Backlog is not only happening in work, but also in blogging.Let?s talk about the work first. These days I have been very busy and that is why there was a ?hole? in the posting sequence. On Friday, the only day off in the week, I did my laundry and then I slept a bit.We are in the middle of the year and are renegotiating the contracts with our partners who are distributing food to displaced people. This is a tedious process because our partners try to get as much money as possible and we, of course, try to pay as little as possible. But a good price. Because we need to have performing partners. Negotiations are sometimes harsh and they are very time consuming.Of course, our partners have to get funds to operate and on the other hand we are accountable to our donors, and among them the biggest, the US. One day I will make a ?technical? post about this. So, I have been very busy the last few days and was not able to go much on the internet. Whereby I also have to say that presently I am...

Friday Fourteen 4: Old Fart
2007-06-29 09:11:00
I dedicate this one to ?Old Fart ? and ?Welcome to the Old Fart?s Blog?.Here is the introduction to himself he put on his blog: ?Born in Nova Scotia in 1960, moving to Calgary in April, 1996, for over 20 years I was a 35mm Film Projectionist. In May of 2003 I decided to improve my life and make it better. I took an early buyout and went back to school. I am now a Certified Computer Technician, but I am presently working in the Customer Accounts Department for a Western Communications Company?.Now it could be that he is a ?fart?, but he is definitely not old. I tried to find out his real name. Either I did not find or see it (his blog is huge) or he did not put it. And simply wants to be known as ?Old Fart?. I am sure he is happy with this ?screen name?. And obviously many, many people are happy with it.His visitors are from many countries and among them ?exotic? places: Guam, Cambodia, Morocco, China, Sudan (must be me connecting with my mobile phone when our ?system? is down) and My...

Thursday Thirteen, Nr. 6, about Friends
2007-06-27 21:48:00
Thirteen Things from Me1. We went to school together, 55 years ago. And we always came late. Every day. Because on the way to school there were a lot of interesting things to see. More interesting then school. We were friends. That was a long time ago. Now I have lost him out of sight.2. We were in the army together, 42 years ago. We have not seen each other for many years. We are now both working for a Government agency. He is in the diplomatic service, I serve in the development service. And we write each other about 2 or 3 times a year.3. We worked together in Kosovo, 5 years ago. He is from there, I am from Switzerland. We phone each other once a week. And his wife has seen my ?bum?. Because I was sick and she gave me a ?shot?. Because she is a nurse.4. We were together in Rwanda, 40 years ago. Then we went together to South Africa. He is still there and has become a big boss. I have seen him last three years ago.5. We are both railroad fans. He works as a prison guard and is in...

Hello, I am here again
2007-06-25 21:46:00
I made it back yesterday. And immediately was "assaulted" by my colleagues. Of course, in a friendly way. And drowned instantly in work. Today, however, I was able to prepare a post.As "hinted" I have translated Hafez's comment to my "Thursday Thirteen" post. It might not be perfect, but I guess I was able to "render" it properly. What is in green color is Hafez's "own", what is in red color are my "additions" and the rest is the article written by Friedemann Bartu for the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung", Switzerland 's best daily newspaper in German language, well renowned also internationally. The article was written at the occasion of Expo 02, the Swiss National Fair which normally takes place every 25 years. And here it is:I love Switzerland!! Switzerland of the ?Non-Swiss?Hafez (PS: Swiss by birth our family lived already in the region of the actual Swiss Confederation when the Canton of the Grisons did not exist but rather the Free State of the Three Federations and my Great-grand-gra...

Hafez left a long, a very long, comment on my "Thursday Thirteen". It is written in German. As soon as I am back in my "duty station" I will translate it (providing having Hafez's permission) into English and make a post with it to share it with you all. It is something special about "certain" Swiss citizens.

