The Southbank & A Pile of Bricks
2008-05-05 00:10:00
Our plans changed a bit today. We had intended to go the Canalway Cavalcade down in Little Venice, but as DiamondGeezer had blogged about it extensively yesterday we thought we'd do something different. So, we headed to Waterloo to take a look at the Cans Festival, but when we turned the corner onto the street where it's taking place, we were greeted with this: We didn't think we were going to

Iron Man
2008-05-04 00:45:00
Well we went to see Iron Man this afternoon. It's a rather good film, Robert Downey Jr's portayal of the hedonistic industrialist Tony Stark has a lot of depth, as does Gwyneth Paltrow's role as Pepper Pots. The SFX are particularly breathtaking. For the real Iron Man fans, the film also introduces S.H.I.E.L.D and War Machine (well the latter is at hinted at anyway) If the film has any faults
Oh London...
2008-05-03 00:19:00
My faith in the people of this great city of ours is diminished slightly by the very likely outcome of the Mayoral election - I thought my fellow city-dwellers had a little more sense. Ah well, here comes a completely screwed-up transport system (can you imagine central London without a congestion charge?), union unrest, and what's going to happen in terms of Mayoral relations with
Sci-Fi London Film Festival goes into orbit this weekend
2008-05-01 23:33:00
Although it started a little earlier this week, the Sci-Fi London Film Festival kicks into high gear this weekend with a whole slew of events, including 3 separate all-nighters on Saturday, one dedicated to anime, one to classic sci-fi, and one to those B-movies you wish you'd never seen. The second of the three looks like my kind of thing, with back to back screenings of Alien, Pitch Black,

Cute & Fluffy #6
2008-05-01 23:23:00
I've forgotten to mention that when it comes to cute online picture sites, ICanHasCheeburger (aka the lolcats site) doesn't have it all its own way. You can also visit IHasAHotdog which has a bit more of a canine air about it :) Here's one of today's posts for your enjoyment...

National Digital Inclusion Conference 2008
2008-05-01 00:51:00
The title of this post doesn't sound very interesting does it? In fact I suppose if you're not in the know it sounds positively stuffy. Well would it surprise you to know that only two-thirds of the population go online, including under a third of people over 55, and that this situation hasn't changed for several years? Amongst other things, that's what 'digital inclusion' seeks to address. You

After Battlestar Galactica...
2008-04-29 00:40:00
The TV Addict has put up a post concerning a script that has been leaked, which appears to be the initial episode of a new series called "Caprica" (which there have been rumours about for ages) that looks at life in the 12 colonies of the Battlestar Galactica universe before the cylon attack. Unsurprisingly, it appears to focus on the life of the Adams family (or should that be the Adama family.
Funky Online Video Creation Made Easy
2008-04-29 00:19:00
Take a look at this video which I put together in five minutes flat a little earlier this evening - it's an animated slideshow of some shots I took while wandering around Malbork Castle in Poland a little earlier this month (which I really must blog about btw!) set to some free-to-copy music. I used Animoto. All you have to do is go to their site, signup, find some photos you want to use,

We had an early start today, so that we could get to Columbia Road Flower Market while it was still in full flow. Just off Bethnal Green Road, the market started in the mid 1800s but has concentrated on flowers and houseplants since the 1960s. It runs every Sunday from 8am until 2pm, and you can buy anything on the stalls from potted palms to tulips . There are lots of cute little cafes and

Sci-Fi Classics #3
2008-04-26 00:49:00
This time it's 'Dune' - no, not the piece of rubbish perpetrated by Dino de Laurentis in 1984 that bore no relation whatsoever to the Frank Herbert novel of the same name, but the mini-series produced by the Sci-Fi Channel from 2000 until 2003, which adapts 'Dune' and the following two novels, 'Dune Messiah' & 'Children of Dune'. These versions remain much truer to the originals than the film

Ubuntu Hardy Heron is Released Today!
2008-04-24 20:21:00
Well I'm unable to attend the launch in London's Soho this evening, but just to let you know that today marks the release of Ubuntu 8.04, codenamed the 'Hardy Heron'. Ubuntu is an alternative linux operating system which you can use on your PC or laptop instead of (or as well as) Microsoft Windows, and I use it all the time on my home computer. You can check it out and download a version to try

Battlecats Galactica
2008-04-23 20:14:00
Well they've done it now - LOLCats have finally invaded Battlestar Galactica - check this link. My favourite is the one above, a reference to Commander Tigh :) As you may know, Series 4 has started over in the States and is being broadcast almost simultaneously on Sky One (or you can watch it using other means, if you don't have Sky like me *cough*). The series already has shocking
River Tales
2008-04-23 00:44:00
Just out of curiosity, our Sunday walk this last weekend started at Greenwich and, without any forward planning, we decided to head west along the riverside towards Southwark. We passed through three boroughs altogether, and weren't expecting a lot of what we found... The first curiosity we came across was a monument to Tsar Peter I of Russia, better known as Peter the Great. Apparently as a

The Hustings
2008-04-22 01:36:00
Well I'm back after a protracted break - blame the fact that I spent a few weeks tinkering with a new PC I've just built which allows me to play all those games that had been sitting on the shelf for months... somehow doing anything productive with my machine just went out of the window! I'm better now, unless a Little Sister creeps out from under my computer that is…Anyways, on Saturday morning
Nos vacances à Bruxelles - Overall impressions
2008-03-25 22:40:00
Well we're back from Brussels. I don't know why people say that it's a boring destination - we were there for four days and didn't get to see everything we wanted to see. There are as many museums as there are in London, restaurants and chocolate shops everywhere, and lovely little 'estaminets' that serve traditional belgian beers and food (more about those later). It is a rather expensive

Beer, Chocolate, Sleet & Snow
2008-03-20 17:54:00
Well there'll be no blogposts for a few days because I'm off to Brussels for 'le weekend'. The BBC weather report says sleet and snow are predicted with a minimum temperature of -6C on Saturday night, so there'll be a lot of nipping in and out of warm little bars I'm sure. There'll be some extensive blogging as soon as I return so watch this space :) Happy Easter readers!

