Save Time and Money Grocery Shopping with a PriceBook
2007-07-07 04:46:00 By Lana Dorazio All of the BIG savings on groceries start with a pricebook. This simple tool will save you THOUSANDS with very little effort on your part. What is a pricebook? A pricebook is a gauge . . . a gauge of the best prices for items you buy. If you have this important record you can always know you are buying things at the best prices, not just what the grocery stores want you to think are the best prices. Stores can get away with selling you overpriced items and telling you it’s a good deal because they control all of the variables. For example, if you walk into a store and see that chicken breasts are regularly $3.99, but today they’re marked down to $2.99, you might decide that’s a great deal! Compared to what? Compared to the inflated price of $3.99 that the store tricked you into believing was a good basis for comparison. That’s why you should not buy things just because they are on sale. If you know by looking at your pricebook, that you have bought boneless s... More About: Shopping , Money , Time , Save , Ping
Are Discount Grocery Stores Safe?
2007-07-07 04:01:00 By Lana DorazioDisco unt grocery stores have received a bad rap. The news media loves headlines like, “Rotten Meat Sold at Discount Store Sends 12 to the ER!” Or, “Botulism in Canned Goods on the Rise! Beware!” Attention-grabbing headlines make news. Unfortunately, while bad meat might make the front page because of one grocery store’s mistake, what about other discount stores? These stores provide quality, safe, delicious food at a discount price day in and day out!I’d like to see the headline, “Discount Grocer Saves Consumers Millions!” or “The Dented Can Nominated for FDA Award of Excellence!” You might think those make-believe headlines are a little over the top, but I don’t believe they are far from the truth. In fact, my investigative reporting bug kicked in this past month, and I decided to settle the issue once and for all regarding the safety of food from discount grocers.First, let’s establish what I am referring to when I talk about a “dis... Most Common Type of Skin Cancer: How to Avoid it; How to Screen for Symptom
2007-07-06 02:08:00 We all know now how to ward off skin cancers by escaping ultraviolet radiation from excess sun. The most common and curable type of skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma, so called because it starts from cells at the base of the skin's outer layer. White people, especially fair-skinned, blue-eyed blondes are most susceptible. Also, people in warm climates are more likely to develop it due to the proximity to the equator. It's important to start applying sunscreen to very young babies and children as well as adults who are exposed to the sun. When spending time in the sun for long periods, it is imperative to re-apply sunscreen frequently (about every 30 minutes,) no matter how high the SPF factor.Three Warning Signs of Basal Cell Carcinoma:1. An open sore that does not heal2. A shiny, lumpy spot or nodule that is white or pinkish to red.3. An irritated area that is rough and itchy and forms a crust. R.I.C.E For Injuries
2007-07-05 14:34:00 If you suffer from a sports related injury, use R.I.C.E. The term stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.Rest - Take a break from exercise or any type of movement that may stress the injured area. A minor injury should be rested for one or two days, while more severe injuries may need longer.Ice - Ice the affected area. Icing reduces pain, limits swelling and bleeding, and encourages rapid healing. Wrap ice in a towel to avoid direct contact with the skin.Compress - Compress the injury with a stretch bandage. Make sure not to wrap it too tight, just enough to support the injured area comfortably.Elevate - Elevate the limb. If possible, try to keep the injured part above the level of the heart. At the very least, try to keep it higher than the hips. This helps limit swelling and also prevents movement of the area that is injured. More About: Injuries

Special detergent to wash your baby's clothes
2007-07-03 03:30:00 Some families choose to wash their new baby's clothes in specialty products like Ivory Snow or Dreft. This means that you would usually wash the baby's clothes separately. This can be quite expensive and the perfumes in some of these laundry detergents may irritate your baby's skin.Other families choose to simply use regular laundry products like Tide or Cheer in the dye and perfume free variety. Then you can always add an additional rinse to help remove the detergent. Care should be taken in the dryer as well. Do not use dryer sheets or other perfumed items that may cause your baby's skin to be irritated. More About: Clothes , Special , Wash , Gent , Cloth

