Tolo Chinna Bina ....sweet song indeed
2008-03-19 05:11:00
TOLO CHINNA BINA.m...Hosted by eSnipsThere are songs that make us happy when we are morose and there are some that make is subdued when we are high. However, some songs make us feel nice, happy no matter what the situation is. Tolo Chinno Bina - a Bengali song from Ekanto Apun would come in this category. I discovered this song from the blog of Bishwanath and ever since, i am in love with the tune. Amazing RD with his fabulous repertoire of musical jewels and one such jewel is Tolo Chinna Bina.I was very keen to get the lyrics for this song but I could not get it on google. I must persist with my Bengali friends to get these and also English translation. Until then, I shall keep playing this song on my PC and feel elated. Thanks to Atish,I got the lyricsTolo chhinno beena, bandho notun taare,Bhore nao shur gao jiboner-i joyogaanAagami diner aalo, du chokhe mekhe nao,Aandhar ghuchiye dao bholo abhimanJotoi boro hok raatri kaalo,Jaanbe totoi kaachhe bhorero aaloJodi ekla pothhe kono s...

Happy Birthday Akshta
2008-03-16 02:49:00
Do we meet people by chance or is it preordained destiny? I am not sure but I would tend to agree with later. Else, how would we be all set to celebrate Akshta's b'day at ISKON temple in Singapore. It was Sunday evening at Orchard road in Singapore. We were sitting on a bench facing Metro - a departmental store that hangs reproductions of Maunet, Van Gogh in corridor leading to its toilet. Orchard Place was buzzing with travelers and tourists. Shoppers and sellers both frenzied by weekend transactions. Neon lights of elite brands reflecting on tiled footpath. And amidst all that - three bright youngsters - in saffron robe playing Hare Rama Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare. It didn?t take long for Akshta to start clapping her tiny palms, and tapping her feet to the chant. Most people around were amused by her trance except perhaps a young teenagers next to our bench who were in their own trance of hugging and kissing. I am sure, seeing a toddler engrossed in their chant, must h...

Jakarta, Rains and Singapore Airlines

Little dots of green and brown in the middle of surfing waves was the first glimpse of Indonesia?s many islands as my plane pierced through the clouds. I always take a window seat whenever it?s a day journey or if it's my first visit to the country. So was this time. I was visiting Indonesia first time. As I approached Jakarta , I could also see many rectangular shaped string of wooden sticks stuck in the water. Were these fishing nets? My curiosity of deciphering them without success may have made my nose tip flat by pressing hard against the aircraft window but it didn?t deter me to shift my focus to check of any human settlement on these little islands. Most of them did not show except an occasional house perched amidst banana and coconut trees. I wondered the economic feasibility of providing electricity, food to these 17,000 islands. No wonder only 6,000 are inhabited. Can Indonesia not consider making money by selling these islands to rich people of the west? My wild thought...

Singapore v/s Dubai - My Initial Impressions
2008-02-27 07:49:00
?What can we do together?? An initial remark by Sheikh Mohammed ? ruler of Dubai during his meeting with senior minister of Singapore summed up the extent to which Dubai?s aspiration of emulating Singapore have come true. Dubai in a short span of time is galloping fast to catch up with Singapore or may even surpass it.In recent issue, TIME magazine compared New York, London and Hong Kong on various benchmarks and found all three cities have remarkable character resemblance. Being an expatriate in Dubai and Singapore I would love to compare both cities that have a lot in common and yet are strikingly different. However my involvement with Dubai is much longer to Singapore and hence ?initial impressions? would be more appropriate while comparing these two vibrant cities.Singapore is efficient. There is no doubt about it. It is also remarkable that Singapore has made its development uniform and made it accessible to every precinct. No matter where one resides, one has uniform co...

Retirement Means Death or Rejuvenation
2008-01-14 07:31:00
I was influenced by two contrasting opinions on Retirement . One by Lee Kwan Yew and other a response by an American reader of Strait Times, to LKY's proclaimation 'Retirement Means Death '. Lee Kwan Yew is a remarkable person and like many foreigners , I too look at him in awe and respect. However in Asian countries, a section of domestic population is always more critical of their leaders . Singapore too is no exception. Y?day at Suntec Convention center, when Lew Kwan Yew talked about Retirement. ?With nothing to do, no purpose in life, you'll just degrade, go to seed '. No sooner he proclaimed ' Retirement Means Death', scores of messages started pouring in the local newspaper - Strait Times. Majority of them were critical of him and his views. What LKW said was echoed a while ago in British Medical Journal. The study mentioned that those people who retire at age 55 and live to be at least 65 die sooner than people who retire at 65. That's not all. People who retire at 5...

Being Hindu in Pakistan and Muslim in India
2008-01-02 04:09:00
During one of my train journeys in North India , I came across a person in the first class coupe of Indian railways. He worked for nationalized bank and was on his way from work place to home. He was wearing half sleeve checked shirt and baggy trousers with neatly combed hair, wearing spectacle and carrying local newspaper. He was Indian middle aged common man with a small , stable family and a secure job. I was prepared for an insipid chat on mundane subjects about bureaucracy, ministerial intervention etc but he took me by surprise by telling me about his visit was to shift his family from New Delhi to his newly acquired residence in Meerut. This intrigued me as I was seeing for the first time a migration from a metro city to a small town. But once I understood his reasons for doing so, my intrigue was transformed into a rankled thought that has stayed with me since then. The above incident happened post Godhra and Hindu Muslim riots that ensued immediately after. This gentleman had...