Thursday Thirteen, Nr. 5, about Switzerland
2007-06-21 06:25:00
Thirteen Things from ME1. Switzerland is a beautiful country. That is what foreigners say. As we are ?neutral?, I say nothing.2. Switzerland is independent since 1291. But we are dependant on others.3. We joined the UN in 2003. Until then, only two countries were not members of the UN: The Vatican and Switzerland.4. We are not member of the European Union. I don?t know when we will be member of it. But I know that Kosovo will be member before us.5. The Swiss do not only make watches, cheese and chocolates. And they don?t yodel and blow Alphorn all day long.6. Switzerland has the most performing public transport system in the world. Statistically, every inhabitant lives 300 metres from a stop/station.7. Switzerland is landlocked. Three quarters of it is mountainous. Perhaps it is because of this that our minds are it locked too.8. My dream Swiss watch is a Leonardo da Vinci by IWC. It costs 25?000 dollars. I don?t think that my dream will become true.9. I am always glad to come back ...

A King's (not Arthur) table (not a round one)
2007-06-18 14:35:00
I mentionned it before: I am a member in a brotherhood. The "Confrérie du Guillon". Now I have no idea how I could translate the word "Guillon" into English.I am proud to be a member of this "Confrérie" which takes its members back to Middle Age. At least when it comes to ceremonies. The brotherhood has one aim, which might be futile for many people, but is very important for us, the members: To celebrate to glory of the wine. Not wine in general, but specifically the wine from our state, Vaud, in the French part of Switzerland. The castle of Chillon which I pictured in my previous post serves also as "home" for the Confrérie. Besides other "happenings", twice a year, in spring and in autumn, we have our gatherings in the castle to perform our celebrations. Some eventful and unforgettable evenings. As a "knight" or a "companion" I can invite four guests for the evening. The participants gather around 6.30 p.m. Everybody is nicely dressed, the men in tuxedos or in dark suits, the ladie...

I have changed residence, temporarely
2007-06-17 07:36:00
I made it back home. Safely, but tired. Today is Sunday. And I will consecrate the day entirely (or at least, most of it) to my family. The more so as everybody is around. And tomorrow I will be with you "full blast".I changed my residence for a week. From my "bush" container to my beautiful apartment on the shores of Lake Geneva. Which, if you make a search in Google pictures, you will see is a very beautiful region. In the vicinity of my town is the famous castle of "Chillon". You remember that I told you that I am in some brotherhood. This castle is very important in this. I will talk about it soon.I found the picture on some site from Finland. Dr. John, I have to warn you. In case you would like to change YOUR residence: The castle is not for sale!!

Thursday Thirteen, Nr. 4, about my stars
2007-06-14 05:06:00
Thirteen Things from Me1. David Gilmore and Pink Floyd. Today, they all look like business men, accountants, doctors or lawyers. And their music is still the top of everything.2. Meryl Streep. An extraordinary actress. And a very classic beauty. Also a tender one.3. Tom Hanks. A true giant when it comes to acting.4. Barbra Streisand. The clearest voice. If a voice can shine like diamonds then she has 24 karats.5. Clint Eastwood. From spaghetti western actor changed into one of the best movie directors.6. Julia Roberts. My baby. When she got her Oscar, I had tears in my eyes.7. Count Basie. A swinging piano player with a dream big band. Famous for its rhythm section.8. Shania Twain. A sunshine. Phantastic songs, phantastic shows. You get your money?s worth.9. The Belushi brothers. One an amazing actor, the other an amazing musician.10. Meg Ryan. I would like to take her in my arms.11. Denzel Washington. Any kind of movie fits him.12. Dolly Parton. Country music would be nothing witho...

2007-06-13 05:41:00
Tomorrow I will fly, providing that the airplane can come and land (we have some sandstorms lately), to Khartoum. And Friday night I continue to Switzerland. For one week. This is my last ?life? post until Sunday. Of course, tomorrow before going to the airport I will put up my ?Thursday Thirteen?. It is ready. But there will be no ?Friday Fourteen? this week. One week of rest. It is not much, considering the distance I have to pass, but it is most welcome. It is just that we are in a phase of negotiating new agreements with our partners for the rest of the year. One week is enough to ?change? your mind and to do nice things. And to make a big ?curve? away from any mobile phone shop. Because if I buy a new mobile phone (my last purchase was in October) I would have a lot of troubles explaining to my wife why I ?needed? a new mobile phone. And I admit, I have ?run? out of justifications. The problem is that every time Nokia (that is what I use since years) brings out a new model (and th...

