Theme: RespectThis is a really awesome book and a wonderful activity-&-information0-filled website. It's marketed as a place for kids with spina bifida to go to learn and grow. But I really think it's a great site for any child - disabled or not - to visit.Teaching all kids everywhere to respect the differences of others and to not be afraid of those potential friends who may look, act, or move around a little differently than themselves. How cool is that?!

Rejoice, Reflect.... Relax
2007-09-16 16:08:00
Friends - today is the day!Today is the day to Rejoice, for we have been sent word of a wonderful new website - Disaboom.com. A website aimed at disabled adults seeking information, support, and friendship. The site is up and running already with a ton of interesting articles, blogs (like mine!) and communities. By the end of September it will make its official premier and be a true thing of beauty. Disaboom.com - Transforming the way people living with disabilities communicate.Today is the day to Reflect. For, as a member of the Disaboom blogging community, I am presented with the perfect opportunity to sit back and remember all the things that got me to who I am today - the loving and capable mama (who happens to have spina bifida) of my healthy and active Sweetie.See, here at Sweetie & Me, I'm mainly writing about the here and now. And the reality of that is moving much more toward plain ol' "mom stuff" and somewhat away from the "disabled" mom stuff. Yes, of course my spin...

Sweetie's big thing to work on these days (so sayeth her parents) is Listening. Ugh! How the stubborn child doth like to fight and ignore... ignore and fight! All the live long day.To try to teach her about listening in a fun and interactive way, she, Daddy and I played Simon Says last weekend. (well - Daddy and I called out the commands while Sweetie tried to keep up with us).Long story short - Simon Says did not go so well. She didn't listen close enough to hear if Simon really told her to do something or not. It actually may have been partially our faults, though. I think we may have given too many Simon Says commands in a row before finally throwing one in without the necessary prefacing words. At one point I was so fed up with her just not getting it that I found myself being short with her, saying....Sweetie, this is not a ga......! I mean. I know we're playing a game here, but we're also trying to teach you something. You need to listen much better to hear whether or not S...

One morning while in Hershey, we went outside our hotel to catch the shuttle bus to Hershey Park. And we were surprised to see a really. long. line.Oy!Admittedly, we were lucky the previous times we'd used this service - getting to the pick up/drop off spot just in time to hop on the bus before it took off for its destination. Perfect timing! But not this go-round. No sir.Having read the large sign in the entranceway of our hotel, we knew that the shuttle came by every 30-40 minutes. So who knew if we were joining the line close to the arrival of the next bus or just after the last bus took off? We'd just have to wait and see.At any rate, from our far back position in the line, we figured that even when that next bus showed up, we wouldn't make it on anyway. And we were right.Oh well - we'll get on the next one for sure.Grumblings and kvetching continued all around us, but Hubby and I just stood and waited. And Sweetie was surprisingly patient as she quietly stood and waited with...

Theme: AmbivalenceOne behavior of mine that I'm none too fond of (although I tend to think most moms do the same thing) is this - upon hearing the "wondrous" milestone-surpassing achievements of nearly any child, I - somewhat completely beyond my control - feel I MUST put in my own two cents about the wondrous milestone-surpassing achievements of my Sweetie. That is - I act completely ambivalent and unimpressed with whatever the other child's skill is and am all, like, Oh, Sweetie does that/did that too. In fact, most kids I've seen about that age can do that. It's not really so amazing - except, you know, it IS amazing that Sweetie can do it. But not your kid. Psssshhh. Whatever.Ummmm. That's bad, huh? Not very nice of me, right? But - on the other hand (come on, you can admit it) - it's so totally true!I think moms (well, parents in general) absolutely pull out all the stops when discussing their kids with each other. - Oh, Tommy could read at 2 1/2 years old! - My, that's ...

