A promise fulfilled, finally

Phil with his blog. He is from Australia . An Aussie. Not to be confused with an Ossie. They are the Germans from former Eastern Germany or the German Democratic Republic. So, Phil is from Down Under. I wonder why it is called like this. Because, isn?t it that the world is turning? Could it not be that from time to time in the 24 hour, 4 season cycle they might be Up Over?Anyway, with Lozster, Phil is now the second Australian in my favorites. Perhaps this is a label enough to be in the favorites. But I put him in there for several reasons. First, he is a friend of my friend Pumuckl. Second, at the occasion of our National Holiday he promoted my blog. Third, his blog is amazing. He writes about all sorts of different things. With a lot of good humor and very interesting subjects. On August 5, I told him that he will be included in my ?hit parade?. And I just did not get around to do it. So I want to do this before the month is over. And now it is done.I am convinced that you will like ...

Between jumping out of bed and taking a shower
2007-08-30 05:45:00
It is 6.45 am. I woke up late.As usual, I get my grey cells to wake up too. By spending a half an hour checking what has been going on in the blogging world. A few weeks ago I was invited to submit an interview at www.bloginterviewer.com. I did and got a few days ago the message that it was published. It is another and nice way to make your blog known.I did wander around on this site and discovered something: I am in very good company. Anji, Jennifer and Pumuckl are on it also. I am certain that soon we all will be on it?Now I go and take my shower.

Sooo busy!
2007-08-29 21:49:00
I am still far behind with everything. But yesterday I visited all your blogs, every single one, and left many comments. I am proud of this.I was supposed to make a ?25th of the Month? about ?Celebrating Life ? Daily?. And I am four days late. But I will make it very soon.I was also promising Phil from Australia last week to present him to you and include him in the favorites. I still have to do this also. But slowly I am emerging from my ?blog drowning?. Thanks to our new ?life vest?: We pass now here with DSL with an extreme bandwidth. The download time for the pages has drastically improved. Now I simply have to find a way to post quicker. Find time. Subjects to talk about are plenty.Coming back I also have to catch up with what has been going on here. Colleagues have left for good, new ones have to be briefed. They need to be in the ?game? quickly. And in the next view days UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon will come to visit Darfur. You might see me on CNN. You might only. Because...

Almost like a follow up on my previous post. I am back in my bush. I did bring a few small things to my colleagues. Some sweets which we don?t find here. A language course for also for one who wants to learn French. A bottle of Swiss Vodka (yes, this exists) for another one.Henri Nestlé came to Switzerland in the 19th century and founded the company which is today a food empire: Nestlé. They manufacture many food things in many factories all over the world. If you feed your baby with baby food it most probably comes from Nestlé. And I don?t know if people drink more instant coffee for Maxwell or rather Nescafe. But Nestlé started out mainly with chocolates, a long time ago. They had four brands: Nestlé, Peter, Kohler and Cailler. I have not seen the Peter and Kohler brands in the last few years, but Nestlé and Cailler are still going strong. They make for instance excellent dark chocolate where they put different percentages of cocoa form different countries. For purists these black ...

Why should I run after women?
2007-08-24 06:47:00
Really, why should I? I will tell you.But before I continue I would like to say something. What you will read in this post has no chronological order. Also, I will not mention any names or places to respect people?s privacy. And I will use the terms women, ladies and females. Or should I? Because, sometimes, to me ?women? and ?females? have some devaluating meaning or sense. But believe me, I don?t feel this way.I love women. But I am not a chaser or a womanizer. I simply enjoy their company, be it private or professional. When I was younger I had many relationships with women of my age. Friends, good friends, nothing else. When they had worries, the came to see me. I gave them advise on how to handle a relationship. I let them cry against my shoulder when their boyfriends left them or their husbands run away. And I did help them with their study work and they succeeded. Of course, from time to time I fell in love with one of them. But kept quiet because I knew I have no chance or b...

Very quick and short, to show you that I am around!
2007-08-21 06:42:00
This week is more terrible then a working week. Yesterday and today sessions with the dentist (to get a Pepsodent smile), later departure to visit my mother 200 kilometres from here. Tomorrow preparation of a Value Added Tax inspection of "my" historic railway museum company after tomorrow. And Friday, maybe, a post before I return back to Sudan on Saturday.I guess I will have to take a week of vacation when I am back. To recover from my vacation in Switzerland.

