School Gardens - As Much About Education As Gardening
2008-03-09 06:54:00
There are no doubt a number of good and perhaps obvious reasons for creating and developing gardens in school grounds, such as the need for shade trees in the playground, shrubs and bushes to screen the street outside, and a nice clean lawn as opposed to mud and dirt. Irrespective of these however, the garden, or the processes connected with it, should be seen as having educational potential, in the fullest and deepest meaning of the word.Growing fruit vegetables and herbsThe best reason for raising plants for food is not to shave a bit off the school budget, but to show children that food does not originate in plastic wrappers and supermarket shelves, but is grown according to specific processes. By being involved at some stage of that process, whether by way of planting, composting, pruning or harvesting, the child's mindset alters from that of a consumer, concerned only with the end product, to that of producer, concerned with, and aware of the means by which the food is produce...

Garden Design Ideas For Awkward Shaped Gardens
2008-03-08 06:25:00
The temptation with an awkwardly shaped garden is either to do as little as possible to it -- maybe a lawn surrounded with flowerbeds -- or to add too many hidden corners and details, which might work well in an enormous plot, but won't make the best of an average-sized garden. The ideal is to come up with a layout that's simple but uses design tricks to correct the shape of the garden. Better still, a clever layout can make the awkward shape an advantage, using odd corners for hidden storage or raised levels to define areas of the garden. We asked Katrina Wells of Earth Design s to come up with three solutions for three classic problems: a sloping site, an L-shaped garden and a tapering plot. Our advice is to simplify the look of the garden, where possible, by using similar shades to unify the different elements such as decking, paving and walls. As for budget, we've suggested where you can make savings. Now all you have to do is pick the plan that's best for you.Designs For A Sl...

2008-03-06 06:42:00
Multi-Seasonal Gardening in One SeasonGrowing a garden can, at times, be almost an art form. This is because it is not always as simple as planting something and letting it grow. Even though it would work to do that, many people understand that careful planning and consistent effort are required in order to grow a garden that will produce consistently throughout the growing season. In early spring I woul...

Container Gardening Basics for Success
2008-02-29 15:48:00
Container Gardening is becoming more and more popular as the population of cities and suburbs increases. Your "garden" is moveable and so it is easier to manage pests and garden environments. It also reduces the time that you need to tend to your plants because you can place them where they are easier for you to reach. This is especially good for people who are handicapped but still want a garden. There are some things that are necessary in order to have a successful container garden.First, you must have a container. You can find them in almost every size, shape and they can be made of many different materials. And, they can be very inexpensive, especially when you create them from "found" objects. You must make sure that the container that you choose has adequate drainage.Make sure that your container is appropriate for your plant's full-grown size. You don't want to have to keep changing pots as your garden grows.Soil is the next thing you have to have for your garden. I'm sorry...

Light Requirements For The Home Garden
2008-02-27 18:16:00
Leaves must have Light Leaves are the plants' food factories, and light is the power that helps them manufacture food from elements of air and soil. Most plants need many hours of sunshine daily in order to grow satisfactorily. Roses, for instance, need at least six hours. Some plants, however, get along with little light, so they can grow in shade or semishade.A good general rule to remember is that ordinarily the more sun a plant gets, the better it will flower.Morning sunlight is kind light, bright but relatively cool; thus the east side of your house is a favored position for plants.Afternoon sunshine is hot and harsh, so a western exposure is less versatile.Sun touching and warming the soil is desirable in early spring, to start plants into growth. And it's good all year in cool climates. But in hot-summer areas, it can dry the earth and overheat roots, so plants often require part-time shade, or being close enough together to shade the ground, or having a protective carpet of...

Successful Container Gardening Requires Adequate Drainage
2008-02-24 19:12:00
No matter what type of plant or container you use in your garden, adequate drainage is a must. Waterlogged soil is one of the major culprits of damaged and dying plants and it is essential for every container you use to have enough drainage holes to avoid potential problems. Even having too many drainage holes is far better than not having enough. If the container or pot you would like to use does not have a drainage hole in it already, drilling one using a handheld drill with a large bore drill bit is the easiest way to make one. Usually, drainage holes at least ˝ inch to 1 inch in diameter are best. Make one drainage hole per square foot of container space, but if you're not sure how many square feet your pot or container is, err on the side of caution and drill several holes, evenly spaced around the bottom of the container. If you are drilling in a clay or terra cotta pot, place masking tape in an X-shaped design where you plan to drill in order to prevent cracking or shattering....

Lawn Care and Fertilizers
2008-02-21 18:09:00
Have you ever looked at a lawn, of a neighbor, in envy, does it look greener than yours, does it remain green for longer especially during periods of hot dry weather or do you just get the feeling that he is better at lawn care than yourself? To be blunt and truthful you have to accept that clearly you have no option but to learn a little about lawn care and the best way to create the perfect lawn is the correct application of suitable fertilizers.Understanding the Need for FertilizersIt is often surprising to discover how few people understand why you should apply fertilizers to a lawn. Even if they religiously feed the other plants in the garden the lawn is often overlooked. Many folk understand the need to water their lawn but they often, incorrectly, assume that this is all that is required. It is important to remember that your grass is a living plant and, just like all other things living, it requires sustenance to grow. For it to grow well your grass needs the correct blend o...

Container Vegetable Gardening
2008-02-19 19:28:00
Container vegetable gardening is becoming more prevalent in these days of smaller yards and more hazards with our food supply. More people want to grow some of their own vegetables in an attempt to avoid buying non-organic product or having to pay the high prices of organic produce. With the recent prevalence of outbreaks of salmonella, e. coli and other from products such as green onions and spinach, we are left concerned about whether any of the produce we buy is really safe. The problem is, the produce we eat is mass produced and mass processed. This means a lot of hands are touching each and every item we end up eating. When you grow your own vegetables, you know whose hands are touching your food!Of course, most of us don't have the space for large gardens. Many of us have very small yards. Apartment and condo dwellers may have no space at all! That is where container vegetable gardening is very handy. Growing vegetables in containers means you can grow your vegetables on a de...

Planting Rye Grass For Easy Green Winter Lawns
2008-02-16 06:08:00
For many locations, the end of autumn and the approach of winter is time to start thinking about planting rye grass. However, rye grass is easy to plant and grow. Seed the soil and water it. That's about all there is to growing rye grass. It can be hand sown, applied using spreaders, or by broadcasting the seed, all with little trouble.
