New plugins 11/2007
2007-11-19 21:58:00
Some plugins are headed for the trash bin, as I’ve discovered ones that work better with WP2.3. There’s one that I liked right away: a plugin by the great Alex King, called Articles. It lets you output a list of featured posts anywhere you want to put it. Takes some work, but well worth the ...

Beware of phishing
2007-11-15 04:02:00
Recently, a blogger acquaintance of mine got his Gmail account hacked into and hijacked. The hijacker then proceeded to send out scam emails to this blogger’s contacts, basically asking for money. My friend, Richard, may have been a victim of phishing. As a result, he couldn’t access his Blogger account either, so he had to ...

Blogging 101 now set
2007-11-12 16:31:00
As I’ve mentioned before, we are going to do a Blogging 101 seminar-workshop here in Davao City. This will now be a project of The Usual Suspects. Ria Jose and I will be taking the lead in this project. The first hands-on seminar-cum-workshop will be held on 24 November 2007 (Saturday), tentatively at the Netfront Café ...
Another way to make money
2007-11-10 12:22:00
This month I started deploying Widget Bucks ads. I found out about it from Jehz and Winston, the creators of the awesome PRC Board Exam Results blog. I’ve gone through other types of blog monetization, and I’ve rejected some of them already (like Kontera, which was really fugly). Hopefully, WidgetBucks will turn out to be a ...

Google?s PageRank, bad for PR?
2007-11-04 21:02:00
As I’m not deeply into SEO and such, I kept mum when the hullabaloo over the see-sawing of Google ’s Page Rank system washed over the blogosphere late last month. This blog — after having been pinned with a PR4 from 0 in May — suddenly went one notch down, and then back up again after a ...

New blog for T.U.S.
2007-11-04 10:31:00
Seeing the need for an online presence — and perhaps a group image — the bloggers known as The Usual Suspects have finally come up with a blog site: http://tus.davaoblogs.com. With all the references to “The Usual Suspects” in various blogs now floating around, it wouldn’t hurt to have a site to link to. ...

Post-MBS1: what?s next?
2007-11-01 13:44:00
Apart from the huge amount of blog buzz created by the participants of the 1st Mindanao Bloggers Summit, there have also been news and feature coverage by traditional media. A huge photo of Councilor Pete Laviña, myself and a group of bloggers came out on Sun•Star Davao last 29 October… An article written by Walter ...

MBS1 opening speech
2007-10-28 22:19:00
During the recently-concluded 1st Mindanao Bloggers Summit, I was asked several times for a copy of my welcome remarks, so I thought I’d share it with everyone here. (I would’ve posted this earlier, but I had to take a day off after the Summit — while it was exhilaratingly successful, the day after, I suddenly felt ...

Beyond blog monetizing
2007-10-24 09:54:00
I’ve been blogging continuously for about 10 months now, and my online money-making efforts have started to pay off. While my AdSense earnings aren’t exactly fantastic yet, my Text Link Ads, Sponsored Reviews and LinkWorth accounts are now positively picking up. But recently, blogging has provided me with more than just immediate financial results. A much ...

Of anonymous bloggers
2007-10-20 06:41:00
It was a very productive — albeit momentarily heated — meeting we had last night, a group of bloggers and an NGO representative together in a workshop at Fwendz Diner. (Btw, try their chimichanga!) It was for the MBS1 Pre-Summit Workshop, where we tackled this concern: the role of bloggers in fostering understanding & peace ...

Blogie?s blogs now on WP2.3!
2007-10-14 18:03:00
WordPress 2.3 at last! I’m talking about ALL my blogs running on WordPress — the 4 blogs that I personally author, my father’s Gospel Reflections, the blog aggregator, and several others that I maintain for other folks. Whew! But it really wasn’t all that painful. It took me just under an hour (including snacks & ...

2007-10-07 19:36:00
Two weeks ago, Word Press 2.3 was released, and now I’m contemplating on upgrading my blogs from their current WP2.2.2 version. Based on what I’ve read so far, WP2.3 promises to be an exciting development from previous releases — native support for tagging (for better SEO!), plugin ugrade alerts, and much more. Matt, the founder of WordPress, ...

Food writing session, anyone?
2007-10-04 18:02:00
Davao’s Food Huntress, My Davao City, Dbaa’s Clutter — these are a sampling of blogs whose owners write about dining experiences in Davao. I’m sure there are more out there, though. So, I’m planning a seminar on how to write well about food, with a possible side topic on food photography. (My friends Tope & ...

New service: BlogRush
2007-09-17 13:09:00
Another new blog-centric service has recently emerged, called BlogRush. I guess it’s still pretty new, judging by the look and feel of their website — plus the fact that there are still a few “Under Construction” pages in there. It looks promising, though. What BlogRush does is to provide bloggers with a way to get their ...

Poll results: Blog platforms
2007-09-01 20:14:00
From 7 July to 1 September, this poll on popular blog platforms got 45 total votes — honestly, I would’ve wanted it a bit higher than that number… oh well. Anyway, although I myself currently author / administer 7 sites using Word Press , I was actually expecting Blog spot (Blogger.com) to lead this survey. The reason I ...

Basics of writing critiques
2007-08-24 09:48:00
This isn’t new — in fact, I’ve known about this since high school when I attended a journalism workshop. I’m talking about the fundamental guidelines on writing critiques or reviews: “K-K-K”. Or, kick-kiss-kick. In other words, something positive, then negative, then positive again. Let’s suppose you’re blogging about another blog. Start off with what you think is pleasing about that site. Highlight the good stuff: What makes it an enjoyable experience reading its posts? Is the design a delight to look at? Is the sidebar (or sidebars, as the case may be) organized cleanly? Does the blog make a whole lot of sense? Then proceed to what, in your opinion, is that blog’s weak points. What do you think is wrong with it? Perhaps it’s replete with misspellings? It’s confusing to navigate? Whatever it is, be constructive, not derogatory. It’s rarely ever a good idea to be excessively critical of anything. After all, ther...

Right after the successful conduct of the Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs project, now comes the “Filipina ” Writing Project. A twisted blog awards gig

2007-08-06 19:53:00
My co-conspirator in The Usual Suspects, Andrew, blogged about Googl e ’s mathematical and financial problem-solving functionalities awhile back. The Google search bar doesn’t only return results of keyword queries, it also spits out sums, quotients, differences, even forex conversions. My own preferred use of Google’s extended facility is as a look-up tool for vocabulary. That’s right, Google ...

A conversation with Matt: short but sweet
2007-08-04 00:57:00
In my position in life, I’ve rubbed elbows with a few industry bigwigs and even some celebrities, and I don’t really get gushy nor tense around them. So last night was mildly surprising when I found myself rather schoolgirlishly nervous as I waited for my Skype chat with Matt Mullenweg. I’m embarrassed to say I ...

What on the Internet isn’t burgeoning or spreading like wild fire, especially if it’s something that lets Web warriors express themselves? Blog resuscitation
2007-07-20 17:04:00
I’m very pleased with myself right now. For one, I’ve been able to force myself to revive a dying blog of mine, Mission: 6-Pack Abs (http://sixpack.robilloblog.com). For months I’d neglected it (my last post was in late May), and it could’ve gone the way of the dodo, had I not decided to effect a major ...