Welcome Susanne49, or "Chum ine, d'Schtube isch chiesed"
2007-08-17 16:53:00
The second part of my post title is a typical Swiss (from Berne) expression. Literally translated it says: "Please come in, there is gravel in the living room". Of course, this sounds funny. Probably "chiesed" was also the slang for "clean". But it has a deep meaning. If you are told this, you are most welcome in ones home, fullheartedly.Susa nne left a few weeks ago a message on "mybloglog" and also commented some of my posts. I returned the "courtesy" by visiting her. She has three blogs. One is called "All about Switzerland". A beautiful blog (mostly in German) with beautiful photos. Normal, Susanne is a professional photographer. It would be nice to be in my "favorites". But then already Pumuckl, Hafez and, of course I, post items (from time to time) on Switzerland. This should though not prevent you from visiting her blog and have another insight of our country. The second blog is called "Weddings on the beach" where Susanne publishes her professional photos of weddings. Again, i...

Thursday Thirteen, Nr.12, about Flops
2007-08-15 08:25:00
Thirteen Things from Me1. My first marriage was a flop. But I am also responsible for it. 2. Me going to school was a flop. I hated it. That is why I have no college degree. But last year I got a professional certification. After all these years. 3. My first relationship (at least I tried to have it) with a young lady was a flop. She loved someone else. 4. My first experience with a floppy disk was a flop. I worked for hours to figure it out, made hours long backups and found nothing on the ?numerous? disks. 5. Joining my agency 9 years ago was not a flop. It has given me the most outstanding professional experience and personal satisfaction. 6. I prefer not to talk about my first sexual experience. A total flop. 7. My relation with the Swiss Income Tax people is not a flop. They even show me how to save money on income tax. 8. My intended career of being a bush pilot flopped. Because of my first marriage. 9. Getting my drivers license was almost a flop. I had to make 3 attempts. 10...

It takes time to catch up!
2007-08-13 06:36:00
Coming back after 7 weeks means a lot. Of nice things, of a lot of things to do.See my family is great. You get an update on what is going on. Of course, I had an idea before because of my almost daily phone calls. But then, at the cost of 7 dollars per minute, you limit the blabla and don't have much details. I got the details now and it was like a huge flowing river. And in the evening, talking with my wife, I get to know the more delicate stories. And her worries because the daughter has finished her university but has some strained relation with her boyfriend. And the son is still unhappy with his airline and desperately wants to join another one.And I have other family to take "care off". My mother. I have to go and visit her. Though Switzerland being a small country, she lives quite far from me. Which is naturally no excuse of not going to her place. My brother. At least he lives not far from my mother and so I can do it at the same time. And then my friends. Particularely the...

Here I am again.
2007-08-11 06:02:00
I made it back. To a very "wet" Switzerland. Heavy rains, inundations, a lot of damages, people having lost their properties, in a village close to Montreux. And the main or "master" railway line crossing Switzerland cut, for at least a week.Right now, I am busy checking my mail (the postal one) and see what is in there. And of course, and the most important, I am spending time with my wife. After seven weeks, there is a lot to talk about. And then of course, and also very important, I will resume the "real" posting. Perhaps in a day or so. Thanks a lot for your patience.

But before a ?follow up? or an addition to my ?Happy Birthday, Switzerland? post. My country has probably the most ?real? democratic system one can imagine. Because the Government is just the executive body and the ?power? is really in the hands of the population (through parliament) and with continued solicitation of the people with votes, several times a year. We do not only elect our representatives but take part in the law making process. The system is quite complex and I will (in a future post) try to give you an insight. Our constitution gives us many rights and an important one is freedom of speech. And we really do have it. I can put a full page add (of course paying for it) on the front page of a newspaper with the statement: ?Half of our government members are useless?. This means that the other half is NOT useless. People will read it and feel that I am right. But some will not agree with me.The worst case scenario could be that I am approached by whomever and they will te...

Thursday Thirteen, Nr. 11, about the Sahel
2007-08-03 05:02:00
Thirteen Things from Me 1. The Sahel starts in Mauritania and crosses all the way through Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Northern Nigeria, Northern Cameroon and Chad to Sudan. 2. It is the joint between the tropical Africa and the Sahara. 3. The population density is very low. You can travel for days, crossing dunes and plateaus without seeing anybody. And then, out of nowhere you meet a nomad. You don?t know where he comes from and where he goes to. He knows. 4. A Thuraya Satellite phone is very useful. You can call any place from anywhere. And if you are lost it gives you the coordinates of your position. And you can be saved. Most probably by a Russian MI-8 helicopter. 5. With one date you can survive 3 days in the Sahel. The first day you eat the skin. The second you eat the fruit. And the third you suck the stone. 6. Tuareg are one of the most famous nomad tribe in the Sahel. They live in Mali, Niger and Algeria. 7. The Tuareg language is Tamashek when they speak and Tifin...