Thoughts about Benazir Bhutto
2007-12-29 07:04:00
I don?t remember if it was from her autobiography or from her syndicated column that I learnt about the behind the scene activities of ?Shimla agreement? that was signed after India -Pakistan 1971 war. Benazir must have been 26 then when she accompanied her father Zulfikar Ali Bhutto for the summit talks with Indira Gandhi. Benazir wonderfully portrayed the defeated mindset of Pakistani rulers whose pride was brutally wounded after their defeat in war and partition of their country. I think the opportunity to be present at the Shimla Pact must have been the moment for Benazir?s baptism into Pakistani politics. In 1993, I saw Benazir?s mother at hotel Intercon in Abu Dhabi. She was tall, fair and it seemed she bestowed her physical traits to Benazir. I do not know if she is still alive or not, but if she is- this must be the most cruel moment for her. Her husband was hanged, her one son ? Murtuza was murdered in Cannes, second son ? Shahanwaz ambushed and killed by Pakistani forces a...

Adieu Dubai

I first visited Dubai in 1992. That was via Abu Dhabi. In the very first visit itself, on way from Abu Dhabi airport to the city, I saw Sheikh Zayed driving past me amidst helter- skelter of traffic policeman who were taken by surprise. This was indeed a rare sight as for many people who have stayed lifetime in UAE perhaps never have had a glimpse of Sheikh Zayed except on TV.There is no other city that has changed as dramatically as Dubai in such a short span of time. During early 90?s when I visited from Muscat, I would drive my car in the direction of World Trade Center building. That was the easiest way to reach Dubai without any hassle. Now, this building is dwarfed by all those imposing skyscrapers including world?s tallest structure ?Burj Al Arab? that have lined up on Sheikh Zayed Road. Those were the days when visiting Sharjah via Dubai-Sharjah road, one could see a barren stretch of desert with an exception of motley of fast food joints like KFC, Pizza Hut that stood like ...

Qatar: A small yet rich country
2007-10-25 08:52:00
Over-flying Saudi Arabia, whole of Qatar fitted in my aircraft window but Qatar for one reason or another remained elusive from my business itinerary. With my visit this month, I have now visited all the countries in Middle East and Gulf region.I arrived in Doha by 7am flight from Dubai and left by same day 8pm flight. Day return flight is much cheaper to the one next day. Qatar airways fly six times to Dubai to Qatar. Qatar Airlines have all new aircrafts and all of them from Airbus. This small country will boast 50 plus aircrafts and like Dubai would have dedicated terminal designed for A 380 flying direct to USA and Australia. Qatar is one of the easy countries to make a business visit. UAE resident can secure visa upon arrival and visa is stamped by immigration officer. What I liked about this airport is there is no separate queue for visa and immigration. The only hitch is they accept the money only against credit card. With no money exchange in the vicinity; I wonder what if o...

Sex, Death and Lust
2007-10-13 08:56:00
The germination seed was planted during my communication with Delhi based journalist on the topic of Khushwant Singh. There was a mutual agreement about his easy writing skills and his keen sense of observation that gets reflected in his syndicated column ?With Malice towards One and All?, But his penchant for sex-centric theme made my friend a bit sceptical of his senile behaviour. Just a week before, I had seen a Video by Prof Randy Pausch , a Carnegie Mellon University computer-science professor, on last lecture series, wherein the professor goes on to describing his life being aware that his living days on this planet are numbered. These two subjects ?SEX? and ?DEATH? played on mind to bring another fascinating subject of ?LUST?. I started day dreaming about possible association of ?cradle to grave ?and ?sex to death?. Sex and Death are most esoteric, weird topics that bring excitement to me but they do come with a fair degree of trepidation. I relate Sex to a Creation while Dea...

Thecha - where were you all these days ?

There is a Al Adeel grocery supermarket in Karama district of Dubai that sells practically every food item of regional ethnic Indian cuisine. In this shop, I came across many items that I was never aware of and I also saw those Marathi culinary items that I had almost forgotten during my stay abroad. One such item was Thecha ? a staple dish of Marathi farmer?s lunch box. I bought Kolhapuri Thecha ? made by Pravin and marketed by Satara base firm Choradia Food Products. The packaging of this product is very international standard. It tastes yummy and zingy and now is important and essential part of my kitchen experimentation. When I googled ?Thecha?, I came across a Blog that gave recipe with green chilli. The packaged food I have is with red one.Thecha: Marathi chutney made with fresh chilies and garlic.Take about 15 chilies and 4 cloves of garlic, destem the chilies. Heat a skillet and put the chilies and garlic (whole) on it?add abt 3 tbsps of water, cover and let cook for abt 10 mi...

Father's Day
2007-10-10 07:29:00
Today is my Father ?s day, not the one designated by Greeting Card Mfrs but October 10th happens to be my Father?s b?day.Somewhere I had read about the changing perception of a son towards his father as he grows up. In initial years, a son looks at his father in admiration wondering how his dad knows everything in the world. I would also get surprised how my father would know the meaning of any word that I didn?t know. How effortlessly he could answer anything and everything from Biology to Space science. Then comes a teenage phase of son's life, during which Son becomes critical of his Father?s actions questioning the relevance of his knowledge and skills in the contemporary world. I too questioned my father?s display of 'anger and frustration' towards those who were at receiving end from the relatively stronger slice of the society, I doubted his courage in giving ultra high respect while talking to his superiors, I questioned his wisdom of ?Passion for timely and regular attend...
