crow : undisputed king of mumbai sky
2007-02-17 17:28:08 After ages, I spotted one sparrow at my home in Bandra. My immediate fear was ?I hope she doesn?t get noticed by any crow?. Last month, with little sparrow in his beak, I saw him on the balcony grill, spreading his span, struggling to fit himself on the frill of the balcony, Seeing the feast in sight, few more of his buddies struggled to get their share. He somehow managed to fled and perch on the tree. With sheer struggle, exhaustion and fear I am sure sparrow must have been still by now. Another casualty to ever dwindling population of sparrows in Mumbai suburbs. When I grew up in Kala Nagar in mid 70?s, coconut trees were just planted and one could see sky horizon up to Kalina from the terrace. Artek Apartments was the tallest building in Bandra East and perhaps the only one with Elevator. At breakfast time, sight of flying green parrots was not unusual. Pigeons would produce babies between narrow spaces in earthen tree pots kept in the balcony. Now slowly all other bird species ar... More About: Crow , King , Dispute
National Shame or Call to Honor?
2007-02-13 17:24:02 I arrived in Entebbe ?Uganda from Khartoum via Nairobi. As my hotel minivan rolled out of Entebbe airport on way to Kampala, Uganda, images of Israel?s daring rescue operation of hijacked Air France plane on June 3rd 1976 flashed my mind. But soon, Kandahar incident of dec 24th 1999 stood like a blot against this courageous and brave commando operation.Somehow most ?singh? that occupied India?s post independence ministerial posts have been great disappointments. Tradition continued with Charan Singh, Arjun Singh, V.P Singh and Jaswant Singh. All these Singhs came with great fanfare and showed lot of charisma and rekindled hope only to leave behind them traces divided society. But Jaswant Singh went further by demonstrating an act that perhaps has no parallel in public behavior. I don?t know much about Jaswant Singh but his appearance gives an impression of being aristocratic background. I have thirsts
2007-02-13 17:24:02 I read this poem somewhere.... i liked it so much that i saved it in my pc... i dont remember the poet but I wish I had written his/her name...I have thirsts.Thirst s for the unknown, experiences, new, the wild, out of my reach.......If you know how to dance, show me your lead.If you know how to play an instrument, perform for me.If you have swirling images of poetry and unbound words, regale mewith them.If you have climbed, jumped, or explored the vast expanse of the world, whisper about the sights to me.Touched foreign sands?Breathed exotic spices?Describe them to me and I will forever appreciate this.......this quenching of my thirsts my passions, my desires......it is beyond all of this.......it makes me soar. For it is the thirst for knowledge and the unknown that keeps me aliveand when the search stops......then so does my heart.travelogue, descriptions, experiences ,observations from curious and imbecile mind of goggly More About: Have
But Why Mommy ?
2007-02-13 17:24:02 When I grew up, I was never given a choice or permission to ask Why. The word ?why? was considered as an act of impudence, challenge to the authority. This practise continued from home, school and slowly it has imbued in my system to accept whatever has been told by elders and teachers to be the absolute fact and the truth. Now the world has changed, George Bush policy of advocating democraracy and freedom of speech may or may not reach Arab world, but it is seeping through young generation of Indians and they have started asking ? But why mommy? without any inhibition. I am sure today's parents and teachers must be grappling with answers that can satiate childrens curiosity of ?why?.Indians living out of India, carried the essence of Indian spirit, culture and tradition and ensure that this has transcended through generations. http://hindumommy.wordpress.com/ is one such blog that neatly compiles answers to many ?why? for some of questions pertaining to Hindu rituals. boss
2007-02-13 17:24:02 A junior manager, a senior manager and their boss are on their way to a meeting. On their way through a park, they come across a wonder lamp. They rub the lamp and a ghost appears. The ghost says, "Normally, one is granted three wishes but as you are three, I will allow one wish each"So the eager senior manager shouted, I want the first wish. I want to be in the Bahamas, on a fast boat and have no worries. "Pfufffff, and he was gone. Now the junior manager could not keep quiet and shouted "I want to be in Florida with beautiful girls, plenty of food and cocktails. Traffic and Bribe
2007-02-13 17:24:02 Around the same week, when President A P J Abdul Kalam was inaugurating a two-day conference of senior officials and heads of anti corruption wings , I was witnessing traffic policemen collecting his ?hafta? (share of bribe!) at the traffic signal opposite President Kalam?s official residence. This traffic signal stands at cross roads of Vijay Path (a road the leads from Presidents? palace to India Gate) and road that lead to Parliament. This is no ordinary traffic signal or pole but a singular small light that it put on the top on the dome of the permanent stand kept in the middle of this large intersection. This funny, obscure signal light is known only to regular delhites but those who are visitors to Delhi become a victim of the traffic violation. On weekday, visitor is protected by cars ahead that stop seeing the signal but on weekend or holiday, the place is barren- visitors come to see the grandeur of President Palace, Vijay Path and India Gate. Brabourn Stadium
2007-02-13 17:24:02 Seeing Brabourn stadium in Champions trophy brought memories of my early days of seeing live cricket matches. My first experience was Mumbai v/s Baroda. Mumbai team had Ajit Wadekar, Dilip Sardesai, Ajit Pai, Saeed Hathia. On that day, Baroda opted to bat and Vijay Bhosle scored a century. My second match was West Zone v/s South Zone Duleep trophy final. West Zone started with Niranjan Shah, Madhu Gupte followed by Ajit Wadekar, Dilip Sardesai, Vijay Bhosle, Ashok Mankad, Ajit Pai. South had Jayantilal, Govindraj, Krishnamurthi etc. Ajit Wadekar would get the rousing welcome he would enter to bat one down. In later years, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandip Patil and Sachin Tendulkar got similar applause. I remember a catch of the bowling of Govindraj. Second slip fielder dived and scooped the ball up, first slip fielder lifted it up and the ball was caught by the wicketkeeper. Kulkarni brothers ? My Life Companion
2007-02-13 17:24:02 My father had bought this in 1964 at Indian Rupee 4.00 (10 cents). Printed in Great Britain, this ?The Little Oxford Dictionary compiled by George Ostler is still is intact with her brown cover bind that has inner liner in the form of surgical dressing. The thread ? almost like suture - that holds the pages has still not given up. This little dictionary has been my companion from early English learning days and still with me next to my worktable. There used to another Marathi ? English ? Marathi dictionary ? I think by Veerkar. It was bulky greyish green coloured one that reminded me of baby elephant. This baby elephant helped me in my Marathi school days. Stellenbosch ? Cape Town?s wine heritage
2007-02-13 17:24:02 In my first visit to Cape Town , I was tied down to the downtown with a distant view of Table Mountain. Naturally, when I saw expansive terrain of Johannesburg ? I was little generous in elevating this city over Cape Town ? much to the chagrin of South Africans. This time, I stayed at the Somerset west - the country side of the Cape Town ? and toured along the vineyards at Stellenbosch, had dinner in African settings at Moyo.I was quick to realize my earlier folly. First Impression is definitely not the lasting impression; Cape Town can match any other spectacular place on Mediterranean. No wonder Europeans who arrived decided to stay put!!!I was being driven along Stellenbosch Wine Routes, one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Western Cape. It has more than 200 wine and grape producers and considered as the second oldest town in South Africa with most winery façade as Cape Dutch buildings. All around Stellenbosch lies in a fertile green valley surrounded by vineyards,... More About: Heritage , Elle
Being with Peacock
2007-02-13 17:24:02 India had just completed their innings against Australia in the Champions trophy. I watched it in my hotel resort ?Straightway Head? at Somerset west in Cape Town. It was lunch time and I decided to have a bite in an open area outside the restaurant facing lush green gardens of the resort. The next table family party was getting over and I was all by myself reading about Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Garden route while basking in the sun on a cool day. As I finished my Mushroom soup and started with vegetable sandwiches, unexpected companion arrived. Beautiful iridescent blue-green coloured highly elongated plumage ? tail ? captivated me as he squezzed between wrough iron chairs. I had never seen peacock so close but I wasn?t sure if I should shoo him away or safeguard myself by pulling up my legs to prevent him coming clsoer. He solved my fear ? he was more shy and more scared than I was. He went behind my chair in an open space and started looking for titbits of food that my pred... More About: With , Bein , Cock , Being

