2008-02-09 04:58:00 Building Relationships: 11 Rules for Self-Promotion Posted: 08 Feb 2008 07:30 AM CST It?s no secret: to get ahead, you have to promote yourself. But for most people, the thought of promoting themselves is slightly shady. Images of glad-handing insurance salesmen or arrogant know-it-alls run through our heads. The reality is that we all rely on some degree of self-promotion. Whether you want to start your own business, sell your novel to a publisher, start a group for your favorite hobby, or get a promotion at work, you need to make people aware of you and your abilities. While we?d like to think that our work speaks for itself, the fact is that usually our work needs us to put in some work to attract attention before our work can have anything to say. The good news is that self-promotion doesn?t have to be shady ? in fact, real self-promotion almost by definition can?t be shady. The reason we get a bad feeling from overt self-promoters is that, most of the time, their efforts are... More About: Life , Buzz , Coach

Presidential candidates from both parties tell us that the health of America?s children occupies a special place in their hearts. But despite the promises of better healthcare or improved education for America?s kids, not a single candidate is making a fuss about one of the most important keys to healthy children: making sure they have a relationship with their father. ?Social science data is crystal clear,? says Peter Cove in the New York Sun. ?Children raised by both a mother and a father have dramatically better prospects.? This issue doesn?t lack the potential for political traction: ?[T]here?s an epidemic of what might be called ?father absence? in the very states that are about to hold primary elections.? 2008-02-08 04:10:00 10 Steps to a More Global You Posted: 07 Feb 2008 07:00 AM CST There?s no escaping the fact that the world is getting smaller: your company?s vendors might be in India, with customers in Britain, while you are somewhere in the U.S. That?s why employers, from international non-profits to the mom-and-pop stores down the road, want employees able to think globally. Even college admissions look positively on time spent abroad these days. But picking up for a jaunt to another continent isn?t practical for most of us. We have families, jobs and commitments that mean we have to stay put, and travel isn?t often a cheap option. Despite your current location, however, you can cultivate a more global mindset, usually without spending much money. Read international literature. Reading a book written by someone with a drastically different background can be instant exposure to a new culture. You can even do it for free ? many public libraries make a point of offering books from different nat... More About: Life , Buzz , Coach

But eventually the newness wears off, and the project settles down into a daily grind. We reach a sticking point of one kind or another and get hung up.A sticking point is the point in your project where your energy and excitement level are not enough to overcome whatever resistance the project poses. There are lots of different kinds of sticking points, but for simplicity?s sake, we can categorize them into two types:External: Obstacles placed in your way by people and situations you do not control, such as your work situation, family members, illness, etc.; andInternal: Obstacles of our own making, that arise out of our own thought ... 2008-02-01 06:05:00 Dealing with Information OverloadPosted: 31 Jan 2008 07:00 AM CSTIn a world full of information we seem to be constantly toggling between managing all the new impressions we get on a daily basis and feeling totally overwhelmed by information overload. With the arrival of the Internet we were told that things would become easier - less paper clutter to worry about and more time to enjoy life. But this isn?t so, as we?ve all found out in recent years. Paper clutter en masse, email inboxes bursting with unanswered mails, tasks pending for the sheer pressure of having too much to do - you name it, it has all become part of our reality.Modern technology is the cause of all (evil)Since the invention of the Internet, we have to deal with a lot more information than ever before. One reason is the need to keep backup files of everything. After all, we think, when our hard drive crashes we have nothing left. So we create masses of duplicate copy to be sure ?just in case?. 2008-01-30 13:28:00 12 Ways to Upgrade Your Weekly Review Posted: 29 Jan 2008 08:00 AM CST Fans of GTD will already be familiar with the weekly review. Weekly reviews are designed to give you uninterrupted thinking time each week. Instead of tackling the big questions of your life between coffee breaks and morning commutes, you can set aside time to do a review. Weekly reviews are a great concept and I?ve used them faithfully for the past few years. But I?ve found just setting aside time to review isn?t enough. Without any structure for your review, these weekly sessions don?t accomplish much. Random musings of the week aren?t as useful as specific ideas for tackling the next seven days. What Are Your Mental Bottlenecks? A bottleneck is a term used to refer to the limiting step in a process. If you have enough fabric to make 200 shirts, but only enough buttons to make 20, the button sewing is your bottleneck. Mental bottlenecks occur when a lack of ideas or planning keep you from doing your best... More About: Life , Buzz , Coach

2008-01-29 04:26:00 Turkey Warns EU Against Becoming ?Club of Christians? January 28, 2008 | From theTrumpet.comThe real reason behind the European Union?s reluctance to accept Turkey surfaces in Davos. After years of jiving around the issue of Turkey?s membership in the EU, Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan got to the core of the reason why Ankara has yet to join the bloc. Speaking to reporters over the weekend at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Babacan warned the European Union not to become a ?club of Christians.? Turkey?s membership in the European Union has been a source of controversy among member states for years, and membership talks between Turkey and the EU have consistently bogged down, largely as a result of EU heavyweights France and Germany staunchly opposing full Turkish membership in the Union. French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been especially vocal, unabashedly stating that the Muslim country does not belong in Europe. ?If the EU finds itself as ... 2008-01-29 04:22:00 How to Break-Up With a Friend Posted: 28 Jan 2008 07:00 AM CST Friendships make up a huge chunk of our support system. They are the glue that holds it all together. If one friendship disappears, a gaping hole is left in the support web. But sometimes in life, it is necessary to let go of people that no longer serve as a support, but instead lead to stress and to problematic situations commonly referred to as ?drama?. It is a hard truth to accept that not all the people that come into our lives are meant to stay. Like any successful marriage or romantic relationship, effort, time and investment is needed. If you don?t grow together, you will certainly grow apart. So how do you decide when it is time to divorce a friend? Just because you have a big blow-out does not mean the friendship is over. If a situation has come about that has caused a rift, careful consideration and time spent re-evaluating your relationship should be taken. The hardest lesson to learn is when to walk away, ...
