German Military on the MarchJanuary 21, 2008 | From theTrumpet.comAs other nations refuse the U.S. further military support in Afghanistan, Germany steps up to the plate?and beyond. By Ron Fraser ?You?ve come a long way, baby? ? so goes the 1989 Virginia Slims jingle for the ?women?s own? cigarette. The advertisement contained the usual warning about the contents of the cigarette package having the potential to cause death to the consumer. The same phrase from that ditty could readily apply to the rapid rise of the military power of the nation that instigated the most recent world war, its leadership at the time intent on pursuing the goal of global tyranny. But this particular package does not carry with it an explicit warning that its contents have the potential and proven history to pose death to countless millions. In fact, the world has been sold the message that its death-dealing potential is a thing of the past. This makes its return to favor ever so much more dangerous. The Bu...

The Week in Review January 19, 2008 | From theTrumpet.comPresident Bush in the Middle East, race in Europe, chaos in Kenya, and more. Middle East U.S. President George W. Bush wrapped up his eight-day tour of the Middle East Wednesday. He has had little success in what appeared to be the main two goals of the trip: to create peace between Israelis and Palestinians, and to build an anti-Iran alliance among Gulf states. In the case of the peace process, the problem is that President Bush is using the same strategy that has been used for the past 14 years?and that has only ever made things worse. In the wake of his visit to Israel, Gaza erupted in violence and an Israeli political party resigned from the government. The nationalist Yisrael Beitenu party announced January 16 that it is pulling out of the coalition in protest of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert?s caving in to Bush?s pressure to talk to the Palestinians about land exchanges for peace. This lea...

I had a great day yesterday.Morning was spent with songs and laundry--I had no idea who rescued my laundry outta the washing machine when I went to work in the afternoon. There was simply me at the house, with music from the radio reigned over the silent spaces. And I did sing quite a lot, quite aloud. Never thought Clark was in his room, resting his not-so-well body with running nose and sweaty body.See? Sometimes I was just so damn selfish. But I bet I didn't make a chaos, awrite. What my yesterday more perfect?I was 10 minute late to work. Had a floor-meeting with the dear SPV for like, forever, demanding my team to be fully charged with creativity and productivity. Blame us for such bad early month report and wanted us to be more like crucified workaholic creatures. And I had a private talk with him--meaning he talked to me while the rest of them team members could listen even if their phones were ringing in their highest volume, mouths pretending to be busy and eyes went to my di...

Rosie on Britney : twenty six Posted by ro on January 15th, 2008 at 11:50 am in life, fame I remember the tunnel as it appeared on the news, lit by headlights, flashlights, red lights. Between the cement tall pillars was a heap of twisted metal. I saw it then, and I can see it now. Diana dead. She will be trying to get away, but they will chase her, just as they chased her into that church yesterday. There were dozens of them, jostling their way into sanctuary, elbowing past each other, just to creep closer to her. Even her last-minute, folded-hand prayers can?t be kept sacred. There can be no silent moments in a crowd; no silence, and no secrets. All this fresh, painful frailty costs her so much, but it lines their pockets very well. A kings ransom was paid for those tabloid-ready cheap shots of her with messy hair, tear-soaked eyes, and the half-smile of a desperate baby girl. ?I?m scared,? she told them yesterday, when they later mobbed her at co...

We're a tempeh nation By Editorial Desk The Jakarta Post Publication Date: 17-01-2008What would Indonesia's first president Sukarno say if he were alive today about the strike by tempeh producers in Jakarta over the soaring price of imported soybeans, the main ingredient in the fermented soya cake that is a major item in the nation's diet? Sukarno, in some of his speeches to arouse national pride and dignity, coined the phrase "we are not a tempeh nation". In those days, tempeh was considered...