Happy Birthday, Switzerland
2007-08-01 04:41:00
Today, 1st of August, is our 4th of July. 716 years ago Switzerland became independent. Well, a small portion of it. 3 cantons. Cantons are our states. We are a confederation of states. Today, 26 of them. Switzerland is not a republic, it is the Swiss Confederation. But some of the cantons are republics. Like the Republic of Geneva. Or states, Staat in German, like ?Der Staat Zürich?. We are around 7.5 million people, 41 percent are Roman Catholic, 40 percent Protestants and the rest something else. A few centuries ago we fought among ourselves because of religion. The motto of Switzerland (also called Helvetia) was (at its foundation) ?Wir wollen sein ein einigVolk von Brüdern? (We want to be a united nation of brothers) or something similar to this. Are we really?Well, if a guy from Geneva makes a trip to a strange place like Timbuktu, Mali and by coincidence he meets a guy from Zurich there, he will be full of emotion, be very pleased to see a country fellowman and will have dinn...

La crème de la crème
2007-07-30 22:40:00
I have reduced the number of my favorite blogs. For several reasons. The main one is that I have no time to follow all of them. This might have a negative impact on my number of visitors. But my aim is not to have just a number of visitors. I would like to have visitors that are returning with pleasure to my blog. So it is a twofold quality bit. I would like to make quality comments on your blogs. And I need time to follow your blogs. They are the "cream of the cream". My choice was easy. It is the ones I have visited the most frequently because I am attracted by these blogs. Because they are of quality. They give me something. And they make me post comments all the time.I am happy with my choice. And I profit to say to all of you, my favorites, thank you for the joy you are giving me.And some advertising: Please look at my blog on 1st of August.
Email Exchange and a Tribute to a Great Man
2007-07-28 17:42:00
As life has it, people come and go. This is the case of my direct supervisor who is leaving Darfur after 2 years and moves to Zimbabwe. A great move for him, because it is a family duty station and he will have his wife and newborn son with him. He is a great man. These are the words he wrote us in his last email when he left:I have been thinking about what to say in my last message to you: I could give you chitchat or talk to you as friend and share some thoughts out of my personal experience here in Darfur. Well, you decide which one of the two is the following. Some time ago I went to al Salam Camp.Trucks with IDP were arriving in this camp on daily basis, I was told. I went there to see by myself the influx and have an idea of the number.I have observed the arrival of few of these trucks that day. Trucks loaded with people who had traveled few days under the sun and the dust. One truck in particular attracted my attention. There was this woman holding a baby in her arms, waiting...

Thirteen Things from Me1. Wilhelm Tell. The Swiss national hero. They say he did not exist.2. Albert Einstein. He was a genius, I am not. He screamed ?Eureka? when he made his discovery. I scream ?Eureka? when I have 1?000 visitors more. And both of us like to pull our tongue.3. Zubin Metha. A wonderful conductor of many symphony orchestras.4. Bernard Kouchner. Founder of ?Médécins sans frontières? and the first UN governor of Kosovo.5. Micheline Calmy-Rey. The President of Switzerland (only for one year) and Swiss Minister of Foreign Affairs. An outstanding person, with a lot of courage and one of the first to promote the independence of Kosovo.6. Christoph Blocher (You don?t know him). Swiss Minister of Justice. A man in the wrong place. He should not be in government. I don?t understand the Swiss (not only for this).7. Ruth Metzler (You don?t know her). Former Swiss Minister of Justice (just before Christoph Blocher). 2007-07-26 03:44:00
Just before putting up "Thursday Thirteen" later today. A sleepless night. Only the second one this year. Nothing to worry about. So I am roaming around. And look at your blogs. And have two I discovered (I will put them in the favorites, they are "extra"):Jennifer has another blog called "How To Tell if a Guy is a Jerk". I enjoyed it a lot, I am convinced you too. And I will visit it regularely and also contribute with comments. I am certain to have many. And perhaps people might think that I am not a jerk (oer perhaps that I am one). And Titania is taking us on a dream ride on her other blog "Riding the Astral Plane ". This blog is very deep and people will only gain from visiting it.So, if there are any jerks out there, here is what to do to become "un-jerked":Go and find "Goodness Graciousness" and meditate on what you see and read there. After "Ride the Astral Plane" and I am sure that it will help you "Finding Life 's Enchantments". And finally you might discover that "How To Te...

