Boris Grebenshikov Concert
2007-05-22 16:50:00
Royal Albert Hall Yesterday, was the Boris Grebenshikov Concert at the Royal Albert Hall. I have to admit it was the first Rock concert I've been to. I enjoyed it alot. The music was very good. A mixture of rock and more spiritual /folk music. Singers from the Sri Chinmoy Centre, sang 2 songs in honour of Boris Grebenshikov. They did a really great job, to sing in the middle of a concert. It was definitely a hard act to follow aquarium! The Royal Albert Hall is a really great venue, it was great to see it filled for the concert. Boris Grebenshikov Music

Morecambe F.C. hit the big Time
2007-05-21 06:50:00
One of my earliest sporting memories was watching More cambe F.C play Goole , the northern Premier League, Boxing day 1984. They were currently 2 divisions below the football league. At the time it was a huge gulf in finance, and quality of play. There were no stands either side of the pitch, which didn't really matter because there were only about 150 spectators in attendance. (about 10% of those were me and my relatives). My Uncle, Michael Berry, has watched Morecambe F.C. for over 60 - 70 years (he probably doesn't read the internet, so it doesn't matter if I exaggerate a little). My cousin Andrew, frequently goes to all games home and away. I think he once got a mention in the Morecambe F.C. programme for not missing a game all season. Anyway, yesterday was Morecambe' finest hour, getting promoted from non league football, to English football league 2. They beat Exeter City 2-1 at the new Wembley, and so make the great transition. I hope playing in the football league will n...

William Blake: Greatest Briton
2007-05-19 15:44:00
A while back the BBC had a poll to find out the "Top 100 greatest Briton". Predictably the winner was Winston Churchill. In many ways Churchill deserves it. He was the emblem of our fight against Hitler and Nazism. As a person he had many great qualities. But, he also had many failings, not least his Imperialism. Anyway my choice for greatest Briton would be William Blak e . Why? He was a great Poet. He was a genuine mystic who could see beyond the ordinary world. To see a world in a grain of sand And heaven in a wild flower Hold infinity in the palm of your hand And eternity in an hour." From: Auguries of Innocence He was a passionate critic of slavery, ignorance and oppression. - You feel in reading Blake he really identifies with other people's suffering. Thus Blake was able to give us a vision of immortality, but at the same time he shone a light on the ignorance of the time. Poetry of Blake at Poet Seers I wrote more on this at Greatest Briton's

Six and 10 Ten Days at Sri Chinmoy Races
2007-05-10 14:13:00
In New York the runners have recently finished the 6 day and 10 day race. For us lesser mortals, it is basically a running race where you try to run as far as you can in 10 days. The winner of the 6 day race was a mild mannered Fin - Asprihanal Aalto. Asprihanal of Sri Chinmoy MT completed 505 miles in 6 days. That's an average of just under 90 miles per day. Including 92 miles on the last and final day. Mind boggling as it may be, to Asprihanal, 500 miles in a 6 day race is almost like a warm up for the mammoth, 3100 mile race. Asprihanal, has the second best all time record for this distance at, 43 days and 15 hours. Results of the 6 day race can be found here at: Sri Chinmoy Races Unique 6 day experiences by Mark Dorian at Multidays For those interested in Multidays Abichal produces a very good magazine Multidays at Multidayrunning.com

Secrets of Longevity...
2007-04-28 06:09:00
A 116 year old Ukrainian, who is one of the oldest living people, attributes his longevity to two things: celibacy and being stupid. Hryhoriy Nestor, has never had a wife, and as a Christian has practised the philosophy of no sex before marriage. "According to my Christian beliefs there is no sex before marriage, so I never had a wife." He went on to say that people who get married spend all the time arguing. He also believes that leading a simple life leads to longevity. "People, who know too much always come to a nasty end. better to stay stupid and not wonder too much about anything." Nestor used to work as a shepherd of goats. It would make an interesting self help book. "The Secrets of Long -life: Celibacy and Stupidity" - but I can't see it selling too many copies... Writing and when to use a Comma.
2007-04-27 11:29:00
Quite recently, I have become motivated to learn proper grammar and punctuation. Previously, I never really bothered about grammar, much to the chagrin of my sister - Lynne. In fact, I have often "joked" about grammar; see these posts on: "Eats, Shoots and Leaves." "Rules for Gooder English" My philosophy is that to learn something, you need to teach it. I hope these are all correct: 12 Rules for Using the Comm a My New Wordpress Blog: Net Writing

George Orwell
2007-04-26 14:39:00
During my school years, one of the few authors I read, (apart from Tolkien) was George Orwell . At the time, I was fascinated with his books, "Homage to Catalonia", "The Road to Wigan Pier", and "Down and Out in Paris and London". A feature of Orwell's writings, was that he always seemed able to see both points of view. Thus, although he was a committed Socialist, he powerfully portrayed the failings of his own ideological supporters. "If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear." "Sometimes the first duty of intelligent men is the restatement of the obvious. " George Orwell Quotes

Ashrita sets new Record for Backward Bowling
2007-04-20 14:50:00
Ashrita recently set a new record for backward bowling of 199. After months of practicing for over two hours every day, Furman regained the record with a 199 at the AMF Van Wyck Lanes in Richmond Hill on April 11 in front of several official scorers. It took him five practice games before he could surpass Scrandis. ?It?s a real science. It takes tremendous focus,? he said of the sport. [1] Once officially certified by Guinness, this will be Ashrita's 145th record he has broken since 1979 Ashrita currently holds 62 recoreds I only saw Ashrita once or twice during my stay in New York. One time was just after he had broken a new record for backward bowling. Ashrita was very happy and full of energy and enthusiasm. I think 199 is a pretty good score bowling forward let alone going backwards. This photo is from Ashrita's blog entry about his first record attempt. Power of Positive Thinking Ashrita is a student of Sri Chinmoy and manages a health food store on Parsons Boulevard, Jam...

They that have power to hurt
2007-04-01 05:34:00
They That have power to hurt They that have power to hurt and will do none That do not do the thing they most do show, Who, moving others, are themselves as stone, Unmoved, cold, and to temptation slow; They rightly do inherit heaven?s graces And husband nature?s riches from expense; They are the lords and owners of their faces, Others but stewards of their excellence. The summer?s flower is to the summer sweet, Though to itself it only live and die, But if that flower with base infection meet, The basest weed outbraves his dignity: For sweetest things turn sourest by their deeds; Lilies that fester smell far worse than weeds. William Shakespeare (Sonnet 94)

Charitable Works of Princess Diana
2007-03-24 16:45:00
Princess Diana Much has been written about Princess Diana there seems little to add. Since her death her legacy seems to have been overshadowed by endless speculation about the nature of the car crash. It must have been on the front page of the Daily Mail more often than their beloved ?House price crash imminent stories?. Anyway ignoring all the flotsam and jetsam Princess Diana did do much good work for charity she was definitely sincere in her aspiration to alleviate the suffering of even those who were marginalized by society.
