I haven’t posted about spiritual matters for a while, so here is an update on the last year. Last March, the pastor of the local Nazarene church resigned after 16 years. It was a very small congregation and every attempt to grow was somehow stifled. I spent 3 years as the youth pastor and had ...

Back in the 70’s, we went from the amazing feats of the Apollo Astronauts to the lull of Skylab, then the build up to the Shuttle Program. As I was in the 4th & 5th grade during the build-up, I believed (and a small part of me still hopes) that someday we would be buying ...

I’ve got it! Since Sen. John McCain clinched the nomination on Tuesday, the talk has immediately turned to who his running mate will be. The person that McCain picks has to be… Young (at least younger than him) Able to govern (chances are, Johnny Mac ain’t gonna make it a full term) From an electorally sound state Likeable (cause Johnny Mac ...

Weight Warriors - Week 2
2008-02-19 04:20:00
Mikki has me on 4 different workout routines, 3 or them are what I would call traditional, the 4th is based on resistance bands. I was telling her this afternoon that I’m not a fan of the ‘rubber bands’ because I felt like I had ‘failed’ at every exercise. Plus, I am your average 6′2″ 300+ lbs uncoordinated oaf and the rubber bands don’t account for that. She agreed, but encouraged me to keep trying. That is the last thing I want to do, give up. I have come far, just about half-way to my ultimate goal. So I appreciate her encouragement. Today, with the beginning of Week 2, I was back on Workout #1. There was a whole lot about the workout that is challenging, but according to Mikki, I showed gains in strength in all areas of the routine. It’s Monday, that’s weigh-in day for me… Week 0 - 317.2 lbs. Week 1 - 312.9 lbs. Week 2 - 311.7 lbs. Total Loss - 5.5 lbs.   Pain is weakness leaving the body. –Mikki M...

Who & What* traded for Prospects
2008-02-18 17:20:00
* Classic Abbott & Costello routine Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick was shocked to learn that he’d been traded to the Yomiuri Giants in Japan for a player named “Kobayashi.” “I don’t know what to think right now,” he told reporters outside his locker shortly after getting the news from assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. Had he truly been thinking, he would have realized that such deals are prohibited by his contract. And with a little digging he could have found out that there is no Kobayashi playing in Japan, because he’s usually choking down hot dogs on the 4th of July. The “trade” was, in fact, a prank, orchestrated by pitcher Brett Myers and was elaborate enough to include Amaro, manager Charlie Manuel, Kendrick’s agent, and even the media!
Reality Check: Michigan & Florida
2008-02-18 04:10:00
Over the last several years many state legislatures attempted to move up their Presidential Primary dates in an attempt to be a ‘player’ in the process. For the most part, every state that moved their primaries was bullied into changing them back by the Republican and Democratic Parties, who threatened the states with the loss of their convention delegates. You would get to have an early primary, but they wouldn’t be worth jack as far as delegates go. For the most part, the bullying worked, it worked in Oregon, our primary was moved back to it’s Last in the Nation slot, May 20th. But, for a few glorious weeks, we had a Super Tuesday Primary. The 90 men & women that meet in Salem for legislative sessions proved in this case (just like countless others) that they have the spinal veracity of a banana slug. But not the good folks in Michigan & Florida . These two battleground states played chicken with the parties and lost, at least with the Democrats. But...

Don’t Hassle the Hoff!
2008-02-16 18:50:00
In my memories, the great TV shows of the 80’s are flawless. The A-Team, Magnum P.I., Airwolf and The Knight Rider all hold great memories of the underdog, overcoming weakness to save the day. In the A-Team, only Hannibal (George Peppard) seemed to have all his oars in the water, “I love it when a plan comes together”. These guys were Vietnam Vets, charged with a crime they did not commit setting off to help the innocent, while staying just ahead of the Military Police, while driving the same cool van in every episode. Vets = Heroes. Thomas Magnum (Tom Selleck) was just plain smooth! He drove an awesome car, lived rent free on a Hawaiian estate, he had buddies (Rick & TC) that would come and get him out of any jam because they had served together in Vietnam (Vets = Heroes). Life was good for Magnum, other than the bad guys who would beat the crap out of him but still respect the car, there was Higgins. Higgins ran Robin Masters’ estate (neat little reveal...

WeightWatchers Week 56
2008-02-13 05:26:00
I think that I would be very happy to have this kind of weigh-in every week of the 12-week Weight Warriors Challenge. Looking at my previous numbers, I have to go back to last August to find the last time I had a 5 pound week. This week was filled with a lot of hard work, but seeing the first significantly lower number on the scale in some time, made the pain worth it! Anton… May I have a drum roll please… Starting Weight (Dec. 22, 2006): 392 lbs. Starting BMI: 51.7 Weight Today (Feb. 12, 2008): 311.8 lbs. Current BMI: 41.1 Weight Change This Week : -4.8 lbs. Total Weight Lost: -80.2 lbs. NEXT GOAL: Halfway to GOAL! (0.8 lbs. to go)   Do… or Do Not… there is no TRY. –Master Yoda
I know how the USPS can save money!
2008-02-13 02:21:00
But, of course, they won’t ask ME! In reading the article in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, they don’t even give a reason for the increase. But we all know that they are crying poverty because we are all using these silly boxes to pay our bills and communicate with friends and loved ones. From the P-I… In the past raising postage rates was a long, complex process involving hearings before the independent Postal Regulatory Commission, a process that could take nearly a year. However, under the new law regulating the post office that took effect in late 2006, the agency is allowed to increase rates with 45-days notice as long as changes are within the rate of inflation for the previous 12 months. The Postal Regulatory Commission calculated that rate at 2.9 percent through January, limiting the first-class rate to an increase of just over a penny. I am glad to hear that the Post Office doesn’t have to mess with pesky public hearings before raising stamp rates...
