The Secret Life of Cell Phones
2008-02-09 16:58:00 Stop dumping your electronic waste (e-waste). Send it to recycling. Why??Consider this: during the extraction phase, raw materials must be extracted from the earth and refined before they go to the factories where products are made. The manufacturing phase uses energy and creates pollution. Transportation between each phase generates more negative impacts on the environment from the burning of fossil fuels. During the product?s use phase, it might require energy, use more natural resources and create more pollution. When the product reaches the end of its useful life, a choice is made either to recycle it and put it back into use (creating a circular pattern of use) or toss it in the trash (a linear pattern of use). Choices are made all along this chain, and understanding what those choices are is critical if we are to protect our environment and our health."You can find more info here More About: Life , Cell Phones , Cell Phone , Phones , Cell

The Revolution Door
2008-02-09 16:39:00 The designers at New York City based Fluxxlab studio have come up with an ingenious sustainable energy harvesting idea that makes you wonder why no one else has thought of it before. Their Revolution Door manages to capture otherwise wasted human energy from the revolving doors we all see at various large buildings. If you think about it, this concept is quite similar to a turbine spinning somewhere deep inside a hydroelectric dam or within wind turbine to generate renewable electricity. The Revolution Door is a modified revolving door comprised of three parts - a redesigned central core replacing that of any existing or new revolving door, a mechanical/electrical system that harnesses human energy and redistributes electricity to an output, and an output device that maps the harnessed energy. By mechanically harvesting a negligible amount of human energy and converting it to a tangible display through the use of a generator, the Revolution Door will directly communicate a single per...

Vodafone offers Facebook to UK users
2008-02-08 01:05:00 Facebook took a new step into the mobile realm on Thursday, launching a platform for operators designed to make its social networking application work better on portable devices.Vodafone is the first operator to use the Facebook for Mobile Operators platform and has started services in the UK and Germany, said Jed Stremel, Facebook's director of mobile division. Vodafone will soon expand the program to Greece, Italy, Spain, Ireland and Portugal. The platform involves giving operators a set of technical specifications intended to resolve some of frustrating hang-ups when using Facebook on a mobile phone rather than a PC, such as smoothing out login problems and opening up other features, Stremel said. The move by Facebook, which ranks next to MySpace as one of the most popular social networking sites, is intended to grow its user base, which the company estimates at 64 million users. So far, the company says it has six million users of Facebook Mobile, an unsupported mobile version of... More About: Offers , Facebook , Users
How Israel became so High-Tech?
2008-02-08 00:55:00 Israel became a high-tech hothouse because she had to. True, she enjoys favorable conditions for the growth of high-tech industries; chief among them, well-educated, inventive, enterprising people. Relative to the size of her population, Israel has more engineers, and sees more scientific articles published, than any other country in the world (Israel has 135 engineers per 10,000 people; the US has 85). However, the stimulus for the industry's growth has been national survival, both military and economic. David vs GoliathsAs a small country in a hostile neighborhood, Israel must strive to maintain a qualitative military edge over her potential enemies. Experience in a series of wars has taught Israel that she needs to develop that edge independently as far as she can. In large part, Israel?s high-tech industries are a spin-off from that process. Israel fought the 1967 Six Day War largely with French weaponry. When President de Gaulle imposed an arms embargo after that war, Israel ... More About: Israel , High Tech , Tech , High , High-Tech

Apple Takes Third of Global Mobile Market
2008-02-08 00:25:00 In less than half a year, Apple , Inc. has become the world's number-three seller of smart mobile devices, as Apple's iPhone took off. But Apple's exclusive carrier arrangements for the iPhone show signs of strain with users unlocking Apple's iPhone. Analysts say Apple needs to work on its smartphone to catch up to the Blackberry and Nokia.Apple bested Motorola to grab third place in global fourth-quarter sales of smart mobile devices, according to market researcher Canalys. With 2.3 million iPhones sold in the quarter, Apple has a 6.5 percent global market share of smart devices, still substantially behind BlackBerry maker Research in Motion, with 4 million units sold and a 11.5 percent market share, and global leader Nokia with 18.8 million unit sales and a 53 percent market share. In the U.S., the iPhone accounted for 28 percent of the market, advancing on RIM with 41 percent and blowing past Palm with only 9 percent."When you consider that it launched part way through the year... Apple Patches iPhone Security Vulnerability