2007-02-13 17:24:02 No matter how frequent one travels, it?s not so easy to ensure that everything is put inside the briefcase. This time, I missed out on my new Sony Digital camera bought at Akihabara, Tokyo. It is surprising that two big Japanese brands don?t work with each other but one from Scandinavian Nokia memory coo coo?s well with Toshiba. I don?t know why these companies can?t declare their compatibility with other devices. 2007-02-13 17:24:02 I am yet to come across a Philippine national- Filipino- who is grumpy, gloomy and cribbing about life. I am not aware the reason behind it ? they are neither affluent nor spiritual ? a common benchmark for happiness. He or she may be it maid, waitress, nurse, salesman, worker, physician or technician ? all of them portray tremendous zeal to savour the life. They enjoy food, drinks, clothes, movies, music and above all chatting. Its rare to see a Filipino sitting quietly in one corner reading a book or complaining about job satisfaction or economic hardship. Very often, they would be seen huddled, chatting ,drinking, laughing and if alone ? humming and singing. They appear to live for TODAY, work to live, NEVER live to work.I felt this could be true with Philippine Expatriates in Middle East ? who are outnumbered by their Asian expatriates. Often minorities cling to ecahother and remain contented but Filipino are the happiest all over including in their own country. But what surpris... More About: Happiness , Ness , Index

