Normally, I refrain from pasting forwarded mails on my blog - but not always. This email is one that made me wonder - not so much by the artistic nature of numericals but the person who discovered this magic who must be playing with numbers like people do with words.1 x 8 + 1 = 912 x 8 + 2 = 98123 x 8 + 3 = 9871234 x 8 + 4 = 987612345 x 8 + 5 = 98765123456 x 8 + 6 = 9876541234567 x 8 + 7 = 987654312345678 x 8 + 8 = 98765432123456789 x 8 + 9 = 9876543211 x 9 + 2 = 1112 x 9 + 3 = 111123 x 9 + 4 = 11111234 x 9 + 5 = 1111112345 x 9 + 6 = 111111123456 x 9 + 7 = 11111111234567 x 9 + 8 = 1111111112345678 x 9 + 9 = 111111111123456789 x 9 +10= 11111111119 x 9 + 7 = 8898 x 9 + 6 = 888987 x 9 + 5 = 88889876 x 9 + 4 = 8888898765 x 9 + 3 = 888888987654 x 9 + 2 = 88888889876543 x 9 + 1 = 8888888898765432 x 9 + 0 = 888888888Brilliant, isn't it?And look at this symmetry:1 x 1 = 111 x 11 = 121111 x 111 = 123211111 x 1111 = 123432111111 x 11111 = 123454321111111 x 111111 = 123456543211111111 x 11111...

Adieu Dubai
2007-11-01 06:05:00
I first visited Dubai in 1992. That was via Abu Dhabi. In the very first visit itself, on way from Abu Dhabi airport to the city, I saw Sheikh Zayed driving past me amidst helter- skelter of traffic policeman who were taken by surprise. This was indeed a rare sight as for many people who have stayed lifetime in UAE perhaps never have had a glimpse of Sheikh Zayed except on TV.There is no other city that has changed as dramatically as Dubai in such a short span of time. During early 90?s when I visited from Muscat, I would drive my car in the direction of World Trade Center building. That was the easiest way to reach Dubai without any hassle. Now, this building is dwarfed by all those imposing skyscrapers including world?s tallest structure ?Burj Al Arab? that have lined up on Sheikh Zayed Road. Those were the days when visiting Sharjah via Dubai-Sharjah road, one could see a barren stretch of desert with an exception of motley of fast food joints like KFC, Pizza Hut that stood like ...

Qatar: A small yet rich country
2007-10-25 08:52:00
Over-flying Saudi Arabia, whole of Qatar fitted in my aircraft window but Qatar for one reason or another remained elusive from my business itinerary. With my visit this month, I have now visited all the countries in Middle East and Gulf region.I arrived in Doha by 7am flight from Dubai and left by same day 8pm flight. Day return flight is much cheaper to the one next day. Qatar airways fly six times to Dubai to Qatar. Qatar Airlines have all new aircrafts and all of them from Airbus. This small country will boast 50 plus aircrafts and like Dubai would have dedicated terminal designed for A 380 flying direct to USA and Australia. Qatar is one of the easy countries to make a business visit. UAE resident can secure visa upon arrival and visa is stamped by immigration officer. What I liked about this airport is there is no separate queue for visa and immigration. The only hitch is they accept the money only against credit card. With no money exchange in the vicinity; I wonder what if o...

Sex, Death and Lust
2007-10-13 08:56:00
The germination seed was planted during my communication with Delhi based journalist on the topic of Khushwant Singh. There was a mutual agreement about his easy writing skills and his keen sense of observation that gets reflected in his syndicated column ?With Malice towards One and All?, But his penchant for sex-centric theme made my friend a bit sceptical of his senile behaviour. Just a week before, I had seen a Video by Prof Randy Pausch , a Carnegie Mellon University computer-science professor, on last lecture series, wherein the professor goes on to describing his life being aware that his living days on this planet are numbered. These two subjects ?SEX? and ?DEATH? played on mind to bring another fascinating subject of ?LUST?. I started day dreaming about possible association of ?cradle to grave ?and ?sex to death?. Sex and Death are most esoteric, weird topics that bring excitement to me but they do come with a fair degree of trepidation. I relate Sex to a Creation while Dea...