2008-02-08 00:20:00 Following news that Apple 's latest firmware update for the iPhone breaks the "jailbreak" software that many users had installed to run third-party applications or use a carrier other than AT&T, nCircle's Andrew Storms said that, with the iPhone SDK on its way, it's best to take advantage of the security patch and sit tight for a few months.Apple has pushed out its 1.1.2 firmware update for the iPhone and iPod touch, which fixes a bug in rendering TIFF images. The bug has been used by several groups to create software hacks for unlocking the phone and for "jailbreaking" the phone to run third-party applications. It also made the iPhone extremely vulnerable to malicious exploits.Previous versions of Apple's firmware used a version of the libtiff library that was susceptible to buffer overflow attacks. "By enticing a user to view a maliciously crafted TIFF image, an attacker may cause an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution," Apple's update page expla... Intel's Silverthorne Chip Could Power Apple's Future
2008-02-08 00:15:00 Intel's new Silverthorne chip is ideal for ultra-portable laptops like Apple , Inc.'s Mac Book Air, but Intel may be laying the foundation for future Apple processors. Intel gave a hint of Apple's future in one of 14 papers it will present at the International Solid-State Circuit Conference in San Francisco.Just because a paper is technical doesn't mean marketing wasn't involved. A good example is Intel's presentation Monday at the International Solid-State Circuit Conference in San Francisco on its upcoming Silverthorne mobile processor. The title: "A Sub-1W to 2W Low-Power IA Processor for Mobile Internet Devices in 45nm High-ÊMetal-Gate CMOS."Sounds geeky, but consider the phrase "mobile Internet devices." That appears to align with Apple's vision of the iPhone and iPod Touch as "the first mainstream Wi-Fi mobile platform, running all kinds of mobile applications."But while Silverthorne draws 10 to 15 times less power than Intel's Centrino laptop processor and is "easily th... Microsoft-Yahoo fussion may let Google grab mobile ads
2008-02-08 00:06:00 Among the benefits Microsoft could get from acquiring Yahoo for $44.6 billion is a chance to compete in the emerging mobile advertising market. But while Microsoft struggles to take over Yahoo, both Microsoft and Yahoo could be distracted while Google becomes dominant in still another market. While Microsoft Relevant Products/Services's $44.6 billion bid for Yahoo appears to be aimed at capturing a share of the rapidly growing online advertising market dominated by Google, some observers think the move would also position Microsoft in the emerging market for mobile advertising.Robert Scoble, vice president of media development for PodTech.net and a former Microsoft blogger, wrote on his Scobelizer blog that the leveraged buyout will actually benefit Google by distracting both Microsoft and Yahoo from the mobile front."The real race today" Scoble wrote, "is for ownership of your mobile phone." He noted that six million cell-phone users are added every month in China. "So every month ... More About: Mobile , Yahoo!
Apple Cuts iPhone, iPod Touch Production
2008-02-07 23:57:00 Mac sales appear to be rising, but Craig Berger of FBR Research says Apple , Inc. has reduced orders for iPhone s and iPod s for the second time in two months. Apple's iPod Touch may have the weakest sales since it is less than an Apple iPhone. Another report finds that Apple iPhone calls are coming from countries without Apple contracts. Are Apple sales in trouble? Two research analysts have reported in recent days that Apple is aggressively cutting back production on iPods and iPhones, while increasing production on Mac computers.Craig Berger, an analyst with FBR Research, told clients in a research note this week that Apple has reduced orders for iPhones and iPods for the second time in two months. Berger concludes that Apple is experiencing weak sell-through in the fourth calendar quarter of 2007 or in the early going this year."For both iPods and iPhones, we believe Apple was previously targeting a roughly 50 percent quarter-over-quarter decline for first quarter units, whereas we... Zero G
2008-02-07 23:38:00 How It Works?Weightless Flight (also known as Parabolic Flight) is achieved aboard ZERO-G's Boeing 727 aircraft named G-FORCE ONE. Weightlessness is achieved by flying G-FORCE ONE through a parabolic flight maneuver. Specially trained pilots fly these maneuvers between approximately 24,000 and 34,000 feet altitude. Each parabola takes 10 miles of airspace to perform and lasts approximately one minute from start to finish. The maneuver is somewhat like a roller coaster in that the plane is initially pulled up to approximately 45 degrees 'nose high'. Next the plane is 'pushed over' the top to reach the zero-gravity segment of the parabolas. For the next 25 - 30 seconds everything in the plane is weightless. At approximately 30 degrees 'nose low' a gentle pull-out is started which allows the Flyers to ... More About: Zero G

