India's quest towards modernity
2007-08-30 18:08:00 JRD Tata was always optimistic about India ?s future. Jack Welsch too had been upbeat on India?s progress. He felt infrastructure in India is the only bottleneck hindering India?s progress but this can be tackled by Indian bureaucrats. Richard Gere in his recent interview said ?India is on roll and if the momentum is maintained, India could well be a world power within 200 years?. 200 years ?? I thought it is far too long. Japan had shown country can be transformed in a span of 30 years. China went even further; they changed the economic scenario within 15 years but they are still far away from uniform wealth distribution across the country. For me, India is placed in precarious position that is very unique. At 8% plus p.a. economic growth, India offers attractive market for many commodities but I feel its being pulled by two opposite forces? one by quest for modernity by educated and vibrant youth and other by deep rooted concepts of antiquated socialist ideas. Chances are that it m... More About: Real Estate , Quest , Modernity

Nine Day in Japan - Osaka, Kyoto, Kanazawa, Odate, Tokyo
2007-08-06 15:15:00 ?What do you think of India and how is it different from Japan ? ?. An innocuous question by my Indian colleague to Japanese appeared to have flummoxed him so much that it took him more than six hours to muster the strength to say it ? First ? Cleanliness, Second : Car Honking and Third : Punctuality ?; For me, it was all summed up as ? Public Behaviour?. The comments may have been in jest but conveyed the truth. For an Indian and that includes me, there is no way but to concede to his argument. I wish one day, one small part of India will defy his statement making it punctual, disciplined city free from any pollution be it noise, water or air. This was another visit to Japan within a span of one year but this visit was different from previous one and few others before that. As my Kansai airport bus entered Hankyoo terminal in Osaka downtown, I could see few men on a make shift podium next to Yodobashi electronic stores, screaming on microphone with motley of crowd listening to him. Pamela to Sarvepalli - biographies by descendents and my thoughts
2007-07-21 13:41:00 While reading a review of a book ?India remembered? by Pamela Mountbatten, my thoughts went back to a news report that I had read long ago in Marathi Newspaper. This was about Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Ex President of India ? a brilliant scholar, profound teacher and academician India has produced. I had read about Dr. Radhakrishnan not being in contact with his mother as a punishment of his disapproval of her moral behavior. I tried to verify this from a biography written by his son. Amazon does have this book listed but without any excerpts and there is only one review written by Sriniwas. However during my digging efforts, I came across a biographical sketch written by Antony Copley that fueled my speculations further. It says ?officially he was the second son of middle-class poor parents, Sarvepalli Veeraswami, a minor revenue official, and his wife, Sitamma. At least, this is the official version. More probably, he was the illegitimate son of a visiting Vaishnavite official... More About: My Thoughts , Thoughts , Biographies , Graph
Who do you marry ?
2007-07-15 13:31:00 A decision paramount to most people in their life time . A lot of possibilities gets thrown at this question. Marry someone you love, Marry with whom you are friend with, Marry with whom you share philosophy or Marry someone who is tuned with your cultural and work ethos.David LeVine, the director of Warm Wisdom Press, says. Never get married because you?re in love. This may sound crazy and weird but I tend to agree with his views. If we look at our own life, we can observe how many times we have been in love . Timespan of love endurance may be different but every time, we were in love ? it was intense, pure and genuine? at that moment of time. But what we termed ?love? then, it wasn?t love today. Was it attraction, infatuation or sheer physical liking ? all depended on the state of mind prevailing then.David says, ?Chemistry ignites the fire, but character keeps it burning. Chemistry ? physical attraction ? is not something to be ignored. But a deeply loving relationship based on...
Move over hyped Taj Mahal, for me its Kailasa of Elora
2007-07-12 09:23:00 Indian media is generally obsessed by Bollywood, Cricket and Personalities. What did Amitabh Bacchan do today? Has Azim Premji or S K Mittal figured in top 100 billionaires or if Sania Mirza slipped in her ATC ranking. It was respite to see the absence of Sachin Tendulkar?s on TV screen but soon this was replaced by hundreds of hours projecting Taj Mahal as a strong candidate for seven wonders.Taj Mahal won the race not because Indian media hyped it but the process itself was skewed in her favour. When you have selection based on people voting on Internet, India with a million plus net population has an unfair advantage and also was with China, Brazil etc. So when Taj Mahal made it, I wasn?t as much elated with Taj being selected as I was disappointed by Angkor Wat of not being chosen. Those people we have seen both Angkor Wat and Taj Mahal perhaps agree with my feelings. Why Indians are so passionate about Taj Mahal? Does it represent India? It was built by Mughal invaders borrowi... More About: Move , Elora , Kail