Friday Fourteen 3: Dr. John
2007-06-08 06:58:00
I dedicate this one to Dr. John and Dr. John?s Fortress.Dr. John is a monument and a giant in the blogger?s world. A giant because he has over 800 posts. I just have over 100. A giant because he gets a big number of comments to every one of his posts. I get many times zero comments. A giant because his blog is powerful.Though surrounded by thick walls (real ones or imaginary ones?) of his fortress, he is open to the world. And what kind of a world! A 360 degree sharing world. I owe him a lot.Because he ends every post with ?The link of the day?. He does not just link to a blog, but he also comments the blog. One day he stumbled on my blog, linked and commented it. And this had a very positive effect on my visitor?s number. They increased from the moment he linked/commented me. In return, I ?put? him in my favorites. There is a tiny problem though. His name does not appear, just ?- -?. So when you see this on my blog, its ?him?.The nice thing about getting linked by Dr. John is that...

Thursday Thirteen, Nr. 3, about food
2007-06-07 03:24:00
Thirteen Things from Me1. Food and water: Without it we would not be here to write blogs.2. Fast food, quick food, junk food. I hate it. But millions love it.3. I am a knight in a brotherhood. Twice a year we celebrate a lavish ceremony with exquisite food and delicious wines.4. Röschti, a Swiss National dish, is my favorite.5. How can one eat frog legs?6. Bread smells nice when it is freshly baked.7. T-Bone steaks are great, lobsters too.8. Food from all the countries inspire me. Even camel milk. And roasted locusts.9. Genetically modified food should be banned.10. Canned food can be tasty. If properly prepared.11. Spaghetti bolognaise. Don?t cook this when you invite an Italian for dinner. Your life might be at risk.12. An immense pleasure: French cuisine.13. My colleagues and I work very hard so that thousands of people get something to eat every month. My friends, you have disappeared!!
2007-06-05 16:45:00
"These are my favorite blogs" does not exist anymore!? Do I not have favorite blogs? Of course, I do. 23 of them. But I decided to clean up again a bit and take "useless" things off my blog. Now, a favorite blog directory is not useless. It just so happens that the blogroll did not update anymore and since yesterday not even show up. And it was also "far down the line" on the left sunny side of the street. And there was "wind" of duplication. The second Technorati widget, sofar called "Updated" has been renamed "My favorite blogs". You are now in a prominent position, just after the "Breaking News" widget. And still in the number of 23.So, you disappeared. Only to reappear a bit more convenient. And to make my short post a bit longer, here a picture "d'ambiance".

A bit of advertising (a tiny, wee bit)
2007-06-04 16:21:00
You might remember that a few posts ago (actually many posts ago) I was talking about sites I have subscribed to which should give me some income. Which I would donate to charity until I am retired. And then I will/should benefit from it. I also promised that I would give an update on how I am faring: Well, not very good. I do get some income, but it is not worthwhile the time you spend on it. I am not very proud of this.Time you loose and cannot use to take care of your blogger friends. And that is the essence. My blog is not a commercial money making blog and never will be. I simply want to share my "things" with you. And to build a community of blog friends. This I have achieved and the community is growing. I am very proud of this. There are however widgets on my blog which either generate some money or have other benefits. Here is a brief description of them (and I promise that I will limit the number of such widgets).THE GOOD BLOGS. No money involved. If you join this, your blo...

I am not afraid
2007-06-03 17:45:00
I am not afraid to die. But I am terribly afraid not to live anymore. Because I still have many, many things to do.You see, I expect nothing from life anymore. No, no, I am not fed up. But because life has given me everything I can expect. A happy family, an interesting job, good health and a lot of excitement. And I do not have a Rolls Royce with golden door handles in my projects. So I just enjoy every new day that comes. It is the greatest gift: Wake up in the morning. And that is all I expect and for a very, very long time to come.I have acquired a tremendous wealth (no, not in my bank account). A wealth of knowledge and perhaps a wealth of wisdom (but that is not for me to judge). And I am still "hungry" for it an d want know more. Because with all that I know, I fee l that I still know little. And there is  muchmore to know. And to know more, I have to live for a long time to come. Otherwise I cannot quench my "thirst". So to ease my "hunger" and my "thirst" I will have to take a ...