Sweetie Saturday #73 - Multi Media Sweetie Edition
2007-09-08 15:04:00
Ummm..... I don't think it's much of a secret that Sweetie watches more than her fair share of T.V. At home on the weekends we try to fill our days with other activities. But evenings and Nana Days seem to have a lot to do with all things T.V., videos and the like.So of course, for the last 3 weeks or so, Sweetie has been asking me almost every day,When is Labor Day, Mama? Why? Because that's when the "all new" kids shows start on our local public TV stations.Sweetie, in fact, had been so excited for Labor Day to finally get here that I once asked her (jokingly)...Is Labor Day your favorite holiday? And she answered (seriously and enthusiastically)...Yes! Because all the new kids shows start!Come last Monday when the Big Day had arrived, Sweetie happily watched all the great programs - Super Why, Word World and new episodes of Curious George.Looking at my happy, learning-curious little girl, I leaned over to give her a kiss.Happy Labor Day, Sweetie.Happy Labor Day, Mama - as I got ...

Lots and Lots of Not Very Much
2007-09-06 04:09:00
Uhhhh.... so..... it's Wednesday already, huh? That's nice. I guess to many of you it feels like a short week, what with the holiday and all. But not me - I have Mondays off from work anyway, and I took my Labor Day holiday off from work last Thursday. So this week is just same ol', same ol' to me. Bummer.So... can't really think of anything to post about tonight. And believe me, I've been trying to come up with something.Oh! I could write a funny post about how I think all my aches and pains and medical annoyances and life-in-general-hassles are related to spina bifda. Yeah! They've just gotta be, right? Well, no.I could write about the back and forth discussions Hubby and I have been having over the last few weeks about what to do with Sweetie and her education for the next two years. Does she move up now to the next level at her private day care center, thus solidifying the decision that she must go to public kindergarten next year? Or do we have her repeat the Pre-K progr...

Theme: LullabyHmmmmm..... of all the themes to trip me up, who'd have thought that it would be this one?We all love music so much - especially Sweetie. It's so funny to hear her singing along to the radio (pretty accurately, too) and/or coming up with her own little ditties. She's such a dramatic little performer that, once she reaches the proper age, Hubby and I are definitely going to get her into some local children's theater. But calming songs - lullabies - now that's not something Sweetie's interested in. At least not these days.As I know I've mentioned here before, there used to be a song I'd sing to Sweetie when she was an infant. And this song would, without fail, calm her down and lull my over-stimulated babe to sleep. It worked like a charm - as long as I was the one singing it.This was a song Hubby had learned while he studied in France. A friend of his there would play it on the guitar. Hubby liked it so much that he taught me a small portion of the lyrics (since,...

Did someone, somewhere decree that all Sundays are now International Whining Day? Or maybe it's a newly declared American holiday. No? Oh. Okay, then. I guess it's only a "special" day for we three fortunate folks in the House of Sweetie and Me. All I know is that Sweetie sure knows how to do it up right - Every. Single. Sunday.Ugh.Anywho, enough about the whine. Moving on to the wine! (and this time, some not associated with The Traveling Vineyard - although, if I had my druthers, they absolutely would be).Yesterday we hosted Nana and Papa for dinner. This, in exchange for their decorating sense (Nana's) and brawn (Papa's) while we produced our own version of FreeStyle for our living and dining room areas. The rooms now look great and our evening meal together, while meager, was tasty nonetheless. Before the turkey burgers and chips were served, mom and I toasted our furniture-rearranging-successes with a bottle of Root:1 Sauvignon Blanc, 2006 from the Root:1 Winery. Sweetie Saturday #72 - More Hershey's Fun Edition
2007-09-01 14:06:00
When we arrived to our hotel in Hershey, PA last Saturday , we were informed that our room was not yet ready for us. No problem! With four restaurants and a coffee shop in-house, we had plenty of places to explore and ways to keep ourselves busy during our wait.We happily accepted the four large Hershey chocolate bars given to us at the check-in desk and headed to the Cocoa Beanery coffee shop. But not before stopping by the kids' check-in desk where Sweetie was given the chance to guess the number of Kisses in the jar, then sent off with a fun bunch of coloring/activity pages to work on.As Hershey Park is celebrating its 100th birthday this year, there's lots of promotions going on to highlight this big anniversary. On a small scale, this included one of the pages in Sweetie's Hershey activity book asking questions based on the number 100. I'd ask her the questions, then write down Sweetie's answers. Here are a few of my favorites:Question: If I had 100 friends, I would...Sweet...

