Wireless data prices fall, usage booms
2008-04-22 21:16:00
Mobile data traffic ramped up between four- and eightfold in 2007 thanks to the knockout combination of dramatically decreasing prices and faster network downlink speeds, according to a report from Heavy Reading. The surge in data traffic is extremely good news for operators, but the challenge they now face is how to withstand the reductions in data prices without destroying their business models and becoming mere bit-pipe providers. In 2007, an eightfold increase in data traffic compared with 2006 levels was common for mobile operators that introduced competitive flat-rate data plans and weren't carrying much data traffic prior to the deployment of HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) technology, according to the report, "Flat IP Architectures in Mobile Networks: From 3G to LTE."For operators with a lot of pre-HSPA 3G data traffic and without competitive flat-rate data plans, three- and fourfold increases in data traffic in 2007 were common.Gabriel Brown, Heavy Reading senior analyst and...

Chrysler goes wireless
2008-04-22 17:52:00
Chrysler will offer Wi-Fi Internet connectivity as a dealer-installed option on all models in the fourth quarter of 2008 and a blind-spot monitor as a factory option on its 2009 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans.Chrysler said the Wi-Fi and 4G (fourth-generation wireless) technology will allow Internet and e-mail access along with the ability to download movies and music to a vehicle. Chrysler said it plans to make the technology a factory-installed option at some point. The radar-based blind-spot monitoring system for the minivans displays a visual warning in the sideview mirror when the vehicle is moving forward and another vehicle enters a blind spot. If a turn signal is activated, it sounds a warning. A "rear cross path" feature also offers alerts when the minivan's in reverse.Ford will offer a similar system on some 2009s that works with its radar-based blind spot monitoring that will show the blind spot in secondary convex sections of the sideview mir...

Asus launched 8.9 Inch Eee PC 900
2008-04-22 17:22:00
This new generation of the popular subnoteboook includes a 8.9 inch widescreen, a 1.3M pixels webcam, the new innovative FingerGlide and 12GB and 20GB storage capacities for Windows and Linux platforms respectively ? catering to wider consumer needs while still maintaining the "Easy to learn, work and play" concept by keeping the overall weight under 1kg.Mobility is one of the major factors attributed to the Eee PC?s success and this is in part due to the use of the built-in Solid State Disk (SSD) technology ? which offers a quiet, energy saving and shock proof design for stable computing on-the-go. Traditional hard disks spin at 5400 RPM (Revolutions per Minute) ? making them more prone to data loss or damage if shocks or bumps are received. Conversely, the Eee PC is able to protect against such incidents, and is the perfect tool for outdoor computing ? suitable as an ideal companion for reporters, wildlife photographers and other like-minded outdoor enthusiasts."Vital feedback fro...

Wireless Glossary
2008-04-22 12:24:00
1X or 1XRTT: A high speed data protocol that is used with CDMA phones and devices for wireless internet. 2G: The most common type of phone in North America today. 2G phones deliver both voice and data transmissions, but primarily focus on voice communications. Data connections using the wireless phone are similar to dial-up connections using a older modem and speeds are quite slow. Okay for simple text messages (SMS) and email, but not much else. 2.5G: An intermediate bridging standard between 2G and 3G phones. 2G phones are purely digital and can transmit wireless data at about the same rate as a dial-up connection with a fast modem. Good for email and simple web browsing. 3G: A third-generation high-speed mobile phone that will eventually provide data at rates similar to cable or ADSL. At present, very limited availability and data transfer speeds are limited to about 144 Kbps. 3G: 4G is the broadband mobile communications that will supersede 3G. Standards ...

New Wi-Fi APs from Aruba
2008-04-22 12:18:00
Aruba Networks announced a new line of 802.11a/b/g access points that can be upgraded over-the-network to enable 802.11n dual-radio operation. The new access points allow enterprises, schools, universities, hospitals, and other institutions to prepare today for a future migration to 802.11n without incurring the cost of an immediate upgrade. The new AP-124ABG and AP-125ABG Access Points can be used for wireless access, intrusion-detection monitoring, secure enterprise mesh or remote access point applications. The mode of operation is determined by network-downloadable software, which eliminates the expense of physically accessing the devices to re-purpose or update them. Full 802.11n performance is delivered using existing 802.3af Power-over-Ethernet (PoE), precluding the need for an expensive PoE upgrade."The exact timing of the migration to 802.11n varies by user based on their application requirements, the availability of 802.11n clients, and budget," said Michael King, Research D...

