House slams Malaysia over attack on Indonesian referee
2007-08-28 14:46:00 The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has reacted strongly to Malaysia n police attack on Indonesian karate referee Donald Peter Luther Kolopita in the wee hours of Friday last week."This is an arrogant act of the Malaysian police against an Indonesian citizen. The government should lodge a strong protest to the Malaysian government," House Speaker Agung Laksono said Monday. The House Speaker said the Malaysian police action insulted the feeling and dignity of the Indonesian people, much more that the victim who was tortured by the four Malaysian police was already old."Ironically, Malaysia did not explain the chronology of the incident. This is excessive arrogance," Agung Laksono said.He said that the Malaysian attitude humiliated the Indonesian citizen. Malaysia has also done the same thing towards Indonesian workers in that country."Malaysia has repeatedly insulted and humiliated Indonesia. Unlike Australia which immediately gives a clarificiation and asks for ... More About: Slam , Attack
Indonesian woman and her daughter dies of bird flu on Bali island
2007-08-15 03:44:00 The reason of death of the woman, who spends time on Bali resort island, became virus of bird flu. Health officials in Bali have confirmed that a woman and her daughter died there from the deadly H5N1 strain of influenza. If confirmed, it would be the first time the H5N1 bird flu virus had killed in the popular holiday island destination, although the disease has long been endemic in poultry flocks there. It would bring the number of Indonesian fatalities to 82, out of 103 recorded human cases.Officials were also trying to determine if the woman's 5-year-old daughter, who was cremated after dying on Aug. 3, may also have had the virus."Results of testing by the ministry's laboratory came back positive for the 29-year-old woman," said Nyoman Kandun, a senior Health Ministry official. The infection has not yet been confirmed by a second round of testing, usually used to confirm bird flu.According to the World Health Organization, at least 192 people - the majority of them in Indonesia... 2007-08-13 14:48:00 More than 70,000 members and supporters of the hardline Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) group on Sunday held a massive gathering at a sports stadium in the Indonesian capital.Almost all but one seated area of the stadium was packed with members and supporters of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia, many of whom had come on board convoys of buses from other regions in Java and neighbouring Sumatra. The event, touted by the group's spokesman Muhammad Ismail Yusanto as an international conference entitled "It is now time for the Caliphate to reign," is hearing several speakers, including foreign invitees.Hizbut Tahrir advocate the return of a caliphate -- Islamic rule -- to govern the world. The organisation is banned in several Middle-eastern countries. But Yusanto said that two speakers -- Imran Waheed from England and Syeik Ismail Al Wahwah from Australia -- had been denied entry and deported from Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-populated country, when they arrived at Jakarta international a... China bans Indonesia seafood citing toxins and disease causing pathogens
2007-08-05 13:21:00 China has banned all Indonesia n seafood imports after checks turned up toxins, dangerous chemicals and pathogens, the government food regulator said.Shipments received before Friday would be carefully inspected, while all those shipped after that date would be returned or destroyed, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a circular posted on its Web site. The announcement comes as Chinese products from toothpaste to toys, tires and fish are under increased scrutiny and have in some cases been banned after being found tainted or otherwise unsafe.Martani Huseini, a senior official at Indonesia's Department of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, said the move appeared to be in reaction to an import ban imposed last month on Chinese food supplements, cosmetics and medicines over safety concerns.Indonesia said it found that some Chinese cosmetics contained mercury and rhodamin, that medicines contained unauthorized chemicals, and that food supple... Jakarta warned on Bali 9 executions
2007-07-29 09:03:00 PRIME Minister John Howard has warned Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono that Australians are sensitive about the proposed executions of the Bali heroin smugglers. After talks in Bali yesterday, Mr Howard said it was too early to seek clemency for the six condemned smugglers and Dr Yudhoyono said he would not commute their sentences as it was essential to crack down on drug trafficking.Mr Howard then said that he endorsed Indonesia's anti-drug crusade. The two leaders ordered a study on the feasibility of a free trade deal and supported closer economic ties. They also agreed to back measures to combat climate change during September's APEC meeting in Sydney.Dr Yudhoyono did not criticise Australia's recently reissued warning against travelling to Indonesia, which has angered Indonesian politicians. The warning stated that further terrorist attacks were imminent and Bali was a likely target.Curiously, Mr Howard welcomed a recent increase in the number of Australian visitor... Women going on sex tours look for big bamboos and Marlboro men
2007-07-12 14:57:00 Women's sex tourism is especially popular nowadays. Sources state that about 600,000 women come to the countries of the Caribbean Basin every year in search of men's attention and love.Women's and men's sex tourism are two absolutely different phenomena. Women do not go to bars and sex shows to find new partners; they do not make sex tours as such infrequent events are organized basically for men.Researchers who studied the phenomenon of sex tourism among women at Caribbean resorts say that this type of a vacation is typical of middle age women either lonely or unhappy about their family life. While men choose Asia for their sex tourism, women go to Southern Europe (Italy, Greece, Turkey, Croatia and Spain), to the Caribbean Basin (Jamaica, Barbados and the Dominican Republic), Genoa and Kenya in Africa, Bali, Indonesia and Phuket in Thailand to enjoy sex tourism. Nepal, Morocco, Fiji, Ecuador and Costa-Rica are less popular. Thailand, the Dominican Republic and Cuba ... More About: Tours , Women , Big B , Look , Going