Sweetie's Big Adventure
2007-08-30 03:14:00
So, what to say, what to say? I feel like I could write several posts about our trip. One just about the traveling. One about the amusement park. Another about the water park. One about the hotel and staff. Something about the food. One about Milton Hershey and his company in general. Of course a huge ode to Hubby for his supreme awesomeness (what with all the driving, lugging, and putting up with 2 tired girls and all). Etc., etc., etc... All, of course, with plenty of pictures.Alas, if I were to do all of that you'd all be in for one loooonnnngggg post. The internet version of the dreaded vacation slide show presentation. With that in mind, I'll do my best to sum it all up as efficiently, and as interestingly, as possible. (still with a ton 'o pictures, though. Sorry). As I mentioned in my last post, our car trip was really pretty good. It helped that, in addition to the towel, activity books, and blanket, we also had these things to keep us all entertained:Lots of great music.Fu...

Mama Monday #72 - A Day Late
2007-08-29 03:33:00
Theme: CooperationAaaannnndddd.... she's back!Sorry about that. We've been away for a mini vacation. But now we're home. Exhausted. But home. How appropriate it is that Cooperation is this week's MSO theme. Because Sweetie was oh so cooperative during the majority of our trip to and from Chocolate Town. Really! I'm not even being a little bit sarcastic. She honestly was, by and large, just great! (of course she was - she's Sweetie!)Nine hours in the car going to Hershey. Seven and a half hours coming back (40 less miles cuz we didn't miss any signage - as we did on the way down - sending us on a detour through the PA cornfields and back roads). And Sweetie hardly peeped at all. She was the epitome of cooperation and loveliness. In fact, one time we complimented her - about half way home - telling her how proud we were of her behaving so well during the long car ride. And that sent her off into a mini whine-fest about how long it was taking. But even this was resolved with a lit...

Sweetie Saturday #71 - Lunch With Friends Edition
2007-08-25 03:47:00
Hey! You'll never guess, but Sweetie and I had lunch with friends this past Monday.Specifically, we met Sweetie's first-ever daycare provider and her 7- year old daughter at Burger King. This wonderful woman (the daughter of someone I used to work with) provided daily care to our Sweetie for the first year of her life, Tuesday through Friday. Her daughter at the time was 3.5 / 4-years old.Even though Sweetie hasn't regularly been cared for at their house since she was a small baby, she still talks about these friends all the time. In fact, she considers this little girl to be her best friend. Amazing! And wonderful. :)Since this little friend of Sweetie's is now 7- years old, I was afraid that she'd be so over Sweetie and hardly give my precocious 4-year old the time of day. Turns out - I had nothing to worry about at all.She and Sweetie greeted each other very enthusiastically. In fact, later that afternoon at home, Sweetie recounted for me,Hey, Mama! (My friend) gave me a hug...

The Sisterhood of the Unraveling Pants*
2007-08-23 03:40:00
* Warning: Pure fluff ahead. I don't know about you, but after the day I've had, I could use a bit of fluff.I own eight pairs of pants. Additionally, I have several pairs of jeans, shorts and capris. But for the purposes of this post, we'll only focus on the eight pairs of business-casual pants that I have to chose from for my daily work wear.1) My light tan pants: The ones I wore today. They fit me well and are in good repair. They're fine.2) My black pants: I love the way these look on me. They're great! But - they're maternity pants. Yes, that's right. Maternity pants. Here's me - skinny-as-anything me - sportin' around town in my fancy pants maternity wear. And of course, since they are maternity, they have a weird thing going on at the waistband. Functional and practical during pregnancy. Not so much useful or attractive when not pregnant. So much so that I can't possible even consider wearing tucked in shirts with these pants. Instead I have to wear loose fitting top...