I get angry about twice per year, generally at the beginning of the year and in the middle. And the other 363 days I move on cool. And on a few extremely rare occasions I get ?pissed?. If you ask me when this happened the last time, I would not really remember. However, I don?t forget one date I was really pissed off. October 13, 2000.The 90ties were really a bad period for the Balkans and in particular Yugoslavia. The country broke up during that period and there were wars all over between the different states of this former federal republic. The last war was in Kosovo.Switzerland, with a population of around 7.5 million, has roughly 20 % foreigners living in good order, with residence permits and paying income tax probably better then the Swiss (myself, I am lousy payer and get continuously reminders from the Administration). Around 200?000 people from Kosovo live in Switzerland. When the war broke out in Kosovo, about 54?000 refugees came to Switzerland. But not with the intentio...

Friday Fourteen 2: Titania
2007-06-01 07:42:00
I dedicate this to Titania and ?Finding Life?s Enchantments?.To be blunt: She has it all wrong! Why? Every Frida y Titania posts her ?Friday Feast?. And that is a gross understatement. Why? Because her blog is a ?24 hours, 7 days, 12 month, 1 year? feast. It is Mark Twain, Grimm Brother?s, Hans Christian Andersen and Antoine de Saint Exupéry combined.A permanent fairy tale? It is perhaps the best expression for this blog. But then I wonder, if I am really doing honor to it. One thing is for certain. If you look for enchantments, here you find them. And honestly, there is no need to go and look further.Though being a man and my favorite color being green, the various pink shades of Titania?s blog have a soothing effect on my eyes. And invite to linger. As you look at the posts, you see that they are ?stuffed? with pictures, videos, gadgets and of course the text. How to best describe her texts? Funny, witty, not serious, very serious, touching, tender, soft, hard? I think all of the fo...
Thursday Thirteen, Nr. 2, about countries
2007-05-31 04:51:00
Thirteen Things from Me1. Rwanda (1965 ? 1967): My first country abroad. Beautiful. In the heart of Africa. Friendly people. In 1994 they started to kill each other.2. South Africa (1967 ? 1969): Paradise on earth, if it where not for the (now disappeared) Apartheid. I made my private pilots license there. And an unhappy marriage (not with a South African).3. Belgium (1969 ? 1972): Rain in the sky, sun in the heart. The Belgians are wonderful people. It does not matter if they are Flemish or Walloons. And at 3 a.m. you can go out and eat a ?steak, frites, salade?. In Switzerland , the sleep at this time.4. Ghana (1972 ? 1975): Humid, but good temperature. Precursor of African Independence. Kwame Nkrumah, Pan-African leader. Good Star, Club and other beer. At that time the world?s biggest producer of cocoa. My son is born there.5. Mauritania (1975 ? 1979): Islamic Republic, but soft. Blue men in the desert. 700 km of beaches. 1?000 expatriates. All at the same place. Except my family....

I have nothing to say
2007-05-30 05:20:00
Which is not true. I have a million things to say. But somehow it just does not come "out". Normally, I sit down and start to type. And it flows. But since 2 days I am like a "dry waterhole". Perhaps my "piping" is blocked? And I have no worries. Just that I will renegociate in the next few days agreements with our cooperating partners for the next six month. And that involves a lot of money. Might this be it?A missed "N" in my previous post led to some confusion. I will not be participating in the G8. The Japanese TV comes here and films us and then broadcasts it live into the G8 summit. At least, that is what I understood. And it seems that the G8 countries want to solve quite some outstanding issues before/during the summit. Perhaps they will give Kosovo its independance? And here some "technical" things. I have simplified my "twitter" message box. The fancy one did not work properly. So I have now simply a text for my messages to you. The particular picture is now bigger and in t...

But these days again we have to prepare for a big Japan ese TV crew who wants to film here and the live broadcast for the G8 summit. This means I will have to shave. As soon I can, I will tag you people also.Small thing 2: You comment on my posts. And some of your comments require answers. I would like you to know that I answer generally not below your comments on my blog but on a post of your blog. As a rule, I will comment your post and then make a PS with my answer to your comment.