Melting Entrepreneurs of India
2007-07-02 12:02:00 There is a shortage of 1 Rupee coin in India , particularly in the eastern part of India. All this is because of great business opportunity to export shaving blades to a neighbouring country. In Bangladesh, sales realization of a shaving blade is Rupee 3-4 per piece. Innovative entrepreneurs in Kolkatta, melt 1 rupee coin, make shaving blade and export to Bangladesh. Poor Government of India, it cost them more than 1 Rupee to make 1 Rupee coinThere is another product marketing situation where Govt of India is at the receiving end. And that product is Condom. Population of India is a billion but it also has nearly 6 million people afflicted with HIV and that?s why Govt of India to control ballooning population of India and restrict spread of HIV provides nearly 900 million free condoms. But most are usurped by entrepreneurs for variety of profit making product applications than it was intended for. Smart innovative Indian entrepreneurs have made availability of condom into a free avai... More About: Entrepreneurs , Rene
Cathedral of La Sagrada Familia ? 120 years of on going unfinished projec
2007-06-30 20:41:00 We were travelling from Forum (conference centre) back to hotel in Yellow Black metered Barcelona taxi. When taxi stopped at one of the traffic signals, my boss who was sitting with me at the back seat, asked me to look out from a window. I could see part of dark brown coloured minaret jutting out in between two apartments. I dismissed it as one of the possible mosques that may have been existed during Arab occupation of Spain. Between two Japanese, I could make out some conversation with the name Gaudi but didn?t pay much attention. After reaching our hotel, my colleague and I decided to use few hours seeing places in Barcelona. He was keen on Joan Miro and Antonio Gaudi ? both names I was unaware. Joan Miro ? gallery and park- was closed being Sunday, we decided to visit Church of Gaudi. I was little perplexed with the comment of hotel receptionist that that it could take several hours to see this church. I couldn?t imagine how a church could consume so much time. Would it be bi... Barcelona - A nice city indeed
2007-06-28 07:10:00 Normally first 24 hours to any new city are not always pleasant. Unknown foreign environment, suspicious over eager sellers, lack of familiar company and so on. Barcelona is one of the few cities that I enjoyed in my first 24 hours and this enjoyment remained for next 5 days.Alighting from the old Alitalia MD aircraft, Barcelona airport greeted passengers with parallel red and green lines pasted on chipped Italian tiles directing towards luggage collection. But suddenly, both colours went in opposite direction making all foreigners confused. Young girl at the reception couldn?t speak English but she came along the green line to show non Spanish speaking visitors the gate towards luggage collection. That?s where Spain differs from France. Both countries get a lot of foreign visitors but France let you know that you are a foreigner and unwelcome if you don?t know French. In Barcelona, not many know English yet they welcome you with smile and friendly demeanour. No wonder Spain is th... More About: City , Nice

Raipur - A city that came on Medical Map of India
2007-06-11 19:46:00 In early 80?s I visited Raipur few times while being on business visit to Bhilai. I also did visit Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Medical college to make some sales calls. But seeing the condition of the hospital, I felt it was better to relax in a hotel and have dinner at Girnar restaurant that served fine India n food. After seeing the infrastructure conditions of this city, it was clear that Raipur got a raw deal compared to other cities in Madhya Pradesh such as Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior. During the course of time, I did know about a new state Chattisgarh that came into existence out of MP but forgot about Raipur that became capital of this new state. On May 29th 2007, NDTV covered the news of ?separation of surgery of 10 month old conjoined twins ? Ram and Laxman ?. What surprised and stunned me that this surgery was to be performed in Raipur at Ambedkar Government Hospital. Suddenly images of cream coloured barren walls , open wooden benches and laboratory with worn out yellow stained gl... More About: City
Saudi Arabia ? relaxing the grip
2007-06-09 09:23:00 Kingdom Tower : RiyadhFour year ago : As soon as plane does a touchdown at Riyadh , ladies rush for their abaya (A loose, usually black robe worn, covering the body from head to toe and worn with a headscarf and veil )to cover themselves up.Two years ago: Ladies walk out of the aircraft clad in normal attire, but while standing in immigration queue, take out Abaya and start wearing it before they arrive at immigration desk. Now: They hardly bother about Abaya; go through immigration, baggage screening and customs. But as soon as they are out of the airport, they are in their ubiquitous black attire. My four day trip to Riyadh, gave me this changing impression of Saudi Arabia .Albeit at snail?s place, Saudi regime is slowly relaxing their formidable Islamic grip on the society. No more customs officials ransack bags; tear the parcels, insist on switching on laptops to look for symbols that would connote Islamic blasphemy. Immigration clerk too are relaxed. Bags go through X ray machine... More About: Saudi Arabia , Grip , Relaxing , Relax