A magical thing.A rainbow of hope in your heart.Your own secret corner where no one can go,Where the path to fulfillment can start.A dream lures you on, always one step ahead,Until you have caught it. And then...There's always another to capture your soul,And lead your heart onward again.AnonymousMay your dreams forever lead you on your heart and soul's greatest quests.---------------------------------- ---------------------This poem was written on the cover of one of my high school diaries. I loved it so much that I then used it as my senior quote in my graduation year book. And now I'm teaching it to Sweetie, who requests to hear it several times a day. Right now I think she's taking the poem very literally, associating it with the dreams she has at night sometimes. But as she grows I'll be excited to see her revisit the words and message again and again to see how beautiful and inspirational they are, leading her on her own quest for happiness, pe...

I know it's still the summer, but something possessed me the other day to ask Sweetie to start thinking about Christmas. What's she going to tell Santa she wants for Christmas this year? Not 3 minutes later, she had her paper and crayons out, asking me how to spell the words for her letter to Santa. Here it is:And (for all of you who don't read pre-schooler) here's what it says:78 Toy Switches and LightsAccording to Sweetie, this is a toy that looks like the number 78 and it has a switch on it that you can turn to make it louder or softer and turn the lights it has on and off.Okkaaaaayyyyy.Well, Sweetie... I'm pretty doubtful that Santa can find something exactly like that for you, but he could probably swing something like this if you're interested.Yeah. I know. Not quite the same thing, is it? Sorry about that.------------------------------------ ----------------Sweetie's latest creative pursuit has been to learn how to use her safety zizzors better. She's been practicing a lo...

Wanna know a secret? I was a tough babysitter.Honestly - I could be pretty evil. Telling the little rugrats to sit down! and eat! and listen to me! and go to bed!I'm betting that if you're reading this and if you know me in real life, you're probably in a bit of a shock right now. What?! Amy?! Mean?! No way!Way!Just ask Hubby. I don't even think he realized how strict I could be until just a few years back when he and I went to visit my elderly grandparents at their home. We visited during lunch time, and I was very concerned to make sure they were eating enough. I also took note of all the signs the day nurse had put up around their house, reminding them to take their pills and such. So of course I was then all Strict Nurse Lady telling them to take their pills! do their exercises! and eat enough food!Hubby knew right then that, when we had kids, I was definitely going to be the lead disciplinarian. And then... dah, dah, DAH.....Enter Mommy hood.Mama's in the Hood, 'Yo.I am the ...

And by the comments listed so far, we're off to a great debate!I'm excited to get this issue out there, get it talked about some more. Because it's important to not only listen to what others have to say - to viewpoints that may differ from our own. But it's also extremely important to stop, think, and listen to ourselves.Listen close and you'll discover the amazing journey on which your mind, heart and instincts are leading you and those you love. Please take a moment to read this post and then throw in your own two cents. Somehow.Uhhhhh. See. I have this here question for everyone. Actually, it's a debate/discussion I want to kick off. But at the same time, I actually don't want to talk about it very much at all.Because talking about it may result in less security than not talking about it would.Confused yet? I know I am.Soooo.... in a nutshell... here it goes:I'd love to know your take on privacy issues and security regarding parent-written blogs in particular.Do you blog about your kids?Do you use their real name(s)? Why or why not?Do you post pictures of them? Why or why not?Are you and/or your family concerned about the amount of your child(ren)'s information available on your site?Or are you/they more concerned about what goes on in your child(ren)'s day-to-day real life safety levels than about what could theoretically come from blogging about them? How do you feel about bloggers who have different views on blogging security than your own? These are the things I want to know.I know, and read...

