Fair, firm and consistent consequences are important when children misbehav
2007-03-12 22:05:00
All kids misbehave and when they do, they should receive negative consequences. If the consequences are given firmly, fairly and consistently, they will be effective. Two forms of negative consequences include taking away a privilege for misbehavior and adding chores. Some situations are tailor-made for taking away a privilege. For example, if your teenage daughter comes home an hour late, you might remove a part of that privilege by making her come home an hour earlier next time. Always pair the behavior with the consequence to reinforce the relationship between the two. Adding chores is an effective method for teaching responsibility. Chores take time and effort from your child that could be spent doing something fun. Be sure the consequences you assign actually have a negative effect on your child. Pay attention to the effect the consequence has on the behavior you want to5change. If the problem behavior has decreased or ended, you can be sure your child has received an effective...

Staying calm is the biggest challenge for parents when children misbehave.
2007-03-12 16:07:00
There are many things you can do to prepare for the next time your child acts up:Practice positive thinking by interrupting any negative thoughts you may have. Don't take what your child says personally. Don't blurt out an angry response. Instead, take five minutes to think about what has happened. Focus on your child's actual behavior instead of what you think are the reasons for your child's behavior. If you get angry and say or do something you regret, be sure to tell your child you are sorry.

Clutter-Clearing and Your Authentic Self
2007-03-11 23:17:00
By Stephanie Roberts Have you ever felt so discouraged, your life so out-of-control, the universe so unresponsive to your needs and desires, that you couldn't help it: you just had to clean up? By paying attention to these impulses we recognize the deep connection between our personal environment and our innermost selves. It's as though by shifting the arrangement of our belongings we hope to rearrange the molecules of our emotional lives as well. Feng shui teaches us that our spaces both reflect and affect our physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. When our homes become cluttered and disordered, other aspects of our lives tend to feel gridlocked as well. It's a chicken-and-egg kind of situation. Not only does a cluttered home reflect a distracted and cluttered mind, it also makes it hard to focus and think clearly. It gets easier and easier to stop making the item-by-item decisions that could put you back in control of the mess and help you to feel more in control of your li...

Baby Sign Language
2007-03-11 20:32:00
By Kay Green Baby Sign , the teaching of sign language to hearing babies. Why? When? How?I have always had an interest in sign language since knowing my deaf aunt and uncle as a little girl. I myself know a little sign for worship at church. I read about the new idea of teaching sign to hearing babies and immediately knew I would like to do that with Haley. My adopted daughter will be 1 year old on Tuesday.I admit I did not teach sign to me 3 teenagers when they were babies. However with baby number 4 in my home with me at age 40, there are a lot of things I do differently this time around.Sign language for babies uses a different part of the brain than speech. Studies have shown that these babies who learn sign are less frustrated because they can express their wants and needs. It also says that these babies are actually ahead, not delayed, in speech development. Babies are able to do many signs before they can speak the words. Our babies all do some signs without us even thinking ab...

Ingredient Substitution
2007-03-09 17:19:00
Out of cake flour? Low on buttermilk? Here's where you can find help on substituting ingredients for ones you don't have on hand.Alcohol/LiqueurWhen making substitutions for alcohols, it is important to keep the volume of liquid in the recipe the same as originally called for. Depending on the recipe, apple juice or chicken broth often makes a good substitution for wine. When using flavored liqueurs, extracts can be substituted if you make up the balance of the liquid with water. For example, if a recipe calls for 2 tablespoons Grand Marnier you could use 1/2 teaspoon orange extract. Just be sure to get the same level of orange flavor. This may take some experimentation.Allspice, Ground1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon plus 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves plus 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg can be substituted for 1 teaspoon ground allspice.Baking Powder1/4 teaspoon baking soda plus 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar can be substituted for 1 teaspoon baking powder.Baking SodaThere is no recommended su...
