Holiday Blech
2007-12-30 23:23:00 OK, I’m just about officially ready for the holidays to be over. Check it, ‘cos this is where I’m at: the gifts are opened — the items that need to be exchanged have been exchanged, that which needs to be returned has been returned, that which we love has been put in its place, and the lame crap we got at the obligatory office holiday functions is decorating the dining table and the kitchen countertop because we haven’t quite figured out how long we have to keep it visible before it can safely vanish. I am all in favor of holiday potlucks at the office because the gift of food is welcome when you work in an environment where management is cheap has no petty cash to spend on munchies. Not that my waist line needs more munchies. Our garbage collection happens on Tuesdays (and Fridays, but never mind that one), so there is an inordinate amount of trash in the house. Seriously, you open the pantry door and it’s boxes, as far as the eye can see. So... More About: Holiday , Blech

My turn for holiday angst

A wish for peace that works
2007-12-12 18:46:00 Well, it’s December. It’s that time of year when we all get together and make nice-nice and celebrate the [symbolic] birth of our Lord and Savior (if you’re Christian), the prophet ‘Issa bin Maryam (if you’re Muslim), that dude everyone uses to justify being nasty to people (if you’re just about anyone else) and wish people peace and love by shooting them in malls in Nebraska, blowing up car bombs in Algiers and Beirut, and talking about maybe eventually thinking about the possibility of beginning negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians. And it seems that His Imperial Eminence the Pope has announced that gay marriage is an obstacle to world peace. According to the Vatican, and I quote: “Presenting the nuclear family as the ‘first and indispensable teacher of peace’ and the ‘primary agency of peace,’ the 15-page document links sexual and medical ethics to international relations. ‘Everything that serves ...