TimeOut Pub Quiz
2008-03-19 20:33:00
I was invited by Annie Mole of the London Underground blog to be part of the team of London bloggers, "The London Pigeon Collective", at TimeOut's "So you think you know London?" pub quiz, which took place @ ULU last night. The team consisted of Annie, Jonathan Justice (one of Annie's regular contributors, looking very fetching in a silk Mandarin jacket), Whatleydude (thanks for the phone tips

Who?
2008-03-18 00:31:00
I was over in East Ham this afternoon, on a visit to my dentist (ouch!). It wasn't all bad news though, because right opposite the tube station (it's on the District Line) is the Who Shop! I know that these days most shopping parades in our fair city are cookie cutter affairs of endless kebab shops, hair salons and places desperate to sell you mobile phones (well when you get out of the 'Greater'
Underground Treasures
2008-03-16 22:27:00
Today was one of those days when you didn't want to be out in the elements in London, as it was cold and very, very windy. That limited our choice of destination for the Sunday walk, so we opted for somewhere warm. We ended up underground, in the shopping precincts that sit below street level in Canary Wharf. Although there are a handful of stores outside, the real shopping experience in

Love Beer
2008-03-14 19:48:00
On Wednesday evening I went with a few friends to the "London Drinker Beer & Cider Festival 2008", held at the Camden Centre just behind Camden Town Hall (which isn't really in Camden proper - its on the opposite site of the street from the rather grand St Pancras Station on Euston Road). I should really have blogged about this earlier, because if you're reading this now its probably too late to

Cooling the Tube
2008-03-12 23:36:00
Last night I went to the "Cooling the Tube " talk by Kevin Payne, director of the engineering programme at TfL, which took place at the Building Centre on Store St as part of their exhibition that runs until April 19, "Underground - London's Hidden Infrastructure". If you go during the day you can look around various exhibits, view slide shows and so on, so I may well nip down there again soon to
Limehouse Basin
2008-03-10 01:55:00
We spent a short time today down in Limehouse Basin, which is one of the last inner London docks that's on my list to visit. The next photographs you see of moored boats will be rather further afield. If I say mussels, chips, chocolate and beer can you work out where I'm going to be blogging from? Limehouse Basin sits just to the west of the Isle of Dogs and can be easily reached by public
Completely 'Overpowered'
2008-03-09 23:18:00
On Saturday evening I went to see Roisin Murphy at the Roundhouse in Camden Town. It's probably best to start by mentioning something about the venue. The Roundhouse started life as a railway engine shed in 1846, but when I first moved to London many moons ago and lived in Camden Town it was a empty shell, having failed as an arts venue back in 1983. After several abortive attempts to get it
Little Star Wars
2008-03-07 00:44:00
Ever wondered what happens when you introduce a 3 year old to the Star Wars saga? Click on the arrow to find out (and I'll leave you to work out who the 'shiny metal guy' is supposed to be)
Nokia N95 phone isn't a phone according to Vodafone, it's a modem...
2008-03-05 20:45:00
Well I'm in dispute with Vodafone at the moment. They charged me over £90 for data that was downloaded to the phone over a period of 5 minutes in mid January.... On my first call to complain they said they'd fix it, and then a month later they've still not sorted out my bill and now insist that the charges are legitimate, stating that I used the phone as a 'modem' to download the data. This is

Out of Darkness Cometh Light
2008-02-20 21:28:00
The motto that forms the title of this post is the one adopted by the City I visited today; Wolverhampton, in the West Midlands. The City (a town until the year 2000, when it became one of the millenium cities, along with Brighton and Inverness) was founded around 985AD by Lady Wulfruna, a powerful Saxon noblewoman of Mercia. A statue of the Lady, proudly displaying the charter for the town

Ahhh Torchwood
2008-02-18 21:12:00
Ok, I've come to the party quite late, but I've finally been pointed towards the adventures of the 'Torchwood Babiez'. Unlike the real thing, it's funny, the stories are rather good, and there are even convincing plot twists. No completely gratuitous sexual references either - it's actually safe for kids (are you listening Russell T??). The art and scripting are by the amazing team of 'jigglykat'
Longitude 0° 0′ 0"
2008-02-17 20:47:00
Where did we go this weekend? Read on... Today, we went to Greenwich. We didn't do the normal tourist thing of trudging up to the Royal Observatory but instead, we walked up One Tree Hill, which is just next door. At the top you're almost level with the Observatory, and although there are a lot more trees these days, as you'll see in the album, there are some great views over London. From the

Moo!
2008-02-16 23:50:00
I'm going to the London Bloggers Meetup later this month, at the Camel & Artichoke in Waterloo. I've been looking for something to hand out when I'm there, and hunting around the net I could only find the boring, corporate business card sites. Yes, some of them do interesting stuff like clear, frosted plastic business cards but they're ridiculously expensive. But now I've come across moo.com,
Jumper? More Like a Tanktop...
2008-02-16 23:40:00
We went to see "Jumper " at West India Quay this afternoon. I wish we hadn't bothered. The concept was interesting, but the execution was terrible. There was barely a story, and I related to the main character about as much as I would for a merchant banker; he was completely self-obsessed and egotistical - and the audience were supposed to empathise?? God knows how Samuel L Jackson got involved