In our Behind the Scenes series
2007-06-28 09:59:00 I thought it was a joke when I first got the e-mail? CNN's Jakarta producer contacted me to say that the recently captured Indonesian terrorist suspect, Abu Dujana, was willing to do an interview? I felt like saying "Yes, well let's see if Osama's available too, and we can see if we can get them on Larry King as a double act."CNN's Dan Rivers was taken to meet Abu Dujana in secret. 1 of 2But she insisted the police had sanctioned a face-to-face meeting with Jemaah Islamiyah's military commander, at a secret location somewhere in Java. We scrambled to the airport and less than 24 hours later I found myself nervously pacing up and down an empty, echoing corridor of a police building, waiting for a convoy carrying the most dangerous terrorist in Southeast Asia.He appeared in silhouette initially. He was dressed in white and flanked by armed plainclothes police officers. As he approached I could see a slightly built, wiry man, who looked younger than the 37 years old police said he... Bakrie Targeting Jakarta's Drinking Water Company
2007-06-26 09:09:00 PT Bakrieland Development Tbk, a company belonging to the Bakrie Group, plans to acquire the shares of a drinking water company, PT Thames PAM Jaya, this year.According to Hamid Mundzir, Bakrieland's Finance Director, Bakrieland is in fact serious about taking over this company that provides Jakarta with drinking water. So far the taking over process is still in the discussion and negotiation stage. The take over discussions which have been carried out since last year, said Hamid, will continue to be carried out intensively. However, he has not yet been able to confirm the acquisition and transaction amount because these depend on Thames as the seller. "We also still want to see all the available opportunities, so we still need to study the business and the yield," Hamid told Tempo last week. The plan for Thames PAM Jaya shares sale has actually been carried out since last year, with Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso already giving a 'green light' to the sale.So far, 100 percent of Thames ... We are good at destroying, but bad at building
2007-06-22 12:43:00 An overzealous move by members of the House of Representatives to launch a motion against the government over the Sidoarjo mudflow, the second tabled by the House after the Iran motion, only strengthens public suspicion that Indonesians are good at destroying, but bad at building. The mudflow issue, which has persisted for more than one year, is undoubtedly more important than the Iran motion. No other country is questioning their government's policy on Iran. Vice President Jusuf Kalla, for example, recently questioned why there was such a big fuss over the absence of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the House session on Iran, citing that legislators had not protested when Megawati Soekarnoputri had sent officials on her behalf when as president, she faced such motions. "The government is asking for fairness, so we can think over other issues ...," Kalla said. The writer is neither a supporter nor sympathizer of the Yudhoyono government. Muslim hardliners storm Indonesia church
2007-06-05 12:45:00 Muslim hardliners stormed a church in Indo nesia during services, smashing images of Jesus Christ and demanding that it be closed down, the pastor said on Monday.Dozens of churches have had to be closed in the Muslim-majority country in recent years, and Sunday's attack was the second on the small Protestant church in the West Java town of Soreang since 2005.Reverend Robby Elisa, who heads the church, said around 100 hardliners attacked while Sunday school was in session. He said his wife was beaten and that at least four stained glass depictions of Jesus were smashed."They came and forced their way into the church," he said. "The attackers claimed to be from the Anti-Apostate Movement Alliance. The same group had already attacked the church in 2005."The secretary of the church's headquarters in Jakarta, Reverend Budi Setiawan, said that the attack had been reported to the Indonesian Church Association (PGI).West Java, where Islam is strong, has seen a series of attacks on churches... Indonesian law to ensure investor equality
2007-04-11 03:58:00 After 10 months of deliberations and 11 years in the planning, Indonesia's Parliament passed a new investment bill that ensures equal government treatment for foreign and domestic investors and promises to cut the costly and cumbersome red tape that inhibits many local business sectors. The new law integrates previous investment-related laws and is specifically designed to revive sagging foreign investment, especially foreign direct investment (FDI) in new industrial capacity and natural-resource extraction. The move comes as Indonesia has been hit particularly hard by China receiving the lion's share of Asia-destined foreign capital in recent years.President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has pursued a business-friendly policy and stated his hope that the new investment-promotin g provisions will propel economic growth and resolve the country's pressing unemployment problem - 10.6% of the workforce is currently jobless. Bricklaying in Aceh

F07&irec= 6Bricklaying in Aceh I was looking back the other day at a letter in the British newspaper The Times as written by Professor H. H. Turner in January 1925, who was challenging the government's statement that a good British bricklayer would lay 500 bricks per day which made him the best in the world. The professor claimed to have found one bricklayer who dealt with 2000 bricks in eight hours and another one who laid 890 bricks in just one hour -- one presumes the brickie ran out of steam after a while. It made me wonder just how many bricks were being laid in Aceh province, bearing in mind the climatic differences between gloomy old England and sun-drenched Indonesia. The heat factor alone could well in fact reduce the work rate by up to fifty percent, and then of course there are the incentive factors of salary and working conditions. An English bricklayer in 1925 would have earned about one sh...