Oprah Winfrey, Discovery to launch cable network From http://www.reuters.comNEW YORK, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications said on Tuesday they will build a new cable television network, describing the venture as dedicated to inspiring viewers to "live their best lives." "OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network" will be owned jointly by Winfrey's Harpo Productions and Discovery. The network will debut in 2009 in more than 70 million U.S. homes, appearing on what is now the Discovery Health Channel. Winfrey will serve as chairwoman of OWN and have full editorial control over its programming and branding, in a major expansion of her media reach, which already includes a top-rated daytime show on broadcast television, feature films, "O, The Oprah Magazine," a satellite radio program and a Web site. Robert MorleyColumnist Selling America for Designer Boots, Top Hats and Thimbles January 15, 2008 | From theTrumpet.comLike a near-concluded game of Monopoly, America is selling off its last properties to maintain its lavish lifestyle. Robert Morley We are living through one of the greatest transfers of wealth ever experienced. As Americans continue to live high on the hog, maintaining unsustainable lifestyles, billions of dollars each day flow out from the United States to the Middle East and countries like China and India to enable us to import foreign goods and foreign oil. Each day, more of our collective wealth, and that of our children, is transferring to the coffers of foreign governments. If this were a Monopoly game, we would have sold Baltic and Mediterranean Avenue long ago. Now we are even looking for buyers for our Park Places and Boardwalks?our most prestigious financial gems. What will we d...

Readers Respond: Your Stumbling Blocks Posted: 14 Jan 2008 07:30 AM CST About 10 days ago, I accidentally posted a question I had meant to schedule for later this month, and as I?m coming to expect, your responses really got me thinking. The question was simple: What one big productivity block do you most struggle to overcome? But the issue it raises ? how can we keep ourselves on track? ? is really complex, and speaks directly to why a site like lifehack.org exists and continues to attract a daily readership in the six figures. We talk a lot about goals, motivation, and self-development. All of these things share a common root: desire. The desire to fulfill our destinies, maybe, or to attain for ourselves something that?s missing, whether that?s security, luxury, meaning, or even just a sense of completion and closure. Planning our own absence But things get in the way of us attaining the things we desire. Sometimes those things are external factors ? a harsh government, a po...

Al asked me when I was about to leave the house to pay the bills this afternoon. He forgot that I'm not working for these two days."I'm leaving for Bali, you guys!" I lied to my team at the office yesterday. At first, they didn't buy it but when we were taking our separate ways home, all of them asked me to buy them anything from Bali. America?s Greatest Foreign-Policy Blunder? January 14, 2008 | From theTrumpet.comWas America?s decision to invade Iraq that nation?s worst-ever foreign-policy blunder, or was it just the consequence of a far greater error of judgment? By Ron Fraser ??Iraq,? swears Al Gore, ?was the single worst strategic mistake in American history.? Senate majority leader Harry Reid agrees that the war he voted to authorize is ?the worst foreign-policy mistake in U.S. history,? and indeed is already ?lost.? Many of our historically minded politicians and commanders have weighed in with similar superlatives. Retired General William Odom calls Iraq ?the greatest strategic disaster in United States history.? Senator Chuck Hagel (who voted for the war) is somewhat more cautious; he terms Iraq ?the most dangerous foreign-policy blunder in this country since Vietnam ??? (Victor David Hansen, Claremont Review, Winter 2007/8). Well?is Iraq the single worst mistake in American h...

The Week in Review January 12, 2008 | From theTrumpet.comBush visits Israel, Europe hurts for energy, Islamists fill the Philippines, a Big Man gets tried, and much more. Middle East U.S. President George W. Bush is currently on an eight-day tour of the Middle East, visiting Israel, the West Bank, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, according to his official itinerary. Stratfor reports, ?Given the length of time and the scope of his travels, the trip will have to involve the three issues of the region: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the future of Iraq and U.S. relations with Iran. What is not clear is precisely what Bush is trying to achieve with this trip? (January 9). Certainly, if his aim is to build his legacy by making decisive headway in the peace process?as his predecessor Bill Clinton tried to do before him?his efforts will be futile. On Wednesday, even as President Bush was in Israel, the south of the cou...