Thecha - where were you all these days ?
2007-10-12 08:57:00
There is a Al Adeel grocery supermarket in Karama district of Dubai that sells practically every food item of regional ethnic Indian cuisine. In this shop, I came across many items that I was never aware of and I also saw those Marathi culinary items that I had almost forgotten during my stay abroad. One such item was Thecha ? a staple dish of Marathi farmer?s lunch box. I bought Kolhapuri Thecha ? made by Pravin and marketed by Satara base firm Choradia Food Products. The packaging of this product is very international standard. It tastes yummy and zingy and now is important and essential part of my kitchen experimentation. When I googled ?Thecha?, I came across a Blog that gave recipe with green chilli. The packaged food I have is with red one.Thecha: Marathi chutney made with fresh chilies and garlic.Take about 15 chilies and 4 cloves of garlic, destem the chilies. Heat a skillet and put the chilies and garlic (whole) on it?add abt 3 tbsps of water, cover and let cook for abt 10 mi...

Father's Day
2007-10-10 07:29:00
Today is my Fath er ?s day, not the one designated by Greeting Card Mfrs but October 10th happens to be my Father?s b?day.Somewhere I had read about the changing perception of a son towards his father as he grows up. In initial years, a son looks at his father in admiration wondering how his dad knows everything in the world. I would also get surprised how my father would know the meaning of any word that I didn?t know. How effortlessly he could answer anything and everything from Biology to Space science. Then comes a teenage phase of son's life, during which Son becomes critical of his Father?s actions questioning the relevance of his knowledge and skills in the contemporary world. I too questioned my father?s display of 'anger and frustration' towards those who were at receiving end from the relatively stronger slice of the society, I doubted his courage in giving ultra high respect while talking to his superiors, I questioned his wisdom of ?Passion for timely and regular attend...

Revealing Van Gogh
2007-09-30 08:54:00
?Lust for Life? a book by Irving Stone on Vincent Van Gogh changed the way I looked at paintings and creative art. This book came in my life in 1999. Now when I look back to all my trips to France and Netherlands prior to 99, I do feel tinge of regret of not knowing Van Gogh then. Van Gogh lived for just 37 years and in last ten years he produced 900 paintings and 1110 drawings. But his last two years of work netted him more recognition and fortune than all his life. For anyone who is passionate about Van Gogh and his work, life of his last two years is fascinating aspect of his life. Most of the Van Gogh ? as a person behind great masterpieces - got revealed through hundreds of his letters that he wrote to his brother Theo, Sister Wilhem and mother. A recent public display of his letters to his 15 year junior friend- Émile Bernard- displayed his hitherto unknown facet of his personality along with his penchant and passion for colors. These letters also tells us how much crucial Arl...

Pancham's final Journey.
2007-09-18 11:55:00
Lee Iacocca in his autobiography mentioned that he was lucky to have been born in USA and also being born at this period of USA. I feel, we all are lucky to have Pancham been born in India but we would have been more fortunate if he were to arrive two decades later - when fruits of digital music and globalization is making Indian talent shine on the world horizon. Pancham with A R Rahman would have ruled music scene globally.I cant imagine how FM's in India would have commercially survived without Pancham. Today most popular remix are churned out of Pancham's old melodies of 70's and 80's and they co-exist with original songs enchanting almost four generations. His ever presence melodies on FM makes us feel that he is very much part of us. Only when we see the above video, realization hit us that he is no more .travelogue, descriptions, experiences, obse rvations from curious and imbecile mind of goggly

Ganesha, Ram and India
2007-09-17 04:47:00
What would be the three most popular personalities that have been drawn, painted and sculpted in the history of the world? The answer perhaps would be Jesus Christ, Gautama Buddha and Ganesha . But if I were to narrow down the choices, the race could be between Jesus and Ganesha. Religion statistics of Christianity population with 2.1 billion with Hinduism at 900M and Buddhism 375M would make Lord Jesus outscore Ganesha by his presence in billion Christian homes, numerous churches spread throughout Europe and Latin America and also Paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance period. But in recent years, popularity and appeal of Lord Ganesha too has soared and it?s amazing to see his diverse forms being presented in innovative manner by artists? world over.Asha Sasi has nicely associated Ganesha?s physical attributes to our social and moral behavior. She says ?In spite of being an elephant, he is so light that he can travel on a mouse. We all become so heavy, because of our ego, pri...