Sweetie Saturday #69 - Wise Beyond Her Years Edition
2007-08-11 13:00:00
This past Wednesday was my mom's birthday. Sweetie asked her,So, how old are you, Nana?Oh, I'm really old. I'm 64.No, Nana. Old isn't "old". Old is just a number - like I'm 4-years old.Right you are, Sweetie. Old IS just a number. And do you know how old your great-grandmother is? She's 94!That IS old!------------------------------------- -----------------I don't know if you know this, but Sweetie is so freakin' smart. Most notably is how easily she can get around on the computer. She knows the icon to click to get onto the internet. She knows where her name is in our menu bar (and thus where to click to get to NickJr.com). And she knows where the Google Search field is and how to spell basic words to get her where she wants. For example (and, yes, I did check this out beforehand to see what websites turned up with this word...), she knows to spell "peep" in the search field, which leads her to the top choice in the results of peepandthebigwideword.com.Last weekend Sweetie wa...

Worth The Price Of Admission

You know that Summer Program at Sweetie's school that I grumbled about the other day? The one with no Water Days as well as poor excuses for in-house field trips? Well...Today was Wacky Wednesday at Sweetie's school. That meant inside-out shorts (that were a checkered pattern), a backwards shirt (that was striped), a silly top knot hairdo (that was actually very cute), and a long necklace that looked like a string of tiny Christmas lights. It also meant Build-A-Bear came to her school with all the bear-building accessories a little kid could ever desire. Sweetie proudly brought home her bow-utiful, big bear to introduce to her Teddy, Bunny and Curious George. That bear alone, I'm sure, was worth the extra money I paid for her to participate in this otherwise lackluster Summer Program.Better yet - it all made for one silly, cute, and happy Sweetie.

Theme: MagicalHubby, Sweetie and I just got back from an overnight trip with my side of the family. We went to Colchester, CT to see this. Not exactly our idea of a dream vacation, but it's what my dad wanted. He and mom (and occasionally one or more of my brothers) have gone to the last several annual events. But this year Dad wanted us all to go. And so we did. All 20 of us - 22 including my uncle and his girlfriend who came down for the day. Mom, Dad, brothers, sisters-in-laws, nieces and nephews. Throw in the oldest niece's and nephew's significant others and you've got yourself one big family. So the show itself was more interesting than I thought it would be. About 200 acres of trucks, tractors, piles of dirt for the earth movers to move, vendors and food. It was a gorgeous day and, with a play area for the younger kids, we were able to entertain ourselves there for quite awhile. But for us the best part came later, when we all went out for a big family dinner, then back to t...

Welcome back! Come on in, sit right down, and enjoy some of today's offerings.White: 2005 Steeple Street, ChardonnayThis is a California wine with a California feel. Cool and mellow, dude. That's what's it's all about. I tasted this for the first time a couple weeks ago, right after having tasted a Reisling. Where the Reisling was a bold taste experience, the Chardonnay was refreshing and easy. Described as having a creamy oakiness and full of citrus aromas and flavors, The Steeple Street Chardonnay would pair nicely with fish, poultry and pastas.Red: 2005 Landmark, Grand Detour Pinot NoirHubby and I first tasted this wine at a Pinot Party we had back in May. Each of our guests were to bring along a Pinot to share - Gris, Grigio, Blanc or Noir. One couple brought this Landmark. And not just because it was what they were easily able to find at the nearest convenience store. No - they specifically sought this wine out and were eager for us all to imbibe. Shortly after the Landmark...

Every so often I ask Sweetie a philosophical question. Just to see what's going on in that cute little head of hers, you know? For instance, I once asked her,Where were you before you were born?I don't know, but that's a very good question!More recently - and knowing she now knows she was in Mommy's tummy before she was born - I asked her how exactly she got there.Well, I was a teeny tiny baby and I crawled up your shirt and you opened your mouth REALLY big - like this - and I crawled in your mouth. And you swallowed me into your tummy! And then, of course, on another occasion I had to ask her if she knew what it means to die.It means you turn into a statue forever and ever! (commense with the stiff exaggerated "O" shaped mouth, wide eyes, and rigid arms straight against her sides)Oh, Sweetie. If only the answers were that simple. For now, though, you've got some really great ideas about this big thing called life.
