishly on the new hotel and luxury apartments. Even if I had the cash I still wouldn't want to live there though... the drunks,

Cute & Fluffy
2007-12-17 01:07:00
Sometimes I'm so soft I frighten myself - I subscribe to the RSS feed from ICanHasCheezburger.com, the website with the oh-so-cute pictures of cats with amusing lolcat-speak captions, and unfortunately for me, sometimes they really are oh-so-cute. Here's today's top scorer: moar funny pictures Look at his cute little eyes, and his cute little paws. I think I'm going to be sick...

Millwall Docks
2007-12-17 00:48:00
OK I'm cheating, the photos referenced here I took last week, but I do find myself around the periphery of Millwall Docks pretty often these days (you know who you are x ) Sometimes (although unfortunately not in the particular images I took on this rather stormy Sunday a little earlier this month) the vast expanse of water is as still as a millpond, so the towers of Canary Wharf appear doubled.
A beginning

Well after a meeting in Nottingham on Monday with the DC10 and inspirational words from Euan Semple, here I am, posting for the first time in my new blog, from the edge of the Olympic Zone 2012. Thoughts, photos, ideas and links coming to your screen very soon...