One manic Monday, while I was busy working for the weekend, I overheard him make a careless whisper. He told two of my co-workers, Jack and Diane, that I gave love a bad name.Well, I got so emotional, baby. I told him to say say say what he wants, but don't play games with my heart. He told me it was hard for him to sayhe's sorry and not to worry, to be happy. Then he blamed it on the rain.He was so out of touch. It just took my breath away. I couldn't fight thisfeeling any longer. I asked him, "What's love got to do with it?" Important Rule for Strength Training: Safety First
2007-06-29 06:40:00 Many fitness beginners, intermediates or even advanced weight lifters don't consider safety first. Some good safety tips to keep in mind when strength-training are:1. Keep knees soft (slightly flexed or bent, not locked).2. Wear a weightlifting belt on waist and wrist straps for heavy lifting.3. Always use a spotter for heavy weights.4. Use a slow, pendulum-type motion when lifting rather than a fast up and down jerky motion. The latter can cause muscle tears.5. Make sure you have a friend or spotter assist you with forced repetitions. 6. Wear heavy-duty training shoes for good support on your feet. Flat Feet Can Be Prevented
2007-06-29 05:13:00 Despite the jokes often made about flat-footed people, the condition is serious enough to cause constant pain and bodily stress. Often thought a physical trait that people are born with, flat feet have never been considered a preventable condition. The fact is that all babies are born with flat feet, meaning the foot has not yet developed an arch. In order to prevent your children from having flat feet, it's important to make sure they are fitted with proper shoes that allow their feet to expand while still giving ample support. This allows the arch to develop naturally. Adults with flat feet can be helped but not cured. Being overweight can exacerbate the condition. Aids such as orthodics are insole supports fitted to the foot or bought over-the-counter and placed inside the shoe. If you suffer from flat feet, see an orthopedic M.D. or a podiatrist first before doing anything. More About: Feet , Vent , Flat

The Children Of The Eighties
2007-03-18 18:46:00 We are the children of the Eight ies. We are not the first "lost generation" nor today's lost generation; in fact, we think we know just where we stand - or are discovering it as was we go.We are the ones who played with Lego Building Blocks when they were just building blocks and gave Malibu Barbie crewcuts with safety scissors that never really cut.We collected Garbage Pail Kids and Cabbage Patch Kids and My Little Ponies and Hot Wheels and He-Man action figures and thought She-Ra looked just a little bit like I would when I was a woman. Big Wheels and bicycles with streamers were the way to go, and sidewalk chalk was all you needed to build a city.Imagination was the key. It made the Ewok Treehouse big enough for you to be Luke and the kitchen table and an old sheet dark enough to be a tent in the forest. Stress Management Tips
2007-03-18 15:17:00 For every one hour of work, take a five minute break and stretch, walk, or meditate. With just a few minutes of relaxation (or doing something other than work), you'll increase your physical activity as well as productivity and feel better throughout the day.Spend 20 minutes a day doing something that is relaxing and not work related. Try taking a walk, stretching, reading a book, or doing yoga. These activities can help you keep your energy level up and feel better longer than eating a candy bar, drinking a soda, or eating a bag of chips. If you are experiencing mild depression or anxiety, aerobic workouts such as walking or jogging can significantly improve your mood. Non-aerobic exercise, like weight lifting, can also boost your spirits, improve sleep and appetite, reduce irritability and anger and produce feelings of mastery and accomplishment. Be sure to check with your healthcare professional before you start any new exercise program.Give volunteer work a try. It's a great wa... St. Patrick's Day History and Legends
2007-03-17 16:29:00 WHO WAS ST. PATRICK - The Patron Saint of Ireland?St. Patrick was a Christian missionary credited with the conversion of Ireland from paganism. He lived from the late 4th century A.D. to the mid 5th century A.D., so long ago that it's difficult to separate fact from legend.St. Patrick was born in either Scotland or Wales, the son of Roman parents living in Britain. When he was about fifteen or sixteen, he was captured and enslaved by an Irish chieftain during a raiding party across the sea. He spent several years enslaved in Ireland, herding and tending sheep and swine. It was during his captivity that St. Patrick dedicated his life to God. Legend has it that St. Patrick escaped captivity and Ireland after a dream in which God instructed him to journey to the Irish coast where he found a ship that returned him to his family. After years of religious study, he became a priest. In a document attributed to him known as "The Confession", St. Patrick heard the voice of the Irish in his d... More About: History , Story , Rick , Trick

New studies show that even short bouts of activity can increase your fitness level, especially if you're new at working out.Park and WalkWhenever you have an errand, park your car as far away as you can handle and walk to the store. At the mall, park at the farthest end and walk the length of the mall. Use every opportunity to walk. At the end of the day, it all adds up to better fitness.Crunch in BedBefore you even get out of bed in the morning, do 10 stomach crunches while lying flat on your mattress. Increase daily by one until you get up to 100. Think you'll never get there? Try it. You may eventually have to set your clock to wake up 15 minutes earlier, a small price to pay for a flatter stomach. More About: Daily , Exercise , Suggestion , Dail