New WIPS from Aruba
2008-04-22 11:59:00
Aruba Networks, a global leader in user-centric networks and secure mobility solutions, today announced a new version of its RFprotect Wireless Intrusion Prevention System (WIPS) software that allows users to define their own attack-detection signatures and defend against previously unknown, undisclosed, or unpatched vulnerabilities (zero-day attacks). These user-defined signatures can be implemented almost immediately, enhancing security and giving users more control over their threat vulnerability. All other wireless intrusion prevention systems require the supplying vendor to provide updates, leaving customers vulnerable in the meantime when a new attack is developed. In addition, Aruba customers will be able to make their user-defined signatures available to others by contributing them to the Wireless Vulnerabilities and Exploits (WVE) database at www.wve.org, a community vulnerabilities database. Aruba has long been an active participant in the WVE Project."Security is an unendi...

Meru launched a new 802.11n AP
2008-04-22 11:45:00
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Apr. 21, 2008 ? Meru Networks has introduced the AP440, a four-radio IEEE 802.11n wireless access point that provides the data rates and functionality to let enterprises replace aging wired infrastructures with wireless networks without compromising access speed, throughput capacity, security or resiliency. The AP440 has four radios that can each support the full draft IEEE 802.11n standard, in either the 2.4GHz or the 5GHz band. Meru's "channel blanket" architecture means that all four can be in use at once, though likely set-ups will probably use one radio for monitoring, intrusion detection, and protection from rogue access points. Each of the AP440's four IEEE 802.11n radios supports access at up to 300 megabits per second (Mbps), for 1.2 gigabit-per-second (Gbps) capacity. Because the four radios work together to provide internal redundancy, load-balancing and security, enterprise users can dramatically reduce the number of access points and additional secu...

April 18, 2008 Cnet News: Speaking at a Westminster eForum on Web 2.0 this week in London, Jim Cicconi, vice president of legislative affairs for AT&T, warned that the current systems that constitute the Internet will not be able to cope with the increasing amounts of video and user-generated content being uploaded."The surge in online content is at the center of the most dramatic changes affecting the Internet today," he said. "In three years' time, 20 typical households will generate more traffic than the entire Internet today."Cicconi, who was speaking at the event as part of a wider series of meetings with U.K. government officials, said that at least $55 billion worth of investment was needed in new infrastructure in the next three years in the U.S. alone, with the figure rising to $130 billion to improve the network worldwide. "We are going to be butting up against the physical capacity of the Internet by 2010," he said.He claimed that the "unprecedented new wave of broad...

According to wikipedia: "Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results for targeted keywords. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results or the higher it "ranks", the more searchers will visit that site. Future Internet Collapse?
2008-04-17 21:53:00
Demand for online video websites such as YouTube and Metacafe are putting the internet under so much strain it may collapse within two years, experts have revealed. They claim that unless billions of pounds is spent on upgrading the copper wires, which underpin parts of the web's infrastructure, an internet meltdown is highly likely.Larry Irving, co-chairman of the Internet Innovation Alliance, an American industry group lobbying for universal improvements in the web's network, told The Telegraph: "Our streets in cities like London or New York were designed for a certain amount of traffic. There are times of the day when you can get around and times when there is congestion. London does not shut down, it carries on, but everything slows down. The internet is something like that.?Irving said that the copper wires were only intended to carry voice calls. The surge in transfers of video-related data means the wires are at risk of becoming overloaded, especially since internet traffic...

Cisco is urging its partners to partner
2008-04-14 23:27:00
At the Cisco Partner Summit in Honolulu, the company announced the launch of the Cisco Partner Exchange, a virtual networking program that will enable resellers to find each other by technical expertise or by offering, among other factors, to collaborate on customer projects. While collaboration in the channel is growing, and many partners say it is a necessary development, others remain wary."Competitive overlap discourages partners from cooperating," said Robert Keblusek, senior vice president of business development at Cisco partner Sentinel Technologies Inc. in Downers Grove, Ill. "What they're promoting is good, but it's whether they can change some of that attitude over the next couple of years. Just because Cisco says 'go partner' doesn't mean all of a sudden they'll let their guard down."At the summit, Cisco channel chief Keith Goodwin plugged channel collaboration as a way to drive sales and contribute to the 12% to 17% growth CEO John Chambers has called for. Cisco certifications reached 1 million

Cisco certifications recently reached 1 million but long-time rumors of the program starting an official job matching service may be actualized this summer. In an interview conducted by news writer Michael Morisy, Fred Weiller, director of switching product and solutions marketing at Cisco intimated that ?they were working on an official Cisco career marketplace to match certified professionals with jobs.?With all the talk of having to survive a recession in the IT industry (whether or not we?re actually in one is entirely debatable), extra job-support programs may be the perfect answer. If you look at some of Cisco?s existing sites, however, it seems they?ve already provided quite the gamut of career-excelling resources: Take, for example, Cisco?s career resources page or their Career Connection center which ?seeks to link Networking Academy students and graduates with employers who are looking for job-ready IT and Networking candidates.?