Story of Sholay
2007-09-09 06:27:00
These days, most movies partner with TV channel and project it as media partner. TV channel in turn is genrous with air time in creating an upbeat mood towards a movie to draw people to movie theater. So far so good ! But recently I see a change in the approcah of different TV channels. Those channels who are not in partner with the project go all out to in projecting this movie as flop and sabotage its chances of survival. I was surprised to see one channel projecting Ramu Ki Aag movie as an utter trash and to prove that it created special program on 'Making of Sholay '. I didnt like their approach but enjoyed the narrating the trivia that went behind in making one of the meomeorable epic saga in hindi movie history. Today, one of the pancham bhakt gave this link from BBC Asian Network celebrating Sholay's 30th anniversary. Its enjoyable listening to Ramesh Sippy on making Sholay, Music and Dharmendra's interview. You can click Story Of Sholaytravelogue, descriptions, experiences ,...

Get this widget Share Track details In my teenage years , Guitar was the symbol of liberation and youth and it very much remained till I finished my college. Attractive shapes, colors and variations made this instrument looked sleek to most of other modern instruments. In those days, in commercial orchestra team, Guitar player took a prominent place along with saxophone, accordion and drums. I never got a chance to play around Guitar but always made it a point to touch this instrument whenever I walked in to any music shop. During Mount Mary fair, in the bylanes of Bandra west, I would stop outside the home of christian families when I would hear strings of Guitar. Listening to Brijbhushan Kabra in ?Call of the valley? brought the beauty of Guitar as an instrument that can bring finer nuances of Indian classical Raga. But with growing years, impact of Guitar got diminished with other string instruments like Sitar, Sarod quenching the thirst of musical ears. With Bruce Springsteen ...

Gulf news introduced me to Hanumantha and reading his story, I immediately developed liking and respect towards him.Today, Hanumantha is sick, in fact very sick. He is 75 and feels he has only few months left to live. He is keen to go back to his country and die. Since 1997, he has been in UAE and been to his home town in Andhra Pradesh just once ? that too when UAE Govt. offered amnesty for illegal residents. He came back as domestic helper but since last few years found himself on street after the death of his master. With loss of job, he had to vacate his shared accommodation and soon take solace in public garden. Deteriorating health, lack of food made him go from place to place till he slumped back on a pavement in Sharjah. Seeing him weeping, a passerby stopped. A good Samaritan he must be. He brought Hanumantha to Indian association who with the help of volunteers arranged for necessary money for his journey back. Luckily for Hanumantha, another amnesty scheme is already on a...

The Top 20 Reasons Not to Move to Dubai by Tia O?neill
2007-08-31 10:23:00
I read this article written by Ms Tia O?neill on www.reddit.com. I think this site is a compiler of articles from elsewhere. Being a resident of Dubai over five years, I read these points very carefully and I must admit that they are relevant and objective. Its no surprise, that this article received more than 400 comments within space of 8 hours. Quote :Living in Dubai is not wonderful and glamorous, as many would have you believe. Forget about what you?ve read, seen, and heard; those shiny buildings and manmade islands are all just smoke and mirrors. There are so many things wrong with this place that I have decided to compile a list, a must read if you are considering a potential move to Dubai. 1. There is no standard address system making mail-to-the door delivery impossible. In fact, it makes anything nearly impossible. The taxi driver, here for only two days, and having learned English from old Beatles albums has no clue where your house is. He won?t tell you that of cour...
