Never Nuthin’ On
2008-01-23 01:17:00
I know that there are weightier things going on in the world that I should address in today’s post. My friend Michael lost one of his best friends over the weekend. Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon. The economy is in a shambles, and Da Prez continues to insist that everything is just fine. Well, here’s the thing. I’ve given Michael my condolences already in private. I didn’t actually know Heath personally (I mean, it’s a shame he’s dead, but there’s little I can say beyond “Wow. I’m so surprised. I can’t believe he’s dead. What a shame.”). And one of the very few advantages to working in the public sector is that I have absolutely no money to put in the stock market, and my job is fairly recession-proof. So, I’m going to talk about something of absolutely no consequence: the alternate reality portrayed upon The Travel Channel. I’ve mentioned a few times over the past few months th...

I Need a Moment of Self-Pity
2008-01-18 23:42:00
So, I just got home from the doctor’s office. I had an appointment scheduled for last thing on a Friday afternoon because I have a skin tag right under my eyelid, and they have to freeze it off–a process that will, apparently, cause me to have a black eye. It was also time ... Meditations on 10 Years
2008-01-18 01:41:00
A student came to see me today in my office. This isn’t a particularly rare occurrence, as my office looks out onto a reading area where various students congregate. It’s been a while since I’ve had a student come to me to ask for feedback on a particular professor, though. One of ... Huckabee Steals a Line from Santorum
2008-01-17 20:30:00
In a newly published interview with belief.net, Mike Huckabee compares gay marriage to polygamy and bestiality. (Polygamy I kind of get; but bestiality? Really? How’s the goat supposed to say “I do?”) This isn’t even original–Rick Santorum already went down this road, and look where it got him. (Unelected.) On some ... Today?s Sign of the Apocalypse
2008-01-16 03:27:00
I’m always curious to see how stupid technology makes us as a society. I don’t necessarily mean stupid in the sense of “uneducated” but rather in the “unable to fend for ourselves” category. I’m sure, for example, that nearly everyone reading this will suffer, for example, from the same affliction that I do: ... All I Need to Know About the State of the World I Learned from Angelina Jol
2008-01-14 17:15:00
It’s the first day of classes, and the spring semester is gearing up. Apropos of this, I got a catalog for teaching materials this morning — I’m on several mailing lists for such things — and while flipping through it over a cup of coffee, I came across this fun tidbit. I’ve known about Chad Darnell’s 12 of 12 project for a while now, but I keep forgetting to pay attention to when the 12th of the month occurs. Usually, I’ll suddenly realize what day it is around noon, at which point half of the day is gone. The basic idea is that you shoot 12 ... Vocabulary Lesson for the Season: ?Istablaha?
2008-01-11 18:29:00
?????? (Istablaha) (verb; form X)– to take on the appearance of something that is blah; to become blah. One of the things I enjoy about Arabic is that its rigid grammatical structure allows you to create words that don’t exist, but that are perfectly intelligible. Anatomy of a Restless Night
2008-01-08 17:13:00
Ever since I moved to Texas ten years ago, I have joked routinely about “what day winter will be this year,” and this year, so far, has been no exception. Our “cold” day consisted of a low in the middle of the night that dipped a few degrees below freezing, but after the spectacular ...