2007-07-24 05:11:00
I dedicate this one to "Hafez of Arabia".There is only one thing ?wrong? with his blog: You need to speak English AND German. These are the languages he is writing his posts in. For the time being. But might it be that he will post in future also in Arabic and Albanian? A mystery. Like the man himself. He is a mystery. Is he really Hafez? Or is he someone else? He says he is living in Beirut. But what if he came from some mountain region in Switzerland? Or from a town at the foot of a Kosovo mountain range?Being in the fortunate position of speaking both English and German (and French and bits of a few other languages). I have no problem of ?following? his posts. They are very pertinent. With a lot of sense. With a deep sense, many times. And often with a lot of humor and sometimes with a bit of sarcasm. Which I like very much. And he is really good at it. Because (and that is one part of the mystery I lift) he is, among other things, a journalist.I do not know if I can use the word...

I found this on "Titania's" blog: You can now also "comment" my posts by clicking the appropriate icon below the post. I think this is neat and so I copied it. Which is, of course, not the first time to copy something I have seen "somewhere else". And on "whenn's" blog I discovered the "widgetbox". I am sure to find something there also to put on my blog (I already have seen a nice radiation watch, for instance). But the day will come when I will find something to put on my blog NOBODY ever has seen before.

Thursday Thirteen, Nr. 9, about Cars
2007-07-19 03:29:00
Thirteen Things from Me1. If I had money, I would not buy a Rolls Royce. But a Bentley. They have more spirit.2. I have no money, but my dream car is in my garage: A Mini Cooper.3. A long time ago, in South Africa, I went to drive-in cinema with my car. That was nice.4. My brother owns a Rolls Royce from 1934. And a Ferrari. For his day to day life he just uses a Mercedes S class. He does not brag about it and would probably be angry with me for telling you. That is why I love him.5. When I was young, I did silly things in my car (yes, ?this? too).6. I love Citroën cars. My first one was the famous 2CV (?Two Horses?). Then a BX. And now, since eleven years, a Xantia Break. Which still has a modern shape.7. Another long time ago, in Rwanda, I was on mission with a VW Beetle. Two flat tires, no more spare. It took me 6 hours to dismantle the tires, take the tubes out, refill the tires with banana leaves. And then 12 hours to drive 50 km back. To the relief of my buddies who were worri...

Humanitarians
2007-07-16 06:05:00
I dedicate this post to the people in the photo above. They are my dear colleagues and some of them even very dear friends. They are from Ethiopia, Sudan, Sweden, Angola, Spain, Irak, Colombia, Kenya, Yemen, Somalia, Malaysia and, of course, Switzerland. Others, not in the photo, are from Italy, Nepal and Bosnia. A small United Nations. Together we are working hard every day so that many (very many) people in distress get their suffering alleviated. A little bit. We are working for the United Nations World Food Programme, simply known as WFP. It does not matter if there is a natural catastrophe, a man made catastrophe or war or conflict. WFP, being the world?s biggest humanitarian agency, is always present to assist people with food. Of course, other needs have to be covered too and other agencies intervene also. WFP is always rapid to start an emergency operation by sending people on the spot immediately and often when security situations are still volatile. Because time i...