Dentists. I feel like a star
2007-05-28 17:57:00
By now, you, friends, who are following me since quite some time, have gotten acquainted with the life I am ?leading?. And I have often lived (if not to say most of the time) away from facilities. Like good medical care. And I needed such care many times. And had to do with what was around. Somehow it worked, otherwise I would not be around to blog. And then I don?t want to give you now all my ?health? stories. It could though be one day a good Thursday Thirteen ?input?.I will tell you one ?health? story. ?Old Fart? gave me the idea in his comment on my last post. It is a dentist story. And it covers a span of around 40 years. But with holes (not only in my teeth) between 1975 and 1998.I hate dentists. Not as persons. All the ones I had to do with were extremely nice people. That is about all. When you enter their office, they welcome you they smile at you. They ask you what they can do for you. And then they make you sit on their very comfortable chair (or is it a bed?). Still smil...

Two month and 6 days ago, I had the 2000th visitor on my blog. This morning at 5.53 a.m. I had my 5000th visitor. I am pleased and very tickled about it. And I reviewed my statistics. My permanent visitors have increased from 5 to 8.1 %. And the "quickers" have dropped from 78 to 71 %.Thank you all. And a particular huge THANK YOU to all my faithful blogger companions. You visit me almost daily and leave your comments. I want the world to know about you. And that is why you appear in a "prominent" position on my blog, in the "Breaking News", the "Updated" and "Things I like to share". This is my gospel.***To celebrate I will listen to the "Song of Joy" from Ludwig van Beethoven. Which is by the way the anthem of the European Union. A powerful piece of music.

As I ?threatened? last week I start today to write about your blogs. This is now my first ?Frida y Fourteen?. I dedicate it to Anji and ?Time and Oft?.There are many ways of telling stories. And also many ways of presenting them. Anji?s ?top line? on the blog says ?A blog about things that I'm interested in and I'm interested in a lot of things (But the postcards took over)?. The postcards! What a fascinating, interesting, lovely, tender and touching way to tell us stories. With postcards! And not just postcards you can go and buy at a newsstand or a kiosk. No, but old postcards. Anji found them in auctions, after probably hours of rummaging through boxes full with all sorts of things. With pictures and photographs that were not made with digital or ?throw away? cameras. And the photographer took a long time to set up his tripod and put the big heavy wooden camera box on top of it. Then he put his head under the black piece of cloth to take the picture. And at that time they did not ...

What you see below is quiet interesting. I found this on Bravenet. ARAcontent permits you to post articles free of charge. Or to use them if you are publishing a newspaper or a community/association/club journal. I glanced through the categorie of articles. Nice. Of course, some articles are "neutral" and some are pure publicity. I thought I give it a try. And: It does not involve money, no income scheme or commissions. Depending the echo from your side, I will publish from time to time stories from ARA. Only from time to time. Because I don't want them to substitute MY posting. Here is number 1:Do You Think Green When You Travel?(ARA) - Think "green" when you travel? Eco-tourism is a growing movement that encourages environmentally responsible travel around the world.?Regardless of where you plan to visit this summer, being kind to Mother Nature during your travels is easier than you may think,? said Jeanenne Diefendorf, Orbitz Travel Insider. ?Whether you rent a hybrid car, choos...

2007-05-17 17:55:00
So it seems to work again. I was frustrated because I could not post. Everything was messed up and I don?t know why. It seems that now everything is back in order. My mission has left. This was in the last 6 weeks our third mission. All three of them were very high level. And of course it takes a lot of our time. We have to accompany them day in day out. They like to see many things. How we work, does our work help? Are we efficient? Do we see the problems? Or rather, do they see the problems? And we have to prepare briefing notes. That takes also much of our time. Because every mission has a different agenda. And also, figures and activities shown change from day to day. So one cannot simply give to the third mission the same document the first mission received. The nice thing is that most of the time we receive very comforting emails after they have gone. And during social moments, our visitors express their admiration for our dedication. This encourages us to go on. And encourageme...

My 100th post (and a missed birthday party)
2007-05-17 08:02:00
This is my 100th posts. I am proud. But I am still a "small boy" compared to Dr. John who celebrated his 800th post a few days ago. Well, I hope that I will be able to reach that number one day.To celebrate this event I wanted my post to be flashy. Not possible, mushkila, nada. I do not know what is happening since yesterday. The posting site looks funny, I cannot add anything or edit pictures. This can happen but what worries me is that you all on blogspot seemed to be able to post normally? So my "birthday party" is postponed. But I will celebrate this 100th post ASAP.