Solar panels that work in the dark
2008-02-07 19:31:00 The biggest problem with the sun is that it's not always around. And during the winter months it behaves like an absentee landlord and shows up only for a few hours. Unfortunately, solar panels must contend with this erratic behavior if they are to save us from ourselves. If only there was a panel that worked in the dark...Well, guess what? It looks like we might now be on the brink of technology that effectively deals with sun's temperament. Thanks to the wonders of nanotechnology and, in no small part the efforts of Steven Novack of the Idaho National Laboratories, there are now foldable panels that operate at 80 percent efficiency. Conventional photovoltaics yield only about 40 percent. But as EcoGeek explains, "the surface of the material is printed with miniscule nano-antennae that capture infra-red radiation, the kind that the sun puts out in abundance, and is even available at night." Scientists are still working on converting the light into those hard working electro... More About: Solar , Work , Dark , The Dark , Solar Panels
iPhone is bad for health and environment
2008-02-07 19:22:00 According to a Yahoo News report, a group of scientists working with Greenpeace International have performed a study, which concluded the presence of harmful materials in Apple 's latest iPhone . Titled "Missed call: the iPhone's Hazardous Chemicals", the findings of the report suggest that the device contains "toxic brominated compounds (indicating the presence of brominated flame retardants -- so-called BFRs) and hazardous PVC plastics." The chemicals are said to have a negative effect on sexual and reproductive health in mammals and are therefore banned from toys and other commonly used products in Europe. "Two of the phthalate plasticisers found at high levels in the headphone cable are toxic to reproduction," said Dr. David Santillo, senior scientist at the Greenpeace Research Laboratories, adding that brominated compounds have also been found in half the samples, including the phone's antenna. While environmentally perilous, non-degradable PVC plastics and BFRs have been ... More About: Health , Environment , Pollution
Apple MacBook Air
2008-02-07 19:19:00 Yesterday's Mac world 2008 Keynote by Steve Jobs introduced the MacBook Air, Apple 's attempt to move into the greener computing sphere. Up to now, despite a pared-down aesthetic that would appear to lend itself well to an environmental approach, Apple hasn't appeared to be too concerned over green--they took some criticism from environmentalists for using toxic chemicals in the iPhone. But they're getting to it now, with the introduction of this superthin, 13-inch laptop. The $1,800 MacBook Air feature a recyclable, mercury-free aluminum frame; a mercury- and arsenic-free display; PVC-free cables; and it comes in recyclable, pared-down packaging. Coming in at just three pounds means, presumably, fewer materials used in manufacture. It's also ENERGY STAR-rated and earned a silver rating from EPEAT. And energy efficiency means longer battery life--a single charge will get you five hours of worktime. More info is available at the Apple website and at PC Magazine's review. Macbook Air ends the war between Apple and Greenpeace
2008-02-07 19:17:00 Only a few months ago the relationship between Greenpeace and Apple was a frosty one. The leading environmental watchdog even commissioned a study that slammed the faddish iPhone for its high count of harmful PVC and BFRs.But now the tune seems to be changing as Greenpeace washes away the bad blood with its positive reception of the eco-friendly Mac Book Air laptop. According to Endgadget, here is what Greenpeace had to say about Apple's new notebook. "The MacBook Air is a strong entry in the race to build a green PC. As a mercury and arsenic free laptop it exceeds European Standards (RoHS directive exemptions) and raises the bar for the rest of the industry." More About: Macbook
Nokia's Eco Line Gadgets
More articles from this author:2008-02-07 19:11:00 At the showfloor of the Greener Gadget s show in New York City today, Nokia showed off a prototype of what they call an "eco-sensor." The system consists of two devices: a phone and a watch-like sensor. Both devices are Nokia's experiment with next-gen materials and "eco lifestyle" features. Nokia reps said they are working with printed circuitry and renewable materials for the devices. The phone can be worn around your neck and charged via small solar panels. The watch device gives readouts on atmospheric conditions, weather, and solar radiation. The watch also gives biofeedback on the wearer's vital signs and other stats. Nokia also displayed an environmentally friendly cell phone called the 3110 Evolve. The phone is made from 50 percent post-consumer materials and is 80 percent recyclable. Also, the charger has a low-power feature that draws very little electricity when you leave it plugged in. For now, the phone will be available only in Europe, and will ship in Q1 of this year.