Garuda pilots 'argued' before crash
2007-04-03 03:38:00 The pilot and co-pilot of a Garuda airliner that crashed on landing in Indonesia were arguing moments before the accident about the plane's speed. A senior Indonesian investigator said on Sunday that cockpit voice recordings recovered from the passenger jet showed the co-pilot wanted the pilot to go around again instead of landing.Tatang Kurniadi of Indonesia's National Transport Safety Commission told Australian television: "Absent mindedness. I worry that this accident came from the absent-mindedness of the cockpit.Kurniadi said the captain and first officer were flying together for the first time."There was also some argumentation between the co-pilot and the pilot and captain relating with the speed and flaps," he told the Nine Network. The Garuda Airlines aircraft with 140 people on board overshot the runway in the central Java city of Yogyakarta on March 7 and burst into flames, killing 21 people including five Australians.Survivors of the crash have described how the aircraf... Corrupted pipe dreams in Indonesia
2007-03-22 05:52:00 Corrupted pipe dreams in Indo nesia By Bill Guerin JAKARTA -The opening of a new US$1.1 billion gas pipeline would appear to mark a rejuvenation of Indonesia's until now woefully inefficient natural-gas sector and boost the fortunes of publicly listed, majority state-owned gas-distribution company PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN). But enduring regulatory uncertainty and allegations of foul play among PGN's top managers threaten to scupper those prospects. After a four-month delay, PGN's 375-kilometer pipeline came on-stream on March 11. It represents the first segment of PGN's planned 1,101km South Sumatra West Java (SSWJ) gas-pipeline network. Two big take-or-pay contracts for a total of 3.3 trillion cubic feet of gas, including a 17-year deal with the United States' ConocoPhillips, as well as a 15-year arrangement with state-owned oil-and-gas company Pertamina, provide a guaranteed revenue stream. The new pipeline is scheduled to carry 30 million cubic feet of natural gas per da... More About: Dreams , Dream , Pipe

New terrorism front opens in Indonesia
2007-03-15 03:39:00 Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has won high marks from both the United States and Australia for his government's efforts to combat terrorism, including the recent capture or elimination of at least 200 terror suspects. But a new front may be opening in strife-torn Sulawesi. Security analysts have noted that since the elite counter-terrorism Detachment 88, supplied and trained by the US and Australia, ramped up its counter-terrorism operations, there have over the past 18 months conspicuously been no new major terrorist attacks against local or Western targets. Now, however, a dangerous new front is opening in the Poso area of Central Sulawesi province that threatens to spiral into a new regional security hot spot and raises new questions about the effectiveness of Indonesia's anti-terrorism operations. Fear, loathing and violence are not new to religiously divided Poso. An estimated 2,000 people were killed in communal fighting between Muslims and Christians in the ... Reversing Indonesia's anti-corruption drive
2007-03-07 04:31:00 Indonesia's already faltering war against corruption risks grinding to a total halt if a new anti-corruption draft law now circulating in Parliament and executive offices is finally passed. In its present form, the draft legislation boldly calls for the abolition of the recently established Corruption Court, which would in turn render the already understaffed and underfinanced five-member Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) a toothless tiger. The two independent institutions had been widely credited with taking the fight to Indonesia's endemic culture of official graft and corruption, which has resulted in a handful of high-profile convictions. The Corruption Court started to have impact soon after President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono rose to power in 2004 and declared a high-profile war on graft. According to Transparency International, a global corruption watchdog, Indonesia consistently ranks among the most corrupt country in the world. That has historically diverted substanti... Officials said 211 passengers and crew had so far been saved, many of them taken off the burning vessel by another ferry. Indonesia's public perils It was not clear if others were still unaccounted for, in part because there were conflicting reports about the numbers of people who had been on the ferry. Inquiry Told of Crucial Timor Letter
2007-02-21 02:43:00 AUSTRALIA was overzealous and "gung-ho" towards East Timor, former Indonesian foreign minister Ali Alatas has said at an inquiry aimed at healing the wounds left by the bloody aftermath of Timor's independence.Mr Alatas said he did not blame Prime Minister John Howard for the bloodshed around the 1999 independence vote, but claimed a letter from Mr Howard to then Indonesian president B. J. Habibie provoked Indonesia's about-face on holding the referendum. The letter, which described a change in Australia's position towards holding an independence vote, was not the "bone of contention", Mr Alatas said yesterday."It was rather the spirit of overzealousness of Australia suddenly sending troops and the largest contingent. Sometimes it's a gung-ho attitude."Mr Alatas, who is a foreign policy adviser to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, was the first witness before the Commission of Truth and Friendship, which is holding hearings in Bali. Indonesia Closer to Soeharto Millions