I had an argument with SM today. He's such a pain-in-the-ass creature and I simply hate almost every single thing about him--not even when he acts nice and cool, which always fail to impress me. Then I was gonna leave the office at two pm when the meeting with the Mr. D. I could put up sitting there on a small chair shared with P for a couple of minutes, but Jesus, Mr.D set a new record in my history, ever. He finished talking after 5 pm!! He always uses up much more time than he can save up. Saying, "Please be focus on your work!" can be wonderfully extended to thousands of minutes and three sunrises. And I have to work tomorrow as well as this damn Sunday. Meaning I'm awarded a 7-days-a-week working hour and a hell. Talking about productivity!! This week's been full of wrath and woes. Shame on me. But I don't make any enemy, just try to keep it on myself and let the hatred burned on papers full of scratches and lines. Anyway, Sw goes to Malaysia (for a trip), Hotman to Nias (f...

Kremlin Creates Another Nationalistic LawJanuary 11, 2008 From theTrumpet.comA new Russian law says only state-owned firms can use the term ?Russia? in their name.Thousands of Russian and foreign companies could be forced to change their name under a new law in Russia. According to a Russian newspaper, ?[C]ompanies are forbidden to use the official names of countries?both Russian and foreign?as well as their derivatives.?This law could cause trouble for foreign firms like Deutsche Bank, Nestle?s ?Nestle-Russia? and British American Tobacco. Domestic companies will only be able to use ?Russia? and ?Russian Federation? in their name if the government owns over 75 percent of the shares. This new law will do a number of things for Russia. The government could receive a huge amount of cash as companies that don?t change their name are landed with heavy fines. It will also give the government the opportunity to try and grab a larger stake in firms that don?t wish to change their name.Stra...

EU Ready to Enter Peace Process January 9, 2008 | From theTrumpet.comIf U.S. efforts to aid the Middle East peace process fail, the EU stands ready to get more involved. The EU needs to take a more active role in the Middle East said Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki this week. ?We want the EU to be active in actions taken in creating an independent Palestinian state,? he said, speaking with Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel a few days after Slovenia took over the EU?s rotating presidency. According to Associated Press, Malki ?said the 27-nation bloc should become a player, and not just a helper, in the recently revived peace process.? Rupel responded by promising that, should the talks begun at Annapolis fail, the EU would resume a key role in the negotiations. ?[I]f there is no progress, the EU will involve itself in the process again, as far as it can,? said Rupel. Rupel added that the EU is ?already quite a player in the region....

Do You Want 2008 to Be Your Best Year Ever? Let Go. Posted: 09 Jan 2008 07:00 AM CST Try making a single change in your outlook Regular readers will know that I am not much attracted to the type of article that can be summarized as ?x simple ways to do y.? I distrust overly simple responses to life?s endless complexity, just as I distrust simplistic ways of thinking. However, I can think of one ? just one ? simple action that will make 2008 perhaps one of your best years ever. This one action is so far-reaching in terms of creating well-being that I felt I had to overcome my distaste for the format and share it with you. It can be summed up in two words: ?let go.? Let go of the past It?s over and done. Whether you relish or hate what you did back then, nothing can change it. Worrying about it is useless; replaying it over and over in your mind merely prolongs the emotions to no purpose. All that will happen is that those feelings will reach forward and poison the present and the...

EU law concerning unencrypted transmission via satellite? According to French media reports, the European Parliament is said to pass a new law in a few weeks, which considerably will dampen the toll plans of the satellite provider SES Astra. National and public TV broadcasters within the European Union are to be forced by means of this law to transmit at least own productions unencryptedly, the news service Satelli-Line reports. As a reason for the new law, the fact that more and more EU citizens change their residence is indicated. Abroad they often do no longer have the possibility to receive TV channels from their home, because these are encrypted, the service states. SES Astra and the big German private broadcasters had planned under the project name Dolphin the encryption of their free-to-air offer; due to investigations of the Federal Cartel Office, these plans were stopped (DM reported). This toll platform has started under ...