Roz Roz Ankhon Tale
2007-05-16 19:40:00 Being group member of ?Gulzar Fan Yahoo Group?, helps me understand the essence of poetry of Gulzar that is understood by all his admirers worldwide.I sometimes wonder if RD kept his best musical genius for Gulzar or Gulzar kept his best poetry for RD Burman . But this duo with the help of Asha have created some of the memorable poetic musical embellishments. One such song is Roz Roz Ankhon Tale ?. Hardly anyone would remember this movie Jeeva ? picturised on Sanjay Dutt and Mandakini. But this is one of my favourite songs on all three counts ? lyrics, music and rendition. RD has adroitly covered Amit Kumar?s limitation of clasical base while extracting the very best from Asha.Silbil has translated this song in Engligh. I admire his attempt. I too tried with my novice skills . Its not easy to translate a poetry in a foreign language. Appropriate words often fail to reflect and retain the theme and essence of poetry in original language. Moreoever each language has its own nuances tha...

Dad after 40
2007-05-11 07:46:00 Having a baby in Mid 40?s is not for faint hearted guys. Perhaps, that?s what my friend Subba Iyer may have meant when he said ?it?s bold and courageous decision ?. As I look back at my decision that took few years to crystallize and fructify, it now dawns upon me that I am not alone in this ?so called? bold move. There seem to be distinct trend toward older dads. For men 40 to 44 years old, the number of live baby births per 1,000 men increased from 17.1 to 23.4. For men 45 to 49, the number of births increased from 6.1 to 7.6. For men 50 to 54 years, the number increased from 2.2 to 2.5. The only category where there wasn't an increase was men 55 and older that have the same: 0.3 births per 1,000 men.Have the figures become skewed after celebrities set up this trend of becoming dad at older age? Tony Blair (at 45), Ken Livingstone (57), Mick Jagger (57), Phil Collins (51), Rupert Murdoch (72), Michael Douglas (58), Gordon Brown (54), Rod Stewart (60), Paul McCartney (61), Eric C... castle kyalami
2007-05-01 10:32:00 My eardrums have a dull ache with humming noise, my clean shaven head?s pores are topped with early morning dew droplets. In a crisp and cool breezy morning, I have just had a walk outside sprawling garden of Hotel Cast le Kyalami. By 8am, I was ready and was heading for breakfast. When asked for the direction, guy at the reception seemed a bit shell shocked but did point me towards an empty hall with a polite request ?we serve breakfast only from 630am?. I immediately realized my folly of not having set the clock behind 2 hours. My instant reaction was not to portray any surprise. ?No problem, I shall have a walk? I said. I walked out without any sweater or warm clothes, sky was still grey but horizon was enfolding a tinge of pink and birds were ready to leave their nest. White, Yellow roses were fully bloomed with other flowers in scarlet and orange laid a colourful spread over green top . From the top of Castle Kyalami, I could see suburbs of Midrand, Sandton twinkled lights.Castl...
Wicked Wicket Words
2007-04-29 14:04:00 I was in J?burg when Australia took on their arch rival Australia in semi final world cup. I had planned to be part of boisterous crowd in a sports pub but when I heard the scorecard 25 for 5, I decided against it. Had South Africa started well, I am sure I would have had enough dose of jabs, digs of verbal warfare from South African every time ball would hit by Protease batsman. In Sydney bars, it would have been far more caustic. This week, i saw a blog www.positivesharing.com - a blog dedicated to happiness in working life. Author, Alexander Kjerulf, writes and consults on happiness at work and has wonderfully scripted all the aspects about happiness in a workpalce. I agree when he says ' loving what you do is just that damn important! '. He mentions 10 most important reasons why happiness at work is the hallmark of the productivity at work place .1. Happy people work better with others. Happy people are a lot more fun to be around and consequently have better relations at work.