I received an award. I am tickled. Especially after the ?bad? PG rating I got (see my post ?Utterly shattered and completely destroyed? of 5th of July). ?whenn? nominated me.I am very pleased to have my first award, the "Schmooze Award ". And now, I should, like when you get an Oscar or an Academy Award, make a speech. But as you know, I do copy items from different blogs when I like them. And so I will not be genuine and original and simply thank ?whenn? and the blogger community by quoting two descriptions of what ?schmooze? is about. They are from two friends who got the award also. ?Titania? and ?whenn?, my ?mentor. Here is the lovely statement of Titania:Schmoozing as defined by Dictonary.com is the ability ?to converse casually, especially in order to gain an advantage or make a social connection.? When it comes to blogging, schmoozing is your ticket to making new friends, getting yourself noticed and building a reputation. Some bloggers are gifted with the ability to effectivel...
Exit for "Friday Fourteen"
2007-07-13 13:24:00
That?s it. I have will not make a ?Frida y Fourteen? anymore. Of course, I enjoyed very much to do this. But!!I started my blog a little bit more then a year ago. At first, hesitant. And then, with time, more and more assured. It was like when I started with internet, some 15 years ago. I was actually one of the first customers of my Swiss provider. Today my provider has 3.5 million customers (just to remind you, Switzerland as some 7.5 million inhabitants). When I went on to the net I was roaming around for hours and hours. With my wife asking me: ?Would you have some time for me??. Eventually I did. And as time went by I ?cooled? down. With blogging it is exactly the same thing. I discovered the blogs, I did roam around and then I became more selective. Everybody has a blogroll or a list of favorites. And some lists are awfully long. In those lists, you show the world the blogs you like. And how can you like 3?786 blogs? I have 25 in my list. And no intention to make the list bigge...
Thursday Thirteen, Nr. 8, about People
2007-07-12 04:08:00
Thirteen Things from Me1. People , like you and me, make up this world. Bad people try to make the world bad. Good people try to fight this. They must be outnumbering the bad ones, because the world is still good.2. Most of the people don?t like their President. But then he gets reelected. In a free, democratic country.3. Why do people complain when they have an efficient transport systems and the trains run 3 minutes late?4. People travel a lot. By air. With new security restrictions in Europe. With limited items to be allowed on board. But they take more and hold up a smooth flow at the security check. And argue uselessly with airport staff.5. Why do people not thank more often or tell someone ?I love you??6. Some people have an atrocious behavior, are bad, do a lot of harm and think they will go into paradise. Because on Sunday, at church when money is collected, they show their 100 dollar bill for everybody to see.7. Some people have a developed a big sense of hospitality. And mo...

7 New Wonders of the World
2007-07-08 16:55:00
Yesterday was the presentation of the ?7 New Wonders of the World ?. The ceremony happened in Lisbon, Portugal. For years the search for these new sites has been going on, to be finalized on the special yesterday?s date of 07.07.07. Many places all over the world were listed as possible candidates. Regions, particular sites, cities and sumptuous building were among them.I participated in the ?discovery? of these potential ?7 New Wonders of the World? by casting my vote several times. Out of my 7 candidates two ?made? it and are now classified: The Great Wall of China and The Taj Mahal in India. Three other did not make it, but were finalists: The Eiffel Tower in Paris, the city of Timbuktu in Mali and the Haga Sophia in Istanbul.I do not put any pictures in this post for you to discover these marvelous sites. A bit lower down on my blog you have the section ?Visit these friendly sites?. When you click on ?A world of wonders? you will be directed to the 7 Wonders website where you can ...

That is what I am.There you get up early in the morning, as usual, and decide to visit some of your friends blogs. And you choose at random. And then you come, for instance, to Titania's blog. And, as usual, enjoy what you see. And, as often, discover new things or widgets. Which you want to try. And I did. I rated my blog. Very confident that I will get the "best" rating. And here is what I got:Destroyed, that is what I am. I never thought that I could be such a bad influence. Their rating is based on two issues. The word "steal" which appears one times on my blog. And the word "fart" which appears 8 times (!) on my blog. Which of course will be an ongoing thing when I make references or comments on my friend Bills's "Welcome to the Old Fart's Blog".But then I think the rating people have it all wrong. I am sure it is not the word "fart" that is offensive, but rather the word "Welcome". How will I get out of this? How will I get a good rating? I have to think. But as an emergenc...

Ageless, young, old, silly?
2007-07-04 15:40:00
Young and silly. Probably that is what we all where. Or stupid. Or childish. And then we grew up. We became more ?ripe? and mature as we started to gain life experience. And as time goes by this experience grows and deepens. We get older. But do we get more serious. Probably yes, because we all have events and things happening to us that will make us think and reflect. And perhaps change the course of our live. But will we really grow 100 percent?Me, I am not. And sometimes I am a bit silly or even childish. Yes, yes. And at my age I am not even ashamed to say it. For example, look at this ?thing? below. The kids love it. They can play all sorts of video games on it, they can watch movies on it, they can put music on it and the can make photo libraries with it. And even go on internet with it. They can play with two stations (and make golf parties) and the can ?hook? it to a screen. I love it too. I have one.?Everbody?s Golf?, ?Sudoku?, ?Pilot Academy? and ?Texas Poker? are my favori...