Lake Nakuru and Flamingoes
2007-02-13 17:24:02 Sept First week : I arrived in Nairobi on Saturday evening and left to Johannesburg by noon of the following Wednesday. I would have been happy to visit Masai Mara again to meet my friends who are back from Serengeti with their little ones. But with just one free day of Sunday in Nairobi, Masai Mara was ruled out. With 5 hour drive either way, Amboseli national park next to mighty Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain with a game drive to meet lion, cheetah, elephants and hippos was also discounted and so was Mount Longonot and Lake Navisha- highest lake in the rift valley where without the presence of predatory animals, one can have a luxury to walk with herds of Zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, and giraffeSo our choice was narrowed down to Lake Nakuru - one of a chain of 8 lakes, a part of famous Rift Valley that stretch from Ethiopia to Tanzania via Kenya. Johannesburg : Ugly side of HIV and Gun culture
2007-02-13 17:24:02 I never thought that the subjects of higher learning would be taught so early in the life. Laghu Rudra Pooja
2007-02-13 17:24:02 Today, my mother is doing Laghu Rudra Pooja. Ignorant as I am with significance of Hindu philosophy and its rituals, I decided to read about this and stumbled upon the website of http://www.celextel.org/ . Here is excerpt from this siteIntroductionVedas are believed to be birth less and the term originates from the word ?vid? meaning knowledge. Initially, the Vedas were not written down and the composers simply taught them to their disciples along with pronunciation. This was necessary because the language in which it was composed relied upon compound words, which, if pronounced or split differently gave rise to different meanings.Among the oldest books ever composed by Man are the Vedas-the sacred books of Hindus. The word Hindu is the modern term coined by those from foreign land, to denote the followers of Vedas, who preferred to term themselves as those following Sanathana Dharma (literally the birth less and deathless perennial thought process). The great Veda Vyasa is supposed...
Absolute Honesty
2007-02-13 17:24:02 ?I am blunt and straightforward ?. ?I call spade for spade?.We often hear such statements uttered by some with affront and arrogance. It?s a loud proclamation of the truth they espouse in dealing with people. But do such people endear others? Don?t they cause hurt and anguish to the others? On the other side, there are people who are cautious about their verbal expression as if they are handling expensive cut glasses. They hardly take a firm stance on any subject or rather have an opinion before they ascertain the viewpoint of the opposite person and are often in unison with the opposite person. People with such attributes endear people who surround them. But Are they honest? This is one aspect of life that I have always battled with. What is righteous and appropriate? To be honest or To be endearing to others?Should one accept the fact that one is bound to hurt someone sometime? Can I take clear stance and behave with conviction with utter disregard to people how they say and feel?. ?... SALT ? Silent Alarming Longevity Threat

We fear Diabetes, Coronary artery blockages. But we needn?t worry. Medical science is already advanced to offer us a remedy for this and in some cases a reversible cure with products like Artificial Pancreas (Insulin Pump), Lipid Removal drugs and Cardiac Interventional Procedures. But scenario with SALT is different. SALT is what we should be worried about. Our body during whole day doesn?t need more than 5gm of SALT per day and in one helping we stuff our body with excess.Where does this excess SALT go? Can we take it out? When sodium intake exceeds the amount the body... More About: Longevity , Silent , Alarm , Salt , Long

There are three elements that go into helping us achieve our goals: our thoughts, our feelings, and our actions. When we understand the law of attraction and consciously use these tools to attract what we want into our lives. ""The Secret " DVD she strongly recommends is indeed wonderful! It's beautifully done. She is right in commenting that rather than being part of soap serials that portray nothing but negativity , Its better to watch such DVD's that remind us of all the possibilities in life, all the potential that is available to each one of us all the time. Savings is Sin , Spending is Virtue

They do not spend much. Also Japan exports far more than it imports. Has an annual trade surplus of over 100 billions. Yet Japanese economy is considered weak, even collapsing. Americans spend, save little. Also US imports is more than it exports. It has an annual trade deficit of over$400 billion. Yet, the American economy is considered strong and trusted to get stronger. But where from do Americans get money to spend? They borrow from Japan, China and even India.Virt ually others save for the US to spend. Global savings are mostly invested in US, in dollars. India itself keeps its foreign currency assets of over$50 billions in US securities. China has sunk over$160 billion in US securities. Japan's stakes in US securities is in trillions.
